Book Description

This is a textbook for engineering undergraduates and postgraduate students and a reference for practicing engineers or managers who are familiar with their projects but less familiar with financial/economic analysis methods. The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 covers all the basic concepts and theories and provides the readers with a good understanding of the financial and economic analysis on the feasibility of projects. Plenty of examples are used to illustrate the theories, arguments and calculations. Part 2 consists of case studies on both financial and economic feasibility studies. Readers should be able to conduct their own financial and economic analyses by following the procedures and methodology of the examples given.

In this new edition, the chapters have been revised and expanded with the latest theories and data added, especially the most up-dated information on the development of the theories of internal rate of return and net present worth.

1 out of 5 stars Rather useless.......2004-06-04

There are many other books on the subject that is better written than this one which a practitioner can consult. Those really keen to know the subject would read up more useful texts instead of merely relying on this flimsy book. Not recommended.

      Book Description

Europe is in a period of rapid transition--the Single European Market has been completed and many barriers to the free movement of goods, services, labor and capital have been removed. Based on extensively revised and updated articles from Economics and Business Education, The Economics of the New Europe takes a fresh and up-to-date look at the European economy.

The volume demonstrates how the road to closer economic and monetary integration in Europe is difficult and controversial as many issues remain unresolved. The European Monetary System partially collapsed following speculative attacks on weaker currencies, throwing the timetable for monetary union into disarray. Furthermore, deep recession and the breakdown of communism has reignited nationalism and ethnic tensions in Eastern Europe, casting doubts on hopes of a unified "family of Europe."

Supplemented by a useful statistical appendix describing the community from 1980 to 1994, The Economics of the New Europe provides a thorough examination of the emerging European Union.

          Book Description

This book shows IT professionals and developers that the open source approach can offer flexible, reliable, and secure enterprise solutions. Written by the founders of the Open3.org open source movement, the book provides a roadmap to all critical components of an open source e-business infrastructure. Through detailed coverage of Enterprise Applications (EA), Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) as well as Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Customer (B2C) software, the authors explain how to leverage open source solutions to bring business processes online, integrate disparate applications and databases across the enterprise, and ensure secure, efficient e-business transactions.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good introductory book on open source and ebusiness.......2001-11-21

This book provides a solid introduction to using open source software for ebusiness. The authors have a strong fundamental grasp of what ebusiness is, something that many so-called "ebusiness experts" fail at. They describe ebusiness as 5 interlocking categories: enterprise apps, internal and external integration, and business & consumer e-commerce. They then describe how open source software can be used in these categories.

The book is written for technical types, but really more for managers than developers. I'd like to have seen some code in this book, but nonetheless it did give me a good idea on where to begin looking and using open source software.

The chapters on integration and e-commerce are very good, with lots of details that many programmers would find useful. The authors also seem to have a good grasp of the state of open source and what types of decisions technical folks need to make when evaluating the software.

A good book if you want to find out what this whole open source and linux thing is and how to go about using it for your projects.

1 out of 5 stars Another Resume Book.......2006-08-29

This book is chock full of different resumes like so many others on the market. Be advised that the primary focus of the book is on NOT designing layout and design of resumes, but on how to write or format one based on the many examples. The title is somewhat misleading.

            5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed!.......2003-02-17

Getting back into the job market after nine years at home is exciting, but creating a resume scared me to death. I looked at several books about resume creation, but they either went into too much depth and gave no examples, or were too job-specific for me. I have never even done a resume before, and I had a lot of questions. This book gave tons of examples, showing how each differed and what it emphasized. It gave advice on how to emphasize your strengths and downplay your weaknesses. Ideas for design and fonts were plentiful and practical. I came up with a great resume, but best of all it wasn't a stressful exercise once I found this book. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars Focus on format, not content.......2000-08-02

Unlike most resume books which have many samples in the same format with different information, this book has hundreds of different resumes in a wide variety of formats. It contains a small section on the content of resumes, but the primary focus of the book is on layout and design. Individual chapters are dedicated to placement of names and address information as well as to functional versus chronological resumes. All aspects of the physical appearance of resumes are covered including font and quality and color of paper. One of the most useful sections of the book addresses the issue of making resumes scannable. This book would be more useful to somebody who already has a resume and wants to update the look rather than to a person just beginning to write a resume.

5 out of 5 stars There is a Resume in this Book for Everyone!.......1998-06-13

There really isn't much to be said about this book other than it contains literally hundreds of sample resumes. It is the author's intent to allow readers to select the type of resume that seems right for them. The author expresses the concern that users of this book should express themselves visually by using the layout, wording, font styles, graphics, and even paper styles that reflect their personalities, personal needs, and objectives. Every person is different and so is each resume in this book!

The major drawback of this book is the fact that it is sold without an accompanying CD or diskette that could contain all the sample resumes in the book. This would make custom editing a breeze, saving both time and perhaps money.

Speaking of money, someone could buy this book and go into the resume writing business as a full-time or part-time employment opportunity! Furthermore, this line of business could be taken to the Internet. Many have already done this but there is always room for others to jump in! Consider obtaining a copy of the author's newer book, Resumes in Cyberspace, to make the transition to the Internet smoother. If you need a resume you need these books!

This newly-revised title clearly explains the major changes that have recently been made to the nation's bankruptcy laws. Specific changes will prevent people from eliminating credit card debt and other unsecured loans by filing for bankruptcy under Chapter 7, and forcing them to file under Chapter 13, a court-supervised repayment plan. In addition, while not totally eliminating the homestead exemption, there will be a cap on the amount that can be sheltered in a bankruptcy filing.

This new edition explains in simple language: € What bankruptcy is € How bankruptcy works € How to analyze your finances € What property you can keep € How to deal with creditors

A new glossary, appendix with valuable web site information, state-by-state exemptions and easy-to-use, blank tear-out forms make this book the most current product available.

In 1970, a brilliant engineer left the world's largest computer maker to start a competitor. The engineer's name was Gene Amdahl, and he had been instrumental in developing the IBM 360 - the mainframe that introduced the world to large-scale computing. Amdahl was determined that he would beat Big Blue. In 1970, he recruited a group of engineers and founded Amdahl Corporation. Development began on the first true competition to IBM. The story of Amdahl Corporation is a testament to flexibility. Early on, Amdahl began to guard itself aginst the volatility of its industry and initiated a diversification into communicaitons systems and storage devices. No longer would it manufacture mainframes - instead, Amdahl changed itself into a total solutions provider.

Both Joel's have it right, IMHO. I knew "the other Joel" well during my time at Amdahl (is it only ex-Amdahl employees that buy this book? :-) ) and agree with his assessement, but would add that there was a passing mention of the 580 experience (see page 64, but they certainly didn't call it "near-death"!), the Key Computing Lab venture, and the problems with Joshua/Toro/Sona.

But not in the detail or accuracy that was appropriate. The problem is that the interviews were with engineers who started with the company early and were in upper management positions when things went sour. They weren't in the trenches fixing the problems, and perhaps weren't willing to make painful observations, e.g. that the decision to continue with ECL instead of designing a CMOS machine was short-sighted. (It actually led to higher revenues in the short term because our ECL machines were faster than IBM's CMOS machines, but ours were much more expensive to manufacture, which led to profitability problems.)

I was in the trenches working on the 5995M, and the observation on page 101 that the 5995M suffered from "some technology problems from Fujitsu" is quite an understatement. Details of the problems and their hard won solutions would have been far more interesting than the bland "I knew we would fix it" statements. And make no mistake, all of these issues were the beginning of the end for a great company. In 2000, when this book was written, there was still a company left, but since then it has split further (Amdahl Software became Softek for example) and going to www.amdahl.com now takes you to www.computers.us.fujitsu.com.

Still, I enjoyed reading the book. It has some shortcomings, but if you were part of that experience, as I was, I think you'll be glad you read the book. Whether or not it's worth a hardcover price is another question.

2 out of 5 stars Not much substance; a valentine to Amdahl management.......2000-10-11

For over twenty years, Amdahl Corp was a great place to design and build interesting computers.

This book captures little of what made it great, and ignores or glosses over the joys, the problems, and the challenges that were central to the Amdahl experience as it was lived. Instead, the author gives a lifeless, through-the-gauze-lens account that reads like a compilation of Amdahl PR releases and internal newsletters.

The most glaring omission is the complete absence of any mention of Amdahl's ill-fated "Key Computing" venture -- a $350 million boondoggle that sapped the company's resources at the exact instant that Amdahl faced the make-or-break challenge of precipitously-declining price/performance in the mainframe market.

                Also missing and missed:

                - A recounting of the company's near-death experience with the 580 ("Oslo").

                - Any indication that the company might have successfully continued as a competetive mainframe supplier, if it had made the bipolar-to-CMOS technology transition in step with IBM. The 5990M ("Joshua", later "Sona"), an ECL machine that required elaborate power and cooling arrangements, was much more expensive to manufacture than IBM's competing CMOS machine.

                - Any hint of any downside to the relationship with Fujitsu.

Finally, I was disappointed by the choice of photographs. Amdahl was above all a *community* of outstanding people, and that community is conspicuous by its absence from these pages. The photos chosen for inclusion lean heavily toward the most stiffly-posed of glossy PR shots -- few former employees will go misty-eyed with nostalgia over these shots, because almost none of the people who made the place what it was appear. Every photograph of professional models standing before the newest box seems to me a wasted opportunity to actually tell the story promised in the title.

A telling detail: in the days when Amdahl Corp actually was a computer-industry legend, the company was known by its all-lower-case logo, often represented as

                a m d a h l

The editors chose instead for this book's cover the "new" logo, the one adopted after Fujitsu took over, after everything that a person could love in the organization had died.

There's an Amdahl story that deserves to be told. This book doesn't tell it.

4 out of 5 stars Not a lot of information, but presented very well........2000-09-08

This book is a good overview of the history of Amdahl Corporation. I found the early chapters the most interesting. 30 years ago Gene Amdahl left a big company (IBM) to form a start-up and compete with IBM in one of their strongest businesses. Anyone with an interest in the history of the computer industry will certainly enjoy the first half of the book. Amdahl's idea of making a computer that was software compatible with IBM's was unique at the time. I was somewhat surprised by the number of business principles and technical innovations that can be directly attributed to Gene Amdahl and the early days of Amdahl Corporation. I've worked at Amdahl for 14 years. So, maybe it's the fact that I lived through the events in the second half of the book that made it much less interesting. It's not too bad. But, it doesn't have the historical interest or significance that the first half does. The author interviewed a lot of current and former managers. Some of the stories they tell are good. However, the problems the company suffered are barely touched on. The book makes it seem like the company management was prepared for the changes in the industry instead of clobbered by them. All things considered, I liked the book. I would have liked a little more detail, but it was a pretty easy read and has an extensive list of references in the back. The author did a very good job researching the material and I didn't find any major errors. I also enjoyed the many photographs. Several have historical interest, although a few seem to be there only to shorten the word count. I did notice that one aerial photo was reversed and a picture of a teamserver was mistakenly labeled as a Millennium 830 Mainframe.

                  7 Stars *******

I am a big Faith Popcorn fan. That led me to go into reading this book with high expectations. What a great deal it was to have those expectations well exceeded!

Tom Peters first raised the theme of this book in his book, The Circle of Innovation. The vast bulk of most consumer purchases are either made or strongly influenced by women. Stop marketing generally, and be sure you marketing is gender friendly in the broadest sense. But Tom, as a man, could only take that point so far.

Faith Popcorn has really explained it very well. She has identified 8 key principles:

                  (1) Women link (the marketer's job is to make that easier for women -- witness the success of women-only Web sites)

                  (2) Serve all of a woman's needs, not just the ones she has part of the day (if she needs convenient ordering, be sure to offer everything she wants to buy conveniently -- take-out foods for all meals)

                  (3) Women want their needs anticipated (if she has to tell you what she wants, it's all over -- lots of work, stress, home responsibilities and money mean that home spas are doing well)

                  (4) Use the indirect approach (women prefer to notice things on their own and apply them, rather than getting a direct, hard sell -- women notice institutional appliances in great restaurants and put them into their own kitchens)

                  (5) Go to her and make it easy (witness the success of at-home direct selling)

                  (6) Sell one generation of women, and you get the next as well (see how children now dress like adults at a very young age, because Mom and daughter want to look like each other)

                  (7) Take on a role as a trustworthy adult to help women, and they will link with your brand (GE Financial Assurance provides a mentor role for women entrepreneurs)

                  (8) All the details matter (organic foods are taking off because they are healthier, even though very expensive).

As interesting as these points are, Faith Popcorn also deserves praise for the superb way she explains her ideas. In the beginning of the book, she has one example of each concept. Then there is a chapter on each principle. The chapter has many examples, and finalizes with one thorough one drawn from her consulting experience. Then, to be sure you've got the point, she takes well-known brands in each chapter and points out what they are NOT doing that they should be.

The crowning glory is a chapter on all of the things that Ron Perelman and Revlon are doing wrong, and compares it with how the brand was run originally. Faith couldn't find much of anything she likes about the Revlon approach. As a matter of fact, the company has done poorly.

But, at a broader level, this book is also about marketing in the 21st century. Although the focus of the book is women, those who market to men will often benefit from following the same advice. Saturn, a role model she describes, is not just appealing to women. Men like to be treated like people, too, when they buy a car. As a loyal Saturn owner, I know the approach worked well with me.

I can hardly wait for her next book! Have a great time as marketers begin to apply these principles, providing a better consumer experience for customers and more business success for their companies.

One trend she did not explicitly address are the many consumer goods companies that are converting to having mostly women in product design and marketing. That should help, too.

This is a book that gives some of us dim-witted males an idea as to how females think. Most of the book had me nodding my head and silently saying to myself, "Aha! So that's why my wife does this or that!" The only quibble that I had was on the chapter regarding Revlon. While reading it, I was thinking that perhaps Revlon knows exactly what they are doing. In other words, if Revlon is intent upon capturing the teen female audience, they would market that audience by showing youthful fashion models wearing the product rather than practical soccer moms or average middle-aged women. On the whole, however, I found this a very enjoyable read and look forward to other books by Ms. Popcorn.

                  1 out of 5 stars Well, duh........2001-06-25

This book is - how can one put it politely? - garbage, yes, that's the word. The book has two big messages: that men and women shop differently, and that consumers can buy a particular brand of an item without buying the 'message' that goes with said brand. Well, duh. Hard to believe people get paid for this - and, in the case of Ms Popcorn (real name: Plotkin), paid very well. So don't buy it, it will only encourage her to write something else.

In fact, if you still have any faith in Popcorn, I advise that you cure yourself with a quick look at a book by William Sherden called 'The Fortune Sellers'. Pages 221-224 deal with Popcorn/Plotkin. While you're there, check out what he has to say in other 'futurologists' (read: charlatans) like Toffler and Naisbitt.

                    Book Description

After a decade of financial isolation from world private capital markets following the external debt crisis of the early 1980s, Latin America became an effective magnet for private capital in the 1990s. Two major events, however, altered an otherwise positive picture for this region: the Mexican crisis of 1994-95 and the Asian crisis of 1997. This volume analyzes the return of private capital to Latin America and studies the main policy options available to economic authorities under these new circumstances.
Part 1 is dedicated to the study of capital account restrictions and the role of economic fundamentals. A theoretical chapter develops a model to determine whether a liberalization of capital outflows effectively promotes outflows or is more likely to attract inflows. Others empirically analyze the effectiveness of capital controls in Chile, and the role of economic fundamentals in the determination of capital inflows to Chile, Latin America, and developing countries overall.
Part 2 contains country studies of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and Mexico. Written by national economists of each country who have lived through the inflow and outflow episodes and carried out their own research on the subject, these studies provide the inside story for each country. They analyze the timing, size, and composition of capital inflows, their determinants, their impact on the domestic economies, and, in particular, the ways in which local economic authorities have reacted to the inflows and crises, and the effectiveness of these policies in changing the size and/or composition of capital inflows.
This volume will be of interest to scholars, policy-makers, students, and Latin American specialists investigating capital flows and capital controls in a fast-changing international environment.
Felipe Larraín B. is Robert F. Kennedy Visiting Professor of Latin American Studies, Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Professor of Economics, Universidad Católica de Chile.

5 out of 5 stars easy to read and useful.......2004-11-20

If you are working with Struts, Ant, or automated unit testing into your development process,
then this is a book for you.
This book looks at the popular Jakarta applications as
JUnit/Cactus, Struts, and Ant, and shows the most common pitfalls when using
                    these applications. The book gives
a chapter to Ant and one chapter to JUnit/Cactus and rest to Struts.
Most part of the book is on Struts. The authors discuss potential
problems using Actions, ActionForms, and Struts tag library.

Each pitfall has its own section and is formatted the same as the others.
You get a description of each pitfall, an example of the pitfall in action,
and steps for refactoring it. Corrective solutions are well documented with plenty of code samples
to show both before and after images.

This is a good book on anti-patterns and refactoruing, very good companion of the book <<Rafactorying>> (by Martin Fowler)
                    and
<<Java Tools for Extreme Programming: Mastering Open Source Tools Including Ant, JUnit, and Cactus>>
(this one covers ant and junit/cactus but not struts)

This book is very readable, some may think it just covers obvious problems, actually, it coveres common pitfalls
that most people forget to escape. It's not a difficult book, but very practical.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the architectural problems of Struts.......2004-02-17

If you are designing a large-scaled web application based on Struts, you should read this book first. Reading this book will help you avoid Struts architectural pitfalls and get a better idea what the Struts framework really offers. The pitfalls discussed in this book are all really insightful ,and the solutions suggested by the authors are well-designed and practical. An excellent pitfalls book!

2 out of 5 stars The synopsis in the back is the entire book.......2003-12-19

The book is fine, but it in the back is a boiled down synopsis, about 5 pages, that suffices for the entire book. The rest of the book doesn't really add that much. The material here is good, but is available by reading a few white papers and faq's on the web. I didn't dislike the book, I just wish I hadn't spent the money.

5 out of 5 stars must have reference!.......2003-11-15

Whether you're a beginner or an expert on Struts, Ant or JUnit, this book will provide you all the items you should watch out for. And if you're already in trouble with any of these technologies, its very likely that this book has it.

4 out of 5 stars Where was this book when I was cutting my teeth on Cactus.......2003-10-15

This is an important book. If you're new to any of these tools, don't waste your time hitting the same potholes that everyone else has. The authors took some good notes in trenches, and they present their pitfalls in a structure way that builds one upon another.

I just wish this book was available when I was first getting started with Cactus!? It will be at my elbow as I start my upcoming Struts project.

(The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I ran across a few typos.)
