Book Description
The advent of the twentieth century saw an incredible advance in scientific technology. By the inter-war period of the 1920s and early 1930s cars, planes and radios were a part of everyday life, and science became a popular cult for a new age. Faith in science surged amidst an atmosphere of intellectual and social crisis.
Jo-Anne Pemberton looks in detail at the rhetoric used by the political classes of the time that propagated a vision of a new global unity, and reveals the way in which those same metaphors and imagery are used today in the rhetoric of globalization. Then, as now, the idea of "one world" was challenged by notions of manyness and multiplicity.
Drawing parallels between then and now, "Global Metaphors" reveals how much of the appeal of globalization rhetoric relies on shimmering technological fantasies about the future. Today this also incorporates images of the environment which are used to reinforce the idea of an interconnected world. While this seductive imagery is impelled at one level by the romance of scientific invention, Pemberton reveals the way in which it is also used to cement particular political, economic and cultural interests as universal goods. Arguing that our current debate about globalization is in effect a rerun of the same debate from the inter-war period, she explores why globalist thinking gains currency at particular moments in history, and looks beyond this to the interests, values and cultural biases it belies.
The book explores many similarities between early twentieth century discussions of modernity and late twentieth century debates about post modernity

This book is not recommended........2007-03-04
This book is extremely hard to follow. Unless you are a historian or political science major, it keeps the reader connected to wikepedia. It contains philosophical jargon, creating endless wordiness and mindblowing tedium.

My Store Is Running Thanks to This Book!.......2003-11-05
I was able to use the code in this book right out the box to further my e-commerce development. It was invaluable, and I learned a lot about .Net programming as well. I highly recommend this Book
entry level with very little practical examples.......2003-09-23
This book is e-commerce 101. Pages and pages of unneccessary code examples. Do you really need to see the code for a drop down box with all of the states? I was really hoping for this book to address real-world e-commerce programming issues. State management, multi-level departments, multiple-product photos, various shipping options, etc.
If you have never written an e-commerce web site and you just need a basic shopping cart then this maybe the book for you.
Right Book at the Right Time.......2002-06-20
My company is building an internal procurement site and we needed something we could customize to our needs. Gunderloy and Jerke do an outstanding job of explaining how to build an e-commerce site and provide an excellent set of foundation code.
Thanks guys! Great job.

.NET e-Business Architecture

Book Description
There is currently no book on the market that has a case-study focus and builds e-commerce sites using the new Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Framework. In addition, many of the books that are likely to be released in the near future won't target the intermediate to advanced developer. Building e-commerce Sites describes the steps a developer will take to plan, develop and deploy an actual robust, scalable e-commerce application using the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET. There are detailed descriptions of design choices a developer makes, implementation details. The author's first hand experience will save the reader time and effort. Finally, the development of a working, modern e-commerce site is provided, in this case study approach, along with clear and simple explanations, screenshots, and step-by-step code excerpts.

Customer Reviews:
Great ecommerce introduction... bad code.......2007-10-03
Like others already said, the sample site doesn't work very well. That's why i substract one star from this book. On the other hand, this book introduced me to many concepts about ecommerce sites and how to implement them. You can see what the authors did and then code yourself the solution... you WILL have to even if you do not want to... because like i said before, the site doesn't work at first hand. A must have if you are getting into the web development industry... specially if you are going to work with e-commerce sites.
Book: Unfinished Exercise for the Reader.......2004-05-29
Despite some strengths, this book has a number of problems. It's a shame because it could have been a sterling diamond in the book racks. The code isn't supported by the publisher (see previous reviews) so basically you have to figure out how to get the code to work on your own. There is no example website for the book. One wonders why the publisher and/or authors completely abandoned the project. Another minus is - why did they choose to use strongly typed data sets (being a somewhat advanced .NET topic) to hold data without an adequate explanation of theory beforehand? You'll have to go to other books to get adequate preparation for this topic. On the plus side, this is a fairly advanced e-commerce application similar to what you'll find in the real world. Some of the DB table designs and stored procs are decent. Therefore, studying the code and text will give you some ideas of what you might do in real-world application development. The best description of this book is: "This Book has been left as an unfinished exercise for the reader." But as a complete, comprehensive, finished work this book falls short, and whatever you do, don't buy it new!
Code can be made to work.......2004-03-21
The code was written with a late beta of .NET. It is strange how the code and website have not been updated, but in about 3 hours I was able to get the code to compile and run. There are numerous 3rd party products now with more features than this codeset and cost maybe $99, but if you want to make a go of it, like I said, you can get the code to work.
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!.......2003-12-07
Do not be fooled by the description of this book. It describes features that do not exist...
This book does not contain working code, and the example site has been broken for more than two years, from the date of the first review. There are files missing which are essential for the example code to work. The contact info for the authors is invalid also...
THIS BOOK IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THE PUBLISHER. I have emailed the publisher several times over the last two months, and I have gotten no response. They should not continue to sell this book...
I believe the only positive reviews here are either bogus or based on the positive impression the book gives before you really get into it and discover all of the flaws that make it unusable.
The Code and the Sample Site do NOT work - A USELESS BOOK.......2003-11-26
I bought the book and followed the instructions in the book, unfortunately, like others said that the code does not work. I tried the url listed in the book, but what I got is the error message! The book "Building e-Commerce Sites with the .NET Framework by Jason Bentrum (Author), James Whatley (Author)" is useless.

The only book for Net.Commerce.......2000-03-22
Aside from the offical IBM documentation, this is the only third party book on the IBM Net.Commerce product.
The author is very knowledgable on the product and provides an excellent, must have reference for anyone using Net.Commerce.
I used this book to assist with my studying for the certification and as a result scored very well and feel I have expert level knowledge of the Net.Commerce system.
This book is not for beginner level users, it's designed for intermediate level users, to take full advantage of all the material presented here you should know C++ (at least three chapters cover customizing the Net.Commerce system using C++), you also should know HTML and exposer to IBM's Net.Data is nice (although she does provide a very good tutorial on Net.Data).
Whats next and when.......2000-02-04
We have used this rev of the book extsnsively in our consulting practice. The book has been great to be able to determine functionality that the product can supply and then some examples on implementation. Now.. we are considering purchasing more copies of the book as our business expands around this product. We need to know if and when a new edition will be published that will encompass the new version of the software so we can proceed with more book purchases.
Good Book but not the Software.......2000-02-03
I used this book and the IBM certification guide to prepare and pass the Net.Commerce exam. However, I must point out that the timebomb version of Net.Commerce included can only be installed before year 2000, therefore, you must change your computer time to setup. It takes me 4 whole days to find out this.
An authentic book for IBM e-business product " net.commerce.......1999-08-16
The approach of the book is more like a workshop, with a perfect blend of concept and theory. Since it is about a specific product, net.commerce, from IBM, most of the technical details are given. The workshop exercises lead to a solution of hosting a ecommerce enabled site. The author took the help of experts for certain topics to make it more authentic.
She concentrated on 'HOW to' than 'what is' and for the people who are planning to venture into e-business and want to beome a player in e-business., this book can be guide, to start with.
Samantha Shruety, in her maiden attempt, did extremely well. The book serves the purpose for the people want to become proficient in 'net.commerce'. Also I feel that this book can be used for a third party courseware book for the IBM certifcation of "Planning, Implenting and supporting net.commerce v3 " test #451.
Samantha, is involved in IBM team for the development of documentation for net.commerce and some similarities do exist for the presentation style of online documentation of IBM.
However, some topics are not covered like eTILL, DB2 extender, NC utilities like ncclean, etc. Some topics should have been spared for DB2, though it needs volumes to discuss. Salient points in each chapter should have been given points wise, to attract the attention.
As a whole, every page is valuable and the book offers a valuable source of information on net.commerce V3.0.
Takes you from novice to expert in a matter of days@.......1999-02-23
She did an excellent job of taking me from the basic concepts of e-business through planning, designing, deployment, customization, and management of a store using Net.Commerce.

Too Much Salt & Too Much Sugar.......2005-05-19
This is a very unhealthy story. Too much salt and too much sugar will kill you sooner than later. Campbell Soup Company has many products loaded with salt and sugar. Campbell Soup has a great history in the canning process. However, they have difinitely dropped the ball in this story. They solved the problem of food spoilage by canning, but that is about all.
