    Book Description

Inter-firm relations are not new. But fast developments in technology and globalization have led to increased opportunities for international alliances, and an upsurge in the interest in inter-organizational relations. With the time ripe for a unified theory of collaboration, Inter-firm Collaborations surveys the current field, connects differing perspectives and answers questions about who should collaborate, why, and how.

Emphasizing learning and innovation, this book offers an integrated account of the key issues in the design and management of inter-firm relations and networks. It takes a uniquely interdisciplinary approach, bringing together perspectives from economics, sociology and management to offer a new kind of book on this subject.

Supporting theory, the book includes illustrative case examples taken from a variety of firm, network and industry types.

Coherent and wide-reaching, Inter-firm Collaborations provides students and academics in economics, business, sociology, social psychology and economic geography with the tools required to understand this topical and highly relevant subject.

        Book Description

The focus of this volume is on the myriad dynamics associated with these interorganizational ventures. Emphasis is placed on (1) understanding the nature of these different interorganizational forms and (2) ways to enhance their effectiveness, creating and sustaining complex problem-solving capabilities and collaborative tendencies in a multiorganizational environment. While the orientation of many of the initiatives and interventions in this volume reflects a traditional organization-development (OD) focus, emphasis is placed on working across organizational interfaces, attempting to create the capacity and systemic potential for greater interorganizational learning and performance, rather than releasing human potential solely within an organization (see, e.g., Cummings, 1984). Consultants and researchers in this realm thus focus on spanning organizations, creating and modifying networks of participants that (1) have a stake in particular interorganizational outcomes and (2) depend on those inter-firm relationships and networks to accomplish their goals.

              Book Description

Collaboration of organizations reshapes traditional managerial practices and creates new inter-organizational contexts for strategy, coordination and control, information and knowledge management. Heralded as organizational forms of the future, networks are at the same time fragile and precarious organizational arrangements, which regularly fail. In order to investigate the new realities created by technology-enabled forms of network organizations and to address the emerging managerial challenges, this book introduces an integrative view on inter-firm network management. Centred on a network life cycle perspective, strategic, economic and relational facets of business networking are explored. The network management framework is illustrated onto a broad range of European inter-firm network examples in various industries rendering insights for new management practices.

                Description:
At a conceptual level, the eclectic paradigm of international production has evolved in response to the growth of inter-firm alliances and networks. Yet, there is little empirical research on the nature, extent and compatibility of external network relationships formed at the subsidiary level to support this development. We propose that these relationships may be incorporated into the eclectic paradigm by measuring the extent of quasi-internalisation (transfer) of firm-specific advantages and resources between the subsidiary and local customers, suppliers, and alliance partners. Two distinctive features of this paper are observation of quasi-internalisation via subsidiary-network relationships, and exploration of the complementarity of quasi-internalisation with FDI. The study is based on data concerning 516 foreign subsidiaries headquartered in New Zealand. Our results indicate that quasi-internalisation of resources occurs via external network relationships, and complements FDI by allowing the subsidiary to become an organiser of both internal and external resources.

Far exceeding the author's objective--to present a primer on the state and causes of income inequality in the US-this work by an eminent scholar addresses in masterful fashion the many factors related to these issues in a style comprehensible to both the public and experts. Ryscavage presents not only his own prestigious studies but also summarizes and aluates the major works of others. His study provides a strong bridge over the disconnect between economists' views and popular conceptions that ascribe income inequality to corporate greed, soaring profits, deregulation, waning power of unions, and the demise of the so-called social contract between workers and employers. Instead, the author examines relevant measures showing and causing income disparity. ... A must purchase for economic and public policy collections. All libraries. Choice

                    Book Description

Reduce costs, improve efficiencies, and focus on your core business

The dot-com collapse generally discredited the idea of leveraging the Internet to build viable businesses. Many market pundits have decried the concept without examining the underlying dynamics associated with these companies' failures. The truth is, prior business models were built on a flawed business case, not bad technology. In fact, the dot-com bubble created a whole new class of automation that, when applied to conventional businesses, can dramatically improve time to market, competitive response, and customer interaction. This is not virtual business; this is business process virtualization (BPV), and enterprises that don't grasp and apply the principals of BPV will rapidly be rendered obsolete by those that do, being quickly outmaneuvered and displaced in the market.

BPV is the application of networked, intelligent IT infrastructure to enhance skilled personnel, processes, and assets, which enables companies to improve efficiencies, increase competitive advantage, heighten brand awareness, reduce costs, and improve bottom line revenues. Unlike business process automation, BPV focuses on new management approaches for personnel and technology, signaling a fundamental change in the way that we think about business and its objectives.

While reading The Case for Virtual Business Processes, you will understand why BPV is critical to the long-term viability of your business, while learning how to leverage your intelligent networked infrastructure using leading-edge products and technologies from Cisco Systems.

This volume is in the Network Business Series offered by Cisco Press. Books in this series provide IT executives, decision makers, and networking professionals with pertinent information on today's most important technologies and business strategies.

3 out of 5 stars Review of "The Case for Virtual Business Process".......2004-06-29

The Case for Virtual Business Processes - is an interesting review of the last "cycle" in the world of IT. While the authors make a case for "virtual business process" the text is at its most interesting as it paints a retrospective of what happened during the Dot Com era through interviews with companies that navigated the experience. The arguments are interesting, the case studies are enlightening, and the model is worthy of consideration.

5 out of 5 stars BPV - A Means to Leapfrog the Competition.......2004-05-03

Enterprises that have effective business models are well positioned to execute in the current competitive business landscape. The bursting of the tech bubble to some extent illustrated the point that achieving effective ROI's from IT implementations are no longer driven by just the technology itself. Aligning people, process & technology with the strategic vision of the organization is imperative to succeed.

The book contains a wealth of very timely advice needed by organizations on how technology can become an enabler to business process virtualization. This also falls in line with the current trend within enterprises in maximizing and generating additional value from existing IT investments. The case studies provided in the book provide a wealth of information on how you can achieve competitive edge by breaking the conventional barrier between technology and business.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Pioneering New Book! - A Must Read!.......2004-04-05

"The Case For Virtual Business Processes" is a must read for CEOs, CIOs, IT professionals, and all those interested in the key requirements for successful businesses in these hypercompetitive times! This book transforms information technology discussion from "how and wow" to "why" - linking the power of recent technology capabilities to their logical process transformations.

Replacing processes of a given organization with electronic/information infrastructure (BPV) holds great promise of increased mission, flexibility, and profits. However to successfully implement such strategies one needs to master new disciplines.

Ms. Young and Mr. Jude skillfully lead us through those waters discussing concepts like "incrementalization" and "business process valuation." Their book focuses both on a narrative of key concepts and processes and also shows "this new world in action" through case studies. Overall this book is a pioneering effort that explores new fruitful territory for both IT and Strategic Management. It takes the past concepts such as IT return on investment (ROI) to a new level by shifting them to the strategic next step.

I believe the first companies that implement the concepts in this book will be viewing everyone else in the rear view mirror. I can't wait for more books on this subject!

Microsoft PowerPoint is the standard tool for creating business and technical presentations, and familiarity with it can really bolster your ability to communicate effectively. But you can't rely on the software to organize information or do graphic design for you. Effective Executive's Guide to PowerPoint 2000 distinguishes itself from other PowerPoint tutorials by combining information on how to use the program with advice on structuring presentations and organizing information to meet business goals. The writing seems clunky at times, and sometimes it's hard to visually distinguish general presentation advice (about vocal inflection, for example) from PowerPoint-specific instructions (such as how to animate text), but the overall package of information is worth absorbing.

Authors Stephen Nelson and Michael Buschmohle, after running through some key concepts and terms, outline a complete methodology for creating PowerPoint presentations. It's pretty standard stuff--outline, followed by insertion of graphs and images, followed by special effects--but they back it up with advice on how to speak convincingly and remain poised before a crowd. Text is the primary means of communicating all of this to you, which works fairly well considering the graphic nature of most of the information. Some readers will wish for a more graphical treatment of visual phenomena like transitions, however. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 for people tasked with communicating information to customers and coworkers. Specific instructions appear for using Outline view, inserting tables and pictures, and storing styles as templates for future use. Additional sections deal with presentation strategies.

                          Book Description

Written specifically for busy executives, managers, and other professionals, Effective Executive's Guide to PowerPoint 2000 walks you through the seven steps of creating high-value, high-impact presentations:

Step 1: Learn the Logic. Start here with an overview of what PowerPoint is and how it helps you make better presentations.

Step 2: Outline Your Content. Create a textual list, or outline, of the messages and points you want to share.

Step 3: Add Objects. Use tables, charts, and pictures to augment the information in your outline.

Step 4: Design Your Look. Move past the substance of your presentation and address its appearance and "look" to create a professional presentation.

Step 5: Add Special Effects. Use transitions, animation, sound, and video to enhance your presentation's impact.

Step 6: Prepare Your Presentation. Prepare by creating speaker's notes, rehearsing, producing any handouts, and tailoring your presentation's slides for the presentation method.

Step 7: Deliver Your Presentation. Deliver a successful, memorable presentation to your audience by comfortably using the appropriate PowerPoint tools.

More than just a book about Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Effective Executive's Guide to PowerPoint 2000 explains how to make effective, compelling presentations that audiences understand and remember.

                          1 out of 5 stars Lightweight.......2002-07-22

My goal for purchasing this book was to upgrade my PowerPoint skills, both in format as well as appearance. This book comes short on both accounts. I found this book to be aimed at someone that hasn't used PowerPoint or has little experience. Because this book has such little substance, you're time and money will be better spent perusing and referencing the help tool that comes PowerPoint rather than purchasing this book.

3 out of 5 stars Very little substance.......2002-05-17

I bought this book as it has a catchy name and recommended by some. I expected the book will hold my hand and enable me to prepare killer presentations. Unfortunately, the book assumes that the reader is proficient in other MS Office applications and just glosses over the basic powerpoint menus that one can learn by exploring the application for couple of days. The book does not build any slide from A to Z, and topics have been presented in not so structured fashion. For example, import of charts and tables are discussed before text formatting. However, the book includes few tips for users during oral presentation, which was welcome.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for actually making Powerpoint presentations.......2001-01-05

I've used Powerpoint before but in this book I found several additional practical tips. I especially liked the 2 chapters on actually making the presentation so that you can be more successful as a presenter. I think for most people, this book would be all you needed.

                          5 out of 5 stars PowerPoint: A Powerful Tool.......2000-12-08

The Effective Executive's Guide to PowerPoint 2000 will teach you more than how to create a captivating PowerPoint presentation; it will teach you how to be a good presenter. I was surprised by the how thorough the book was. The book goes through the different features of PowerPoint, such as adding in movies and sounds and adjusting timing, to the strengths and weaknesses of different kinds of charts. In addition the book has a good index to reference different parts of the book later.

5 out of 5 stars Competence and Confidence in a Paperback........2000-10-24

It is refreshing to find a technical book that is usably complete without getting mired in minutiae. The instructions are direct and to the point. I also appreciate the focus on delivering outstanding presentations, not just the technical aspects of the software. I feel far more confident about my presentations than I have before.

Finally...a book that tells the truth about buying a car.

PK Lyle worked in the retail auto world for thirteen long years as a sales representative, sales manager, and finance manager. The information contained in this book is based on her vast knowledge and experiences gained during her career.

She takes you on a journey deep inside this lucrative retail car industry and exposes the real truths and the "secret" secrets that only those working in the industry would know, let alone understand. She also makes a full confession and explains (in every intricate step of the way) how customers get so grossly and unjustly ripped off-especially women.

After reading this book, you'll know how to get the very best deal possible when buying or leasing a new or used car.

Being a woman, I realize that I'm already at a disadvantage when it comes to buying a car. Not that I'm a woman, but that the approach car dealers use towards women and their attitudes towards women are so uncalled for, so disrespectful and so not acceptable. They assume just because I'm a woman that I don't know what I'm doing or that I need the help of a man to buy a car.

Well, thanks to Pique Lyle and her most incredible and informative book, I learned so much about every aspect of buying, leasing, and financing a car. I was able to walk into the dealership showroom and buy my new car with all the dignity and confidense in the world, and tons of amunition to negotiate the best deal ever. Her book was also extremely funny and so easily read and understood... I would recommend this book to everyone who's in the market for a new automobile, male or female.

Thanks again Pique for the best book I've ever bought. I literally saved thousands, thanks to you...

I loved this book! I was very concerned about buying a car. Now I am well informed and prepared to stand my ground. Many of the key points have been mentioned by other auto experts. I do not feel so vulnerable now when I walk into the showroom. This book is must for anyone thinking about a car purchase. I am so glad it has become part of my auto purchasing research library. I now see all the things I did incorrectly last summer when I first glaced at some models. I also laugh about the crap that the saleperson said to me and the stupid questions he asked. I won't be visiting that dealership again. I'll drive by in my pre-owned Grand Am (baby #2 :)) and wave and I will laugh and thank Pique again.

I was in the market for a new vehicle, and even being a guy, I was not 100% sure of what I was going up against with the car dealers. Ms. Lyle's book is informative, entertaining and a MUST read for anyone who is considering buying or leasing a vehicle. I purchased the book, read it completely a few times, and went to the dealership and saved almost $3000! Buy this book!

When someone reccomended the book to me , I thought it would probably not be of any help considering I've purchsed several cars and thought I pretty much thought I had the idea of the whole thing....But Pique's book opens new ideas that I had never even thought of as being a rip off ...the book is definitley worth buying , considering you will learn soo many new things in a clear , light hearted manner ! A car buyer must!

This is one of the most useful "How To" books I've read. As a Certified Financial Planner I am called upon by clients all the time for advice on buying or leasing vehicles. I now either recommend PKs book or loan them my copy. For those of you who are frightened of doing the math that buying a car requires, don't be. PK walks you through clear, easy to follow examples of how to figure out what to offer and how to go about it. And, this is a just plain fun book to read.

                                        Book Description

As the turn of the twentieth century approached, clothing and fashion reflected Americans' concerns with the rapidly changing social and cultural landscape. Clothing helped define social status, relationships between men and women, and ideals of American citizenship. The heightened importance of mass media, especially advertising, during this period set in motion changes in many industries, but most notably in fashion. In Selling Style, Rob Schorman documents the fascinating and important relationship among clothing, gender roles, and cultural expectations at a significant moment in American history.

Men were the first to adopt ready-made clothing en masse, and during this period most wore factory-made suits that were produced in large quantities. In contrast, the acceptance of ready-made apparel in women's fashion lagged far behind, and much clothing for women continued to be custom-made for the individual. Changes in production techniques and consumer markets in part shaped this development in the clothing industry, but according to Schorman the root cause of the schism between men's and women's apparel was culturally driven.

By examining changing styles and attitudes toward fashion as expressed in advertisements, popular magazines, mail-order catalogs, and etiquette books, Selling Style reveals that wider social dynamics and gender roles had a much more significant influence on the clothing industry than historians have found. The book also depicts the advance of consumerism as more piecemeal and conflicted than previous histories imply, with cultural values continually made and remade through everyday acts of consumption, and in the process providing the groundwork for twentieth-century approaches to gender, selfhood, and national identity.

5 out of 5 stars Important connections between consumerism and history.......2004-05-06

Clothing and fashion reflected American concerns with changing social and cultural conditions as the 20th century ended: it defined both status and relationships and involved both sexes in mass media sales. In Selling Style: Clothing And Social Change at the Turn of the Century, Rob Schorman authoritatively documents the evolving relationship between clothing, gender roles and cultural expectations during this time, providing some important connections between consumerism and history.
