Europe, East Asia and APEC: A Shared Global Agenda (Global Economic Institutions)
Peter Drysdale , and David Vines Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 052163315X |
Book Description
This book contrasts regional economic integration in the Asia Pacific Region and in Europe. In the Asia Pacific Region, regionalism is developing by means of "open regionalism," constructed through the APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Process). This is different from the regionalism that has developed in Europe through the construction of a single European Market and Monetary Union within the European Union. In the light of this contrast, a number of important contemporary policy questions are considered by an international team of contributors. How should Europe and other parts of the world respond to the development of open regionalism in the Asia Pacific Region? Can these regions develop a shared global agenda directed toward sustaining genuinely multilateral solutions to international trade policy problems over the coming years?

Discussing core European issues in depth, the book highlights the influence of other countries on the Europe, and vice-versa. Paul and Sarah Edwards have kept abreast of changing directions in small business through a series of eight bestselling books that began with their pioneering Working from Home, first published in 1985. Now, teaming up with computer industry journalist Linda Rohrbough, they've set their sights on the Internet and how to profitably incorporate it into an entrepreneurial operation. The book delivers on exactly what the title offers, Making Money in Cyberspace: The Inside Information You Need to Start or Take Your Own Business On-Line, and aims to flatten the learning curve for novice but interested small businesses. The nuts and bolts of working both within the medium (designing Web sites and providing associated services to others, for instance) and with it (selling various unrelated goods and services online) are thoroughly discussed from the small-business perspective, as are technical matters (such as choosing an entrepreneur-friendly ISP and setting up a credit-card account). Periodic profiles of those who successfully use cyberspace in their business--complete with relevant URLs--are also interesting and instructive. --Howard RothmanBook Description

Stands the test of (Internet) time.......2001-08-11
Paul and Sarah Edwards seem to have a keyboard that turns whatever is typed into gold. The duo are noted for creating inspiring, hands-on, how-to books for the small time operator with big dreams, and this one is no different. In cyberspace, where one offline line year is the equivalent of ten online years, it is very difficult to write a book about the Internet that is not completely out of date by 3 p.m. the next day. This book though is one the few that can stand the test of time (or at least still be relevant next week).
The Edwards do the usual explaining, defining and exampling, but we were most impressed with their profiles. We visited several websites that were mentioned in the book and found all of them to still be in business! In the lightning fast "up and at `em" today "down and out" tomorrow atmosphere of the Internet this was truly a surprise. It just goes to show-if those entrepreneurs read this book and are still profiting, than maybe you will too.
Chock full of inspiring real life success stories, you'd do well to give this read your full attention.

Promoting Yourself: 52 Lessons for Getting to the Top . . . and Staying There
Hal Lancaster Manufacturer: Free Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0743213645 |
Amazon.com
Whether you're looking for a new job or seeking to advance in the one you already have, an ever-tightening market and the ever-toughening competition will not be giving you any slack. Promoting Yourself, by veteran Wall Street Journal careers columnist Hal Lancaster, offers 52 ways to even up the score--and then some. Writing from a tradition-based yet thoroughly modern point of view "for people who question the quick-fix psychobabble served up by the empowered, self-actualized, spirituality-seeking nexus that now dominates the overstuffed career advice field," Lancaster refreshingly addresses real-world situations with real-world suggestions. When writing a résumé, for example, he advocates replacing "vagaries with specifics" by substituting solid accomplishments for empty adjectives. Consequently, he urges learning all you can about a prospective employer before an interview and then anticipating everything they will want to know about you. Other issues Lancaster tackles include leadership, promotion, advanced education, management (for first-timers as well as the more experienced), job-hopping, time off, buy-outs, mergers, start-ups, office politics, and a few "alternative paths to glory" such as turning a hobby into a career and becoming a free agent. There's plenty of solid advice here that anyone can use to better their working lot in life. --Howard RothmanBook Description
Longtime Wall Street Journal columnist Hal Lancaster is tired of feel-good career guides written by football coaches and soap opera actors who boil the complex workplace down to buzzwords and platitudes. Refreshing and controversial, Promoting Yourself asserts that readers can best build their careers not by listening to so-called gurus, but by studying others like them who have flourished.
Through stories of real-life professionals, Promoting Yourself reveals a workplace that requires you to pit your competitive fire against a horde of ambitious bosses, peers, and subordinates, all seeking the brass ring of success. Lancaster shows you how with tough, savvy answers to the fundamental questions: How can you find the right job? How can you improve your job? When should you leave? How do you survive your boss's foibles? How do you make sense of all the mergers, technological advances, and cultural changes that have muddied the career waters? When is it necessary to ignore the incessant calls of "family first"?
Promoting Yourselfgives readers the street smarts and insight needed to tackle the highly political and often unjust reality of corporate life.

Profiles Winners, and tries to create rules from them........2003-04-28
The auther also frames issues too narrowly, and leaves out important aspects of peoples lives. As a father, i'm not so willing to move from state to state as a rising executive. That's my choice. However, his 52 ways assume you'll do ANYTHING to get ahead, that your whole life is centered around business success. That's too narrow of a definition for me.
The book assumes you'll pay any price to get ahead.
Yet it doesn't state that directly, which is a very key point.
He also left out some key psychological traits that business leaders possess: ruthlessness and an ability to feel comfortable winning at any cost, as long as the authority figure in your institution accepts it.
This book is a quick read, because it's pretty superficial.
If you've been in the business world for 10+ years, and you don't know a lot of these things by now, well, um, you need to pay attention more.
If you're 100% committed to your business life, and you will do anything at anytime for anyone to get ahead, then you can learn some fine points of behaivor from this book.
Otherwise, this is like saying you'll be Bill Gates if you
do what Bill Gates did.

Safe Money: Building Effective Credit Unions in Latin America (Inter-American Development Bank)
Manufacturer: Inter-American Development Bank ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1886938695 |
Book Description
Credit unions, the most important source of credit for microenterprises in Latin America, reach the poor in large numbers and have great potential for expansion and growth. When donor funding and subsidies began to dry up in the mid-1980s, and competition from commercial banks intensified in the 1990s, many credit unions throughout the region found themselves facing a profound crisis. The more progressive credit unions responded to these competitive forces by developing greater financial discipline and service innovation.
In facing up to this new environment, Latin American credit union movements will have to grapple with four key issues: rehabilitation, regulation and supervision, governance, and consolidation. Safe Money explores these issues and presents the new thinking on how credit unions can compete effectively in modern financial markets while still retaining their social mission.

Dotcom Divas: E-Business Insights from the Visionary Women Founders of 20 Net Ventures

More and more women are striking out on their own in cyberspace. DotCom Divas, by Internet strategist Elizabeth Carlassare, profiles 20 of the best and brightest of these founding females, distilling key e-business insights and strategies. Moving beyond the model of two guys working in a garage, the author describes "successful women who are creating real, thriving Web companies from visions that were initially just twinkles in their eyes."Her choices of women Web entrepreneurs are intriguing and eclectic: Nancy Evans and Candice Carpenter at iVillage, Janina Pawlowski of E-Loan, Eugenie Diserio of the astrology site Astronet, and oneNest founder Durreen Shahnaz, who links disadvantaged artisans with global markets.
Carlassare's readable profiles are not puff pieces. She organizes her visionary leaders into four areas of the Internet economy: Web portal, Web-based services, e-commerce, and e-business applications. Each chapter explores one company and founder in terms of the source of their winning business idea, the business plan, fundraising, team building, and meeting the challenges of growing and marketing their business. Chapter summaries capture the essence of each woman's strategies for success.
Carlassare offers many engaging excerpts from a day in the life of her divas. For example, oneNest CEO Durreen Shahnaz trekking in Bangladesh; Nancy Evans and Candice Carpenter raiding their personal bank accounts to meet the iVillage payroll; and Janina Pawlowski, standing on the floor of Goldman Sachs, sweating out E-Loan's public offering.
The book could have been strengthened by a concluding chapter to underline key success patterns. Still, each chapter offers specific insights and inspiration for both experienced and aspiring Web entrepreneurs. And these powerful perspectives are not for women only. --Barbara Mackoff

Even though the dot com explosion has affected two of the companies in the book, I think the rest of the women's ability to withstand the market shakeup is a testament to how women tend to start more conservative and more sound businesses. Although the market is still in flux, "Dotcom Divas" offers clear portraits of diverse businesswomen with varying styles and motivations that will undoubtedly lead them to continued success.
Any aspiring businessperson - not just women - will glean some essential tips and ideas from reading this book.
On The Fence.......2001-03-22
As an e-entrepeneur of a growing business, I found the book a bit biased with little substance.
No doubt, the fact that so many women achieved such great success is inspiring and that they were profiled is fabulous. But, the seriousness of the pitfalls weren't accurately described. A great example of this is the fact that a few of these dot coms no longer exist, and reading their business plans in the book, seemed like they had no worries in the world...a bit misleading.
All in all, I recommend you buy the book, just don't take it too seriously and most importantly, don't let it intimidate you!
