Adam Smith is the best known among economists for his book, The Wealth of Nations, often viewed as the keystone of modern economic thought. Others, often heterodox economists and social philosophers, on the contrary, focus on Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments, and explore his moral theory. This work treats these dimensions of Smith’s work as elements in a seamless moral philosophical vision, demonstrating the integrated nature of these works and Smith’s other writings. Although many practitioners today see the study of Smith as an antiquarian exercise, this book weaves Smith into a constructive critique of modern ecnomic analysis (engaging along the way the work of Nobel Laureates Gary Becker, Amarty Sen, Douglass North, and James Buchanan) and builds bridges between that discourse and the other social sciences.

Evensky(E) has done a great job in covering the major contributions of Adam Smith.He correctly integrates The Theory of Moral Sentiments(TMS,1759;1st edition) with The Wealth of Nations(WN;1776).He shows the importance of Smith's sixth and final edition of TMS in which Smith added a completely new part,Part VI,that dealt with the necessity of promoting morality as a social good that would generate positive externalities to the society as a whole.E correctly shows that Smith viewed government in a positive light and saw that it had to successfully carry out certain functions in order for that society to be prosperous.

My major criticism is that E does not place enough emphasis on the dark side of the Invisible Hand-the undepletable ,detrimental externalities that negatively impact the moral,political,social,martial,and intellectual(as well as limiting the extension of the Invisible Hand by destroying the capability of the work force to make a series of continuous improvements in the machinery that they use in the mass production process)capabilities of the work force as a whole,resulting in "...the almost entire corruption and degeneracy of the great body of the people"(Smith,p.734;Modern Library edition-Cannan) unless government intervenes to prevent or reduce the social damages .E refers to this problem in his footnote 21 on p.13 of his book:"It should be noted that Smith is keenly aware of the potential for technical advancement in production to numb the minds of workers".He returns to the problem again in chapter 9 where he treats the role of government in Smith's system.However,he only spends 1 page discussing how the provision of education(he leaves out the importance of religious instruction and hence misses the reason explaining why Smith added a new Part VI to TMS in 1790. Part VI was required in order to provide the theoretical foundation for his discussions of mass education on pp.716-768 of WN)is viewed .E needed to spend an entire chapter on Smith's careful discussion of all of the negative spillover effects that will result from the operation of the Invisible Hand on pp.734-741.The statement above that it "...numbs the minds..." is an understatement similar to the understatements made by Robert Heilbroner about the "... stultifying effect of mass production..." that would lead to " ...a decline in manly virtues..."(Heilbroner,p.68,The Worldly Philosophers).Smith's much more emphatic characterization and detailed treatment of the actual problem is correct.The problem is much more severe then a decline in manly virtues or numbing of the mind.Every future author on Smith needs to devote one chapter of his book to this actual,not just potential, problem.The failure to deal with it leads directly to Marx's analysis.

      The authors of this book ask the question, "Are you doing business on the Web? Or are you just on the Web?" According to the author, technology consultant Patricia Seybold, most companies have web sites that give some information about their company and their products. Today, customers are demanding much more from websites, they expect to be able to purchase on line, interact electronically, and be part of a community in cyberspace.

      The main point of the book is to show companies that if they meet these expectations, they will grow. In order to achieve this growth, companies need to evaluate their customers. Specifically, they need to start with the basic question of who exactly are their end customers. What to these end customers want? What do these end customers expect from the company?

      Once these questions are answered, it is important to develop the electronic structure that will serve the needs of the customers. Create a web site that not only has the basic information on the company and the product, but allows the customer to shop, order, purchase, and track delivery. Companies need to capture personal information by ensuring customers fill out an on-line profile. By collecting these profiles, it will help answer the previous questions and allow the company to better anticipate the needs of its customers.

      The author also argues for designing or redesigning business processes from the outside in, specifically organized around your end customers, not around the products and services. The inside-out model, the one designed around products and services, will not work in today's e-commerce, according to the author.

      Further advice includes making it easy for consumers to do business with the company, and they will help themselves to want they need. This will empower customers to make choices, thus they will have reasons to keep coming back. The author uses numerous examples to demonstrate how this is more difficult than it sounds. By reading about these companies' experiences combined with the solid advice offered, the reader will be taking the first steps to developing an effective e-business strategy.

      5. Let the customer specify if they want proactive notification.
      6. Recruit thousands of business partners who can represent your firm to customers
      7. Make it easy for your suppliers to deal with you.
      8. Focus on excellence in the customer experience.

      1. Use online forums to overcome internal organizational barriers to success.
      2. Use streamline electronic forms that are visible to all legitimate parties involved.
      3. Make the right bets on technology

      Being a college student, I was at first reluctant to read Seybold's book as a class assignment. In hindsight, it's one of the best decisions I could've made. This book presents dynamic ideas that are being overlooked at universities today. Rather than focusing on the "how to's" Customers.com gives you the "why's" of the customer market. Talk about making me think! Not only did this book provide an excellent point of reference for class discussions, I found myself unconsciously transferring the knowledge into my job. One thing to take note of: THIS IS MORE THAN A TECHIES BOOK! Anyone in business will undoubtedly benefit from reading it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

      Got this when it came out and gave it a read. Three years have passed and I just referred to it to support writing a paper on technology. The details are good and the higher level dialogue do a nice job of getting the message across without belaboring anything. If you are about the web and doing business, this is worth the bucks and time.

          This book would be OK for a young person with no sales experience who has never given thought to ways to get along with and influence people. Anyone who has read books on how to read body language, books such as "Winning Through Intimidation" or books on how to close sales will be very disappointed in this. There is nothing new here. If you need such advice as being told that the way you look is very important in how people view you, or that spending time listening to people instead of doing all the talking will make people like you more, then you may get something out of this. Otherwise, you will find nothing new or useful in this book.

          This book was a pleasure to read, with numerous examples of how to conduct yourself so that people, well, listen. Hamlin draws on her experience as a trial lawyer's consultant and in television, breaking down the communication process into an examination of the motivations of the participants.

          Take away only a few tips from this book, and you are bound to get better responses from anyone you talk with - by phone, by email, in person.

          The only downside to the book is that as it was written in 1988 there is no mention of Internet communications. Examples and tips specific to email, instant messaging, voice over IP, etc., would have been helpful, but it's easy enough to extend the ideas and lessons to pretty much any medium.

            I found out about Helen Harkness from a business colleague who has a graduate degree in business from Harvard University. He highly recommended her books and career counseling. Having taught in public schools for 5 years and then worked in commercial real estate for more than 20 years, I came to a place where I needed a change and a new challenge. I purchased this book and could not put it down! It helped me so much that I purchased her other books. I found all of them helpful.

            If you are dissatisfied with your present career and looking for a career change, finding a career for the first time or retiring and wanting to start something new, this is the book for you. Helen helps you sort through and begin to see there are no obstacles (certainly not age)to becoming true to yourself in your work. Helen will help you get in touch with your "true authentic self" and help you see your natural gifts and interests in a way you may never have seen yourself before. Her research is timely and the information will give you insight for your future career. I applaud her work and highly recommend this book.

Because of my interest in anti-aging issues, I purchased three excerpts from a book titled Don't Stop the Career Clock: Rejecting the Myths of Aging for a New Way to Work in the 21st Century by Helen Harkness, Ph.D. I was so impressed by what I read in the excerpts that I immediately purchased the book.

            If the excerpts were impressive, the book blew me away. I finally found someone who understands how to successfully manage the aging process.

            Dr. Helen Harkness is well past retirement age but wisely refrains from revealing her chronological age. However, I can tell you that after meeting her at her office in Garland, TX, she functions as a dynamic, fifty-year old. She maintains an active professional schedule as president of Career Design Associates, Inc., which specializes in individual and organizational renewal through career and management training programs. She has been an English professor, department chair, director of adult education, acting dean of business development, and academic dean and provost at the University of Plano in the 1970s. When I last corresponded with her, she was off to Australia to deliver a keynote address.

            Don't Stop the Career Clock is filled with meticulous research to support the author's thinking and beliefs about aging and working. There is something on every page worth highlighting. Particularly helpful for those vacillating between retirement and continuing to be productive in one capacity or another, is the chapter "Seven Steps for Resetting Your Career Clock." In this chapter, Dr. Harkness provides numerous exercises to help you think about what you are good at, and what you might really want to do with the rest of your life. The exercises alone are worth ten times the cost of the book.

            What I personally found most helpful is the chapter "Learning a New Way to Tell Time." In it, Dr. Harkness says, ". . . because of our social and cultural expectations, we program ourselves to begin to fall apart at a certain designated age, and we oblige.". She then gives her "live long, die fast" contemporary model for aging which should give hope to anyone over age 65 who has bought into the myth that "it's too late for me".

            If you are "middle aged" or older, this is a "must read" book. If you are younger, get a head start on designing a fabulous future for yourself. Don't Stop the Career Clock will show you how to do it.

            Since I'm a middle Baby Boomer, it was interesting to see the perspective of a few Generation X couples interviewed by the author.

            These Generation X couples expected the Baby Boomers to break the Social Security system, so there won't be an Social Security left for them......and therefore they should be more self-reliant than the Boomers. The X'ers also thought retirement should be replaced with having a flexible set of work skills that allow you to work until you are dead. The X's will have a hard time building any significant net worth considering the average college loans are now $20,000 and the X'ers sampled had between $3,000 and $8,000 in credit card debt.

            As a Baby Boomer, I am glad to see Generation X people plan to be more self reliant for their financial future.......my generation needs people to buy our stocks when we sell them for retirement living expenses!

            I really enjoyed financial planner Deena Katz's recommendation to focus on low cost index funds....since I am a huge fan of Index Funds. Her recommendation for three index funds with 50% invested in the S&P 500, 25% in the Russell 2000, and 25% in foreign stocks is a very reasonable recommendation.

            I also enjoyed the portion of the book about salaries and expenses as a function of geography. Choosing where you work or retire to can have a dramatic impact on your living expenses.

            The author's opinion is that between this book and his first book, Retire on Less Than You Think....you can easily figure out how to live within your means today.... and you can also learn to live on less than the 70-80% of pre-retirement income that is assumed by Wall Street and the mutual fund industry.

            Over-all a great practical guide on how to live within your means through smart planning about college selections, autos, and credit cards.

            I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including:

            Of course, the best reading skill is the use of discernment. Keep the info that resonates/is useful and toss the rest. I was on the right track, but as a baby boomer, did not get on the track soon enough. I read this book one week ago and used some of the advice. I have already seen significant results in cold, hard cash. That says it all.

            I am also going to share the reviews with my smoking cessation classes. They are all going to have significant extra money soon.

            I feel like Fred didn't do a lot of research to write this book. He cites interviews with 'experts' but those interviewed sound too much like the author's own voice. Sort of like the phony 'man on the street' interviews you see in Cosmo magazine.

            Who is this book for? If it is for the young, then why a chapter on retirement and funding your children's education? If it is for those ready to retire, then the reader probably already knows all this information, and tons more.

            Self help books such as this one are only helpful if the author has done due diligence, and really dug deep to find facts.

            This book would be a great gift for a graduating senior from high school or college, but is of little use to some one who has been managing their personal finances for years. He discusses debt,insurance,education,car payments,credit cards, and retirement.If you understand that you should avoid credit card debt, stay away from car payments, not buy gimmick insurance, and max out your 401K contribution you do not need this book. I suggest "Financial Peace" or "Total Money Makeover" both from Dave Ramesay to really it more in depth and to get your money's worth.

            As a younger person (in her late twenties) who is interested in securing her financial future and looking to increase her financial knowledge, I found this book to be lacking in several ways. While many financial books offer similar advice, they often offer new perspectives, Fred Brock seems to just repeat and mirror concepts from other books as well as his previous book. If you have read more than one other volume on financial advice, then you will find yourself a little bored. Much of his advice is common sense and not mindblowingly original. He stresses similar money-saving concepts as the "latte factor" and extends it to apply to soda, lunch, clothes, etc. He stresses the obvious - if you don't consume as much, you save more.

            My biggest criticism of the book would be that Brock is too narrow with his advice. That is to say, his thesis that certain areas of the country offer more bang for your buck and will give you a more improved lifestyle for the money, all seem to be to be an attempt to justify his own move from an urban area to a rural one. He devotes many charts to displaying how families in San Francisco or New York are worse off than those in less urban areas. While I agree with this in theory, he doesn't take into account the cultural benefits from living in such areas. As someone who has always lived in an urban city, I know of course that my income would stretch farther elsewhere, but for me that does not outweigh an urban lifestyle.

            Much of Brock's arguments can be condensed into a smaller volume, most probably an essay. He stretches many of his arguements so that they bleed into each chapter, albeit perhaps to pound in the point to the reader. All that being said, although not completely unhelpful, there are many other books on the market that would be of more help to most Americans than this one. I found this volume to be sadly disappointing and not as helpful as expected from the team of Brock and the NYTimes.

              We read the book as part of a business strategy class in my MBA program.
              The book is very insightful. Besides the fact, that the venture ultimately went belly-up, Hanlon describes his methodology for raising capital. He raised +$90 million over 7 years - a significant achievement, considering that he did not have huge investors right away, but focused on "grass-roots" fund raising.
              I was impressed and took many lessons learned away from his approach.
              He details his milestone fund raising and the principles he founded the company on. The book furthermore is an application guide on how to identify your target customers and on how to market towards them, so that they will not only buy your product, but also help you finance the venture that designs and manufactures the product - quite impressive and an absolutely novel approach.
              Before you pass judgement, based on what you have read in the press, I recommend highly to read Dan Hanlon's account of the dream he lived and embarked on realizing. If you still think Hanlon was full of it, well that is an opinion, too, but at least you have exposed yourself to both sides.

              Not sure of the complete story of what happened with EH, I was curious to learn more. The history of the start up venture was interesting as were stories from Sturgis. Even the section of the "gearhead" related topics weren't too hard to follow, as I was afraid I'd be confused. But overall, I don't really understand what happened except that the financing options ran out. But why? That area is foggy and seemed condensed in the later chapters. It makes you wonder what the 2nd side of the story is. I think some professional editing would've helped in the story, as well. The writing was obviously as Dan Hanlon would speak aloud. But that tone gets tiresome and he sometimes gets off on tangets. Perhaps the book wouldn't have been as long either.

              Some of the best books ever, are the ones that friends give me. Of course, it helps to have smart friends! My brother bought an Excelsior-Henderson motorcycle. He loves it. Convincing my other brother to buy all three of us Dan Hanlon's book.

              It is first of all, a great recap of the seven plus years of E-H's struggle from the man at the helm. But is really is a great business "how to" or perhaps "how not to" launch a capital intensive manufacturing business. The tales of fund raising are not for the faint of heart.

              Serious about a startup business? Read this book first. It is so fast paced, that I was able to read the whole 401 pages in just two sessions. Some great photos included, as well as some corporate documents like the list of E-H dealers.

              Even if you are not going for a capital intensive venture, it will still help. The passages on corporate culture were great. And the interaction with Wall Street was fun reading. Oh yea, everyone that knows anything about E-H has second guessed Hanlon. He convinced me that every single criticism was for the most part, untrue. One example is the building. It just "looks" expensive. The true costs were amazingly low.

              If you are serious about business and enjoy motorcycles [riding or watching them ride down the street], this is a must have. One of my top twenty picks.
