Okay-maybe I only just dream about a job in Washington-maybe I really want to work in Hollywood on "West Wing." But Christopher Porter's book makes me think that working on the hill is an actual possibility -even without the black beret. there's a lot of good practical info and he's pretty funny,too.Worth the money for sure.

Though my previous job as a policy analyst for a national homeless organization brought me into regular contact with Congressional Hill Staffers, I still found the book very insightful. I think an important aspect of this book is that it pointed out the things I was doing correctly in pursuing a legislative position on the Hill. Admittedly, I was a bit hesitant to even purchase the book because: (1) I already had knowledge of how things worked on the Hill; and (2) I had been looking for a job on the Hill for several months, and I didn't want to find out that I was doing everything wrong. Overall, I was pleased that I made the decision to buy it.

`How to Get a Job in Congress (Without Winning an Election)' is by far one of the most useful books I have ever come across. As a person who recently returned to the DC area, I have to admit that this book helped me secure my current job. The author, Chris Porter, leaves nothing out. From his step by step employment guide, to the little things (such as the tricks to finding the right apartment) the book contains information only available to those who have gone through it all. The book is well written, lucid, and funny. I suggest this book to anyone thinking of working on Capitol Hill or knows of someone who is.

This book has a lot of good information in it, from summaries of the different positions on Capitol Hill to who to talk to when pursuing your job. However, if you already have a decent knowledge of Congress functions, not a lot of it will be new to you. There are a few choice nuggets of insight that I wouldn't have thought of on my own, however, and for that reason the book was worth it.

Although he eventually gets to financial planning he spends a LOT of time working on God's design for MARRIAGE and the pain of divorce. I feel that most people who buy this book are already aware of these things and are perhaps struggling and need help with the tight financial planning. I like Larry Burkett and recommend most of his books, but not this one.

My dad was a Studebaker dealer and I grew up reading everything I could about the company. Following them through the early to mid fifties was agony. This is a very detailed description of their rise, near demise, and eventual failure. Excellent history and nostalgia. Actually a bit sad but I could not put it down.

Although there have been major globalisation episodes prior to the current one, previous globalisation experiences did not seem as pervasive as the episode which began in the last quarter of the twentieth century. It is claimed that the current globalisation wave is causing social disruption: redistributing income from poor to rich, and displacing vulnerable workers. This book provides a careful investigation into the impacts of globalisation on the labour market.
Globalization and the labour market examines the relative decline in the economic fortunes of unskilled workers in the major industrialised countries over the last thirty years. In the United States and United Kingdom this has resulted in a relative decline in the wages of unskilled workers. In the 'continental' European economies it has tended to manifest itself in the least skilled facing a higher probability of being unemployed or of being unemployed for longer. Many make the case that globalisation was responsible for this. But globalisation is not the only possible explanation. The last 30 years have also been a period of significant technological change - impressive both in its scale and speed. This has increased the demand for skilled workers and made them better off in economic terms.
The contributions contained in this volume provide a detailed insight into how the labour market impacts of globalisation differ across different firms, industries and countries and how the impacts of technology and trade are intertwined. The analysis contained within this book will make it invaluable to academic researchers and policy makers.
