Energy, the State, and the Market: British Energy Policy since 1979

The transformation of Britain's energy policy in the last two decades has been more radical than any such change in developed economies. Since 1979 the great state energy monopolies created after the Second World War have been privatised and made subject to competition. Images of Arthur Scargill and the miners' strike of the 1980s remain vivid, but what effect has the new market philosophy had on Britain's energy industries? Since 1979 the National Coal Board, British Gas, and the Central Electricity Generating Board have all been broken up. Energy trading, electricity pools, auctions, and futures markets first developed, but they failed to solve the old energy policy problems of security of supply and network integrity, and the new ones of the environment and reliance on gas. The government introduced a new regulatory regime as a temporary necessity but regulation did not wither away, rather it grew to be more pervasive. Changing the ownership of the industries did not reduce the government's involvement, it simply changed its form. The 1980s and 1990s were years of energy surpluses and low fossil-fuel prices. There was little need to invest, and much of the investment in the so-called dash for gas was artificially stimulated. The new owners sweated the assets, and engaged in major financial engineering. Takeovers consolidated the industry into a smaller number of dominant firms. As investment priorities became more urgent, with the environmental pressures of climate change and the gradual switch to imported gas, the market philosophy was found wanting. Energy policy could not rely solely on the market. And it is the government which finds itself responsible for resolving the core issues of energy policy. Helm's book tells this story. It is a major study of the new market approach to energy policy in Britain since 1979. It describes the miners' strike, the privatisations of the gas, electricity, nuclear generation, and coal industries, and looks at events such as the dash for gas, regulatory failures in setting monopoly prices, and the takeovers and the consolidations of the late 1990s. Helm sets out the achievements of the new market philosophy, but also analyses why it has ultimately failed to turn energy industries into normal commodity businesses. The revised paperback edition includes a new chapter on the White Paper on a low-carbon economy and updated discussions on nuclear power, to incorporate the 2003 Nuclear White Paper, price reviews, and emissions trading.

The Etiquette Of Interpersonal Communication.......2007-10-11

This is a refreshing book. It's well-written, entertaining, and practical.

The author is very British, which to me makes it easier to deal with than some of our more crude communication books such as the Gentle Art Of Verbal Self-Defense series. We don't need verbal "self-defense" if we learn to communicate properly in the first place.

This is nothing new in this book. Please read it anyhow. The presentation is clear and polite, and encourages us to communicate clearly and honestly rather than attempt to manipulate the listener. A good idea all around.

The first time I was reading this book my husband phoned from work saying he was going to ditch an after-work meeting and make up an excuse the next day. I read him the three "R"s the author suggests and asked my husband to try using them. He did, with enormous success. He was excused from the meeting, not required to do any "make up" work, and thanked for being up front about his situation.

"Drop The Pink Elephant" is full of simple little gems that have moved me back on track with my own communication. My first college degree was in Interpersonal Communication with an Applied Linguistics minor, but over the decades my communication had gotten sloppy. With the help of this ingenious little book, in my daughter's words, I "make sense again."

"Pink Elephant" should be required reading (and studying) for all high school and/or college students. The world would be a safer, saner place if everyone practiced its simple suggestions.

Most of us grow up with bad communication habits inherited from our parents. Often times, we don't even realize they are bad. This books roots them out and replaces them with magic recipes for being liked, listened to and respected. I highly recommend reading the book and practicing its principles.

Stating the obvious, but, guess what, the obvious are not that obvious most of the time. I am a senior executive in a Fortune 100 company, and I find this very useful for my day-to-day communications with direct reports, with peers, with boss, and even supplier, customers.

it was a good read for me.. simple concepts to grasp (though will take effort to commit to..), funny, interesting and made me look inwards... the author garnishes this book with personal notes and experiences, which i find interesting and gives the work a down to earth feeling...

Brief Review of 'Drop the Pink Elephant'.......2003-10-04

Drop the Pink Elephant is an easy-to-read book for those concerned with the issue of personal communications.

I personally feel it is a more leisure and light-hearted version of Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People. The ideas given in Drop the Pink Elephant are a subset and sometimes an extension to the book by Carnegie, I feel.

Written with each point clearly in short paragraphs has made reading the book comprehensive. Interesting and fun illustrations found occasionally have also made reading enjoyable!

Harry Potter is a good book, but it is not the best book I've ever read. I liked how the characters were described. For example Harry Potter is described as having black and scraggly hair. I would recomend this book to anybody who likes adventure books.
