Money in an Unequal World is a distinctly individualized exploration of the way currency has become a universal source of "social memory," and what this means in a global society now riding the latest wave of its transformation from "metallic objects to paper notes to electronic digits." Keith Hart, a teacher and social anthropologist, offers draws on a background that combines such eclectic pursuits as academics, entrepreneurship, and gambling. Also drawing upon philosophers of the "democratic revolution" like Locke, Kant, Marx, and Gandhi, he tackles this abstract tale by examining "the conjuncture of money and machines that makes our phase of economic history capitalist" and investigating "money and markets from a humanistic point of view." Inviting readers to discover the story in their own way--even recommending that one "dip into the argument at random, allowing your eye to rest where it finds fertile ground (and move on if it does not)"--Hart meanders in a basically linear and highly entertaining fashion from the struggle against the agrarian hierarchy to the collapse of Stalinism and the rise of the Web. Ultimately, he concludes that changes apparent today actually provide an unprecedented opportunity to improve the world using money and markets as instruments of "economic democracy." His argument is provocative and illuminating. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Hart believes that humanity stands on the threshold of a new era in which there will be a pressing need to develop, conceptually and in practice, an awareness of the common problems facing world society as a whole. We have scarcely begun to contemplate how to establish and maintain the social, technological and cultural infrastructures we will need to survive in the 21st century. In a polarized world characterized by staggering economic inequalities, recent advances in technology offer radical possibilities for the development of human freedom and equality. Hart?s particular focus in this book is the Internet, which he argues holds the potential for a re-personalization of economic relations. In this world, new means of exchange could be harnessed to the ends of a truer economic democracy. Money is the problem, but it is also the solution. Hart, an anthropologist by training, offers a new view on the interaction between money, capitalism, and culture ? now, in the future, and throughout history. The many important strands of thought and experience in this book will challenge established views from all quarters of economic, political, and social thought.

history of money.......2004-11-23
A rare book in that it provides cross disciplinary thought about the history of economic transactions, with more. The book is full of information and wit; it is easily readable to anyone that is used to reading academic material and offers unique thought fodder for those that are seriously interested in the world and its condition. The book is informative and aims not at advocating ideology. While this is strength the book may leave the reader a little disappointed, due to the fact that Hart offers brilliant analysis but offers no real solutions. Still, if he did that would be something on the scale of an economic enlightenment. Seemingly Hart hopes that a reader may take the matter into consideration and hopefully come up with something very interesting.
I recommend this book.
What is money? Do *you* know?.......2002-08-20
Money In An Unequal World is one of those key-stone books that should (must) be read by those who think they know about economy, and by those who believe that knowing about economy's single most important tool -money- is unnecessary. Keith Hart goes beyond a simple analysis of what money is. He places money in a context, in the past and the present, as well as in the future. If we are puzzled by what's happening with the stock market, or with the `unprecedented' economic collapse of countries such as Argentina, wondering how it is possible that within a week three million middle-class citizens suddenly became the New Poor of our era (with no fault of their own ... except perhaps trust in a system -the banking system- that makes us believe `our' money is in good hands), we'll gain some insight from reading Hart's book and perhaps make some urgent decisions of our own. We'll find out that `our' money isn't ours, that our choice to work isn't really a choice, because we're pressured to earn `their' money for it's the only money available and it has very definite rules ... which most of us happen to ignore, and side-effects ... which most of us prefer not to admit are there.
Money In An Unequal World will pull the veil off of money. Are we depressed because we lack enough to fulfill our dreams ... or even our most basic survival needs? Well, one of the characteristics of `their' money is that it's scarce. If it's scarce, there won't be enough, and if there isn't enough and the value can be made to drop or rise without our consent or even understanding of why this happens, then of course we'll see that suddenly, no matter how much we work, a decision made by `them' will make it possible for our savings to drop in value by fifty percent, a hundred percent, or three hundred percent, as in Argentina, or five-hundred percent, as it occurred in Ecuador during 1999. Is it fair? Who makes the rules? Why aren't we asked if this is right? The answer is simple: because we are, among 99 percent of the world's population (including most economists), unaware that money is one of the prime reasons why we live in an unequal world. As Keith Hart himself writes: "For all the rhetoric of freedom that abounds in our societies, state capitalism is based on legal and economic coercion, on the ancient principle of territorial monopoly and on the newer one of having to sell oneself in order to live. State power looks as if it is on the wane; and, while the world's money system totters from one crisis to the next, the concentration of economic power in the hands of a few large corporations seems inexorable. This is our chance to find new forms of political association, more appropriate to popular needs, and perhaps even to subvert the dominance of a capitalism enjoying the fruits of globalization."
Not that Hart is against capitalism as such, but since certain expression end up meaning something much different than at first, he would prefer that we enter an era of "economic democracy" in which we also have a vote as to the kind of money we are "allowed" to use. But before we can vote, it might be a good idea to read his Money... in order to understand what choices we have. Hart writes: "The immediate and long-run causes of economic inequality, therefore, are an unfair and unstable system of money-making (...)" among others, and "Virtual capitalism has exacerbated this by marginalizing whole sectors of the world economy where agriculture and mining are predominant, as well as by unleashing savage swings in the money system that can impoverish national economies at a single blow." As in Argentina?
As it's happening or could happen in most of the world ... ?
Brilliant.......2001-12-05
Marx and Engels figured out capitalism. This guy has figured out money.
Academic treatise that covers the topic.......2001-11-23
Dr. Keith Hart is a distinguished social anthropologist, widely published author, and scholar who has taught on both sides of the Atlantic. He is currently a professor and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. He has served on the faculties of Cambridge, Yale, University of Manchester, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, and McGill University.
This background should tell you something already about the author's perspective and what this book will be like. "Money in an Unequal World" is a deep academic treatment of the role of money in society. For those engaged in the study of this topic, this book offers a revolutionary way of rethinking money and society. Hart addresses how internet access separates societies by controlling their access to money and commerce. He shows how money that transfers outside national controls-and taxes-gives some the distinct advantage of being able to use "wild money." Virtual capitalism will change the money balance in the world.
You will find a tremendous amount of information and commentary packed into this book. Expect to encounter page after page of small print text without illustrations. There are nine tables and figures in the entire book. For the serious reader on this topic, this is a page-turner. For the occasional reader in this field, this will feel like a highly focused textbook. In the introduction, Hart describes the book as being written from memory, but each chapter is backed-up by an abundance of footnotes. Fortunately, the book is indexed to help readers find particular areas of interest.
While we can certainly appreciate Dr. Hart writing such a book from his ivory-tower perspective and manner, there are some really interesting aspects of this topic of value to the lay reader. Unfortunately, the design and languaging of the book does not appeal to that market.
If this topic interests you, I recommend this book. If it does not hold high academic interest, move on to another book on the topic. You'll get bogged down in this one.

Product Description
The ultimate handbook for those who are thinking about working or volunteering as they travel in their RV. Second edition is completely revised and updated and includes more than 350 jobs and moneymaking opportunities and 72 pages of resources.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for the planning phase.......2007-10-04
We found this book a very valuable resource for planning on our eventual fulltiming phase of life. It is a very easy read, but it also has the information you need. It's very well laid out! Thanks for a great book!
Wonderful Resource for RVers.......2007-04-03
Support Your RV Lifestyle: An Insider's Guide to Working on the Road (Second Edition)
is a wonderful resource -- it's well-written, filled with great information, and is inspirational and encouraging, as well. Jaimie Hall is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her topic. It's obvious that she's a seasoned traveler -- and has been both working on the road and talking to many other RVers who have worked while enjoying their travels.
The book summarizes over 350 jobs (in categories like work at rv parks and resorts, christmas tree farms, state parks and national forest areas, concessions, seasonal jobs, sales of rv related products, crafts, writing and consulting). Details like how to handle resumes, long-distance job interviews, contact information and communication while traveling, and the right questions to ask about jobs are also covered. In addition to the many options it lists, it points out possible problems and challenges one may encounter on the road while trying to find a job or while working.
If you (like us) are thinking about traveling in an RV, this is the book to have in the planning stage -- and I assume it will also be helpful when on the road.
Also check out the author's website and enewsletter.
Planning for the best of both worlds.......2007-03-15
Many people who contemplate living the RV lifestyle probably equate it with a leisurely retirement. But what if you combine RVing with a lucrative work life? You may discover that you can hit the road at a younger age and reap more rewards.
Support Your RV Lifestyle spells out in great detail exactly how to live this dream life. Jaimie Hall speaks from her own experience and culls information from a wealth of other sources to create a comprehensive tool for planning to live and work on the road.
Just as you wouldn't set out on a trip without a road map, you would be miles ahead by consulting this guide before embarking on this life journey. There's a lot more to consider than where to park your vehicle each night. Don't assume you'll just "find a job" when you reach your destination. There are many considerations, from tying your marketable skills to a job on the road, to balancing work and fun, to tax implications. Because Ms. Hall is so thorough with her guidance, you will be well-equipped to make decisions about how to combine work with pleasure.
It is likely that some of her 100-plus pages of worksheets and resource lists would assist travelers in general, not only those traveling and working out of an RV. You'll recoup the price of this travel guide many times if you choose to follow its course for living and working on the road
Working While RVing.......2007-02-27
My husband was intrigued by the idea of full-timing in an RV. This book gives you ideas of working while moving around in your RV. Maybe working a seasonal job in a theme park or with a tour group, on a guest ranch or in a national park appeals to you. Some jobs offer free campsites.
Ultimately I chickened out on the idea, but if you think the open road is for you and want to make some money along the way, be sure to read this book.
It includes a ton of info in the appendix: including contact information for state tourist bureaus, state parks, state revenue offices and state motor vehicle and licensing bureaus and more, plus an additional 32 pages of resources.
An essential for working RVers!.......2007-02-23
Wow! This book was so much more than I expected. As an RV owner, author and speaker, I frequently use our RV for business travel. Even for part-timers, this book contains a wealth of information on managing RV expenses, grocery shopping and operating your own business on the road. With Jaimie Hall's book, even rookies like me can travel with the wisdom and efficiency of someone who's lived this lifestyle for more than 15 years.
If you've ever wondered what it would be like to be a full-timer, buy this essential book and read every word. It will help you realize your dream.
Customer Reviews:
THIS BOOK ROCKS!.......2007-07-27
Nothing will stop corporate America to raising credit card interest rates to 100% if they can get away from it. Sure you can sue the them, but did you know you can sue the company that issued that debt? Like the ENTIRE Board of Directors too? NOTHING will stop companies from REAPING off consumers faster then this book. I could not even read the fine print on my CC bill. This allows you to FIGHT back. Don't believe the reviews, this is a Harvard Lawyer, he's knows EXACTLY what he is talking about. Go Stanley, Go! :-)
Horrible Book.......2006-05-26
This book is one-sided and a total waste of time and money. The "solutions" he offers are not detailed and many are very unrealistic.
I am a 3L law student that knows a little regarding collections and this book is a horrible book for the average person to use. He recommends filing a malpractice suit to fight against medical collections - this is total BS and will get any attorney in hot water. Additionally, the average person that cannot afford a $500 medical bill will definitely not be able to pay the retainer on a med-mal suit that is groundless (let alone no attorney in their right mond would file such a suit).
He outlook on the judiciary system and juries is also distorted and very disturbing. Lawyers like Hilton should be disbarred.
Where's the Beef?.......2006-03-28
I read this book and the author is very vague about how you can go about doing some of the things he brings up in the book.
At least he could have suggested some lawyers that are versed on
how to proceed with some of this debt elimination tactics that he describes. After reading the book one is left to fend for oneself without much in the way of help or useful information just vague ideas.
Do NOT buy this book! It is full of lies and outdated information!.......2006-03-15
I have over 5 years of professional credit repair experience and I know just about everything there is to know about credit repair. I have read many books on the subject, but this is the worst one I have ever come across! The author states that FICO scores are issued by TRW, yet TRW has not existed for over 10 years! He further states that the credit bureaus have 60 days to complete an investigation request by any consumer, yet the Fair Credit Reporting Act, cleary states that they have 30 days to conclude any investigation! The author goes on to say that writing letters will not work, which is precisely the way that I have helped hundreds of people, including myself. The author states that the only way to remove negative or inaccurate items is to sue the credit bureaus! Well, this is easily said than done and he knows it! This is yet another lie! For all I know, the author probably works for the credit bureaus and banks by feeding the reader false, inaccurate, outdated information and drilling to sue the bureaus and creditors, because he knows it is easier said than done! I do not like this book, I do not recommend at all and the writing style is just plain dumb as it has absolutely no logic and too much beating around the bush for nothing in order to make the book thicker. I can't understand how it got published!
Unique and liberating perspective!.......2006-02-13
I love this book - if only for the way that it challenges the idea that creditors are right and debtors should feel guilty for existing. Credit card companies are feeding off the consumer by luring them in with promises, and then suddenly imposing impossible fees and interest rates.
Debtors don't fight back - and they should!! This book shows one way how to do that - and I am very appreciative. And I imagine it's a pretty scary idea to credit card companies - that we can turn around and sue them for harrassment, for usuary, for bait and switch.
I'm postive that some of the bad reviews here are from credit card companies - particularily the laughable one which says that sueing companies is illegal and will get you in trouble. Even that review tries to make you feel guilty - "you borrowed the money, so suck it up." Well, I borrowed the money at 4% interest, not 30%, which I got after one late payment. There's a word for that - it's called loan shark.
Thank you to Mr. Hilton for a book of empowerment! Whether or not I decide to follow his advice (which I probably will,) it was liberating to even think about it!
Book Description
They sent chills down your spine with Dracula; made you laugh with Abbot & Costello and cry with ET; and nearly scared you to death with The Birds, Jaws, and Jurassic Park. Universal Studios' phenomenal success didn't come easily, and theirs is a tale worthy of a movie itself. Founded in 1912 by the legendary Carl Laemmle, Universal struggled hard in the early days to compete with its rivals, finally succeeded in the 1920s, and then began a roller coaster of ups and downs that climaxed in the new millennium with its status as a true industry leader. The major players included directors Hitchcock, Ford, Scorsese, Stone, and Lee and actors De Niro, Pacino, Streep, and Sarandon. Through an analysis of each movie, from the golden silents to Schindler's List, the exciting history of one of the world's greatest studios comes alive.

Great book!.......2007-09-21
Great book, lot of good advice. I totally believe in the network marketing business the problem I encountered was I rarely found anyone else who felt the same way. Good luck!!
Great book for everyone!.......2001-01-25
When I first entered this industry I was lost. It was very clear to me that I knew very little about the MLM industry and that the people above me knew very little as well. Like so many beginners, I was forced to find the information on my own. But where to turn?. The first book I turned to was " Your First Year in Network Marketing", it helped me immensly in pointing me to towards the path of success. But when it came down to the actual "how-to" of the business, this book helped me enormously!. It's so easy to duplicate and understand!.It's not boring nor filled with pointless paragraphs. This book is crammed down to the point of an actual instruction manual ( at least in my version), with good solid information. So simple!. So easy to use. I can't understand why'd you want to use something else!. When combined with the tapes and "Your First Year in Network Marketing", the combination of information is unbeatable!.
This book gives you a thorough basic understanding in MLM.......2000-04-14
If you are new to MLM this book will give you a clever insightful and factual view of network marketing pitched at the new initiate. I really liked it!
