    Book Description

This book challenges the widely accepted notion that globalization encourages economic convergence--and, by extension, cultural homogenization--across national borders. A systematic comparison of organizational change in Argentina, South Korea, and Spain since 1950 finds that global competition forces countries to exploit their distinctive strengths, resulting in unique development trajectories.

Analyzing the social, political, and economic conditions underpinning the rise of various organizational forms, Guillén shows that business groups, small enterprises, and foreign multinationals play different economic roles depending on a country's path to development. Business groups thrive when there is foreign-trade and investment protectionism and are best suited to undertake large-scale, capital-intensive activities such as automobile assembly and construction. Their growth and diversification come at the expense of smaller firms and foreign multinationals. In contrast, small and medium enterprises are best fitted to compete in knowledge-intensive activities such as component manufacturing and branded consumer goods. They prosper in the absence of restrictions on export-oriented multinationals.

The book ends on an optimistic note by presenting evidence that it is possible--though not easy--for countries to break through the glass ceiling separating poor from rich. It concludes that globalization encourages economic diversity and that democracy is the form of government best suited to deal with globalization's contingencies. Against those who contend that the transition to markets must come before the transition to ballots, Guillén argues that democratization can and should precede economic modernization. This is applied economic sociology at its best--broad, topical, full of interesting political implications, and critical of the conventional wisdom.

      Book Description

Wherever there is money, there is money politics-a subject demanding ever greater attention at a time when monetary policies lead and the real economy follows. A principal defining characteristic of the contemporary global economy, Jonathan Kirshner contends, is the rise and preeminence of monetary phenomena—international financial crises, Central Bank Independence and inflation fighting, the creation of the euro, and monetary reform in emerging economies, to name only a few. Moreover, unlike most debates in political economy (such as those regarding trade policy), which are generally recognized as political, monetary phenomena and macroeconomic policies are typically represented as expressly apolitical. In Monetary Orders, a distinguished group of scholars explores the inescapable political origins of choices about money. The essays in Monetary Orders each address a specific issue or puzzle relating to money and its management. Their authors focus on markedly disparate cases but share a common observation: for most policy choices about money, market forces and economic logic can rule out certain options, but are indeterminate in explaining why one policy rather than another will be chosen. Ultimately, political factors are essential to explain fundamental and consequential choices about money.

like fiona czerniawska's other excellent books this is easy to read and packed full of interesting ideas. in fact the main strength of the book lies in its ideas rather than it's analysis. I particularly like the second part of the book which is a brainstorm of the future of consulting...one point that seems to be missing is the effect of the internet on this area of business. even though it was published last year it already seems a little out of date - what with consultants taking equity in docoms and starting incubators to retain staff...the world is changing very fast. maybe too fast for a book liket his to be tatically useful...the ideas though are very useful.

          Book Description

In the authors' random poll of 1,000 working people, 80 percent said that a single coworker contributed significant stress to their workday. Everyone has worked with someone "difficult" - someone who could always be trusted to blow up or say or do something provoking or inappropriate. Psychologists Alan Cavaiola and Neil Lavender have studied this much-discussed but rarely addressed area. Their research showed that the conventional wisdom that some problem workers are "just nuts" was right: a sizeable number of such employees do in fact have full-fledged personality disorders. In Toxic Coworkers, they pinpoint a variety of personality traits and disorders, showing how they come about and offering effective strategies for coping with them. The authors cover the range of familiar types, from hyperactives, histrionics, and sociopaths to narcissists and obsessive-compulsives and provide concrete techniques for surviving them.

5 out of 5 stars Toxic Coworkers: How to Deal with Dysfunctional People on the Job.......2007-08-23

This book has really helped by putting a title to the different people I work with and for and where my frustration comes from. Also it has assisted me in dealing with the different disfunctions of personalities of the people with whom I spend most of my days with. I would recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Dealing with dysfunctional workers.......2007-08-05

This is an interesting little book. It identifies some basic personality disorders and then speculates on how one might deal with such folks to limit the damage that they might do.

What is a personality disorder? The authors note that (page 4) "Personality disorders are long-standing disturbances in personality that usually begin in late adolescence and continue until adulthood." If the case is not too bad, such workers can be productive; if the disorder is pronounced, then real problems can occur in the workplace.

The disorders include the following: paranoid, schizoid, schizotypal, antisocial, narcissistic, histrionic, borderline, obsessive compulsive, avoidant, dependent, and passive aggressive.

For each, the disorder is described and examples provided. There is also discussion of how one might deal with either superiors or coworkers or subordinates who have one or another of the disorders. Some suggestions appear useful, others seem a little weak.

All in all, an interesting volume to read. See if you can identify any disorders in your workplace!

5 out of 5 stars Is one person making you feel crazy?.......2007-03-30

As a physician, I have many patients come to me with physical or emotional symptoms of anxiety. If I discover that these symptoms are connected not throughout their experience but with just one person, say a boss, loved one or co-worker, I often recommend this book. This book brings personality disorders to the lay person. It is very readable and give specific techniques that with make things work smoothly with this person and examples of what will make things more difficult. This is a great read for anyone. I think we will all recognize people in our lives in each of the personality disorders. You will recognize your difficult person in one or more of the personality disorders. This book make you feel instantly sane because you can see that it's not you, that the difficult person can be acurately described by someone who doesn't even know you. An excellent book!

4 out of 5 stars More of a reference book, but a very good reference book!.......2007-01-14

Not the type of book to sit down and just read. In my opinion, it is more of a reference book. Extremely long descriptions of each disorder, which is good in some ways... but the book tends to repeat the same characteristics in various situations... for example: Working with the Narcissistic Administrator, The Narcissistic Coworker and The Narcissistic Subordinate all define the same characteristics... just from different perspectives.

What the authors accomplish is to clearly spell out what you can expect in the workplace from each type of disorder, which is why I bought the book to begin with!

5 out of 5 stars exactly as advertised. Quick shipping........2006-11-04

This is a book I won't go without in the future. Changing jobs with this book should be much easier, as the book helps you understand how to work with dysfunctional people on the job. If you have serious problems with people on the job, this is the book for you.

This book is a must have for anyone in or considering a career in academia as a psychologist. It offers wonderful perspectives for what you should and should not do at all stages of your academic career. As a psychology grad student, I am recommending it to all of my peers. I could not be happier with this book. It is a wonderful source of professional guidance and inspiration.

I was a little disappointed with the depth of the coverage given to the job-search process (probably because that's my main focus right now), but I still think that this book will come in very handy in the future. If you are a psychology major thinking about grad school, a psychology graduate student, or a psychology professor at the beginning of their career, this book has a lot of useful information. There are some missing data spots, but no book is perfect of course.

The Armed Forces Guide to Personal Financial Planning is a must read for soldiers, sailors and airmen. The book begins with chapters on basic personal finance and walks through sections on buying big ticket items (cars, houses, etc..), investing, and planning for retirement. Written uniquely for service members and the different tax and pay considerations they should account for, this book is an invaluable addition to any military bookshelf.

Michael Meese is the new Deputy Head of the Department of Social Sciences and former Director of Economics at West Point. Bart Keiser is also a former Director of Economics at West Point. The Social Sciences faculty is also in the process of writing the 5th Edition, which should be coming out in a few months; so if you can wait, you'll get a more current version. But if you are in the military and are considering major changes to your financial situation in the near term, this book is well worth the investment.

I highly recommend this book for all service members.

I have used Armed Forces Guide to Personal Financial Planning 3rd. Edt. as an invaluble tool. I like it's easy to understand explainations and examples. Nearly any financial questions I had from insurance to investing and estate planning were covered. It also served as a great spring board to help my independent research. Unfortunately, being published in 1994, some material is out of date, with new tax codes in 1997 and the Roth IRA in 1998 not being covered.

1 out of 5 stars Not even well-meaning..........2005-09-04

Not everyone who is poor in America is so because of their own fault. This pointless work would have you believe that NO ONE who is poor in America is so because of their own fault Hello? HELLO?
Big business, to look from the MOST cynical viewpoint, would love for everyone to be rich, just so they could buy more. I'd love to see Ken Lay sentenced to death, myself, but Enron is just an exception. Free market capitalism is the most efficient way to get the most people OUT of poverty....

                5 out of 5 stars a compelling analysis of America's poverty industry.......2000-06-23

"Merchants of Misery" is a damning indictment of unregulated, free-market capitalism and provides a reader with more than enough material to refute the claim that capitalism is synonymous with fredoom, as espoused by Milton Friedman disciples etcetera.

A lucid, searing and compelling analysis of America's poverty industry, "Merchants of Misery" starts off by illustrating how discriminatory banking practices disallow poor and minority coneumers to partake of their services. By refusing banking services (loans) in disadvantaged neighbourhoods, mainstream banks are creating a vacuum that is being filled by cheque-cashers, high-rate mortgage companies and other financial enterprises eager to fleece the poor.

"Merchants of Misery" provides glimpse after glimpse into the lives of real poverty-stricken people and their efforts to fight back. Fighting back by way of consumer rights attorneys, neighbourhood activists and a coalition of average citizens attacking the purveyors of this despicable industry with lawsuits, protests and alternative financial services. A powerful book.

5 out of 5 stars Another War on the Poor.......1997-11-11

How much misery can one person stand in their lifetime? is it not enough to be poor in America? Must one suffer injurious harm and injury at the hands of rent-to-own centers,check-cashing stores, and pay-day lending operations? Michael Hudson catalogs not just the personal misery of those merely seeking a piece of the American dream, he skillfully exposes the corporations behind the merhcants of misery. The names of these corporate perpetrators are all-too-familiar to us--Ford, Chrysler, and NationsBank. Hudson ironically points out that these same corporations, who are unwilling to provide branch operations in the inner city, are perfectly willing to provide finance subsidiaries, check-cashing operations, rent-to-own centers, and a myriad of loan sharking operations that would make the mafia proud. Hudson points out that few states, particularly southern states, have usury laws which prevent these predators from charging anywhere from 20-1,000% for their merchandise. In one case, a TV set, which could have been purchased for $300-400 went for over $1,200 after all the payments were made to a rent-to-own center. Hudson has written an important, must-be-read book detailing yet another war on the poor--the war penalizing those who merely want a piece of the American dream--and get a piece of the American nightmare.
