Book Description
Communities across Borders examines the many ways in which national, ethnic or religious groups, professions, businesses and cultures are becoming increasingly tangled together. This is as a result of hte vast flows of people, meanings, good and money which now migrate between countries and world regions. Now the effectiveness and significance of electronic technologies for inter-personal communication (including cyber-communities and the interconnectedness of the global world economy) simultaneously empowers even the poorest people to forge effective cultures stretching national borders, and compels many to do so to escape injustice and deprivation.
Book Description
Central bankers play a prominent role in many societies; a few of them even become oracles or celebrities. Yet they are not paid much heed - commonly accorded little respect - as educators and intellectual leaders. This volume hopes to change that. For the world's best central bankers, portrayed here, teach and lead impressively, doing so with insight, courage, quality, and conviction. They are commendable role models for those with high aspirations.
The growing reputation of central bankers suggests that there is much to be learned from examining the ways in which they practice their profession. So the authors proceeded to ask what are arguably the world's seven best central bankers, from various countries throughout the world, for documentation on what they considered to be their finest achievements and how they went about gaining support for policies designed to maintain price stability. They obtained excellent cooperation from John Crow of Canada, Roberto Zahler of Chile, Alan Greenspan of the United States, Helmut Schlesinger of Germany, Markus Lusser of Switzerland, Donald Brash of New Zealand and Yasushi Mieno of Japan.
They offer here a series of essays in which they present what central bankers have to say for themselves and the lessons they believe they can teach about monetary policy - not what economists, politicians, or journalists like to say about them. Learning from gifted practitioners is common in many fields where personal skills and the quality of judgment and execution matter so critically. It is particularly important in fields such as central banking where gaining political support, maintaining independence, and establishing credibility often make the difference between success and failure.
In this volume, we find a fascinating treatment of how the governors have tackled the hardest dilemmas of policy-making in their own specific political settings. We learn how the bankers themselves believe they have earned and preserved credibility and how they have maintained and expanded their base of support. We read, partly in their own words, how they have attempted to inspire trust and have secured and defended the independence of their institutions. We read how they have tried to cope with regulatory failures, unstable surges of capital flows, extremes in asset valuations, and financial crisis. Perhaps one of the most interesting lessons we learn is that central bankers must refuse to accept credit for fortuitous successes, like favorable supply shocks, lest they be blamed and lose credibility when things beyond their control go wrong.
As Professor Malkiel concludes in his Foreword, the essays in this volume can be of enormous value to academic economists, students, and especially future leaders in banking, finance, and government service. No study of monetary theory and policy will want to miss this fascinating work where the world's most gifted central bankers speak so eloquently about their trade.

comments on Learning from the World's Best Central Bankers.......1999-05-05
excerpt from review by Governor John Crow:
"(The authors) have captured the essence of the issues confronting (central bankers) and there's enough variety of circumstance and treatment to propel the topic vigorously through the seven chapters
I've read a number of books about central banking written in recent years. Unlike those books, (this Work) deals with the real questions the policy-maker faces - in a way that a textbook cannot match."

This book really helped me build on what I already knew in order to get a handle on ebXML. The author does a great job of showing how ebXML builds on XML standards, and also how ebXML relates to Web Services, which I'm just starting to get a handle on. It provides good technical detail on the ebXML architecture, and gives lots of business case examples and reasonable guidelines for developing a strategy for staging implementation of ebXML. Coverage of security and the other major specs is very complete and readable--I highly recommend this book!

Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners and not for professionals.......2007-05-03
It is hard to tell who this book is geared towards. A novice should not take on any event that is as over their head; as most of the event situations that are listed in the book are. A professional would know from experience the answers to most of the questions or they would have the common sense to take care of any odd situation that arose. The book may be helpful to assistant managers or banquet captains, but most houses have their own way of doing things. Interesting read and a good refresher, buy used.
Very useful Hand Book.......2007-03-10
It was very useful to me as I used it to brak into the wedding/event business. It presents a very corporate approach, yet it seems to uncover all kinds of secrets of the event world that are hidden to the public eye.
This Book is Alright.......2006-08-09
Being an avid reader of Event Planning literature, I must say that this book is alright.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2005-10-14
Details, details, details. That's really what successful event planning is all about, and that's the key to this very successful event-planning manual. Author Judy Allen notes, lists, copes with and gives an example of virtually every detail in planning anything from a sedate corporate event in a major city to a huge celebration on a remote island. She provides examples galore plus tips, questions and answers, sample cost sheets and schedules. How much floor space does a person need to be comfortable in a tent? Answer: 20 square feet. How many bathrooms should be available for a party? Answer: One per 75 guests. And don't forget to ask about the stemware, adequate parking and even the photographer's back-up camera battery. This author seems to have thought every contingency, as the book's ambitious title promises. Her one glaring omission is that she does not include the party planner's fee - our guess is that she'd be worth it. We highly recommend this well-organized, very practical book to all event planners. Don't send out press releases for your party without consulting Judy Allen.
Great book.......2005-10-01
This is a great book for anyone interested in working in the event planning field.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for all Levels of Event Planners.......2007-07-05
This book is a fount of knowledge. Its simple to read and easy to follow. I thought it would be a person spouting about how great they are and not alot of practical information. But I was wrong. This book is helpful in many ways: for the beginner it provides a practical guideline to get started; for the intermediate planner it provides further ways to improve what they have begun; and for the advanced planner it hones their skills with the latest ideas and information.
For myself as an advanced even planner, it confirms that I am right on track with the trend for event planning. The CD with the forms and such are very useful and easy to customize for each planner or event.
I have already recommended this book to a large organization to use to train other event planners!
Event Planning made easy.......2007-04-11
This is a great high level overview of event planning. I am still looking for a reference with more detailed checklists and events of a more civic nature. But it was great to get the accompanying CD to use to start making your own checklists. And a great way to see all the possible areas that could be involved with planning events, especially large ones.
Very informative.......2007-04-09
Having to plan an event? First time or old pros needing a refresher go no further than this book. Shannon Kilkenny has outdone herself here with step by step instructions and tips to walk you through the whole process of planning and executing even the most difficult event you've ever faced. I found the charts, lists and forms both in the text and the copies on the CD ROM for easy print out to be the most beneficial.
I think the best thing about this book is that you can take away something from reading the whole book cover to cover. But you can also take away information from individual chapters if the whole book doesn't apply to you. The best example of this I can give is that my mother was panicked last week over trying to plan my little sister's 16th birthday. I told mom that while I'd only read this book last week for a friends baby shower that I thought she might want to take a peek at it. When I came over the day before my sister's party to help with setup my mom said that the book had more than paid for itself. It had shown her a much less stressful way to do what she was trying to do. She said that she skipped the chapters aimed at event planners but that a lot of the later chapters helped her immensely in avoiding disaster or over planning for the party. This is a definite read for anyone trying to plan an event from the smallest birthday party to a large banquet or conference.
If you want the depth, Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning is the item of choice........2007-04-07
If a reference to planning events is needed you can't do better than Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning, a pick for planners and public libraries alike. Here's all the basics for planning all kinds of events, from seminars, receptions, weddings, dances, reunions and retreats. From money-saving tips and identifying and reaching target markets to choosing dates and designing events, it covers all aspects from budget to set-up and beyond. A few other guides cover this topic lightly - if you want the depth, Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning is the item of choice.
An Inspirational Guide To Success! .......2007-03-26
I've planned successful corporate Christmas parties, software user group conferences, non-profit fundraisers, weddings, church gatherings, and awards banquets but I found new ways to enhance my services and make the processes flow more smoothly when I read "The Complete Guide to Successful Event Planning".
Shannon Kilkenny provides comprehensive planning guidelines in a way that stimulates further brainstorming and creativity. She teaches you how to easily and systematically envision, create and run a fantastic event that will be memorable for all of the participants, enjoyable for the planner, and profitable when appropriate.
I particularly liked her advice on "greening" your event. Providing organic meals and other environmentally friendly offerings sends a positive message to participants, the community and potential clients. People want to hire event planners who are responsible people. What better way to demonstrate and promote your services than to host an event that is appealing, well-run and certified as environmentally sound?
This book does an excellent job of guiding you through the process of planning a successful event and is a must have for anyone who may be called upon to coordinate a gathering.

This book is a clear, concise guide to organizing personal and financial affairs so those responsible will be able to handle all the necessary details following a death with ease. GOT PARENTS? -You should have this book.......2003-08-02
This book was of tremendous help when we had a series of deaths of family members. Important things you need to know about bank accounts, taxes, etc. You name it; it's in here.
If the death of a loved one is a new experience for you...........2003-02-01
Scott offers very practical, concise and organized guidebook which I wish I had from day 1...This book focuses on necessary and predictible situations: what needs to be done, when it should be done and who should do it. It defines the terminology simply. The writing is clear and comprehensible. This book is so important for someone newly experiencing the operational side of death, that I purchased multiple copies for my fellow mourners.
Excellent, Simple Overview.......2000-04-04
This book is both simple and practical. When someone close to you dies, worrying about all the details of what to do next can be overwhelming. Many people are too distraught to deal with potentially complex legal and financial issues. This book provides an easy step-by-step approach to the whole process, and doesn't overwhelm the reader with too much detail.
