    Book Description

The Diversity, Complexity, and Evolution of High Tech Capitalism re- examines some of the main portions of the discipline of economics from the point of view of economic change and creativity. There are two aspects to this perspective. First, diversity and complexity: the range of different kinds of high technology products available to consumers and producers increases rapidly. As these hierarchies grow, they deliver ever more diversified and complex high tech goods. Powerful new corporations will emerge.
Second, self-organization and evolution: living organisms spontaneously establish patterns and order. So does the economy. Some of the patterns of the economic world used to be large, vertically integrated corporations and multinational corporations. This structure is now falling apart and new industrial patterns are emerging: small, narrowly specialized corporations.
The author argues that the US economy is currently experiencing a turbulent `phase transition', moving from one phase of capitalism to the next. New species of corporations, markets, and economic institutions are emerging. A new and higher order of capitalism is crystallizing out of the present chaos.

          Description:
Industrial ecology and the industrial ecosystem approach (IE) are emerging concepts in ecological economics, environmental policy and corporate environmental management. The natural ecosystem model of diverse recycling and cascading material and energy flow systems has been used in industrial systems that are contrasting to this, operating with linear flows and unsustainable. Understanding the evolution of industrial systems over time toward sustainable or unsustainable ways of operating is important for learning about environmental performance analyses as well as for future planning of policy and management. The evolution over time of the Uimaharju forest industry park in Eastern Finland is studied. First, the system development is described by identifying the number of IE-type 'roundput' material and energy flows denoting waste utilisation and sustainable use of renewables. Second, development of the system over time is shown in terms of the number of the actors involved. This structural characteristic is termed system 'diversity'. Third, the relation of the two is considered. Fourth, the drivers of the case system development are discussed. Fifth, an initial effort is made to calculate some of the environmental effects of the system during its development. An increase in roundput and diversity over time is observed. Diversity is affecting roundput. The park tends to enlarge its activities outside the industrial park boundary over time. While the system illustrates high roundput and high diversity, we can only speculate if these characteristics contribute to sustainability, because of difficulties in system boundary definition.

                Book Description

In 1913 and 1914, A. Mitchell Innes published a pair of articles that stand as two of the best pieces written in the twentieth century on the nature of money. Only recently rediscovered, these articles are reprinted here for the first time. In addition, five new contributions analyze and extend the approach of Innes in a number of directions by including historical, anthropological, sociological, archeological, and economic analyses of the nature of money.

The original articles by Innes contained two quite different approaches to money - what might be called the credit approach (later developed in a much less satisfactory manner by J.A. Schumpeter) and the state money approach (also called Chartalist and adopted by J.M. Keynes and by G.F. Knapp). This volume shows how the credit and state money approaches can be integrated to shed light on the origins of money, but more importantly, how they can be used to understand the way the modern money system operates. In addition to the articles by Innes, the volume contains chapters by John Henry, Geoffrey Ingham, Michael Hudson, Geoffrey Gardiner, and L. Randall Wray. An introduction by L. Randall Wray and Stephanie Bell provides an overview and a short biography of Innes.

2 out of 5 stars Extremely Disappointing. Save Your Money..........2003-05-16

After having read two of Holz' other books, I was really looking forward to receiving the "...Brochure and Letter Handbook" -- particularly since our firm is currently revising its brochure. Unfortunately, the book spends most of its time describing the various types of brochures and their uses instead of how to actually write one. Important questions such as what sections should be included in the brochure? and what words and graphics are most powerful? have been glossed over. Instead, Holtz spends too much time describing the brochures he has included as examples. Whats wrong with this? Well, the examples are circa 1980s and even then they would have been considered relatively low quality. Suggestions to print or photocopy your narrative on blank pre-printed brochures is a sure way to announce to potential clients that "I am a low-quality, work-from-my-kitchen consultant." What about other components of your marketing kit? I haven't found any mention of such valuable additions. Consider Holtz's recommendation that, if you have a number of specialties, you should have several different brochures. Really? Maybe he should explain this to the world's largest consultancies. Instead, they typically use general brochures featuring folder pockets die-cut on the inner front and rear covers. This way they can continue to use their general brochure and then include a cover letter, additional material describing their specialities, articles their firms have written, a copy of their newsletter(s), press releases, client testimonials, and/or a host of other information. Holtz's examples of model letters are also horrible. The language, in particular, is noteable for its use of 1950s and 1960s style formality. Consulting is a business based upon relationships. Your letters, therefore, should be reflective of the relationships you've established (or wish to establish) with your clients. They should be warm, personable, and sincere. I'm so disappointed in this book that I'm thinking of reviewing my other Holz books with a more critical eye. If they don't measure up to my original evaluation, I'll discard them to make room for more valuable resources. Overall grade: D+/C-

'Prank' Cover Letters Really Sent from a Real Unemployed American. Joe Mozian, a laid-off marketing pro, tried endlessly to land the perfect job, but with corporate downsizing on the rise, his 'serious inquiries' received no replies. Joe's sense of humor prevailed, turning his job-hunting frustrations into a tongue-in-cheek poke at the whole job-hunting process. He began writing and actually mailing these ridiculous cover letters to accompany his professional resume: Dear Pepsi Human Resource Department, I love Coke... Dear Playboy Human Resource Department, Why do I want to work at Playboy? Two words: naked women... Dear Solomon Smith Barney's Human Resources Department, You are no doubt looking for candidates with intelligence, dedication, ambition and drive. That's great, but what about the rest of us... Dear UPS Human Resources Manager, You are probably wondering why this letter was sent via Federal Express... Dear Fruit of the Loom Human Resources Manager, I go through underwear like crazy. It's gotten so bad I just throw them away after each use. That stated, I would like to be considered for a key marketing position within your organization... Filled with off-the-wall marketing ideas and intimate autobiographical events, Joe's letters are fun-spirited, sometimes shocking, and intent on leaving their recipients wondering, "Is this guy serious?"

This guy does something about it in a funny, unthreatening way. It appears he even self publishes these letters, as if to give one more little jab to the 'man'. His letter to his very own father is priceless.

This book really set me off laughing. A great example of making lemonaide from lemons. My favorite letters are the ones where he ads his personal stories. I especially loved the letter to MTV. Can't wait to read the follow up to this this book.

5 out of 5 stars Blew me away!.......2003-12-22

I have never been more skeptical over the hype of a book more than this one. Well for once the hype lived up to my expectations. I loved this book, not just for its humor and originality, but for it's hidden social commentary. The author is smart enough to realize the serious statement that this book makes, though he cleverly disguises it all with humor. Crazy or genius, he puts it all out on a limb and walks away. Hiring practices get a kick in the rear and they don't even know it. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and Funny!.......2003-12-22

From the title to the last letter this book was a fun and fast read. A real original humor book that gets funnier every time you read it. The fact that this was never meant to be a book in the first place makes the whole concept more hillarious. Great job to the author for its brilliant execution.

"Inventors, use this book to: ? verify the patent status of an idea ? search Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries ? use online patent search services In the past, if you wanted to assess the novelty of an idea, you had to wade through the patent database at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) in Virginia--or hire a lawyer to do a patent search for $500 and up. The cost and inconvenience of these searches often meant that good ideas were left to rot on the vine. With David Hitchcock's book, Patent Searching Made Easy, you can learn to do patent searches yourself, on the Internet, at little or no cost. A physicist, engineer, and patent searching expert, Hitchcock gives you the vocabulary, instructions and strategies you need to search for a patent quickly and easily. He explains how the PTO classifies different types of inventions, so that you can assign your idea to the right class, compare it to related ideas and then determine if it's novel enough to qualify for a patent. Patent Searching Made Easy also shows you how to: ? prepare for online searches with the right hardware, software and computer skills ? access online patent searching resources ? narrow online searches with key words and Boolean logic ? perform database searches at Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries (PTDLs) ? do microfiche searches at PTDLs ? search fee-based patent databases on the Internet ? search international patent offices ? do advanced searches at the PTO and PTDL Written for both inventors and business owners interested in expanding their product line through the license, distribution or manufacture of other people's ideas, Patent Searching Made Easy is the easiest way for you to determine Am I the First? Mr. Hitchcock's book has made my life a lot easier. All the info you need is right there. I'm sure you could take the time to look some of it up, but there are a lot of techniques and tricks that I never would have thought of. I especially like the Searcher's Secrets that are highlighted throughout the book.

Then there is the discussion of Usenet as a resource. Most people think that the World Wide Web (WWW) and the Internet are the same things, but that's only because browser programs make it easy to surf the Web. Hitchcock explains how to use the thousands of discussion groups on Usenet to answer specific questions.

The thing I really like the most is the chapter on the European Patent Office (EPO). If my patent search at the US Patent Office turns up some foreign patents, I can check them out online. There is even a way to translate the text of foreign patents into English for FREE! That little trick has already saved me about 10 times the cost of the book in translation fees.

                    Great job!

5 out of 5 stars New, updated version of an excellent resource.......2006-01-23

With the constant improvement in computer resources available to the inventor who wants to do his own patent searching, an updated version of this fine book is a welcome sight. Observe the dates on reviews of this book to see that those citing a need for an update are old and should be dismissed.
The patent literature is an excellent resource for researchers or inventors to learn what has been done in their field of endeavor. Professional inventors use the patent literature to spark their own ideas. Surprise! -- That is the intended purpose of our patent system -- "To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts...." Learning how to access this resource is useful to all involved in improving our technology.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Patent Search Reference.......2006-01-14

Too often, inventors and business owners plunge ahead with an exciting new idea. They invest large sums of money in research and tooling only to find the idea is already patented or that it cannot be patented because it is actually not a new idea. The solution for avoiding this waste of time and money is a preliminary patent search. By using this book, you can rapidly learn how to tap into the remarkable facilities that are available today and find a quick and low cost answer to the question of whether to go ahead or abandon an idea.

The amazing beauty of some of these information sources is that you can reach them from your home, your desk at work, or at a nearby library. Even if you feel you are computer illiterate, "a dinosaur", you'll find the author's step by step instructions will enable you to find a gold mine of information pertaining to your invention.

The author starts out with an overview that clarifies the differences between various intellectual properties such as patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. He notes it is important to overcome the common misconception that patent owners can count on law enforcement agencies to defend their patents. The government will not. A patent is not a defensive legal right, but rather an offensive legal right. It is you that must sue infringers.

He then discusses some of the patent searching basic principles and tools. He simply and clearly presents how electronic databases now allow you to extract and examine patent data. He covers the basics, such as keywords, wildcards, and Boolean logic in an easy to understand steps accompanied by pictures that show you exactly how the information will appear on your computer screen.

After you become at home with the fundamental methods, you are introduced to advanced methods that you can use on the PTO and EPO (European Patent Office) Websites. He explains, in plain English, how to use the XOR Boolean operator, proximity operators and how to use wildcards. The author even shows you how to translate sections of foreign patents online, at no cost. You will be pleasantly surprised as to how soon these arcane sounding terms and methods become old friends. Again, in each case, examples and their screen images will aid you to grasp what is going on.

While computer searching on the Internet has become a terrific starting point, the author stresses the continuing importance of using the facilities of the Patent and Trademark Depository Libraries (PTDL) that are available throughout the nation (addresses and phone numbers are given in the appendix).

The writer details how using and understanding the patent office patent classification system will greatly aid your search efforts. This involves using the Index to the U.S. Patent Classification System, the Manual of Classification, and the Classification Definitions. He gives examples and reproductions taken directly from these books.

Some inventors make the mistake of failing to check non-patent office sources for prior art. The use of the Google Internet search engine is described and the addresses for several other search engines are given. Another basic source for information is the Thomas Register which is now also on the WWW. The use of government agencies is also covered. Yet another tool covered, are the many discussion group Websites.

At the conclusion, the author gives suggestions for analyzing your search results. He notes it is common to come up with a half a dozen prior art patents and cites the four Patent Office criteria regarding Statutory Class, Utility, Novelty, and Unobvious. He notes the mental trap inventors often fall into by thinking "that if an aspect of your invention hasn't been "claimed" in a prior patent, you can claim it."

This is a terrific, up-to-date, book for learning how to do a preliminary patent search at a very low cost.

                      Book Description

Like the knives it produces, Spyderco is an unusual company. A relative newcomer to the world of knifemaking, the small, Golden, Colorado-based business launched in 1976 did things differently from the start - and managed to take the knife world by storm in just a few decades. In this book, discover the history and inner workings of the company whose design innovations have redefined the shape of the modern folding knife and taken high-performance cutting to a new level. Find out how these odd-shaped knives with the hole and the hump in the blade have made opening and carry more efficient, as well as how individual models have met the specialized needs of EMTs, police officers, hunters, soldiers, survivalists and more. Spyderco aficionado Ken Delavigne covers each product in detail - from Clipit folders and fixed-blade knives to custom collaborations to sharpeners - describing how it was developed and why, what real-life problem it solved and the design elements that make it unique. In addition, he explores the technical frontiers where Spyderco has made so many inroads and previews what's on the drawing board for the new millennium. Finally, he offers insight into the uncommon business philosophy and management style that have allowed Spyderco to achieve such legendary success.

I bought this book for my knife collecting husband who not only loves Spyderco, but is an avid reader. He immediately read the book from cover to cover and refers to it on what seems to be a daily basis. He routinely reads passages to me when we're discussing his knives and why he prefers Spyderco over all others. If you know someone who likes folding knives at all, BUY THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GIFT book for dads, brothers, uncles etc........2000-04-03

If you are looking for the perfect gift for a knife collector/user or anyone interested in knives, THIS IS THE PERFECT GIFT.

As one who has none of these characteristics, I found the book fascinating- an intriguing look at a world I knew nothing about. The final chapter is an unexpected gold mine of ideas and insights into a company, Spyderco, whose philosophy is guided by integrity ... "being good even if no one is watching".

You'll buy this book because it's the definitive book about a great knife company and its products. When you read it, you will get a lot more...you will learn about the company they call "the mouse with a megaphone" and it's no Mickey Mouse either!

I am fascinated by the book's descriptions of the design-rationale behind each of Spyderco's many knives.

Also, the book describes the management philosophy and practice at the Spyderco company. Fascinating insight into what makes Spyderco knives so good!

A nice feature of the book is that it can be read in bits and pieces. It has lots of glossy photos. It reminds me of reading National Geographic magazine. Parts are nice for casual browsing, other parts have in-depth description.

If I have my pants on, I'm carrying a Spyderco knife! If your Spyderco knife is indispensible, I'm confident you'll like this book!
