4 out of 5 stars A good starting point for business and finance students.......2001-03-28

This book is updated to the latest development in financial market, institutions and structure.

It concisely presented the money and capital markets with a touch of history and functionality.

I particularly like the balanced view of the authors in their presentations. It successfully illustrates the functional as well as risk consideration of the markets and institutions.

This book should serve well for student studying in domestic financial market and also as a bridging link to international financial system.

After completing a series of interviews where I'm pretty sure I crashed and burned, I decided I needed some professional help. The overview drew me in immediately by describing a typical nerve-wracked interview candidate anticipating an interview "train wreck." That's me! I thought. This guide provided a thorough description of the case interview, from beginning to end, with a lot of examples. I feel much more prepared for my next round of interviews, now that I understand the process. Now I can go into my interviews as a raging bull, instead of a scared rabbit. I STRONGLY recommend this guide to everyone facing the dreaded case interview. Good luck!

2 out of 5 stars OK book, but does not worth buying.......2005-10-24

I bought this book to try and improve my personal statement for residency application. This book is straightforward, but it is too simple. You will not find any majic formulas or great examples. The examples that are there - are VERY VERY classic and long unappreciated by the RD's.

I am sorry to tell this to the author but the usual "I saw a physician saving little boy's life" or "I delivered clafs when I was 5 and that is why i want to become a OB/GYN" are no longer working succesfully to get interview. If you need examples - surf the web and then WRITE YOUR OWN PS.

ON a separate note: I thing I did agree with the author is that the use of the online automated services is probable not the best option to go thru, so the answer is (I think) better write your ow - even if it is not perfect - you can FEEL that the person wrote it, that it is not unpersonal" statement.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book !.......2005-08-15

I loved it because of its comprehensive topics, helful tips and practical approach. I wishh all the best for dear Dr. Tysinger, the editor of this state of art !

5 out of 5 stars The Best Resource I've Encountered.......2004-09-18

I am a prospective med-school student in the application process. I have been to several bookstores, online sites, and my own college's health professions office. No guide, book, or handout has even a fraction of the depth and clarity in this book. This book guides the reader step by step towards a great resume and personal statement in a structured, workbook-like format. This strategy was particularly helpful when I wrote my personal statement. The author's years of experience shine through in the motivational and preperatory statements designed to ease the student through the stressful process. Dr. Tysinger's methods are unique and thorough, and more than just a compilation of pre-fabricated examples. I am confident my personal statement addresses issues and qualities med schools are concerned with in a fluid and easily understandable manner. This guide is one of a kind for healthcare applicants.

5 out of 5 stars An extremely valuable resource for medical students........1999-02-22

Dr. Tysinger draws on his extensive experience advising medical students to share useful strategies for the match process. He offers practical tips for preparing personal statements and CVs, and gives particular attention to the process of identifying personal experiences and strengths and developing "marketing strategies" for residency interviews. Lots of examples are provided to help illustrate the variety of experiences that can be discussed in a personal statement. Dr. Tysinger also provides worksheets for the applicant to complete to aid in the writing process. Much of the advice provided will be of great help to physicians further along in their careers, as well as other health professionals. This book will be particularly helpful to the medical student who is having difficulty with his/her personal statement because "I haven't done anything except go to medical school for the last four years!" This book can help you identify your strengths and unique abilities, no matter what you've done (or haven't done) and no matter what your specialty choice is. I highly recommend it.

....if you know little or nothing about the subject it is a great "30,000 foot overview" introduction to the concepts. Use it as a general guide for delving into the deeper (and more expensive) treatments on the subject.

                1 out of 5 stars Basically a Sales Pitch.......2004-05-20

This book is simply a sales pitch for this author to sell his law services. It doesn't contain anything of substance and often engages in hyped images of sipping champaign on the beach where your offshore account is contained. Additionally, there is not ample consideration given to the downsides of engaging in the "touched upon" strategies. This is a waste of money and may even lead you in the wrong direction.

2 out of 5 stars How To Hide Your Money 101.......2003-07-05

If you have done any serious reading about asset protection strategies, you will not likely find this book of much use. It is an o.k. primer for those who know absolutely nothing about the subject, but that's about it.

The book's small size unfortunately limits it to barely touching upon the many complex, individual topics it addresses. Topics like international trusts, Nevada corporations, LLC's, are all covered, though not in any real depth. It's enough to whet your appetite for more information though, which is probably the main intent of the book, as the author frequently mentions throughout that he provides such services through his own law practice.

While I couldn't expect a book this short to provide an in-depth analysis of each topic, what probably bothers me the most about Sears' writing is the fact that he seems to completely ignore the downsides of using these strategies. In fact, reading this book leaves one with the impression that asset protection strategies are a 100% foolproof strategy for safeguarding your money. They aren't.

While the author touches upon many excellent ideas for protecting your money in general, you are never given enough information to actually implement any of these strategies, nor given a real understanding of their limitations and dangers. Like they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

While I have no doubt that Mr. Sears is excellent at what he does, I definitely would not recommend making any financial decisions based upon information contained within this book.

Lastly, Wealth & Asset Protection Strategies is in desperate need of a proofreader. Since I can't find any information at all on the publisher, I am going to assume that this is some sort of self-published work, anyway.

Recess is long over, and it's back to school for failed entrepreneurs. The Dot.Bomb Survival Guide: Surviving (And Thriving) in the Dot.Com Implosion, by branding genius Sean Carton, dissects the '90s to show what worked--and what didn't.

Poring ruthlessly over the remains of AllAdvantage, BigWords, and other dot-comedies of errors, he shines light on the mistaken assumptions and dodgy strategies that dragged them down to the landfill of history. But knowing what not to do can't guarantee success, so Carton also examines plenty of healthy companies, including several he was involved with professionally.

What do investors want to see? When is new tech good tech? Has the Internet really changed anything, and how? These questions should be on the minds of every serious start-up developer, and The Dot.Bomb Survival Guide lays out the answers for all those ready to learn from the past. --Rob Lightner

                Book Description

Dot-Winners vs. Dot-Loserswhat works, what doesn't, and why

With more dot-coms going bust every day, new-economy entrepreneurs and managers are scrambling for detailed information on what went wrong with the losers and how they can emulate the winners. DotBomb gives them the answers with a close look at a number of notable dot-com failures, comparing their experiences with those of several prominent dot-com successes.

With the help of candid commentaries by staff members, venture capitalists, industry analysts, and market research, Sean Carton performs postmortems on Priceline, Living.com, PlanetRX, ValueAmerica, and other recent dot-com debacles and identifies the dot-pathologies that led to their demise. He also provides contrasting examples of successful companies that excel in that area, and he extracts powerful lessons on what managers can do to follow their examples.

First of all, the title of this book is grossly misleading. Rather than a how-to handbook for business success in the post-dotcom era, "Dot.bomb" analyzes the fall of the most notorious dotcoms, and postulates how they might have succeeded. As the book illustrates, there's no single reason why the dotcom market imploded in early 2000; the market was born out of a flukish combination of events (affordable Internet access, the arrival of Windows 95, an exuberant stock market, etc.) and likewise crumbled through a similar combination of circumstances. Bad business models, bad management, untested technology and a lack of investor confidence all played roles in the failure of one dotcom after another.

"Dot.bomb," however, also examines the dotcom enterprises that succeeded, such as eBay, Priceline and our dear old Amazon. What made these ventures an exception is a major thrust of the book -- and perhaps the most informative. It also provides a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel for the reader weary of failure stories.

Since the latest examples in the edition I read were from early 2001, one hopes that a newer edition would bring the dotcom story up to date. How the Internet industry has responded to the recession, corporate scandals and 9/11 are tales that an updated version of "Dot.bomb" ought to cover.

4 out of 5 stars Good, critical look at the big implosion.......2002-02-09

Sean Carton does a thorough job of exploring and exploding the myths that brought down the dot.com boom. As a front-line, engaged player, Carton not only had a good view, he has a good mind for knowing and seeing what went wrong. He's working on his doctorate and he should be a great professor of this genre.

This is an interesting companion to David Kuo's book. With a very similar title, Kuo is funnier and more dramatic, primarily because valueamerica.com was such a huge, single implosion and Kuo, by training, is a writer and, to some degree, a spin doctor. More serious and critical, Carton pulls no punches, examines a lot more companies, and has a more technical, well-grounded understanding the business models (or lack thereof) that created and destroyed the late 1990's version of the new economy. Start with "the greater fool" theory. Carton's book is better for the serious student wanting to see the big business picture.

Carton is methodical and crisp, even dry at times. The graphics of the book, including the font and page layout, could also have been more appealing or reader-friendly. If you're teaching an e-commerce course, as I have, you want to consider Dot.Bomb.

5 out of 5 stars Now is the time to learn from our "new-economy" mistakes.......2002-02-06

If you ever wondered what went wrong, how and why the "dot.com" sector self-destructed so fast, this is manadatory reading. Sean, in his methodical manner, tempered with wit and humor, describes the details of the "unthinkable" of a few years back... the collaspe of the tech "fad"... and the survival of the tech revolution. He makes these distinctions as well as offers a blueprint for the continuing evolution of the revolution. A fast compelling read, recommended for anyone interested in technology's future.

I will admit to being prejudiced. I've known Del Coates for about four years now through Western Automotive Journalists.
He is a true gentleman who has always been willing to chat with me and help me to understand why I really liked a cetain car I was reviewing.

Del's book not only provides brief and clear analysis of why objects around us are made the way they are, but gave me a far more complete tool set with which to judge. What I learned will allow me to be a better writer who can now "make sense" out of what I am feeling.

I have not only told my friends about the book, I went out and purchased about a dozen and sent them to fellow writers and editors. And being the cheapskate that I am, this even surprised me.

This is simply a superb book and will be cherished by anyone who really wants to understand how Industrial Design developed
and grew into something that touches us every second of every day
whether we recognize it or not.

                5 out of 5 stars one of a kind.......2003-02-18

A book that addresses what many know but fail to acknowledge. This book brings the importance of design, which is a result of the power of the human senses, to the mainstream without dumbing down the material. The decisions people make in regards to buying products are largely based on unarticulated(Subconscious) reasons. Studies report that 80% of human communication is non-verbal and that visual communication is one of the oldest and most important forms of communication. In todays marketplace where most products are commodities, possesing similar features and functions, design is one of the most powerful forms of differentiation. This book details the importance of design and the key attributes that make one design stand out from another. Take notice of the "irregular" or different size of this books binding. Do you think some thought went into that?

5 out of 5 stars What it takes to have a Wow product!.......2003-01-02

You will learn how humans react to a product - particularly great ones. I appreciate that the author has given me a new way to look at products and the effect of their designs.

The author describes from a neurological and pyschological point of view how you react to a new product the instant you see it. I am talking micro-seconds here. Then, he discusses how you come to like it or reject it (a few microseconds later). This was truly interesting. He relates it back to Information Theory -- yet the book was not about bits and bytes. He describes how various shapes communicate differing amounts of information. Too much results in an over load.

The author presents a simple model to analyze products. To help with this he discusses how he uses semantic difference surveys. I found this material very interesting although I wish that he had included samples of the survey documents. I didn't understand how the prospects visualized and then specified the ideal product to compare your product to.

This is truly a great book but it does requires you to slow down when you read. The author carefully defines his terms - which unfortunately have to deal with cultural abstractions (like 'zeitgeists', 'daimons'). To keep up with the author, you need to understand these terms, as the author defines them.

I will now go back a second time and try to make his framework more permanent in my brain.

The author sleeps and dreams about great design. He has been a great designer (cars) for some time and now teaches out in San Jose.

If you develop new products, or are a CEO of a company, or if you just like design... this is a required book.

I looked at the book at the book store several times and put it back because the abstract terminology turned me off. Later I went and sat down in the book store and read it more slowly. It was then that I realized what a jewell this book is. I'd love to sit in on one of his classes.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent content that needs some condensing.......2002-12-10

"Watches Tell More than Time" is about how industrial designers influence the emotional responses that their products create. (Note: it's primarily concerned with physical objects, as opposed to computer software, which gets a lot of design press these days).

It explains these responses in terms of evolutionary psychology. And, in what I consider to be the reason to read the book, it tells you how to measure and optimize them. That is, it lays out the theoretical underpinnings for a small set of attributes (contrast, novelty, objective concinnity, and subjective concinnity) that are fundamentally responsible for our emotional responses to objects, then describes a systematic process by which you can strengthen the responses that you consider important for a given product, and then measure your success (using a semantic differential scale) and find out you whether you have simultaneously weakened other desirable responses.

There is some jargon, but it's well defined and to the point, and anyone interested in design should have no problem understanding it.

It's at its best when the author delves into specific examples. Many are from his experience in the car design field; others are everyday items that everyone can relate to. The detailed deconstruction of a "simple" Corelle cup is outstanding -- I wish the book had a dozen more like it.

The book's major weakness is the amount of time devoted to relatively elementary concepts, such as contrast and novelty. (How many times and in how many ways do we need to be told, for example, that new things command more of our attention than familiar ones?) I finished several chapters in a row thinking "OK, now that's he's got that out of his system, he's about to get to the good stuff." Eventually he does, but the repetition beforehand is why my rating is four stars, not five.

Note: The book is _not_ about what I might call the "mechanics of aesthetics". How is it that Curve A feels dull while Curve B -- a subtle, almost unnoticeable variation -- seems taut and alive? Why does this union of materials and forms seem exactly right, even inspiring, but that one fails to catch the eye?

For example, the author calls SUVs outwardly "robust", "rugged", and "militaristic". That feels right, but what makes it so? What is it, exactly, about the shapes and lines of an SUV that evoke such a different reaction than is typical for a minivan ("bland", "boring", "utilitarian")? Each is, after all, more like the other than like a sedan. Yet no one would have trouble identifying the type from a picture -- even without telltale backgrounds of the Rockies vs a youth soccer field. Each time I think I've got it nailed down, I see a counter-example on the road. I think it's mostly a matter of the angle between the hood and windshield, and the height of the grille. But that just begs the question: why are the more acute angle and higher grille more aggressive in the first place? A lower grille and gentler angle are considered more aggressive in a sports car.

"Watches Tell More than Time" tantalizingly dances around such questions, but fundamentally doesn't attempt to answer them. But it leaves you better equipped to wrestle with the answers yourself. (A sports car has different emotional goals than an SUV.)

So the book won't make you an industrial designer any more than a trip to the art supply store will make you an artist. Instead, it introduces you to a fundamental chunk of an industrial designer's toolkit. If you've already internalized "talk to your users" and "keep it simple", and you want a deeper understanding of how some products are able to become beloved icons, you'll probably find very interesting material here.

                    Book Description

As a Western economist studying and working abroad, Peter M. Lichtenstein witnessed first-hand China's tumultuous cycle of reform and retrenchment in the 1980s. From the early euphoric stage to the last and most brutal episode, Lichtenstein's book describes and explains the economics behind this cycle and ties together the economic, political, and cultural aspects of the reform era. The book also chronicles the achievements, problems, events and political controversies that led up to the Tiananmen Square debacle and the subsequent retrenchment away from the broad goals of reform. Organized chronologically, this work begins by detailing the reasons for the economic reform movement upon the death of Mao in 1976. In the mid-1980s those reforms began to encounter serious difficulties--Lichtenstein explains what these difficulties were and why they arose. He also describes how, in the summer of 1988, the conservative hardliners were able to regain political power from the reformers, setting the stage for what would happen eight months later in Tiananmen Square. Following this is an analysis of the development of the basic positions of the Chinese left and right, and Lichtenstein's first-hand observations of the retrenchment following Tiananmen. Concluding with a retrospective look at the reforms and retrenchment, this work will be of interest to professors and students of political science, international relations, economics, contemporary Asian history, and China in particular. It will also appeal to the intelligent layperson with an interest in current affairs.
