    Book Description

In this new book, Ulrich Beck develops his now widely used concepts of second modernity, risk society and reflexive sociology into a radical new sociological analysis of the cosmopolitan implications of globalization. Beck draws extensively on empirical and theoretical analyses of such phenomena as migration, war and terror, as well as a range of literary and historical works, to weave a rich discursive web in which analytical, critical, and methodological themes intertwine effortlessly. Contrasting a 'cosmopolitan outlook' sharpened by awareness of the transformative and transgressive impacts of globalization with the 'national outlook' neurotically fixated on the familiar reference-points of a world of nation-states - borders, sovereignty, exclusive identities - Beck shows how even opponents of globalization and cosmopolitanism are trapped by the logic of reflexive modernization into promoting the very processes they are opposing. A persistent theme running through Beck's account is his attempt to recover an authentically European tradition of cosmopolitan openness to otherness and tolerance of difference. He suggests that what Europe needs is the courage to unite forms of life which have grown out of language, skin colour, nationality or religion with an awareness that, in a radically insecure world, all are equal and everyone is different.

      Book Description

In the United States alone, more than four million small businesses are expected to get online with a Web site in the next four years. But small businesses and home-based businesses often find it unnecessarily daunting to get an e-commerce site up and running. E-COMMERCE SOLUTIONS WITH MICROSOFT FRONTPAGE VERSION 2002 and the Microsoft FrontPage version 2002 Web site creation and management tool work together to meet this all-too-common challenge. This book focuses on FrontPage version 2002 features that are specifically geared to the needs of the small or home-based business that is trying to set up a credible e-commerce site. FrontPage Version 2002 gives businesses like these the tools they need to create valuable e-commerce site features such as feedback forms, a workable customer-support infrastructure, and a visitor registration and tracking system. This book shows how best to use these tools-including the latest FrontPage features-to create an approachable, professional-quality e-commerce solution. The book also shows how easy it is to use FrontPage Version 2002 in concert with other Office XP software applications, third-party applications, and business-advice sites such as the Microsoft bCentral(tm) small business portal to create an elegant, accessible e-commerce site.

1 out of 5 stars A better name for this book is: Everything about bCentral.......2002-05-16

DO NOT purchase this book if you are like me and looking for a honest and open step-by-step books to create or better understand components of an e-commerce site built using FP2002. As I look around my room I can see dozens (well over 100) computer books, many of which I received from Amazon because they are the best. Not one of them is anywhere as close to bad as this one is! It is COMPLETELY written for someone setting up a bCentral site (which is not for free and is EXTREMELY limited to say the least). I have other books from Microsoft Press but this one should of been for free because it is a sales promotion device, NOT a ecommerce instruction books as they suggest with their hype. For situations like this it would be nice if Amazon would look into outright con's such as this and stop it.

2 out of 5 stars Self promotion for Microsoft's bCentral.......2001-12-11

This book mostly deals with the different services offered through Microsoft's very own bCentral e-commerce solution web site. It is best used by die-hard Microsoft fans who intend on utilizing the bCentral system.

        Book Description

This book takes a broad look at how to use incentives, ranging from stock options to cash bonuses to gainsharing, to motivate and reward employees in dynamic companies that seek to create a more productive "ownership" culture. Using both technical discussions and case studies, it explores incentives both as self-sufficient tools and as complements to retirement-oriented plans such as employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs). Specific topics covered by individual chapters include stock incentives in entrepreneurial growth companies, how incentives fit into the "Great Game of Business," communicating short-term incentives to employees, performance-based stock options, gainsharing and the Scanlon plan, the incentive programs at employee-owned Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), how to correctly design a cash incentive program, and more.

"Powerful Presentations that Inform, Inspire, and Persuade" is the subtitle of this book and when used will be a sure recipe for your success as a public speaker. Straightforward and easy to read Ms Booher has developed tips for improving your communication and speaking skills in a logical, topical approach that takes you from your research, and establishing a rapport with your audience, through the latest advances in technical communications.

I especially enjoyed the pithy quotes introducing the subject to be covered in each new chapter.

The layout of the book, with the numbered tips and white space on each page, encourages the reader to reflect briefly on the thought just expressed before moving on to the next important tip.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide to Public Speaking.......2006-02-28

Dianna Booher's Speak with Confidence is a complete guide to the basics of public speaking. She offers 497 practical tips that public speaking beginners use to overcoming their biggest fear. The author begins by addressing the most critical factor in a speaker's success-establishing likeability and credibility. The book also includes discussions related to organizing a presentation, practicing the presentation, using visual aids, and handling questions with authority.

Tip 400 is a very complete checklist for facilities and audio visual equipment. This tool is an example of the practical nature of this book. I was amused by the responses Booher provides to challenging situations. For example, she suggests that when a cell phone rings during the presentation, the presenter might want to respond humorously with a quip such as, "If that's the President (or CEO), tell him I don't have time to answer his questions or right now." Or when the microphone makes noise, come back with, "That was exactly what I said to my ex last week." Cute, but they'd have to be used at the right time with the right audience.

Overall, this is a good basic tool to help guide the skill development of someone who is new to public speaking.

5 out of 5 stars Great Support for Speakers.......2006-02-24

Dianna Booher has made her book "Speak with Confidence" a very valuable resource for speakers. She offers a wealth of information and answered my questions before I even knew which ones to ask. This will be a book I refer to often as I prepare my speeches. It's very practical and full of details. I highly recommend it for everyone.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good, practical advice, but see below.......2005-07-31

The back cover of the book touts Smye as an important "thought leader," whatever that is, but it sounded impressive, so I had high expectations for this book.

After reading the book, however, I found most of the advice is basically common sense. Anyone who has spent five years or more in the corporate world will already know much or most of it, but there is some value in bringing this sort of practical information under one cover. Perhaps I would have found it more impressive if I hadn't been expecting so much. Still, there is much good advice here and Smye's style is quite readable and certainly not dry or boring.

The book's message, however, is pretty basic and hard to argue with: change is inevitable, so you either get in sync or learn to adapt to it or get run over. And if you can follow your own mantra and opt out of the corporation, even better. That I can certainly agree with. However, I also appreciate the fact that most people, as in the example of the book, can't became a Yoga instructor and sacrifice the better paying corporate job to do that.

I wanted to say one more thing about American business's fascination with continuous change. Of course, the goal of change is "improvement." It is difficult to disagree with this idea in theory. And I agree with Smye that people need books and info like this in order to better deal with change. However, to my mind, that's not the main problem.

Especially in the corporate world, there is too much change just for the sake of change that is not particularly well thought out or original and therefore not likely to produce anything positive in the way of results. Or, the changes are based on a good idea that had real potential but the execution is so poor that it has little effect or ends up causing more harm than good. There are even times it is obvious to everybody (except management) that the new changes are completely wrong-headed but get executed anyway, and then they're surprised when they have a disaster on their hands.

That having been said, given that changes are quickly and inexorably coming your way, Smye's book contains, as I said, much good advice on how to deal with change that most people will find helpful.

Finally, and not to sound too cynical about it, but it's just the reality of the situation--management loves it when employees really get behind the new, proposed changes--so you can probably win points that way with your boss if you do. Again, at the risk of sounding too Machiavellian, you do have a choice in terms of how you handle change that will put you in management's good graces or not--and may even influence your future career or not--irrespective of the validity of the changes themselves.

The principle lesson here is that it is better to be an agent for change rather than just remaining passive and having it forced on you anyway. The choice is up to you.

4 out of 5 stars "Running away" is only a metaphor.......2004-01-09

The people who think Smye is encouraging people to "run away" and ignore problems apparently didn't read much more than the title of the book. It's a metaphor, and in fact to be able to "run away" from something that is affecting you requires being able to recognize what that thing is in the first place. That is Smye's first message in this book. The second is how to accomplish that. Just "toughing it out" in the face of evidence that things aren't right isn't always the best solution. Sometimes leaving things behind is the right choice... and the hardest choice you'll ever make. This is true even if the changes might seem superficial at first glance.

As someone who is currently in the midst of a drastic career change, Syme's book is one of several that I've found helpful. Not all of it is great, and Smye's somewhat brusque and occasionally sarcastic tone might put some people off. But there is enough substance that most folks seriously considering a big change will find food for thought. Don't expect one book to change your life -- that part is still up to you! But Smye might give you some insight into what's eating you, and some ideas and tools to help you figure out how to fix things... even if you don't want to become a clown or a trapeze artist.

3 out of 5 stars Good info, but could be shorter.......2003-12-30

I think the author presents an intersting theory about managing midlife career changes.
She asks the reader to think of themselves as a small business and she then maps out her theory of how a person can sucessfully run away to the "circus". She does so by using an organizational approach to managing change. 1)The organization as a whole 2)Groups and 3) the individual. All of these "rings" need to facilitate the change so the transition can set in. Each of these is then divided up into 3 subcategories for a more individual, internal approach to making a change. This is where it gets dense and I do think some of chapters could be pared down.
I don't think the author is encouraging people to "run away" she is asking the reader to confront your environment. Sometimes it is not you, it is your environment. She is encouraging the reader to dream, evaluate, design and find your new "circus" before one is assigned to you.

1 out of 5 stars Just Run Away From Your Problems.......2002-08-24

This book is poorly written for the immature, those unable to commit or take responsibility for their lives. Rather than work on a relationship or issue, according to Smye, just run away..leave your job, your family and all responsibilities and drop your self into a different place...and when that gets tough, just do it again, and again. When does it stop? When is it time to stop running away from your problems?

Immature, weak in content and message.

            DO NOT recommend!!!

            1 out of 5 stars I didn't like it either.......2002-04-03

Found the book to be encouraging people to run away from the issues that we all deal with on a daily basis. Instead of helping people to pull it together and make their relationships, jobs, family situation, etc better, this book tells you to run away. Wouldn't the world be a chaotic and insane place if we all ran away from our responsibilities and joined a circus.

Also, I can't believe that 6 people even read this dumb book!

Is It Too Late to Run Away and Join the Circus? is a book about reinventing yourself: the necessity of doing so, and how to go about it. It's about recognizing that personal needs change, and that when your current version of life begins to squeeze the soul out of you, there are alternatives.

Smye spent years talking to corporate moguls, but instead of hearing success stories and the pride born of accomplishment, she heard such comments as "another week on the gerbil wheel"--this from a man whose job perks included a Turbo Bentley and use of the company jet. And when she asked people how they felt, she got this reply: "First of all, I want to scream. Then I want to kick someone. Then I'd like a bottle of bourbon and a quiet dark room." And this one: "I'm tired and I've been tired forever and I'm tired of it." And this one: "What do you have to do to be allowed to be in a rage? My kids are allowed to be in a rage sometimes. My wife is allowed to be in a rage sometimes. Why can't I? When do I get my midlife crisis?"

In response to this widespread angst, Smye suggests ways to "organize your work around your satisfaction, serenity, and self-esteem." She discusses job and personal dissatisfaction, and how to recognize the signs. She leads you skillfully through the steps of reflecting on who you once were, who you have become, and what you actually want your life to look like. Along with helpful worksheets, the book includes many case studies illustrating how people became so unhappy, and what they did to remedy their situations. Smye says there's always a chance for a new life, that it's never too late to join the circus. But "you'd better do your planning now," she advises, "because the future is going to happen to you whether you're ready or not." In Circus, Smye takes the shame out of dissatisfaction and the fear out of contemplating a different life. --Stephanie Gold

            Book Description

For everyone who has discovered that the rewards of corporate North America are not enough, here's an inspiring, practical blueprint for change. For many years, corporations have sought Marti Smye's advice on how to transform a company in a rapidly changing world. In conversations with CEOs, managers, employees and executives, she hears increasing rumblings of discontent from all levels. The common theme is: "I'm working more, enjoying it less, and not living the life I had in mind when I joined the workforce". Now Marti Smye shows all of us who've questioned where we are in our careers how to apply the lessons of corporate change to the task of personal change. By thinking of yourself as the CEO of a company with one employee - you - you can use the techniques of change management to find the fulfillment you thought was unobtainable. Filled with inspiring stories of those who have found happiness by following their dreams, concrete step-by-step advice, and a wealth of change theory adapted for the individual, Is It Too Late to Run Away and Join the Circus? provides a smart, savvy, practical and motivating program for personal and career change.

            2 out of 5 stars Am I Bozo?.......2002-11-19

Pardon me while I trip over my big shoes... Run, the tiger just got loose!

Ok, I'm sorry. I'm pretty lousy at circus metaphors. Heck, I'm not the metaphoric type, which is why I'm gathing I didn't find this book to be of much use to me. Or maybe it's because I really am looking for a major change in my life and some real PRACTICAL advice on how to switch careers.

I'm also looking to work in the public or non-profit/NGO sector, which is possibly another reason why this book wasn't particularly useful. Much of the text consists of seeing how you, your personality, and your "being" fits into a corporate organization. To this end, the book is filled with mumbo-jumbo corporatespeak combined with crazy circus metaphors (Jumbo the Chief Elephant Officer). Basically, you have a crash course in crazy organizational behavior theories combined with advice on how you should know how to apply greasepaint. And it's practically incomprehensible-- Smye's background as a management consultant is especially evident here.

I love a good metaphor, actually. When used properly, a metaphor can uplift your understanding to a higher plane, illuminate like a 500 watt halogen torchiere, or like the brilliant light of divine inspiration. Sadly, the metaphors in this book, like my oh-so-lugubrious use of metaphors above, just weigh what small amount of "search advice" there is in the book down like a set of cement overshoes (hey, simile here!). So far (100 pages in), "Zen and the Art of Making a Living," is far more effective at using this literary device (phew!!!)-- it's actually inspiring, instead of heavy and annoying.

What's even more fun is when the interviewees the author quotes sink into metaphor as well: one, for example, spent her entire page and a half comparing her business to the gangs she was a member of in high school. The point was lost in the "gang" silliness. I probably wouldn't have noticed it so much had it not been the only explanation Smye used to make that particular point... I'd tell you what the point was, but honestly, I have no clue.

I thought about doing the exercises in the back of the book to try and clarify what I want out of life a little more, but honestly, they weren't very practical either. I know where I want to go (public policy and teaching political science at the community college level), but what I really need is a little advice on how to get there. Smye didn't assist me with that at all.

One extra star for being a mildly entertaining read...

1 out of 5 stars Another Useless Self Help Book--Same [stuff], Different Title.......2002-07-03

How does this author get away with re-writing the same [stuff] over and again, and just changing the title.

Enough with the quasi-self help. Instead learn how to hold a job, sustain a relationship, make and keep commitments, take responsibility. Very immature and unrealistic. Its obvious that this book is simply the author's attempt to justify an empty and unproductive life.

I agree with the previous review that this book is a must NOT read.

1 out of 5 stars The Run Away and Circus Collection--What a Joke.......2002-06-14

This is a ridiculous book and the title reflects it. Poorly written, elementary and yet another attempt by an incompetent author to write.

A must NOT read. Other than perhaps being theraputic to the author this book offers little.

As circuses are becoming a thing of the past, so should this book, the author should just give it up. Her previous book was a big waste and so is this one. It says nothing but the obvious. Written for clowns

Don't waste your time or money on this one.

Its an embarassment--the Run Away and Circus collection--what a joke. AKA the clown collection

5 out of 5 stars Is It Too Late To Run Away and Join the Circus?.......2001-06-16

Marti Smye, Ph.D. says that "between 1980 and 1995, 4.6 million Americans were downsized, smart-sized, right-sized, merged, purged, dehired, or rationalized out of their jobs," adding that "nothing I've read says it won't happen again." She wrote Is It Too Late To Run Away and Join the Circus? Finding the Life You Really Want, to help people plan for the inevitable changes in their employment status.

Her book, however, has nothing to do with preparing a resume or getting through an interview. It's about group dynamics and how organizations work, and how you, as an individual, can determine where you best fit. Her goal is to help you "get a jump on the trend and start now to organize your work around satisfaction, serenity, and self-esteem. You don't have to be at the mercy of technology, economic decisions made five time zones away, or someone else's manifest destiny." The key is to start planning your future now.

Exercises and quizzes throughout the book help you pinpoint current trends and how they will potentially affect you, what you want to accomplish and how you plan to accomplish it, what motivates you, what discourages you, and your personal history, dreams, and abilities. The bulk of the book teaches you how to be your own consultant and fit your plans, goals, and needs into the appropriate corporate position or self-employment opportunity. She emphasizes that "matching your belief systems is more important than matching your skills."

Leaving no ground uncovered, Smye also shows readers how to apply her principles to their personal relationships.

All readers will find Is It Too Late To Run Away and Join the Circus? helpful, because as Smye says, "change is not an option: it is going to happen to you." Whatever kinds of changes await you, her book has the practical techniques, encouragement, and humor needed to make turn those changes into a satisfying new life.

                Book Description

                Do you . . .

Use money as a bargaining chip in relationships?

Have an obsessive need to pinch pennies or spend way beyond your means?

Keep financial secrets from your spouse or family?

If the answer is "yes" to any of the above questions, you may have Money Trouble!

Written by Thomas C. Manheim, an authority on the emotional relationships between people and money, Money Trouble is the first book that identifies the most common psychological games people play with their finances.

In this thought-provoking work, Mr. Manheim uncovers the underlying emotional issues-or money games-that may be causing you to be late with your payments, suffer credit card debt, fall short in your savings account, and never have enough cash to afford the things you really need and want. He not only offers solutions to "win the games," he offers practical techniques for avoiding getting caught up in them in the future.

                Among the money games covered:

              • The Self-Worth Game-"My money makes me who I am."
              • The Slave Game-"I have to endure this awful job to make money."
              • The Victim Game-"I can't support myself, so I'll find someone who will."

Filled with anecdotes and easy-to-reference charts, Money Trouble is a novel approach to helping you rethink your relationship with money.

                Book Description

In this wide-ranging and original book, John J. Clancy examines the history and current state of corporate America from a new perspective, looking at business not as a matter of economics, marketing, and management, but as a cultural artifact. The Invisible Powers examines language, imagery, values, and deeply held beliefs and the impact they all have in determining the role business plays in society.

                5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......1999-11-17

I read this book 6 years ago and can still outline his major points for you at a party, as I've done several times. Absolutlely phenomenal insight into what drives different organizations. His methodology of analyzing CEO speeches to identify the metaphors that define the rules and systems governing different organizations is insightful and to be replicated as a methodology, apart from the insights discovered from the analysis.
