It was logical to expect that the European Economic and Monetary Union would lead ineluctably to an autonomous European defense; the very size of the European Union seems to demand it. The EU eventually will reach the point where its economic and demographic weight will far exceed that of the United States. Can it not be expected too that the EU will seek to make this weight felt internationally? Cogan tracks the halting creation of an independent European military structure, a third way between national armies and ATO, since the Iron Curtain's fall. With the Cold War's end and subsequent western engagements in Central and Eastern Europe, it is no longer a question of whether NATO and the EU compare; they now must relate. They have to coordinate their planning and force postures so as to avoid duplication of resources and efforts. Although NATO's integrated command structure theoretically was an anomaly with the end of the Cold War, it nevertheless turned out to be the case in Bosnia, and later Kosovo, that nothing was possible until the Americans intervened. If you've been charged with setting up a public key infrastructure (PKI) for an organization, or if you're just not content to trust commercial products' claims of security, have a look at Secure Electronic Commerce: Building the Infrastructure for Digital Signatures and Encryption for a clear and complete overview of digital certificate management techniques. This richly detailed and heavily referenced volume generally stays clear of implementation specifics. Readers can count on it to provide the background in concepts and terminology that they'll need to make PKI design decisions.

Without exception, this is a very clearly written book, but there are rather few conceptual diagrams--and a few more graphics might have clarified the relationships among entities. Regardless, it's abundantly evident that the authors did a great deal of research--a rarity in this field. Nearly every other sentence contains a reference to an endnote. To truly understand how PKI works, study this book and the material it references, and participate in online forums on PKI issues. --David Wall

Highly recommended - This is still the best intro book I've seen on PKI. Precisely and clearly written. Can't wait for the second edition, though, as this edition is getting a bit dated.

Greak Book for a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Overview.......1998-09-03

This book is great at understanding the major components of a Public Key Infrastructure and the surrounding issues. You certainly would not walk away being able to set up a PKI, but you would be able to discuss it intelligently. If you are trying to come up to speed on PKI, this is the book for you. The subject is too big to cover everything in one book; so, I would also recommend picking up some more books that look at security issues specifically. One recommendation is E-Commerce Security by Ghosh.

Clearly written guide to public key infrastructure.......1998-08-26

Ford and Baum do a great job explaining the ins and outs of public key infrastructures, covering both the technical and non-technical (legal, administrative, financial, etc.) issues with clarity and insight. Chapters 6 and 7 are especially worthwhile for those looking at the latest IETF PKIX standards.

California is a difficult place to start a business and many that do fail. This book is easy to read, well laid out and takes you from the planning stage through execution of your business plan into handling the early crises of owning and operating your own business. It has helpful forms and contacts in the state of California that you would want and need. I strongly recommend getting it and reading it from cover to cover prior to beginning a business.

Excellent advice, easy to read, to the point.......1998-09-14

I just read the first 2 chapters of the book and flipped through the rest. This book is fantastic. Ive read other small business help books (like one by Burstiner) and they were terrible. They put you to sleep and are not easy to read. Jenkins' book gets right to the point and sums up everything you need to get started. I didnt have to read through pages of pointless details that dont nessisarily apply to every business. Those details can always be sought elsewhere if needed and not drag a getting started book under.

If you want to know the ground rules of doing business in California, this book covers it all, in easily understood English, not legalese. FORBES Magazine (11/96) recently did an article on business self-help books, concluding most were not worth the paper they were printed on. However, they cited 4 such books they did consider very worthwhile, and this 50-state series was one of the four FORBES liked. The pre-addressed postcards to various government and private agencies, to obtain needed forms, booklets, and posters, are extremely useful, to satisfy both federal and California requirements.

For instance, simple data can make an impact in a pie chart with overlaps of shadow or color, while complex information may demand more elaborate choices. Oh come on, it's not that bad.......2006-03-04

Because of all of the bad reviews on this book, I decided to borrow it from the library instead of buy it. It isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, and in fact, it's a rather useful resource.

Previous reviews claim that the author suggests the decorate diagrams and presentations with clipart and other garish techniques. Indeed, the author does suggest using symbols, colors, different stylistic techniques. However, he also tells the reader as often as possible, "Don't let the effects impede [the content]" and such. He states very often to use stylistic techniques such as 3D effects and symbols for clarity only if they will serve to add a level of information to the diagram that will facilitate understanding. In fact, he points out repeatedly in the section about how to make symbols - keep them stylistically consistent, keep them simple, keep them clear, and don't add any unnecessary accessories.

I think this book is a good resource as a methodical system of determining which type of diagram to display your information in.

Erk! I bought it!.......2005-04-29

Well, we all make mistakes - at least it is pretty in parts. A good guide to whether a restaurant chef can actually cook is to order an omelette simple - if it's on your table within a couple of minutes, the chef probably knows what he/she is doing. In the field of statistical graphics, finding out what the author thinks about pie charts is usually a good indicator - in this case, Mr Bounford seems to think they're a good idea, and he even thinks it's a good idea to add some chart junk, distort the information by rotation or to use fake 3D effects, use multiple colours and so on.
I guess a second indicator of quality is to check the index - has this man even read Tufte, Cleveland, Wainer? - it appears not.
This book is appalling!
If you like colouring-in with crayons, but need some guidelines, this is probably the book for you. Actually, if you are looking for new and interesting (read "brightly coloured") ways of mis-representing your data, or for transforming data into mis-information, again, this may be the book for you. Mr Bounford has invented some distortions that have not occurred to me even in my statistical nightmares!
I am, however, keeping my copy - it's a great teaching aid - on what not to do!

Great ideas for communicating with real people.......2004-05-17

I found this book to be a very useful resource for creating visually interesting informational graphics. I'm a technical communicator for a marketing-oriented company working in a number of different media, including print and web, and it is important to be able to attract and keep people's attention while conveying information. It may be that some of the methods provided in this book contradict E.Tufte's doctrines, but an ivory-tower nose-in-the-air approach ain't gonna move no product! Maybe I'm not a "serious Information Architect" -- That being said, I found the author's presentation and descriptions of the various types of charts and graphs helpful, and some of his layout ideas will be immediately valuable to me in my work.

A guide for what NOT to do.......2003-12-02

As an experienced information designer I bought this book with great hope. Unfortunately what I saw appalled me. This book turns many of the principles of designing good information graphics on their head. If you have read Ed Tufte's books and appreciate his concepts of reducing "chart junk" this book will astound you in actually suggesting you dress up a graph with pretty background graphics and cute icons.

Not only does this book present questionable aesthetic values, but even promotes the creation of misleading diagrams. One example is the suggestion to just make a 90 degree turn with a bar on a bar chart if that one doesn't fit conveniently.

There are so many bad examples in this book that it is almost useful as a guide for what NOT to do when designing charts and diagrams.

What you can do, not what you should do.......2002-09-21

A visually appealing book that shows off many digital effects and possible ways of creating digital diagrams. Whether or not you should do some of the things shown is another matter.

This book is not for the serious Information Architect - but may be useful for a designer or graphic artist.

Read Tufte and Wainer first - but then you won't find much new or useful here.

An Outstanding Overview of a Complex Sector of the Economy.......2004-06-09

The aerospace industry has been essentially a "black box" little understood and magical in operation. Historians of flight tend to concentrate on invention, research and development, test and evaluation, and the details of military or civil operations. Accordingly, there are good histories of the development of certain aircraft, such as the F-4, and good histories of its use as an instrument of air power in the American military. There is a failure, however, to explore and understand what really took place on the shop floor of McDonnell Aircraft Corporation as it built the F-4 fighter.

Roger Bilstein, retired from the University of Houston-Clear Lake, pulls back the curtain on this process in "The Enterprise of Flight" and offers an outstanding overview of a whole industry. He traces its rise from the first companies that designed and built canvas and wooden biplanes in the first part of the twentieth century to the behemoths that dominate the industry at the beginning of the twenty-first century. All the household corporate names in the community are discussed--Boeing, North American, Consolidated, McDonnell, Douglas, Martin, Curtis, Wright--as well as the tycoons that made this industry arise in the United States.

Bilstein also traces the many entrances and exits, mergers and corporate takeovers that have changed the landscape of the industry since the Wrights first flew on the beach at Kitty Hawk in December 1903.

Taking center stage in this synthesis, which is by far the best overview available on the subject, are the twin events of World War II and the Cold War. Both energized the industry as nothing has before or since. The United States military realized early on that while air power did not assure victory, its absence could assure defeat. Accordingly, government investment in the technology of flight has been both significant and persistent. Bilstein does an excellent job telling this story with grace and insight.

This paperback is a reprint of Bilstein's "The American Aerospace Industry: From Workshop to Global Enterprise," published by Twayne Publishers in 1996, but now out of print. This reprint edition, as well as the 1996 version, are outstanding and may be read profitably both by scholars and those with a general interest.

Ideas can be creatively recycled.......2002-05-06

Steve Rivkin and Fraser Seitel have written a book that gives you permission to be "creative" by "copying" someone else's ideas. They demonstrate that what may be "new!" and "innovative" in one field can be a tried and true, accepted principle or application in another field. They point out, with great examples drawn from a variety of industries, how "revolutionary" ideas have been, and continue to be, actually "borrowed" from unrelated areas. They demonstrate with numerous examples how the success of the adapted application can surpass the success of the original application. This is not a new concept in some fields; that the synthesis of ideas or perspectives from two different disciplines can lead to some higher concept or value in a third may be well known and taken for granted in some fields, but never applied in so practical and enjoyable a manner as in this book. In a sense, they have "borrowed" and applied dialectics to marketing.

Written in a very practical, irreverent and humorous style, Rivkin and Seitel provide the reader with very practical advice about how to generate more and better ideas by increasing your awareness of the world around you. The actually provide step-by-step guidance on things that will work and specific principles that have to be followed to be successful. They led me to a different way of thinking about things, and for the first time in my 50-some years I am actually carrying around a notepad on which to jot down observations that will at some time find their way into my idea-making. I have read many of Rivkin's earlier contributions, and those authored by Trout and Ries, but this is the best-developed and most useful how-to book with which Rivkin has been associated so far. And they picked "Ideas", the topic on which business and cultural growth is rooted. Who can't use this help?

This book has changed my life. I train product managers and have hired expensive consultants --- until I read this book. Now I know the truth. And boy have I learned my lesson. The only "consultants" I'll ever hire again are Rivkin and Seitel!

If it is possible to reach an environmental agreement among only a small number of countries, how should environmental policies by the parties to the agreement be designed to reduce the extent to which reductions in pollution by the signatories are offset by increases in emissions by non-signatory countries? 3. When a country increases the stringency of its environmental policies, are the impacts on trade and welfare larger when account is taken of scale economies and imperfect competition in international markets than was thought to be the case from earlier studies based on the assumption of competitive markets for international trade? 4. Do national governments have incentives to distort their environmental policies to gain strategic advantage, and if so, what form might this take and what does this imply about the sovereignty of nations in choosing environmental policies? Employing both theoretical analysis and empirical modelling, "Environmental Policy, International Agreements, and International Trade" aims to advance understanding of some of the key issues surrounding the links between trade and the environment.
