Book Description

This book is designed as a reference tool for students and writers, providing brief biographical data on the economists who have shaped the discipline of economics, and more extensive exposition and analysis of the major features of their economic thought. Fifty Major Economists provides balanced coverage of the contributions of a wide range of economists, from Adam Smith to Gary Becker and Robert E. Lucas, with more space being devoted to seminal theorists who opened up new horizons for economics. Lists of the writers' works are included, along with guides to further reading and a glossary of the economic terms used in the book.

I purchased this book to help with a research project I am planning to assign to high school seniors. It is very helpful by giving a snapshot view of each economist's theory.

5 out of 5 stars Economics in context.......2003-09-09

Steven Pressman's book is the best place for anyone to start reading about economics. What you get here is neither the one-sided, smug, neoclassical viewpoint that most books on economics take nor one full of revolutionary fervour. Instead, this short book moves chronologically through the economic landscape, pausing to highlight the important economic thinkers, their lives and thoughts, and explaining both their lasting ideas and forgotten ones.

Book Description

This volume, by two eminent monetarist economists, offers a unique perspective on a key issue of monetary economics: the effect of money on output. Karl Brunner and Allan Meltzer address the theoretical aspects of this issue with the purpose of understanding their policy implications. They offer an historical overview of the relationship between money and output, and then go on to present a model of a monetary economy before examining the real sector. The theme of the final lecture is uncertainty and the costs of acquiring information.

5 out of 5 stars Demonstrating the role of Keynesian(Ellsbergian)uncertainty.......2005-09-27

This book, although mistitled,is the best book that I HAVE EVER READ on theoretical and applied monetary economics. However, the correct title is "Keynesian Uncertainty,Money, and the Economy:Incorporating uncertainty(or Ellsbergian ambiguity)into monetary analysis".Brunner and Meltzer identify their position in this book as "weak monetarism".One can contrast this with strong monetarism, real business cycle theory, rational expectations, supply side economics, etc.,which denies that uncertainty plays any role in applied and theoretical economics.Only risk, represented by a normal probability distribution, has any role to play.Keynes would commend Brunner and Meltzer.Keynes would also state that he had never abandoned the Quantity theory of money, but had expanded and generalized its theoretical structure and range of application so as to deal with uncertainty, ambiguity, and ignorance.Keynes did this in chapter 21 of thr General Theory(see also p.209).A real synthesis is now possible between the economics of Keynes and the economics of Brunner and Meltzer .Instead of Keynes's difficult(but correct)elasticity analysis of chapters 20 and 21,we will present a generalized equation of exchange:instead of MV=PO,which views money as a transaction demand only, subject to risk as measured by a normal probability distribution's standard deviation,we incorporate a variable to measure Keynesian uncertainty(lack of weight in the A Treatise on Probability)or Ellsbergian ambiguity which we will designate as w.w is defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1.The equation of exchange then becomes M(Vw)=PO.w can also be given a nonlinear form if desired. If w=1,then only a transaction demand for money exists.Only risk needs to be taken into account. If w <1,the precautionary and speculative demands for money start to have an effect and uncertainty/ambiguity starts to cause problems in the real sector (on output,employment,investment,etc.).The w variables impact will show up with a "regular irregularity",a la Schumpeter, over time.Current econometric practice will not be able to measure the impact. It will be necessary to fall back on the new statistical toolkit created by Benoit Mandelbrot in order to take into account the impact of uncertainty and/or ambiguity.Brunner and Meltzer are correct when they state that"We share Keynes's emphasis on the pervasive uncertainty confronting decision makers"(p.65)and"We accept Keynes's distinction between actual and maximum output."(p.159).That leaves only the debate between discretion versus rules as a point of contention.Keynes would have favored some discretion within a rules criterion.I recommend this book to any reader interested in monetary policy, theory,or application.

Book Description

Intellectual property is hot news. Witness the almost daily reports of 'patent madness' and 'brand bullies' on one hand and 'illegal downloads' and the 'death of copyright' on the other. Balance this with the patenting of the human genome; one-click Amazon business method patents; drug patenting in South Africa; cybersquatting and digital piracy. However, the media reports provide only a snapshot of a much bigger picture and Virtual Monopoly offers pioneering insights into the major shifts taking place behind the headlines-developments that allow companies of any size to leverage their creative advantage. This book offers a radical vision of new economics at play, that of virtual monopoly in which creative vision is the starting point and intellectual property the enabling currency. Christopher Pike demonstrates how intellectual property rights in the form of patents, rights in designs, trademarks and copyrights can be used to protect a product and the business built around that product. Such definition of the intangible gives real advantages to business-a virtual monopoly. The economy is dumbing up. Breakthrough creativity is becoming the last great untapped source of sustainable advantage. But on its own, creative advantage is incapable of forming the basis for strong, sustainable business advantage. What really matters is a company's ability to build exclusive business space around that creative advantage by establishing effective barriers to competition. Virtual Monopoly will show you how to power up your own creative adantage to establish strong exclusive business spaces through the use of intellectual property. Think of iMac, Volkswagen Beetle or Dyson as not just great products but as exclusive design spaces protected by patents, designs and trademarks. The rewards of the new economics of virtual monopoly are there for the taking...

5 out of 5 stars Virtual Monopoly.......2002-01-09

Christopher Pike is not your run-of-the mill intellectual property adviser. Although qualified as a patent and trade mark attorney, his experience in dealing with business management issues comes through very directly when reading this book.
It is not always appreciated that there is a whole host of available strategies for businesses which are, knowingly and in some cases not, involved in generating intellectual property. Intellectual property generators often need commercially minded guidance appropriate to their markets and their approach to business as to how their intellectual property can be used to create value. Pike has identified and crystallised models and concepts in a way which makes the grander themes of intellectual property, often held as an impenetrable area for those outside its day-to-day practice, readily understandable. He sets out a useful vocabulary of concepts and terms, describing intellectual property as a currency used in buy-sell relations and for measuring creative advantage.
I suspect that Pike may be at the forefront of a new area of consulting which is much-needed but so-far overlooked. The book he has written will surely be a useful tool to a broad range of readers, particularly those looking for insight into modern approaches to intellectual property strategy. Whilst other books on IP may be found hidden in the law section of a bookshop, this will almost certainly be found in amongst the bestselling management books.

2 out of 5 stars For the want of a graphics department...........2004-09-04

I just received the new latest version of this book - August, 2004. The book succeeds in showing good and bad examples of the same presentations, but that doesn't require a book. It requires a graphics department. Nowhere does the book tell you how to make any of the charts. In today's world, many of us must create our own presentations with whatever is available, usually Excel or Powerpoint or similar tools.

I would also offer that most readers will not work through the exercises, as the percentage of our jobs that requires chart development is usually small. I grasped the basics of the book quickly. Keep it simple. I will assume that certain professionals, such as those in marketing or sales or executives giving a presentation to the board of directors, might need this level of specialization, but I find little useful in the book. Following the guideline of 'keep it simple', I will simplify my priorities, by focusing on other skills mastery. Mastering charts to this degree is beyond my needs.

    2 out of 5 stars Average book.......2005-09-13

Ok. I did not like this book that much but it has some good information inside. It just felt like a cheap knockoff of "How to make 1000 a minute" yet it still had some fresh sections. If you only want one book on negotiation, pass on this one. If you already have 1000 a minute and want more info, get "What color is your parachute"?

If you got both and want more info, this one fits the bill. I give it a generous 2 stars because it has some ok tips and a very excellent chapter 9 "Lessons learned from job applicants and employers".

That chapter along with the rest of the mediocre book, make for an average rating 2.5 out of five on a VERY generous scale. In fact on a non generous scale I would probably rate this a 1.

If you still want this book, I'll sell you mine at half price.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the time unless you are..........2005-07-20

This book was written for Harvard graduates. It is dated and doesn't take into account current market condition. The book assumes all applicant have college degrees, have multiple job offers to choose from, and are only negotiating yearly salaries plus bonuses (not hourly rates, part time positions, commission based positions).

The resources supplied in the book are old, and most don't work. The book was written pre 9/11 and doesn't take into account the current market.

I recommend this book for individuals graduating from, top level private universities, and are interested in 60k/yr positions w/ a company car. To reference the other poor review, "the book was written by a professor with no real world experience."

When negotiating salary, one need to take into account all levels of work, environment, and economy this book doesn't!

5 out of 5 stars well worth the money.......2005-04-21

I was pleasantly surprised at what I got out of the book - it teaches you specific tactics, but the most valuable advice is to to develop a positive and win-win attitude towards negotiation. It should not be a win-lose game, instead it should be a process to explore various options to get a happy ending for both you and your employer

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Invaluable Tool.......2003-11-26

My first interaction with this text was in 2000 attending Prof. Northcraft's class at the University of Illinois. This was easily the most influential class I experienced as a graduate student, thus I am obviously a little biased as a reviewer. However, now as a member of "Corporate America" I have recently revisited it, and have found the knowledge contained within to be indespensible to my current work. In a very easy-to-read and concise manner Prof. Northcraft gets to the heart of what one needs to succeed in negotiation. The discussion takes you beyond broad-brush theory and focuses on some concrete strategies that can elevate your skill as a negotiator.

My only complaint is the title. This book can help the reader with much more than negotiating a jucier bonus. Anyone looking to improve their negotiation skill for any purpose can learn plenty from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Must-read for all seeking new jobs!.......2001-06-12

This is a must-read for anyone looking for a job or seeking to make the money they deserve in the job they already have. Northcraft and Pinkley are smart, down-to-earth negotiators who show you how you can do your best to negotiate the best salary you can get. Those out of work will gain strength and self-pride from this book, despite their situation -- perhaps the most important help the book offers, in the end!

1 out of 5 stars not worth your money.......2004-05-27

I read many books on the topic but this one is a good attempt on the subject but not worth the money, and not worth the time. I usually don't write negative reviews but I personally would not buy this book. I like books that are simplier and yet deep, but this book will easily confuse you. It is too expensive and there are books under $30 will give you muce more information and benefit

4 out of 5 stars Good overall handling of subject.......2001-06-05

This book handles the issues associated with new product introduction very well. Most books on the subject concentrate on either the product designing aspects or the market orientations. This books brings forth the impact and importance of market conditions on the development of a new product very succinctly. It begins by looking at the product development cycle and then leads the reader through the various steps from product design through associated supply-chain management issues to present an overall picture. Appropriately placed illustrative examples and well depicted system diagrams along with graphical display of results increase the utility of the book for both, the in-depth researcher as also the casual reader.

Japanese manufacturing firms established in Britain have often been portrayed as carriers of Japanese corporate best practice for work and employment. In this book, the authors challenge these views through case study research, undertaken at several Japanese manufacturing plants in Britain during the 1990s. The authors argue that in actual fact production and employment regimes are adapted and 're-made' in a number of ways, responding to specific corporate and local contexts. In particular, they focus upon the ways in which Japanese and British managers have sought to construct distinctive work regimes in the light of their particular branch plant mandates and competencies, the evolving character of management-worker relations within factories and the varied product and labour market conditions they face. The book highlights the constraints as well as the opportunities facing managers of these greenfield workplaces, and the uncertainties that continued to characterize the development of management strategies. Ultimately the authors show how arguments about the role of overseas branch plants in the dissemination of management practices must take more careful account of the varied ways in which such factories are implicated in wider corporate strategies. The operations of international firms are embedded within intractable features of capitalist employment relations, especially as they are 're-made' in specific local and national settings. This book is an important intervention in contemporary debate about international firms and globalization, and will be of interest to teachers, researchers, and advanced students of this subject from disciplines including Business Studies, Organization Studies, Industrial Relations, Sociology, Political Economy, and Economic and Social Geography.
