Book Description
"The argument is important and very well buttressed by statistical analysis. The sociologists who have worked on Asian and minority entrepreneurship will certainly respond, and the debate will be lively." -- Nathan Glazer, Professor of Education and Social Structure, Harvard University
Race, Self-Employment, and Upward Mobility refutes conventional notions about entrepreneurship with a wealth of unimpeachable data. Timothy Bates finds that self-employment and upward mobility are open to those who are highly educated and skilled, often possessing significant personal financial resources. This is true among Asian Americans, African Americans, and everybody else, too. Asian immigrants are prominent in low-profit, high-risk small-scale inner-city retailing, Bates explains, because they are often pushed into it by poor English language skills and problems of credentialing -- when they can secure other employment, they do so. African Americans, in contrast, who have the education, capital, and inclination to become entrepreneurs find better-paying opportunities and avoid ghetto shopkeeping.
Bates compares black and Asian self-employment. He reviews who becomes self-employed, what factors encourage continuing self-employment, and how people escape unsuccessful self-employment. He addresses the place of entrepreneurship in upward mobility among disadvantaged persons and the role of government in assisting them. Bates's analysis is based largely on the massive Characteristics of Business Owners survey compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau, which provides nationwide information on small business success and survival patterns.
This book is an important contribution to the economic and sociological literature on ethnic groups and labor. It belongs in all libraries with extensive holdings in economics and sociology. In paperback, it can be used in upper division and graduate level courses.

Book Description
The common sense view of "money" as a natural and unchanging economic fact is, in reality, a product of contemporary society. Indeed, ever since money was invented there has been fierce debate about its political, economic and ethical character, and a continued discourse, involving academics, political theorists and social reformers, on the best ways to create money, the most effective rules for governing its use, and even the potential benefits of its abolition.
Recent years have seen an increasingly powerful resurgence of interest in fundamentally changing national and global systems of currency and in controlling the monetary trends -- the booms and busts of the globalized economy -- that affect all aspects of our lives. Yet few realize that these objections have deep roots and a rich tradition.
"The Money Changers" is a unique collection of historical and contemporary thought on the nature of money, combining the political and polemical, the analytical and the visionary. It draws on a wealth of expertise and experience, from the impassioned treatises of reformers such as William Morris, via the mainstream economics of John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich Hayek, to the entrepreneurial insight of social activists such as Edgar Cahn and George Soros.
This book is a timely guide to the key ideas and ideologues in a fast-moving debate on our economic and social future and will prove informative, enlightening and entertaining for academics and general readers alike.

Customer Reviews:
what is this book really about??????.......2007-05-13
This book harps on a persons' upbringing and if there was enough encouragement, enthusiam and confidence given as a child... The author feels based on the manner in which the person was raised is relevant to their success...I kept reading ( painfully ) because I was sure somewhere there would be something relevant to the title. Reading this book was like a therapy session , that I did not request..
Misleading title.......2007-04-16
I gave this book two stars not because of the writing, but because the title is misleading. If you're looking for courage to quit your high-paying but soulless job for more soulful work--and maintain your standard of living--this book won't deliver.
Perhaps a better title would be DO WHAT YOU LOVE, THE MONEY WON'T MATTER. That would set a reader's expectations more in line with the book's message. The cases in the book were not monetarily successful. However, they show that if you follow your heart, the money won't matter. The things that money can buy when working a soulless career, such as vacations, clothes, cars, and so on lose their appeal as a reward, because what you DO is the reward. You no longer need what money can buy because you have what money can't buy: love.
More than just a Career book!.......2007-02-20
I simply loved this book! It motivated me greatly on a daily basis and I couldn't wait to continue reading it. I felt so positive and good about my quest.
Even though it was written a while ago, it still has much relevance today. If you think this is just another career book, you are severely mistaken.
There is so much psychology packed into it, in an accessable language. It truly is "food for thought" and makes you think about what your priorities in life are.
Highly recommended. Feel good factor!
Great Book.......2007-01-09
This is an inspirational and motivating book. Highly recommended for anyone considering a career change or to revitalize your career goals.
Essential book to have.......2006-08-27
This book WILL absolutely help any person find their way. It gives career advice and great life advice. It is a wonderful gift for anyone who feels stuck in their current job and anyone who is ready to branch out. EXCELLENT BOOK! EXCELLENT AUTHOR!

Customer Reviews:
Mixed bag.......2004-09-04
I listened to the 2003 recording from Recorded books of the 2001 book by Silver Lining (the same people that published this for "Barnes and Noble Basics."
Unless newer versions have changed substantially I would have to say watch out. The Solid information is solid for the time such as dollar figures, phone numbers, and webs site addresses. You will recoup your investment in these alone.
The advice however on saving, taxes, stocks, and rules, is of an old era. It is sort of like reading a medical book that tells you to put butter on a burn instead of ice.
One assumption that may bit you is saving in a 401K. She makes the assumption that you can keep your money in until you are in a lower tax bracket. She does not take into consideration that at the time of this review we are being taxes at a much lowered percentage in general then we will be in the future. She acts like placing your money in stock will make money in the long run with out taking in the fact that the percentage it earns nowadays is a fraction of what it used to and if you lose 50% value that you have to make 100% on your money just to break even.
I have to give her credit for giving out more useful advice that some of the misleading item like suggesting looking into "whole life insurance" She even points out that they will make a bundle off you. On 401K she keeps saying you have to wait to 59.5 years to take it out. Then all of a sudden says 55 and separated from service. So the information goes back and forth.
Final analysis the book gives you a place to start and food for thought. Just do not believe any of the details.
