Customer Reviews:
The book is subpar.......2003-12-12
This book simply rips off stuff from other books and presents it in an unorderly fashion. If you want to delve into J2EE please consider spending a few bucks more to get good books on the specific subjects.
Excellent book!.......2003-06-06
Great for student and experienced programmers. I find myself reading this book every time I need to learn a new topic on J2EE or as a reference. This is not a "For Dummies" book but at the same time it is very easy to read and understand. The sample codes go straigth to the point. It tells you things you do not find in other books but at the same time it is a summary of about 25 different books.
I highly recommend this book to any java programmer.

Customer Reviews:
A Solid Effort!.......2001-09-29
It's nice to read a book written by the fellow "who wrote the book." Alan R. Schonberg is that guy, the chairman of the world's largest executive recruiting firm. The insights into job hunting that he provides are well worth the classy sales pitch he offers on behalf of the headhunting profession. You wish he would give more insider headhunter's information - one senses that he has politely declined to publish all his business secrets. Still, there's a lot here to ponder. Thus, we at [...] recommend this book to people who want to turn job hunting into a process that can enhance their dignity, salary and job-satisfaction. A show of hands, please.
Don't waste your money or time...........2001-07-13
This alleged "book" offers insights only a seriously impaired job hunter would find valuable. You won't learn anything about Head Hunters or the executive search industry. The "chapters" average 1 1/2 pages long -- no exaggeration. Geared to a third grade reading (and job hunting) level, you fully expect pictures and the words The End on the last page. Prepare to be disappointed. Enjoy gems of advice akin to 'Use your hand to shake hands at the beginning and end of an interview!' and 'Paper is a good material to use when creating a resume'. (These are not quotes from the book -- but I fully expect the author to try to steal them for use in his next "book.")
Misses the Mark.......2000-11-12
While it contains a few useful nuggets, this book never really addresses how to team with a recruiter to get a top position. For a more direct, concise look at working successfully with a headhunter, see my book, "The Road to CEO."
Misses the Mark.......2000-11-12
While it contains a few useful nuggets, this book never really addresses how to team with a recruiter to get a top position. For a more direct, concise look at working successfully with a headhunter, see "The Road to CEO" by Sharon Voros.
Great Tips.......2000-03-10
Written in a very breezy style, this book is full of surprisingly good tips and advice about the job market. Some of it is common sense, but common sense to a professional headhunter might not occur to someone who doesn't look for a new job every day of the year. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to make a career change, but particularly to anyone fairly new to the job market. Many of the tips are equally good for keeping your job or getting ahead as for changing.

Finally A Plan for My Life Agenda!!.......2002-10-05
The 7 Laws of Highest Prosperity is the greatest book I've read this year! This book helped to get a clear focus on what God wants me to do. It is a refreshing story about how God desires all of us to be prosperous in every area of our lives. What better what to witness than through success! If you're looking for clear understanding of God's purpose for your life, then this is the book for you!
Down to Earth Help for the Hopeless & the Hopeful!.......2002-10-03
Cecil O. Kemp's "7 Laws of Highest Prosperity" has more practical spiritual guidance than Steven Covey's "Seven Habits of Highly Successful People", and is more readable than Spencer Johnson's "Who Moved My Cheese?". Following Sam's road from lowly beginnings to "highest prosperity" was for me both a pleasure and a beginning of my own journey to seek highest prosperity. When it comes to knowing how to live prosperously, Kemp hits the nail on the noggin! No false premise here.
A Modern Day Parable.......2002-09-25
This book reads like a modern-day parable; a story that draws one in and makes one look at oneself with new eyes. I felt like Kemp was writing about ME.
As I shared the book with friends, their reaction was much the same.
I have highly recommend 7 Laws of Highest Prosperity to my church members.
Highly Recommended.......2002-08-22
A wonderful story, a wonderful lesson in life. This book is insightful and truly inspirational. You cannot read this book without comparing yourself with the main character, Sam the Wood Gatherer. The lessons of life here are more valuable than any financial returns that may come from following Sam's lead. This is NOT your typical book on prosperity. All too often, these books focus primarily, if not entirely on self. The lesson here is that prosperity will come to you if you focus your energies on others. It is a fairly short book, just over 100 pages, but the power in those pages is immense.
I enjoyed this book so much that I am in the process of gathering several other Cecil Kemp books for reading. I have just finished my second, "The Secret Meeting Place," and it may actually be even better than this one.
If you are looking for more from your life, this is one of the most important books you may ever read. Don't miss it!
Now That's Prosperity!.......2002-07-30
If you think you know what prosperity is, this book may change your mind. It presents the fullest definition of "Propserity" I've ever found. So much of what we call success is only superficial, but this book goes deep. Written as a short novel, it will keep you on the edge of your seat as the main character moves from a wood cutter to "highest prosperity." I love it.
Book Description
Despite the prodigious research and money devoted to new product development, nearly nine in ten new products fail to solve a perceived need--and are gone within their first two years. This unique new book introduces and explains Market-Driven Product Definition (MDPD), a proven methodology for identifying and understanding customer-value-based needs, then turning them into products that consistently break through the clutter of the marketplace.
Drawing on techniques developed by experts from MIT, the University of Chicago, and the Center for Management of Quality, as well as product development experiences from inside hundreds of top companies, including Abbott, Compaq, and Cisco, the book reveals MDPD techniques managers can use to:
* Determine customer needs and value-based requirements
* Choose which requirements to satisfy in order to distinguish their products from the competition
* Determine which trade-offs can--and must--be made in product development
* Decrease time to market by up to 40 percent and minimize time to profit.
Customer Reviews:
Author is very rude.......2005-02-24
I contacted the author, Sheila Mello, to purchase this title directly from the publisher. Sheila was very rude and unhelpful. She hung up on me once. After contacting her again she told me that it was too much trouble for her to sell me one copy and said to go elsewhere. Personally, this is very bad business and not a good way to promote your book.
Right the first time!.......2003-11-06
The message of the book is right on the money, All to often in a rush to get the product/service to the market, top management, product development teams and product management lose focus in the product development process - the customer! While time to market is critical success is essential. Sheila Mello has developed a process that provides a road map to follow and backs up the validity of MDPD methodolgy with numerous case studies of those companies which have integrated the MDPD process. Far too often when the product development process is complete and the product finally launched it does not meet the financial projections or the needs of the targted market . If anyone involved in the product development process wants success and not failure, this is a MUST READ!
Logical Presentation of Product Development.......2002-09-02
This book explains the core reason why we did not have a good product based on our assumptions of what we understood from customers because of insufficient interviews and probing. The concept of validation and prioritization is simple and yet we often overlooked. This is especially true when the product development team consists mainly of Sales People. The Author says correctly in the book that these same people may influence the opinion of others in the group because the Sales people feels that they know the customer better than anyone else. More often than not, this strangled off other out-of-the-box questions to the customer that the brainstorming session should provide.
Taking CRM back to it's roots.......2002-07-10
It's not about customer relationship management after a product is developed. It's about building the product that customer's want from the beginning. The message of the book is fantastic!
The content of the book is very good although at times late in the book you will want to slow down, digest and focus on understanding what is being done to pull a lot of the tools together in Ms. Mello's methodology. Very good tool for the product manager!
Great foundation for a product development process.......2002-04-13
This book lays out a step-by-step approach for new product development. I like the way they do their surveys and customer visits.
The first 1/3 of the book was a little dry, but the book overall is very easy to read. It was hard to put down as I was very interested in how they would put the whole process together. Some of the examples and tables needed more explanation. They were not as clear as they could have been. But overall this is a highly recomended book. Probably a MUST READ.
Although this book is largely "on target" in terms of how to organize your customer-centric approach to product development... I think it lacks certain human intuitive points. For example, there was no discussion of the name of the product, nor much on ergonomics. This book needs to be read in conjunction of those by Barry Feig and Doug Hall.
In this regard, I would think that a company like HP would use this type of approach, but not Steve Jobs of Apple.
I learned several important quantitative approaches to measuring what the customer wants. But at the same time I think their quantitative approach may be somewhat utopian. For example, when you do your customer visits and later your surveys, you may find that you discover something new... so you scramble and change your questions to proceed further. This would mess up the data in their approach. Thus, I think the process is a little more messy in real life. And, for really important decisions, intuition plays a greater role. I don't think I made up a matrix decision chart when I decided to marry my wife. There are alot of decisions that are like this in the product development area.
Another area where I had trouble was in the use of "value mapping" analysis in doing trade offs for deciding what features need to be included. This is another one of those cases of over-relying on the matrix approach. Suppossedly we are to determine a customer value -- either on productivity improvements, cost reduction or other subjective judgements. Well, let me tell you, this is ripe for serious manipulation. All you can do is get the customer to react to your designs. You need to read the Barry Feig books for more discussion on this.
However, I will use their quantitative approach in my next product development quest, realizing that it may get messed up a little. I really liked their discussion of how to do questionaires (the Kano method was terrific).
I thought their discussion of developing customer images was also great, but I got the feeling that this was not the author's forte, as this was more intuitive type of thing. Regardless, this was valable to me and I'm glad they included this in the book.
Perhaps most important to me was their confirmation that the biggest reason for missing the customer's desires... was FAILURE TO PROBE. I wholeheartedly agree. That's one of the reasons I laugh when I see the mall interviewers asking all those closed-questions. The author does a great job of discussion this.
The author, Sheila Mello, passes my test for a business author: she is a consultant in the field. This is not a book by some college professor preaching his hands-off theories.
There was a lot that I agreed with in this book, and there was a lot of important ideas that I picked up, and will implement next time. I recommend that this book be read before the Feig and Hall books to provide you a base foundation for your approach.
Highly recomended book, if not MUST READ.

Book Description
The political economic history of Latin America in the post-World War II era has largely been one of underachievement and opportunities lost. This all changed with the wave of market reforms that were implemented in the 1990s. However, the precise role of these reforms as an agent of change is still hotly debated. This in-depth analysis of the Peruvian case argues for an explanation that treats institutional innovation and state reconstruction as necessary conditions for the apparent success of the market in Latin America.
Exploring how state intervention has been both the cause of Latin America's economic downfall in the 1980s and the solution to its recovery, Reinventing the State analyzes three main phases of state intervention: the developmentalism that lasted until 1982, the state in retreat of the 1980s, and the streamlined state of the 1990s. Through a comprehensive examination of the Peruvian experience, the book explains the country's impressive turnaround from the standpoint of institutional modernization and internal state reform.
Written for a broad academic audience, the public-policy community, and the private sector, this book is also meant as a quick primer for any journalist, consultant, or private-sector analyst in need of an overview of the region's market-reform effort and how it has played out in Peru.
Carol Wise is Associate Professor, School of International Relations, University of Southern California.
Customer Reviews:
The importance of the public administration.......2004-11-17
Beyond the particular history that it is told (about Peru and the disappointments with the goal of economic development)this book highlights the importance of having competent and autonomous agencies to implement the public policies which the elected officers choose. This autonomy stands for several levels:
- Independent thinking (so, the agencies could have different opinions regarding the issues which concern to politicians).
- Independent action (they should have a legal framework to issue their own administrative orders, and if politicians don't like some developments of these agencies they should try to change his directors, not take political control. This also means that they are responsible of their own success and failures).
- Administrative autonomy (the agencies decide who is hired and how, and who is fired and why, and should have the budget to operate as it is required).
During the period of 1960-2000, in Peru, we had a relatively competent and autonomous agencies only after 1992. Before this period something was wrong: or the agencies (which were taken by the political parties and his clients), or the goverments (which didn't respect the guidelines and administrative orders issued by the agencies). My personal conclusion of this work is that:
- The specialized knowledge on several issues regarding public policies is valuable, makes the difference, and is embodied in independent agencies with planners and professionals who have made their careers in there. To waste this knowledge should produce "state failures" (as opposed to the "market failures"), when implementing the public policies is the main task.
- The specialized knowlege and skills of every agency could counterbalance other points of view when the public policies are planned, and this is an important advantage of having good agencies and good goverment officers in there.
- The autonomy of agencies gives to the public policies stability and direction. Only under these two conditions could produce results which are measurable by everybody.
The different economic policies which were chosen in the period 1960-2000 could have flaws from the blueprints (and, indeed, they had) but above all, and with the exception of the last decade, they missed the capabilities in the public administration to try hard these choices. And only for this finding this book seems to me a very good book on peruvian politics and economics.
His hypothesis and method could be applied to the study of any other developing country of the region.
