    Book Description

Over the past decade European economic integration has seen considerable institutional success, but the economic performance of the EU has been varied. While macroeconomic stability has improved and an emphasis on cohesion preserved the EU economic system has not delivered satisfactory growth
performance. This book is the report of a high-level group commissioned by the President of the European Commission to review the EU economic system and propose a blueprint for an economic system capable of delivering faster growth along with stability and cohesion. It assesses the EU's economic
performance, examines the challenges facing the EU in the coming years, and presents a series of recommendations.

3 out of 5 stars An acceptable introduction to mySAP.com, but light on detail.......2002-09-01

Sorry, but this is more an SAP advertisement for why you should consider mySAP.com, than a reference on what it is. In fairness, the various industry solutions are reasonably well explained, and so is how mySAP.com addresses those industries. But it's really about the level of depth and detail, which is not much in this case. For example, at the end of each chapter, a case study is provided. These, however, are generally a bit vague and "marketing-sounding", while the name of the company or client is often omitted, affecting credibility.

Granted, the whole subject is extensive, however, I was expecting more. It doesn't help that this is a translation from German, which tends to make the reading a bit "stiff" and academic compared to what we are accustomed to in North America.

You need not be a SAP R/3 consultant to benefit from this interesting book. In fact, I am not an R/3 expert and have little direct experience with the product. My motivation for reading this book is to better understand ERP in general as it applies to various industry segments, and SAP R/3 and PeopleSoft in particular because of a consulting assignment.

Before reading this book I was under the mistaken impression that SAP R/3 was inflexible and required any company implementing it to completely redesign their business processes to accommodate the software. In many respects this is true. However, SAP has a tagline that "All Industries Are Not Created Equal", which means that a generic solution enforced by an application is not a real solution at all. Using this book I discovered two things: (1) SAP R/3 is a lot more flexible than I heard and can be highly customized using industry-specific solution maps to a number of industries, and (2) the market challenges of the 20 industries covered in this book.

What I like is the consistent way each industry if presented, using a fixed format that discusses each industry's market trends, requirements and solution maps. As a consultant who works across a wide landscape of industries I was able to quickly absorb some of the characteristics of each industry and their key challenges, as well as see how an ERP solution fit within them. Of course, learning about how SAP as a product supports these industries is also useful, and I suspect essential to consultants and constancies focused on this particular product.

The book is a quick read, informative and definitely a worthwhile investment to anyone who is involved in ERP in general and SAP R/3 in particular.

A heckler is in the audience; the overhead projector breaks; the allotted speech time runs out--these are just some of the panic-producing crises, interruptions, or distractions easily dealt with in this first-aid guide for business speakers. Here, first-timers and experienced pros alike will find everything they need to organize, write, and deliver effective, entertaining speeches--from installations to toasts and roasts. The guide pinpoints every possible speaking contingency--from failed electricity to a bored audience--and for each one tells how to prevent it, what to do about it, and what to say about it. Its treasury of witty, off-the-cuff lines and audience participation devices helps speakers access the perfect words to cover any situation and captivate any audience.

5 out of 5 stars Great on so many levels.......2003-04-27

I have many books on presenting and though they come and go on my desk this book stays there all the time. Why?

I'm sick of books that promise you that with just a few easy tips you'll be a great presenter overnight. In many cases I wonder if those authors have ever given a presentation. "What to say when . . ." is clearly written by someone who's been in the trenches and who appreciates the fact that presentation skills need lots of work - and why you need to have ways out of the tricky situations. In many ways it's like being with a small group of top presenters swapping war stories round a dinner table; the attitude is just as important as the information.

Second, this book actually gives you hope that when something bad happens in your presentation you might well be able to recover the situation. When you hear of how experienced speakers saved the day you will stop reacting to setbacks with total panic and instead think "How would the Walters deal with this?"

From the presenter's point of view, the most important message in this book is almost lost in the introduction. In a sidebar by Nate Booth, he makes the point that we'd rather not know - that sooner or later, something unexpected IS going to happen to you. I see so many presenters adopting a formal and distant approach in the hope that everything will go well, and then collapsing when things don't go according to plan. If you accept that nothing is perfect, you'll be taking the first step to relaxing in front of your audience - and giving a much better presentation.

The book is also readable for amusement. There are many examples of how to use humor to defuse tricky situations, and of course many examples of accidents that in retrospect are hilarious. My favorite is the story of the guy who skipped down the aisle to receive an award for running a department with the longest accident-free record. The inevitable happened, of course - but in a way that's much funnier than you could imagine. What was that? Oh, you'll have to buy the book to find out.

5 out of 5 stars What you see is what you get (and need).......2002-08-11

Nice book with some good advice on staying out of trouble on the playform and lots of down-to-earth tips on what to do and say when the going gets rough. Nine out of ten situations described are possible real life scenarios and the suggestions almost always make good sense. Which is really important for a book like this. Best read just before you're going out to a "hard talk" with a live audiance and need to make sure that you win the day. Its even funny. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you should and shouldn't say!.......2001-07-13

This great book is wonderfully organized, and very comprehensive to boot! The humourous stories help drive the points home, and the "lines" to say are generally easy to remember.

I think by reading through the entire book, you get a good feel for what is appropriate and inappropriate, and can then "wing it" if you haven't gotten a memorized response at hand.

As a public speaking professional, I will keep this in my collection, and review regularly, just in case!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book on Damage Control.......1999-09-16

This book covers every possible faux pas or disaster on the platform and helps you to recover with grace and confidence. Filled with excellent examples of what to say and do. If you liked this book you'll love Knockout Presentations.

For those of us who have gotten to know Chris Farrell on "Right On The Money", this book is a long awaited and welcomed companion to his public television show. A great introduction to those not familiar with his warm style. Good reading;great information.

                    5 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2000-06-20

For a young man who does not know much about personal finances, this book has been great. It told me all the things that everyone is supposed to know, but I didn't. I am young and inexpierienced in handling my finances, and this book appealed to me because I do not think it was written to appeal to the know it all Wall Street audience. This book is already helping me get my finances together, and hopefully will see more from Chris Farrell in the future.

I totally disagree with these other reviewers. This book puts the "personal" back in personal finance. Other books are like automotive manuals - look up the problem and find the answer. This book has great narrative and puts a human face on the problem

5 out of 5 stars Great information - saved me thousands.......2003-11-10

I recently opened a business in the St Paul area and bought this book as it is the only one that I could find with information specific to this area. What impressed me is that Dicks is himself a successful business person so his information goes beyond the typical attorney who graduated with high grades but has no real world experience as an entrepneneur.Sadly, many of the books sold are also by "paper authorities" with no real world experience.I highly recommend "Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business In Minnesota" and also recommend the "Small Business Legal Kit" which comes with a convenient disk. I now have all the forms at my disposal..from eployee forms, to real estate forms, leases, contracts, shareholder meetings forms, hw to sell stock forms, independent contractor etc in any easy fill in the blanks format.Great informationa dn it did save me thousands.

5 out of 5 stars A good nuts to bolts book for business people in Minnesota.......2003-11-09

J.W. Dicks is perhaps one of the most under-rated authors out there. How to Incorporate and Start a Business in Minnesota covers every essestial topic you need to know to start your business right. And best of all, it offers information specific to Minnesota. Most books are general.

I found the section on different corporations; S-Corporations, LLC's and LLP's really interesting. Dick's discusses the pro's and cons of each one and shows you which one is best for you.

Dick's also goes into detail about preparing contracts and leases. Dealing with the law and raising capital.

All in all. "How to Incorporate and Start a Business in Minnesota" is a MUST READ for any Minnesota business person.

3 out of 5 stars A good intro but not specific enough........2002-04-24

If you're looking for an introduction to incorporation (or starting any new business for that matter), this book covers a lot of topics at a high level. A decent book if you're contemplating incorporation and trying to decide if it makes sense for you.

If you've done some research, you know you want to incorporate, and you want detailed information on how to proceed, this is not the book for you! It gave me just enough information to raise plenty of questions for which I still don't have the answers.
