    Book Description

This topical book addresses contemporary concern with the interconnections between geography and morality. It recognizes that there are 'moral geographies ', involving differences in moral values and practices from place to place. It also recognizes that there are moralities in geography, in the sense of research methods and practices which may be subject to normative evaluation and codes of professional ethics. After a foreword by Revaz Gachechiladze and an introductory chapter by the editors explaining the academic context and approach adopted, contributors from a number of different countries provide international perspectives on the issues, supported by case studies from their own original research. These case studies deal with a wide range of controversial topics, including global inequalities, uneven development in Europe, struggles over human rights in Nigeria, territorial conflict in Israel and land reform in post-apartheid South Africa.

      Book Description

From the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School comes a revolutionary guide to mastering the business world in the digital age

In 1960, Mark McCormack revolutionized the sports world when he shook hands with a young golfer named Arnold Palmer. It was that simple handshake, combined with a love of golf, that clinched a deal that would help him to build IMG, the most successful and prestigious sports management agency in the world. In 1984, he shook the business world with his landmark bestseller What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School, a pragmatic manual of real business advice that became the first mega-bestseller of its genre. Now, McCormack returns with the trademark practical, straightforward yet timely wisdom that has established his books as classics in their field.

Staying Street Smart in the Internet Age is a sensible yet revolutionary protocol for doing business in the age of E-mail, fax machines, mobile phones, and voice mail. McCormack's revolutionary message this time is that there hasn't been a revolution, despite the advent of the cyber age. We still have to conduct business face-to-face. Human communication and contact--how you actually run your day, your life, your office; how you treat your employees, and how you deal with clients and competitors--are still the keys creating a successful, profitable, and stable business. The power of the personal touch is what ultimately seals a business deal. The internet is a fact of life, McCormack acknowledges, but it is no replacement for the old-fashioned business lunch. Our experience, judgment, and human contact are the most important "product"we sell in business.

In ninety-one short take chapters Staying Street Smart in the Internet Age outlines the basic business strategies and common sense that will help managers, business people, and anyone in company life master any upheavals in the digital economy.

5 out of 5 stars Ideas are money.......2006-03-14

The internet does not change everything. Building relationships of trust is still required. Rely on face-to-face personal skills, common decencies like politeness and sensitivity to other people feelings, and the need for human contact.
      1. The best solution is not going to come from the people you have locked in a room. Experience and talent combine too solve a problem and these people are often found externally.
      2. The customers, who will have the most impact on your sales performance, are not your customers now. Therefore, the drive and reality of success is proportional too the number of new customers.
      3. Creativity means connecting two disparate concepts and coming up with a third concept. If people appreciate your creativity, you will be rewarded through out your life. Hire people with talent and creativity rather than skills. Invest in skills as part of the job training.
      4. Regard your job as a project, make a contribution, meet new people, gain some knowledge, and associate with success that looks good. Careers are a continuum of increasingly more important projects.
      5. Schedule to end the day, the same time each day. Learn how to accomplish more in less time (reverse Parkinson Law theory): focus on improving what you do best, arrive an hour early, close the office door, work through lunch, extend "to-do lists" over multiple days, and work on highest priority tasks first.
      6. You only need two or three good reasons to tip a decision one way or another. Don't get caught up into complex decision trees looking for the optimal choice, instead use two or three of the best reasons too make a decision.
      7. The best ideas usually start out as little ideas and grow into big ideas. Big ideas are attractive and they gain the attention of the company and its support; however, big ideas are complicated legally, financially, and logistically; and many big ideas never materialize into reality.
      8. Ideas are money. You should be constantly sharing good ideas with your boss and making your boss look good is health for your career. If good ideas are sitting out in the open, they can be stolen and in competitive environments coworkers will quickly claim the idea is theirs.
      9. An idea must be a recombinant of two disparate ideas. The best ideas are impossible to be stolen. A good idea is so original and creative it cannot survive without the creator of the idea because he understands the concept fully and is the one who can execute it up to its full potential.
      10. The size and dimension of an idea is unknown until you act upon it and see how it plays out in the market place. Let the market place be the judge on the quality of the idea.
      11. In order to get through to the president, you must become friends with the secretary. They are the gatekeepers.
      12. Pay attention to the care and feeding of your enemies. Acknowledge their existence. The richest sources of enemies are your peers, who are competing with you up the corporate ladder. Do love to fight and choose not too fight with your enemies because it distracts from your performance. Benjamin Franklin said, "Do good to thy friend too keep him, and to they foe to gain him."

4 out of 5 stars Good round-up of common sense in business relationships.......2003-10-31

This review is of the paperback edition re-published as 'Never Wrestle with a Pig').
It's not the first book by Mark McCormack I've read. Like the others, its very readable, and gives a collection of homespun philosophies, interspersed with personal ife experiences. There's a strong emphasis on Sales, but 'selling' is surely part of all of our business relationships.
Just don't believe in the gospel of everything McCormack has to say; there are contradictions, just as life is full of them, such as :
In Part 8 'When you are in Charge' there is the lesson "trust your 1st impression", whereas in Part 9 'Etiquette for the New Millenium' there is a "caveat about reading people too quickly" - so which is it to be?
Consider it light reading to just remind you of the good & bad things that you can do to others & they can do to you, and re-adjust & compensate accordingly.

      5 out of 5 stars Good.......2001-01-01

The title just uses the buzzword "internet" to get your attention. It could have been called "career and business tips," which is basically what it is. McCormack's writing has gotten better since his earlier books, so I found this one good on that account. His tips have a bit more depth here, too. He mentions how his 2nd wife has helped him learn to "stop and smell the roses," and perhaps that's why this book seems less "combat"-like than some of his past books. Plus, his arrogance, that would bleed between the lines in past books was, thankfully, missing. (For example, in earlier books he said, "I made a lot of money at a young age, so I never resented others who did," not considering that perhaps some readers are young and broke, or old and broke, and might resent HIM. And also he said, "99% of people should work for someone else," which conveniently puts him in the elite 1%, and, never mind that through most of history, until the industrial revolution, most people were self-employed.) Anyway, this book is readable and helpful, with some tips I don't think I would have seen anywhere else. He does reuse anecdotes that he uses in other books, but I didnt' mind. If you want a general career-tips book, this is as good as any recent ones I've read recently.

4 out of 5 stars CLEVER! UPBEAT! TRENDY! LIFE IN THE FAST LANE!.......2000-10-01

This book is about career management and office politics. It contains a lot of straight-forward, down-to-earth tips for getting along with co-workers, bosses, and clients. This "Arli$$- agent's" clientele includes Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer and Venus and Serena Williams. What he offers is common sense as applied to a plethora of topics like goal setting, picking up the check, managing time, dealing with enemies, managing your work- just doing business in a "smart" way. Thinking of all those Olympic atheletes who will be returning to their respective countries to assimilate back into the work force, or pursue endorsements or dreams of gold in 2004, it seems to me another astute book about self-management is timely, especially coming from the chief executive of a sport and entertainment conglomerate like International Creative Management. It is a step up from his previous book, "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School". Mr McCormack's book seeks to prepare readers for life in the fast lane, and for success. Interesting! A very interesting presentation.

3 out of 5 stars Is Mark McCormack Aware of the Internet Age?.......2000-09-01

I have enjoyed Mr. McCormack's earlier books very much. So I was surprised that I did not find this one very valuable. If you read many of my reviews, you know it is unusual for me to grade a book down to a 3 star rating. Let me explain why I did so in this case.

First, the title suggests that the book will provide lots of perspective on the Internet Age. Wrong! In fact, there is very little discussion of the Internet. And most of that discussion is in the introduction where Mr. McCormack points out that he doesn't even use a computer. He makes several self-revealing comments. "But let's say I'm a reluctant convert to the Internet gospel." "My only problem is that I don't understand what it will grow into." "I have the luxury of being in the sports business which, as far as I can tell, is one 'industry' that's immune to the Internet." In a few other cases he provides anecdotes from his business career about people overusing e-mail rather than talking to each other by telephone or face-to-face. As a result, he misses important questions. How can his agency develop more business by using the Internet in new ways? So, I think the title is very misleading. Anyone who wants to get practical advice for working with the Internet should avoid this book.

The second problem I saw was that I saw no important new material in the book. The principles are all covered in his earlier books. You get 90 principles described here in 2-4 pages. The examples are all from the author's business, so you get little sense of other businesses or perspectives that might be best practices. They also reflect a perspective that many may not share.

Here are some of the subjects:

      Giving Yourself a Reality Check

      Speed, the Defining Factor

Giving the Workplace a Reality Check

      Office Politics

      Acquiring a Power Base

Promotions, Demotions, and other Career Hiccups

      Rules for Deal Makers

      When You Are in Charge

      Etiquette for the New Millennium

As you can see, this perspective focuses on the larger organization (the kind that fewer people work for these days) and someone who wants to climb up the organization (something that is less important than self-fulfillment and contribution to many).

The book is at its best when it argues for treating people well, being considerate as though one were dealing with one's neighbor in a small town. That advice is timeless. The book is also excellent in helping to unveil the sources of misconception that cause each of us to overestimate our performance and to misperceive what we need to be doing. I heartily approve of these messages.

If you have read Mark McCormack before, I recommend you skip this book. It will add almost nothing but occasional nuances to what you have learned from him already.

If you have not read him before, I suggest you read one of his earlier books instead. What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School is a classic.

In either case, I suggest you skip this one.

If you insist on reading this book, focus on parts one, three, six, seven and nine. They are the most helpful and appropriate for today.

Ask yourself after you read this book then "Who are the people who can provide relevant perspectives that are relevant for today?" Getting the right advice often means asking the right person.

5 out of 5 stars A book that changed my presentation life.......2002-02-21

In retrospect, I realize that this book is the source of so many of the stories and principles that I pass on to others about making presentations. Key concepts, vividly and succinctly explained. I originally saw a video presentation that was a companion to the book, but reviewing the book again now brings those thoughts home again.

For me, some of the most important points are ones that innoculated me against a lot of bad advice that's out there. I'm sorry to see it's out of print. I'm still going to recommend it to the rest of my company.

        5 out of 5 stars the best.......2001-05-23

After 15 years of public speaking, I still think this book is hands down the very best on this topic. It's short, pithy style is perfect (just the like talk you want to give). Paul LeRoux presents the keys to successful presentations in a compelling manner. Anyone who speaks to a group is selling something, if only a point of view.

3 out of 5 stars Which Companies Have the Most to Offer Workers?.......2006-01-13

Rating companies as "great" is, of course, a subjective undertaking and no two people will agree on which ones are the best. What sets these companies apart from others is their flexibility and concern for their employees' health and overall happiness, rather than only being concerned with bottom- line profits. The management philosophy that these corporations utilize emphasizes the idea that happy employees are more productive and more likely to remain loyal to their employer. Any loss incurred, by offering more flexibility, will be more than made up for by the extra productivity and loyal years of service.

Some of these companies, as described by the authors, do seem like fun places to work. Southwest Airlines, in particular, offers an exceptionally enjoyable work environment. According to the authors, Southwest Airlines employees routinely joke around, play games and pranks, dress casually every day, etc. Employees of Southwest Airlines have often stated that they actually look forward to going to work! That's something that few other employees can say.

This is a pretty good book to read, full of interesting facts and figures relating to some of America's best corporations. There is one bad thing about this type of book: It becomes outdated too quickly. The authors release new versions, but they often go from several years to as many as ten years between each. That's a little bit too long, in my opinion, for this type of book. With the fast- changing pace of business, I wouldn't be surprised if many of these 100 Best Companies have fallen off the list. As a matter of fact, from the first edition to the second, only about 55 companies were still good enough to be included in the revised edition. This is the type of book that needs to be updated much more frequently, like maybe every 2 or 3 years, to ensure accuracy. For example, J.C. Penney is included in the 1994 edition. I would bet that, if a new book were published today, J.C. Penney would no longer be included.

Overall, this is an interesting book to read and it does keep your attention. It makes you critical of your own place of employment. You'll start to wonder why your employer doesn't offer any special benefits, like free lunch and the use of a company vacation resort. Who cares about dental and vision insurance coverage when you can have a discounted resort to take a vacation?

If you feel intrigued by what you read in this book, don't just jump up and move across the country to work for one of these companies. Do your homework first! Corporate benefits change constantly. The great companies of yesterday can quickly fall into difficult financial straits, and be forced to eliminate many of these extra employee benefits and perks. Make sure you check before you make your move.

                  2 out of 5 stars Out-of-Date Information about a Moving Target.......2000-12-29

The only way this book can help you is if you first read the latest list of best places to work published in a business magazine. Compare the that list with this one, and then read about the companies in this volume that appear on both lists. That will give you a sense of where the company's environment was back in the early 1990s. That consistency of being a superior place to work increases the likelihood that you will have located a place that will continue to be a good place to work in the future.

As the authors point out, between 1984 (when they published the original research on this subject) and 1994 (when this paperback edition was published) only 55 of the original 100 companies persisted on the list. I suspect that the fallout since 1994 has been even greater. The list contains many companies that went through dire times in the 1990s like Armstrong, Compaq, Cray, Cummins Engine, Donnelly, DuPont, Hewlett-Packard, Inland Steel, Kellogg, 3M, Motorola, J.C. Penney, Tandem, and Xerox. In fact, companies that are riding for a fall in their business peformance are often the ones that have been great places to work. Before its performance plummeted in the early 1990s, IBM used to be on the list . . . just before it laid off an enormous percentage of the total workforce.

So a weakness of this backward-looking research is that it is not very good at predicting what will be the best companies to work for. The list is obviously dominated by very big companies, and they are the ones that offer the least job stability these days, even though the authors try to make the opposite point. "Job security is not a relic of the past for them."

The more obvious point is that for tens of millions of Americans the best employer is themselves. That point is not considered in this book.

The majority of the organizations and companies that will provide the best pay/benefits, opportunities, job security, pride in work/company, openness/fairness, and camaraderie/friendliness (the criteria for selection by the authors) in the next 10 years either were tiny or did not exist in 1994. So you need more contemporary sources for your search.

A good example of the need for newer information is that many companies now encourage you to work at home, due to the Internet. If you want to do that, this book won't help you find those companies. If you want to avoid doing that, this book won't help you avoid those companies.

My main concern about studies like this is that they focus your attention on what your employer can do for you. I suspect that thinking about your personal life goals would be a better starting point. Then, within those goals, what kind of career works best for the future in light of important future trends? Then, what jobs should you consider to develop that career? Next, should you work for someone else or be on your own? Finally, how should you screen potential employers to meet your personal criteria? After you have finished doing all that thinking, I doubt if this book will be very helpful to you.

Don't let the old paradigm of the employer as the source of paternalism and stability distort your judgment of what's right for you!

Make your life a joy by following the road to health, happiness, peace, and prosperity!

                            Book Description

This fourth updated and revised edition of "ON YOUR OWN" provides practical advice to the recent widow to help her achieve emotional and financial stability. This classic best selling book for widows is coauthored by Alexandra Armstrong, a nationally recognized financial planner who has worked with many widows over the years, and Dr. Mary Donahue, a psychologist who is experienced in grief counseling. The authors firmly believe there is a strong connection between the widow's emotional and financial recovery from the pain of widowhood. They think that to focus on one to the exclusion of the other prevents sucessful recovery since the two issues are intertwined. When the widow gains control of her financial situation, then it makes it easier to heal emotionally and vice versa. "ON YOUR OWN" leads the widow through the recovery process step by step, providing practical advice which should help her move forward to achieve emotional and financial stability. In this book they show the widow how to: . Cope with your loss . Deal with your emotional needs . Organize your finances . Construct a realistic budget . Understand your investments . Develop a long-term financial plan The book is made more interesting and meaningful as the reader follows the stories of four widows ages 40 to 80 as they move in each chapter through the various stages of recovery. Although the book is written primarily for widows, any adult woman who wishes to take control of her life would benefit from reading this book. As one widow said after reading the book: "Yours is the only book that truly approaches it from the woman's viewpoint and clarifies what is a mass of strange and threatening terms and tasks.. You have done an important thing in a beautiful way. Thank you from my heart and my checkbook!"

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Widows, Helpful for Widowers.......2007-08-29

"On Your Own" is a well written, very informative book. The authors are able to cover specific financial, legal and emotional issues without being too wordy or losing the average reader in technical jargon. The content is applicable to widows of all ages and financial situations.

I keep multiple copies in my office as gifts for any recently widowed individuals I meet.

                            5 out of 5 stars Widow's Advisor.......2002-03-03

As a financial planner specializing in Wealth Preservation Planning, one aspect of my practice is providing life insurance, when appropriate. As a result, part of my job involves the delivery of death claim checks to widows. Unfortunately, many of them have never had the opportunity to deal with family finances or budgeting - but are suddenly thrown into a situation where they must assume that responsibility. It comes at a time of great instability and disruption.

"On Your Own" by Alexandra Armstrong and Mary R. Donahue deals sensitively with both the emotional and financial issues of widowhood, and provides guidance for both - with compassion and authoritative wisdom. It provides comfort and knowledge in a clever structure which allows the reader to review applications of each chapter's information in one of several optional formats, based upon her individual set of circumstances (young with children, elderly, etc.)

I am so impressed with the book that I give it to each of the beneficiaries to whom I deliver a death claim check. The thank you notes I have received have provided a wonderful reward for sharing this valuable information.

I purchased this book five years ago from Ms. Armstrong at a NAIC Congress in Florida. At the time I purchased it as a reference for my investment club's library. With 21 women in the M & D Investment Club I figured someone would need it sometime. I have skimmed it occasionally through the years but when I recently become widowed it was the first book I brought out. Ms. Armstrong has literally saved me much time and grief in trying to figure out what to do next. There is no time of greater confusion and despair than at the sudden and unexpected loss of a beloved spouse. When I can read this book gives me something to do or think about. The suggestions for organization are excellent and will allow me to make informed descisions instead of emotional decisions. While I did not expect to be the recipient of her wisdom I am grateful for it. I highly recommend it for all women, married, single, divorced or involved in any relationship that has financial involvement. We can't afford to not know how to best proceed with our financial future.

For all who have ever asked "What do I do now?" or "Who can help me with...?" I recommend "On Your Own". Like earlier editions, this is a sensitive and insightful resource for those who have recently experienced (or are preparing to experience) the loss of a spouse. In a highly readable and usable style the authors lead the reader through important topics often thought to be too intimidating or too confusing for someone wrought with fear and sadness.

Even though this book was written with widows in mind I found it a thorougly useful and informative work about investing. I am in my late twenties and have a young child. I found that this book was written in a way that made it accessible to me, as I am new to investing and all things financial! The book really made me understand how I should be planning out my financial future. My understanding was helped by the fact that this book was written by two women; I was able to relate to it on a financial and emotional level.

                                  Book Description

American business buccaneers at their most creative, outrageous! The riveting saga of the rise and fall of a $10 billion Internet travel business created entirely by masterful public relations. In 1999, a mesmerizing serial entrepreneur named Jay Walker, age 44, became the poster boy for the Internet revolution with his deeply flawed priceline.com, described by a former Walker associate as a “travel services flea market.” Denny Hatch's Priceline.com: A Layman's Guide to Manipulating the Media is a rousing tale of corporate high jinks that not only captures the heady euphoria of the Internet boom, but is also a textbook on how to take a company public and totally snooker the media in the process.

Priceline.com: A Layman's Guide To Manipulating The Media by Dennis Hatch is the true story of a dot com entrepreneur's rising business, which reflected the boom and bust of internet-based marketing when its stock (bolstered by a $252 million advertising campaign and the endorsement of William Shatner), peaked at a high of $165 a share before the awful truth was revealed -- priceline.com had never made a profit and lost more than $1 billion. Legions of small investors lost money when the stock was reduced to pennies on the dollar, yet priceline.com's officers, directors, warrant holders, and privileged associates had gained more than $3 billion in insider trades. A shocking, enthralling, and aptly researched tale of the extreme uses and abuses to which masterful marketing and business public relations can be put, Priceline.com is a scathing and documented indictment of the kind of corporate corruption that came to be associated with the excesses of Wall Street during the dot.com "wonder years".
