Book Description
Industry, government, and academic efforts to create a generalized systems engineering process have repeatedly fallen short. The outcome? Systems engineering failures that produce losses like the September 1999 destruction of the Mars Climate Orbiter. A simple information transfer error between teams motivated far-reaching managerial and technical changes at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory-evidence of systems engineering complexity. Struck by the amount of chaos that can quickly develop from such intricacy, the author has devoted several years to the development and refinement of the framework delineated in this work to help you "control the chaos". A Framework for Complex System Development develops a generalized process that distinguishes between "time" and "logical" domains-how I/O evolves over time versus the instantaneous program state. Explicitly characterized and identified, they preserve the framework. By combining these views, you get an application specific process, versatile enough for many different contexts. It also defines the technical activities that constitute the system development process and how they connect and interact with managerial activities. You will be able to integrate these activities and realize the maximum potential for success. A key element to success in today's paradigm of "faster, better, cheaper" systems and decreasing resource levels is a clear, workable plan that can be easily implemented. A Framework for Complex System Development illustrates such a plan, distilling the essential aspects of system design into a logical process for a well-organized development program. With A Framework for Complex System Development, you can use the author's approach-developed in the crucible of the real world-to develop sound complex systems in an organized and efficient manner.

Book Description
Robert Flood and Peter Garber confess to a "fixation on understanding extreme events" such as speculative bubbles, currency reforms, and speculative attacks on fixed exchange rate regimes and metallic monetary standards -- all markers of economic change. This book brings together their research in these areas during the 1980s and early 1990s, highlighting in particular the close relation of their work on bubbles to that of policy switching, or understanding the impact of prospective and past policy changes on individual economic behavior.
Among the earliest contributors to the policy switching literature, Flood and Garber note that policy switching has become popular because the approach permits economists to come to grips with peculiar behavior that surrounds crises and other discrete events. The approach has also allowed economists to combine their understanding of economic behavior in times of crisis with observations of behavior during more normal times.
The papers in the book are grouped into three sections: the first on price bubbles is primarily financial; the second on speculative attacks (on exchange rate regimes) is international in scope; and the third, on policy switching, is concerned with monetary policy.

Customer Reviews:
The market doesn't care if you are a beginner.......2005-08-08
This book is pretty basic and as a beginner you are going to have to learn more focused trading strategies and not just a generalistic overview of what day trading is or should be.
Day trading is all about making buy and sell decisions. When you make a trade either your going to lose money or your going to make money, and some other times you will break even. When you win some body else will lose and so forth, but that's NOT what's important.
The most important aspect of day trading is the knowledge FILTER you employ to make your buy and selling decisions. There are many "fantastic" trading strategies outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most. That's part of your homework as a daytrader. Test, test and test again.
Complicated strategies that rely on a "boat load" of technical indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.
I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner trader is to get information overload. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple strategy that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to make money.
Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade in a practical and effective way. One of those sites is Stress Free Traders ( StressFreeTraders com)
In the end, day trading is all about buying and selling according to your knowledge FILTER. Once you master and follow youre proven filter parameters like a clock, you can expect to start making serious amounts of cash on a consistent basis.
Misha never traded, so what does he know?.......2002-10-27
Having as much experience in trading, I along with thousands of others could have written this book. It's cliche and dated. I am actually quite surprised since this guy has never really day-traded. After getting this book, the one thing Sarkovich taught me is how to write a book about something one does not know anything about. I actually cannot believe all the Stars people give!! Are you all high?!? Its mind boggling? Are you guys for real?... Actually, $3 prices in the used section should tell you something?... For anyone interested in technical analysis, get Murphy's technical analysis of Stocks and commodities or Reminiscence of a stock market operator by Jesse Livermore. Get a Van Tharp book for money management and be patient. Day-trading is tough, and most people can handle other types of trading but not day-trading. And really the only way to learn is to find a mentor like Pristine, a close friend or some trading shop. I wonder if there are a lot of shops around anymore. Misha's is not, not that he would ever trade there, since he is not a trader. ;-)
Nothing but fluff.......2002-10-27
OK, if you want to read something that gives outline view of what Day Trading is about, go ahead and buy this book. If your looking to build a foundation for a successful career in trading, move on. Not only is this book a warmed up re-hash of material covered in dozens of other books, the information is really dated. I suppose that if we could roll the clock back to 1999, you could read this book, start trading and you'd probably feel pretty talented. But in reality, all you needed to know in 1999 was 3 or 4 steps.
1) Pick a stock,
2) Buy the stock
3) Sell it after it goes up.
4) Repeat steps 1 through 3.
Nothing is easy!!.......2002-01-11
This book is ok if you are a new INVESTOR who wants to use Electronic Trading to buy stocks. If you are planning on being an active trader, or a day trader, skip this book. It is just basic order entry, system and level II quote information.
As for the Made Easy part, investing and trading are not easy. If they could be made easy no one would sell you a book.
So you wanna get rich...........2001-06-28
Sure, I would love to beat the market all the time....NOT POSSIBLE....maybe a little? Don't expect to read one book and be an expert. This requires many books{ maybe 30-40] + years of experience [read lots of mistakes]. I would give the book a higher rating but I don't think day trading is EASY at all...the title is very misleading. If you've taken your lumps in this bear market of 2000-2001, you know what I mean. If you're a bear, well finally you're time has come. I've been waiting for this bear since 1992! Good luck!

Book Description
Forging business alliances can vitalize corporate strategies. This book is a road map to the concepts and theories underlying successful business alliances in four critical industries: automobile manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, airlines, and telecommunications. Dr. Culpan offers the essentials of global partnering as seen from a strategic management viewpoint. He examines joint ventures, non-equity alliances, and business options designed to give a competitive edge over other allied firms. New conceptual models help to clarify various strategies and collaborative processes. By comparing the four major industries--and specific companies in each--this study explores not only the uniqueness of its subjects, but also the common grounds of various multinationals. Through key insights and ideas, the possibilities and realities of corporate alliances begin to emerge. Attention is also paid to the decision-making process as it relates cooperative ventures, as well as to the inevitable managerial challenges of forming, and managing, strategic alliances. The result is an astute analysis ideal for teachers, students, and strategists seeking fresh insights into the workings and benefits of corporate alliance.

It seems like all of the biggest names in the computer industry are getting the celebrity bio treatment these days. But no corporate CEO deserves it more than Larry Ellison, the charismatic head of Oracle Corp. This isn't your standard, dry, "learn-from-his-example" type of life. It's not that Ellison's life doesn't offer the same lessons in hard-won business success as some of his colleague's, because it certainly does. It's just vastly more entertaining.
In The Difference Between God and Larry Ellison, author Mike Wilson delivers a fascinating and genuinely interesting portrayal of Silicon Valley's most notorious bad boy, constructed from hundreds of interviews with friends, colleagues, and those unfortunate enough to stand in Ellison's way. There are plenty of behind-the-scenes stories of the growth and worldwide success of Oracle, which Ellison founded in 1977. Plus, there's plenty of the good stuff: tales of Ellison's truly fast-lane lifestyle, filled with big boats, beautiful women, and celebrity friends. While this book probably won't transform you into a fan of Ellison's, you will be grateful for a chance to observe him--from a safe distance.
The punchline is "God doesn't think he's Larry Ellison," of course.
Book Description
A recent Forbes listed Ellison as the fifth richest man in the world, and the second richest active player (behind Gates) in the technology world. Oracle Corporation, of which he is founder and CEO, is the fastest-growing software database company in the world, and the darling of technology investors. If you withdraw cash from an ATM, make an airline reservation, hook up your TV to the Internet, then you're using Oracle. All of this makes Ellison the man investors, techies, and people-in-the-know want to know more about.
The ultimate self-made man, Ellison began Oracle with a $1,200 investment and doubled its sales in eleven of its first twelve years. But he's a ruthless businessman who has used misdirection and half-truths to create one of the great high-tech success stories. He is also a daredevil sportsman with a 78-foot yacht, a number of fast jets, and beautiful women on his arm. If Gates is the nerd-King of the Valley, Ellison is its Warren Beatty.
Mike Wilson has interviewed more than a hundred of Ellison's friends and enemies as well as Ellison himself to create an entertaining and provocative portrait of this enigmatic and visionary businessman.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2005-04-17
I absoultly loved this book. I am currently recieving my MBA, and it gave me a whole new perspective about how busniess can be, how it can suceed, and fail. Also, Ellisons sotry is realy fabulous, and the author does a great job of interviewing many of Ellison's ex-wives, ex-employyes etc. This gives a very realistic viw of Oracle, and how they felt about Ellison. I started ths book this morning, and I simply could not put it down until an hour ago when i finished it. Great Read!
Interesting reading.......2005-03-11
It's a very good book in terms of the history of the computing giants that shaped the world. It kept my attention long enough to dedicate 2 days to reading it cover to cover. As an Oracle programmer, it helped me understand some of the thoughts I had of the company since working with their product since the early 90's.
The author tried the address the book as a novel, skipping around in time and making it difficult to follow. You go from 1977 to 1989 to 1991 to 1984 to 1996 to ... (you get what I mean). Confusing.
This is the type of book that needed to be more linear in timeline or overlapping in timeline, but not arranged the way it was. Still, very enjoyable and worth the read for those that enjoy the behind the scenes action that shaped technology as we know it today.
A candid look at Ellison.......2005-02-14
Okay, so who is this guy Larry Ellison? He's the man behind Oracle, one of the world's largest software companies. Not only is he known for his "battles" with Bill Gates of Microsoft, but also for his personal and professional exploits.
Even though I thoroughly enjoyed this biography, I felt it was lacking something. I'm not sure what exactly, but I walked away feeling Ellison to be some sort of a lone egomaniac, using everyone and everything around him to further grow Oracle - and by extension, him - into even greater success.
Not that there is little biographic value, because there is. His childhood is chronicled, how he left behind his humble beginnings and attained greatness. Had it been any other person, they would perhaps have been forever relegated to a life of poverty, misery, etc. But Ellison overcame that and became a billionaire. So if anything, it is a story of triumph, both in his own life - though admittedly filled with tragedies of divorce, etc. - and in Oracle's.
I would suggest that you read it, but don't make it the sole biography. There are at least a couple of others, one even with commentary by Ellison. Check them out! :)
Sure, Bill Gates is richer, but I'd rather be Larry Ellison!.......2005-01-03
This book was a great read, and it was a blast reading about the great Larry Ellison. Larry Ellison's personality comes out in this book. He is a fun, flamboyant, in-your-face billionaire who knows how to enjoy the money he makes. Big houses, sharp clothes, fast cars, and hot women! Oh, yeah, he also built up a pretty good business.
Larry, you're the man!!
Long, repetetive and incomplete.......2004-08-22
This book could have perfect at 100 pages. Instead the book goes on and on about how bad, delusional, self-centered and lying Larry Ellison is. It also belabores how decadent and immoral are Oracle's marketing and sales people.
The book does not really paint a picture of how Oracle became successful. The time line is blurred, instead, we get repetetive stories ripped out of different periods in Oracle's history.
The explanations of database industry and technology sector overall are weak.
Perhaps if the book was shorter, I would not be as negative, but as it stands at 350 pages, I can not recommend it.

Book Description
During the 1880s, the tobacco manufacturing industries of Britain and America were revolutionized by the introduction of mechanized cigarette production. The development of this novel, image-laden product constituted a triumph for the methods of mass production and mass distribution in this most traditional of consumer goods industries. The Global Cigarette charts the way in which these innovations in manufacturing and marketing methods led to the formation in 1902 of the British American Tobacco Co. as an Anglo-American multinational joint venture designed to promote cigarettes in international markets. Based on archive materials from a wide variety of sources, including the company's own internal records, this book provides the first authoritative account of BAT's evolution and growth up until the Second World War. In particular, The Global Cigarette shows the way in which the company developed a vast array of international operating subsidiaries, explores how it managed these enterprises in different political and cultural contextsDSnotably in China and IndiaDSand analyses the way in which the company, as a mature multinational enterprise, coped with the severe international economic dislocations of the 1930s. In the era of globalization, this account of the operational and organizational arrangements of a prefigurative 'global' company will shed light on current debates on alliances, joint ventures, and international business.
Book Description
This book brings together a carefully edited selection of new and previously published articles by Peter Lloyd on the opening of national economies to international trade and investment and the formation of a truly global economy. It illustrates the major changes to the world trading system and international economy that have emerged as a result of the liberalization of trade and investment during the last few decades.
The essays combine theoretical analysis with empirical research on trends in the global economy. Along with a biographical introduction, the book features new introductions to each of the parts on protectionism, trade liberalization, investment and trade in the Asia-Pacific and intra-industry trade. The book presents a unified treatment of trends at national, regional and multilateral levels, as well as discussing the recent Asian crises.
This book will be welcomed by those interested in the developments which have led to the 'opening-up' of the global economy in recent decades as well as international trade specialists, those in government and international organizations, and growth and development economists.
