    Book Description

Standard economic models assume that many small investors own firms. This is so in most large U.S. firms, but wealthy individuals or families generally hold controlling blocks in smaller U.S. firms and in all firms in most other countries. Given this, the lack of theoretical and empirical work on tightly held firms is surprising.

What corporate governance problems arise in tightly held firms? How do these differ from corporate governance problems in widely held firms? How do control blocks arise and how are they maintained? How does concentrated ownership affect economic growth? How should we regulate tightly held firms?
Drawing together leading scholars from law, economics, and finance, this volume examines the economic and legal issues of concentrated ownership and their impact on a shifting global economy.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book to see if your salary keeps up with inflation.......1998-09-13

Excellent statistical narrative that will allow you to gauge your home appreciation or weekly salary wrt the consumer price index. The results can be quite fascinating. For instance the 35 cent a gallon gasoline in 1973 should be 1.35 today. Or a 15,000 home in 1960 should be 87,000 today. For those penny pinchers like myself who are always trying to second guess the platitudes of our company pay raise proposals, this book will allow you to keep em straight. The primary shortcoming with this book though is that it ends in 1991. A revision really does need to be published yearly or otherwise each additional year after 1991 most be interpolated individually. Mr McCusker please update next year.

              Book Description

This book sets out, in straightforward, accessible terms, crucial aspects of monetary economics. It opens with an exposition of the fundamental question of what money is and what it does. Distinguished contributors then examine the key role of price stability and how to achieve it. Core issues addressed include:-
-- an examination of the long run effect of money on prices
-- an analysis of the complex and variable relationship between money and fluctuations in the real economy
-- an investigation of inflation and its dangerous consequences
-- an analysis of the effect of regulation on the stability of financial systems in developed and developing countries
-- the relationship between the money supply regime and economic performance
-- the effect of monetary fluctuations on the interest rate
-- the choice of targets for monetary policy

This book will be extremely useful to practicing economists, students and scholars of financial and monetary economics.

                Description:
There is a great deal of support for nominal income targeting in the literature on strategies for monetary policy in a closed economy framework. Is nominal income targeting equally attractive in a small open economy? This paper compares nominal income targeting to alternative monetary policy rules in a stochastic macro model for a small open economy. We find that both the weighting in the overall price level of the exchange rate and foreign prices and the elasticity of output supplied with respect to the real exchange rate are important factors in assessing the attractiveness of nominal income targeting. In a small open economy where the size of both parameters is not negligible, a rule targeting the overall price level may actually be preferred to nominal income targeting.

4 out of 5 stars Great for beginners.......2003-08-05

This book is a great starter book on information security! I was wading though my copy grumbling "I know this, this, this...", when it occurred to me that I am not the intended audience.

For some time, one of my friends was asking me for a good book on security for somebody who knows absolutely nothing about it. I gave him "Access Denied" - and now he is hooked. Several weeks has passed by and he is already asking for "Hacking Exposed"...

"Access Denied" covers a wide range of security-related topics. The book is well written, logically organized and have everything to appeal to the beginners in the security field, those curious about modern (if not cutting edge) security topics and those migrating to security from other IT fields.

Anton Chuvakin, Ph.D., GCIA, GCIH is a Senior Security Analyst with a major information security company. His areas of infosec expertise include intrusion detection, UNIX security, forensics, honeypots, etc. In his spare time, he maintains his security portal info-secure.org

5 out of 5 stars Key points in plain English.......2002-05-18

I really enjoyed this book. It was straight forward, to the point and provided some great best practices as solutions to some common security problems. A major problem with security is management. Too often the people making the important decisions do not understand the information that they are given.

As the authors point out, Managers and technical staff speak different languages and that is the key problem here. Managers that read this book will gain a clear understanding of the problems that the IT staff faces, and IT people that read this book will understand the management side and will know how to speak to non-technical staff.

This book is a perfect introduction to security and related business concerns.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview, a lot of food for thought.......2002-05-09

This is a really good introduction to security for non-technical and IT personnel. It covers a lot of subject matter including disaster planning, and writing a security policy. This book is an excellent resource for managers who need a clue. It is written better, more organized and more helpful than "Secrets and Lies" and other similar books. I recommend this book for anyone that needs a good overview of security. You may not be a CISSP after you finish it but you will understand what a CISSP is saying.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview and introduction.......2002-05-07

This book is a great overview of security and policy development. This is not a technical book, it does not teach you the specifics of any particular OS, or how to configure software. It does ask key questions, and gets you thinking about security programs and business practices. The policy template is an added bonus. I gave this book to my manager to help convince her that we needed to look at security differently and budget for it.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great introduction.......2001-12-30

This book is a great introduction to security concepts and procedures. I've used it as a resource for college papers and I have used the templates to start a security policy. I recommend it to anyone that needs a well written primer on security.

I am an integral coach who does a lot of work with career changers who are looking to align their career with their most important values in a fulfilling way. I also do career counseling work with young people who are confused about their future direction.

A shortcoming I find to most approaches to looking at career are that ignore a lot of the interior right hemisphere work and jump the gun in terms of matching a person's skills to the needs of the market. Unfortunately, just because you have a certain skill doesn't mean you will enjoy using it or find fulfillment in a position that draws heavily on areas where you have the highest aptitudes. In order to make the best possible career choices, it is important to look at your values, the skills you most enjoy using and look beyond purely logical approaches to making decisions.

Rick Jarow's Guide to Finding Your Perfect Job uses techniques that help you to get beyond your conditioning and habitual ways of thinking. He utilized meditation techniques and visualizations that help you to get out of our own way and get at the areas that have the most meaningful to you. Armed with this knowledge, you can make much more effective career choices and see through the things that are blocking you from having the job you want.

Honestly, I don't like some of Rick Jarow's other more comprehensive works nearly as much as this concise tape. However, if you like this you may want to try some of his other resources. In short, this tape will get you out of your head, into your heart and put you in touch with what is most meaningful to you. If you have a strong internal critic, this tape might be particularly helpful.

This is a must read for people in their 20s and 30s, especially those who are married and have children. Most people think Social Security and the company 401K will take care of their retirement. A great many of those people believe if they start saving in their mid-30s they will accumulate enough wealth to retire comfortably. This book reinforces the need to begin saving for retirement as soon as you begin working full-time because of the power of compounding and all of the various circumstances like Bar Mitzah's, weddings and other financially draining events. It made me examine my own portfolio and strategy for future financial events. It is a very easy to read and understand book and can be read in a day

How has Microsoft been able to crush its competition every step of the way? The company's own version of history ascribes it to something like "really great technical innovation." Barbarians Led by Bill Gates presents a harsher and messier history, sharply questioning Microsoft's ethics and corporate wisdom while underscoring its fierce will to compete.

The authors present a history of Microsoft from the early '80s to the present, covering the big projects, both successes and failures, that defined the company's direction. It's a difficult story to tell, filled with complex technology and a large cast of characters who are rarely in the public eye.

Perhaps the most surprising thing to emerge is how many Microsoft ventures were mismanaged and how many opportunities were missed. The best-known of these is Microsoft's near-catastrophic failure to see the arrival and success of the Internet. The book also details the unplanned success of Windows 3.0, the demise of Pen Windows (which annihilated GO Corp. and its promising Penpoint operating system but little else), and the compromised design and slow success of Windows 95. A final chapter tackles the Netscape-Microsoft Web-browser war and Microsoft's head-on collision with the Justice Department.

Both authors are, in different ways, Microsoft insiders. Jennifer Edstrom is the daughter of Pam Edstrom, Gates's long-time PR chief and spin doctor. Marlin Eller is a 13-year veteran Microsoft developer who has worked on DOS, early versions of Windows, and pen computing. Both stand open to the charge of having an ax to grind, and the reader senses a lot of personal animosity at work. Yet anyone who has followed Microsoft for any length of time will recognize most of the war stories from other sources, and most of the new information presented has the ring, at least, of probability. Indeed, the value of this book is not so much in presenting new information as in marshaling it to paint a portrait of a company that has largely escaped this sort of scrutiny. --Thomas Mace

                                Book Description

Teamed with the daughter of one of Bill Gates's closest associates, thirteen- year Microsoft veteran Marlin Eller illuminates every step along Gates's route to world domination and to Microsoft's current headline-making federal antitrust case, making all that's been written before seem like a rough guess. Revealing the smoke-and- mirror deals, the launching of products that didn't exist, and the boneyard of once-thriving competitors targeted by the Gates juggernaut, this book demonstrates with often hilariously damning detail the Microsoft muddle that passes for strategic direction, offset by Gates's uncanny ability to come from behind to crush whoever is winning. Edstrom and Eller's unrivaled access to key players and their ability to get them to tell the real story makes for a rollicking roller-coaster ride of narrative journalism.

As others have pointed out this first person/third person thing is quite hilarious. After about the second or third time you come across this "Eller" fellow who seems to be always on the scene and always right, you look back and see his name on the cover. But the funnier one is every now and then you can almost hear Jennifer Edstrom saying "and then mommy saved the day again ..."

However I did give it more than the minimum, because I do think there is value in getting a perspective from what it looked like from the front line. I did finish the book, and I think I got some insight into Microsoft.

An insider's account of the development of windows and related events, Barbarians is excellent reading. It explodes the right wing fetish about the genius of Bill Gates, and nullifies the equally baseless conservative notion that huge bureaucratic enterprises are efficient, as long as they are private. It is also quite revealing of the dangers of allowing the monopolistic practices of any business to remain unchallenged. The thuggish tactics of Microsoft, from it's days as a IBM toady to it's genesis as Corporate bully number one, coupled with the mindless greed, the idea theft and the thick headed stupidity of the Microsoft upper management reveal the true nature of the corporate capitalist state. Worse for Chairman Bill, the book cannot be dismissed as the sour grapes ranting of unhappy competitors since Eller made millions as a Microsoft software developer and Edstrom is the daughter of one of MS' chief PR goons. Barbarians should be read by fans and foes of Microsoft alike, if for no other reason than to witness the alienation and frustration of all corporate employees, even those that are millionaires. Death to the corporate state.

The book was a well written account, some other titles which may be of interest are; 'hackers' by Steven Levy, 'Fire in the Valley: The making of the Personal Computer', 'Pirates of Silicon Valley' (movie). Reading/viewing these titles before 'Barbarians Led by Bill Gates' will provide a good chronology.

Although it may not be as in-depth as some other readers may expect, it does paint a vivid picture of what is going on in MS. In fact, it is very creditible. I am a programmer on Window platform and have witnessed their lack of direction. Bill has strong influence over the market. That's. Anyone given billions of dollar can roll out beautiful software. This book let's me see through form another side of the window.
