    I have worked and socialized with many doctors who I thought were well off when it came to retirement savings. When they approached 60 to 65 years old, they couldn't afford to retire and maintain the lifestyle they wanted. How sad! I don't want to end up that way.

Perfect commerce! Retailers turned Agents will compete by creating the value added shopping experience, real and virtual. Manufacturers will compete on the true value of their products. Both will work on a parity basis, in satisfying the shoppers' needs because the economics of the industry will match the realities of the current marketplace. The book provides an economic model that demonstrates how the retailers and manufacturers, who adapt to the Agentry Model, will be more profitable and create long-term shopper loyalty.

    "It's a great time to be in the Grocery business" if you are willing to adapt. The book offers the Agentry Model as one possible future scenario, in which the shopper, the manufacturer and the retailer, all win. The model is based on 9 principles, the most important of which is the matching of revenues with true shopper value created. This alone will eliminate the huge "false economics", which currently make the supermarket industry so open to attack by outsiders. Hopefully the book will start a movement that develops the "marketing productivity" business model, in place of continually trying to fine-tune the logistics productivity model of yesterday and today.

    This book sums of the core of what the web can bring to online grocery sales. As the Co-founder of an internet food retailer, NetGrocer, I made all the team read and study the book. If the grocery industry read this book 10 years ago, Wal-Mart would not be the largest grocer in the country today.

    Easy to read and a must for food manufacturers, retailers, and students of the industry. This is one of those rare business books that really creates a new paradigm for a mature industry.

    The grocery business is a $480 billion dollar industry that has lost sight of the consumer. With the expansion of the internet, consumer focused business models are rapidly gaining momentum and growing expotentially.

    This book will open your eyes to what is wrong, why it is wrong, and offers ideas on what it will take to fix the grocery business.

    Glen's style of using cartoons to illustrate key points works well. It is clear that his years of involvement in the food industry has given him a perspective that is accurate and has crediblility.

    The Internet is changing virtually every business model in existence today. Nowhere is the need to for change more apparent than in the food industry. The old ways of doing of business WILL be changed by this technology. Those who embrace it stand the best chance of survival, and even success. Glen Terbeek really helps take the blinders off and opens us up to a new way of thinking. You may not agree with everything he says, but I guarantee that it will make you think. You may or may not want to use this book as a roadmap to change, but you certainly should use it as a catalyst for change. Get outside the box and enjoy. I highly recommend it!

    I have read a lot on the effect of ecommerce on the grocery business, but Glen's book takes an even higher level view. He explores the entire supply chain, not just operations, but also marketing. I work for a major grocery retailer and I recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of our industry and what lies ahead. Glen takes an historical approach that really lays the foundation for understanding a possible future state for our industry. While some of his conclusions can be characterized as somewhat radical, the underlying principles that lead him there are very thought provoking.

      Frankly, this book is barely worth the paper it's printed on. It's full of "social climbing" truisms that should be obvious to anyone with a pulse. Very little of the book is actually devoted to first impressions, which is what the title suggests.

      The only remotely useful part of the book is a couple pages describing the relationships between economic advancement and social advancement. Don't waste your time.

      Anyone looking for a job needs to prepare beyond typing up a resume. Read this book. It helps you to see yourself as others see you. Run through the checklist for grooming, presentation and body language to tune up your "impression makers."
      The boss is looking for someone with energy, enthusiasm, job skills, and who fits with the current team. Far too many candidates have no idea of the image they project. Slumped in a chair while mumbling answers is not likely to impress an employer.

      Although at first blush it would seem that this book is about how to find a New Better and Fantastic Job it is really about how to align your personal passions with a way to make a living. The authors have spent the last 18 years helping people understand the key elements of their lives that they want to be remembered for, an exit interview with God. Since the vast majority of people(over 80%) dislike their jobs this book is an invaluable tool to allow people a methodology to understand what is important in their lives and how to align their careers with what they consider to be the most meaningful. For anyone who takes their lives and careers seriously this book is "must" to be read.

      I like this book because it lives up to the promise of the subtitle, How to find satisfying work in this topsy-turvey world. It tells me precisely what to do, why to do it, and what to watch out for in useful, real life terms to find the job that fits me.

      The book is a fast read - under 175 pages. But it packs a wallop in a tightly knit package. Read it through once, then use it as a guideline to chart your career transition. A generous appendix (35+ pages) is included in that 175 page total. Use the appendices for examples of planning and carrying out the job search, writing cover letters and resumes, developing action plans, organizing data and follow-through, researching industries and companies, interviewing, and doing sample proposals. Of course, there are plenty of "how-to" examples in the body of the text, too. Be sure to check out the skills word sets on pages 39-43.

      Anyone who is still reading the want ads and sending out resumes to find the right job needs this book. Gross and Paskill have a new way to go about job search/career transition that can really make a difference. Even people who already have jobs can use these techniques with their current employer, so you don't have to be unemployed to find these techniques valuable.

      The game plan that Gross and Paskill present makes sense and is very "do-able," something I appreciate because so many books on this subject seem overwhelmingly complex. But I guess 18 years of teaching this process at their CareerMakers training center (according to the Introduction) have forced the authors to figure out what works for real people.

      I was amazed at how valuable the concepts presented in this book are! The authors draw on extensive experience helping people in all variety of careers find and get new jobs. Most impressive was the attention to pursuing your individual calling, the way of making a living that matches your interests, skills, and talents. This is a very readable book and the advice is all very practical. I recommend it highly.

          Japanese Industry in the American South offers a different perspective. Western scholars have emphasized the positive aspects of traditional values and practices for Japanese industry, and haveeven romanticized their effects. Utilizing his bicultural experience, Choong Soon Kim discusses how the American public tends to over-estimate Japanese knowledge about American culture and the Japanese ability to be competitive with their American counterparts. He also talks about the idea many Americans still have that Japanese industrialists are so knowledgeable about the South that they can exploit what are seen as southern characteristics: white, rural, polite and non-union--of people who are supposedly eager to work hard for low wages. Conversely, the numerous concessions, compromises, and accommodations required by the Japanese are exposed and analyzed here. Japanese Industry in the American South reveals a more balanced view of Japan's success as well as struggles to remain competitive in an American setting.

          This book is an excellent introduction and advanced resource for all those that wish to be a marketing research professional (or to those that just want to understand it). The authors present in-depth explanations of the field's theory populated with day-to-day examples.

          I have read it attentively more than once and it was a very useful resource for two courses in my masters: 'Research methods in markets and in organizations' and 'Data Analysis in Marketing'. In both courses, the Professors were really weak, and I learned most of the topics thanks to the book. Some of the themes treated in the book are:

          Part 1: Marketing Research, the Research Process, and Problem definition. Part 2: Determine Research Design. Part 3: Design Data-Collection Method and Forms. Part 4: Sample Design and Data Collection. Part 5: Analysis and Interpretation of Data. Part 6: The Research Report.

          The book fits academic as well as industry readers and the content justifies the price.

          This is the new edition of the book we used in the marketing research course at the Michigan Business School. It was great then and is even better now that they have tightened it up and slimmed it down a bit. It reads clearly, is focused, and doesn't pull any punches about the benefits, tradeoffs, and limitations of the various problems and methods involved in this subject.

          Rather than focusing on decision support systems or marketing information systems, this book is focused on a project based approach. The authors help you recognize a problem, how to formulate it clearly, present it to decision makers for approval, designing the research to be done, data design and collection methods, they offer sample designs which is very helpful. They then do a fabulous job on data analysis and conclude by showing you how to present a proper research report.

          There are several helpful appendices providing statistical values for those calculator based problems, but, really, who doesn't use a spreadsheet or SPSS or some similar package anymore?

          There is also a glossary, a subject index, and an author index.

          This is a standard text on the subject, and it is terrific.

          This is a huge work of marketing research, both in terms of volume and importance. Although intended as a grounding in the foundations of market research, the book takes you further than that. As a result I was using it as a text at post-graduate level.

          The book sets out to explain how to: Formulate your problem. Determine your research design. Design your collection method and forms. Design your sample and collect the data. Analyse and interpret the data. Prepare your research report.

          It is then subdivided into sub sections. I was particularly impressed with the section on ethics, which was so clearly laid out that I used it as a guide when writing a pure ethics paper.

          The book is amply supplied with examples and case studies to illustrate the text and make it useful in a more practical sense.

          All in all a clear, accessible, well laid out and well indexed textbook.

          An excellent work both theory and analysis. Provides an insight about the math requirments for the Marketing Researcher. In certain areas it gives the basic ideas - pp 752,753 - Fig.13.1 Histogram and Frequency Polygon of Incomes of Families in Car Ownership study. The Preface states- this edition, is designed to avoid such extremes by providing the student with a thorough treatment of the important concepts, both simple and complex - This aspect is proved in every section of the book. Really it will help the student to develop their creativie and analytical marketing skills. A very good work.

            This is an excellent book for getting a grip on quantitative market segmentation methods. It is a bit murky in places, but definately is one of the more advanced books on the subject.

            I recommend it, but with reservation for those who are not up to speed in statistical analysis.

                            This book is the only one I know of that has been written in recent times that has looked at Russian business in an objective way. Although the media tends to make judgements about different cultures, this book, as far as I see, is judgement free. One part I loved about the book, is that it starts off with the fact that the old stories of shortages are passé (this pleased me because after I returned from living in Belarus, many people asked me if there was food on the shelves of stores. After a while I started to get annoyed with people for asking me this when I found that shopping in Belarus, the Ukraine, and in Russia was still faster than your ordinary grocery line up in most other countries). For people interested in Russian business, this is an amazing book for learning about the psyche of the Russian consumer and the reasoning behind why Russian business is the way it is. More generally, however, this book has a broader appeal to those that are interested in people around the world. Whereas most books tend to take a stand on issues either for or against, the authors simply describe a situation, and allow readers to draw their own conclusions, which most of the time lead a person with at least an intermediate level of reasoning skills to realize that Russian business practices and ethics are not necessarily better or worse than those in our respective countries, just different, and that in a broader sense, the history of a country plays a very large role in the determination of how business practices are carried out, as well as what is and isn't considered ethical. Another advantage of this book is that it is up-to-date from people in a good position to know. Although I am unaware of Mr. Wilson's profession in St. Petersburg, I knew beforehand that Mr. Donaldson is an editor for the St. Petersburg Press, who has the initial perception of a Westerner, but the experience of a native, which holds a lot more credibility with me than a professor who has read books on the subject, analysed press releases from accross the ocean, etc. to deliver information to the readers. Definitely worth reading!!!
