Book Description

This study recommends employing "human capital contracts" wherein students agree to pay a percentage of their income over time in exchange for funds to finance their education. The main difference between "human capital contracts" and loans is the variable value of the payments students make during the repayment period. Their financial consequences, of risk transfer from students to investors and increased information regarding future graduates' earnings, make the contracts an attractive alternative in funding higher education.

5 out of 5 stars Immensly inspiring for the future.......2004-05-05

Well, I am slightly biased since the author is a friend of mine, but I'll do my best to be neutral in this review.

This is a very good book that can help us (society) come up with a better way of financing higher education. We should be in a world where anybody capable should be allowed to go to university. Unfortunately, there are so many barriers, and the highest one is probably the financing one, i.e. how to pay for the education we want to receive, and how not to solely depend on the governement to pay for it. This book explains in great details, with lots of supporting data, how the creation of a new type of securities, human capital contracts, can allow us to solve this problem.

It is tremendously inspiring, and should become an essential part of any policy maker's library.

Well done Miguel!!!

    Book Description

The relevance and importance of a study of British policy towards Monetary Union derives from the significance of this policy area to domestic affairs. It is widely acknowledged that successive British governments have been lukewarm to Economic and Monetary Union, but it is less clear as to the reasons for this. Saving the Pound places Britain's negotiating position on monetary union within a wider context of domestic governance. Particular attention is given to policy-making and decision taking within Whitehall, especially the power and influence of the Treasury to shape policy on EMU. FEATURES: clear & authoritative account & analysis of the development of British policy; numerous boxes & tables ; detailed chronologies and key terms throughout; opening and closing chapter sections providing wider ranging reviews of British policy within the wider context of the European Union; the book examines whether a reluctant stance towards policy developments on EMU (and the ERM) has affected British interests within the European Union.

Alasdair Blair is Jean Monnet Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Coventry University. His publications include The Making of Britain's European Foreign Policy (with Anthony Forster, 2002), The Longman Companion to the European Union since 1945 (1999) and Dealing with Europe- Britain and the negotiation of the Maastricht Treaty (1999).

2 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite!.......2002-01-09

This book lacks the detail required to get someone new up and running. The first 2 chapters are the best, but still need a little polishing. The rest of the book is lacking quite a bit of neccessary information so a user can read it and use the concepts.

4 out of 5 stars Real value for beginners.......2001-12-02

This book is a real value for those who want to get started on Oracle with Java. Less pages and enough to digest information. Of course, if you are loking to master Java technologies or Oracle or eCommerce, this not the deal for you. (...)

      1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2001-09-30

Don't even bother about this book. The only thing good about this book is its title. It is a waste of time and money. There are so many good books out there.

      5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2001-03-30

I have read several books about eCommerce development. This is the only book that gave me enough information to understand the various aspects of developing eCommerce applications. The book uses the idea of an application that is developed throughout the book and various issues are dealt with in a logical fashion. Very practical and full of valuable tips. I was able to run all the code (some code had errors but I was easily able to fix them). I am disappointed that some reviews are focussing on a few typos in the book instead of looking at the bigger picture.

      5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed!.......2001-03-30

I have a basically Java background but no Oracle experience. This book helped me in understanding the ways in which I can make use of Oracle technology and my Java knowledge while working on e-Commerce projects. The scalability and performance topics in the book helped me a lot in my current project.

4 out of 5 stars transitioning military help.......2007-08-24

Bradley-Morris, Inc. (BMI) commends Mr. Henderson for endeavoring to assist transitioning military. As the largest military to civilian placement firm, we have found that the most successful military job seekers who utilize our free services are the ones who appear that they are ready to make the transition to the civilian work force in their appearance, speech and dress.

However, we would quibble with this advice: "Stick to the firms that advertise in Army, Navy and Air Force Times..." We believe this advice is out of date. We also believe that no one should pay a fee for job seeker services. There are too many good free services available to military job seekers.

5 out of 5 stars Got results for me!.......2006-04-14

I found Colonel Henderson's book extremely helpful. He has done a great job of finding the methods, the resources, the skills, and the best practices that a person leaving the military needs to ensure his of her landing a great civilian "gig." I could have spent weeks trekking around from office to office - counselors, family service centers, base info sites, etc. - but this book has it all in one place. There were even lots of tips about writing a good, impressive resume - things I never would have thought of. I disagree quite strongly with Cpl. Loveland in his review, which said the opposite - that he could have done the legwork himself and saved a few bucks (the cost of this excellent book).

1 out of 5 stars What a waste of time.......2006-03-04

As a military member about to retire I bought this looking for good advice and maybe to use as a reference. It's a waste of money. You can get the same info at your base family service center (or whatever each branch calls it) for free AND talk to a real person that will help you with questions. Do the leg work and save your cash.

5 out of 5 stars Job Search Marketing your military experience.......2000-08-21

Anyone thinking about leaving the service should read this book at least 18 months before separating, whether leaving after one hitch, or a 20+ year retirement. Mr. Henderson has laid out in a clear, logical manner all the things that must be considered before transitioning into the civilian work force. Most military people simply haven't thought about leaving the service until it is upon them. This book is a "primer". It will get you started in the creation of your own personal transition plan, one that meets your needs. Not a "one size fits all" book by any means, you build your own plan. The book lays out a foundation, the details are your personal choice. In fact, the amount of other sources of important information referenced in the book is one of it most valuable strengths.

5 out of 5 stars Its the most helpful.......2000-05-05

This book is in my view the best out there for anyone separating from the military. This is especially true in light of todays internet use for obtaining employment. In addition, the resume section is clearly excellent. As a retired commander from the Navy I recommend the book without reservation!

          1 out of 5 stars review.......2007-09-17

I was very disappointed by this book. In the gift suggestion section many of the gifts suggested giving things that you needed the recipes from one of her other books. It was disappointing not to have access to all of the information referenced in the book. I also think much of the information was fairly common knowledge. I would not recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars No good tips here.......2005-05-27

I purchased "Frugal Families" because I am already a stay-at-home mom and already have a large family, thus I skipped "Miserly Mom." Based on McCoy's references to "Miserly Mom" in this book, I bought the wrong book. I expected some tips on saving money everyday and instead got tips for decorating for the holidays, buying a car, purchasing insurance and electrical appliances. Not what I thouht I was getting and practically useless to me.

          1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2005-01-05

This book has almost no tips on living frugally. If you are serious about saving money, don't bother with this book and go straight for the Complete Tightwad Gazette. That is a much better use of your money!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta read this!.......2003-09-10

I read all of the reviews posted on this page...even the old ones from 1999. I was hesitant to buy the book based on the few bad reviews, but I loved it! The old reviews must be based on an earlier version. This version I bought is very new. It was packed with helpful information, loads of websites, holiday help ideas, pets, kids, etc. It is WELL worth the price.

          5 out of 5 stars Stress-Free Family with Frugality.......2003-05-18

In true miserly fashion, Jonni McCoy makes saving money a trill and an adventure in Frugal Families.

Whereas Mrs. McCoyýs previous books (Miserly Moms and Miserly Meals) have focused on how a mom or a person can save money, Frugal Families is a compilation of how an entire family can get into a lifestyle of frugality. I especially enjoy this, as itýs easy for one person (the mom) to do what she can to pinch pennies; but itýs refreshing to see that life-long learning and behavior is possible with our children. Additionally, Frugal Families offers an extensive resource collection at the end of each chapter, in case you want to look for more information on various topics.

Jonniýs book is a great inspiration to those of us who do not use coupons. It details ways to save money in practically every manner of family living. Need window treatments? No problem! There is an entire chapter devoted to beautifying your house on a budget. Thinking about taking a family vacation? Make sure you read Chapter Six, complete with toll-free phone numbers and hotel alternatives. There is even a chapter on how you should budget your money, and how to work at paying down your financial obligations so that you can live a debt-free (and stress-free) life! But, donýt stop there! Once you learn how to live more frugally, then you need to read the next section on how to save more of your money and how to invest it wisely.

There are many uncertains in life today, especially with job insecurities, economic recessions and the threats facing the international fronts. But, when you are in control of your money ý and you make living frugally a part of your life, you are able to feel in control of your financial well-being. By doing this, your turn the tables on uncertainty and take your money back into your hands. To do this, make sure you take the time to read Frugal Families, itýll give you many options to taking the stress out of your family finances.

The Zippo Manufacturing Company was founded in 1932 in Bradford by George G. Blaisdell, who designed the first Zippo lighter in 1933; since then, Zippo has produced nearly four hundred million lighters. The product line eventually expanded to include tape measures and pocket knives. Zippo entered the specialty advertising market in 1935, when the Kendall Refinery ordered five hundred lighters that displayed its name. This book is excellent for the true collector who has been at it for a while. It list some old more wanted pieces along with some more recent pieces. I would not reccomend for a new Zippo collector though.

5 out of 5 stars Adding some light to a legend.......2003-11-24

Still a classic after all these years, the Zippo folks keep to the basic rule, don't mess with rightness and success will follow. Endearing classics like the rural mailbox, Duracell batteries or a Stanley knife are simple solutions that stay with us decade after decade. The Zippo company did branch out in Sixties with a new line in table lighters, it was not a success.

This is a typical company history book (produced with their blessing) so don't expected any deep insight. The authors zip through the decades with anecdotes and factoids mixed in with plenty of photos, illustrations, period ads and dozens of pictures of lighters. The design of the book is the main reason I bought it. Strangely, for a conveniently small product, many of the lighters shown are either larger or smaller than the real thing, I would have thought it sensible to keep them all life size.

The company recognises that collectors buy more than thirty percent of sales and they capitalize on this by bringing out annual collections plus specials for any event that seems appropriate. A useful eight pages near the back of the book covers dating your Zippo, with photos of the bottom of the lighter which has a simple coding system.

If you are a collector of this world famous lighter this nice looking little book would be worth buying though I can't see the reason for the hefty price.

              Book Description

More than 700 striking photographs and a detailed text about Zippo cigarette lighters, their history and current values, as well as the Viet Nam War comprise this important new book. It provides not only photographs of authentic and counterfeit Zippos and the factory's own art work, but also a concise outline of the War, lists of U.S. and Vietnamese ship and boat names that did duty in Viet Nam, definitions of naval abbreviations, South Vietnamese waterways and geographic names, Allied in-country units, and a comprehensive dictionary translating important Vietnamese military terms so that old Zippo lighters can be interpreted today. Singularly, this book holds tremendous appeal to an extremely broad audience. Lighter collectors will see a wide variety of rare and common Zippos. Photographers and artists interested in the Viet Nam War and its images will see powerful action photos. Viet Nam War and general military collectors and historians will find factual information organized in a quickly accessible form. Political historians and Sixties and Seventies collectors will find ideas and objects to delight their interests. All will want this unique and striking book for their libraries.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive piece on Viet Nam Zippo lighters.......2002-01-24

The most comprehensive work that I have seen to date on the subject of the ubiquitous war-time cigarette lighter. Mr. Fiorella concentrates on the most popular brand to be carried in Viet Nam, or any war for that matter, the Zippo. Who would think that a niche area of militaria collecting could be so broad with so many variations? From the slim Zippo to the cut-down variety, to Barcroft table models; those engraved in English, or in Vietnamese, carried by Americans, ARVN's, Cambodians, Koreans; Army, Navy varieties and Marines, this author breezes through all of these areas in clear-cut chapters with plenty of example photos and archival images. One of the most interesting chapters is to be found in the beginning of the book, about a subject that is best tackled first: how do you identify knockoffs? This book is worth it for the photos alone and is soon to be a collector's item. The only book you will ever have to own for this hobby.

i've read just about everything on Viet Nam, and this book really is fun! Sort of like Michael Herr's "Dispatches" (with photos). Written in realistic prose and accompanied by hundreds of photo's of Vietnam Zippos, and great in-country shots. Lots of non-boring Vietnam War reference material. i couldn't put it down.

Today interest in lighters has burgeoned, and the vast majority of new lighter collectors are avidly seeking Zippo lighters. This makes the market for Zippo lighters stronger today than ever before. Zippo-mania is not only sweeping the United States, but the world as well. This book is a must for all collectors and lovers of Americana. It contains a sequential history of Zippo series, cases, inserts, fluid cans, flint packages, and sundries. It is richly illustrated in full color with many of the most highly prized Zippo lighters that people collect. Information was based on original Zippo salesman's catalogs, leaflets, advertising brochures, and the study of thousands of Zippo lighters. Prices are provided with each picture, and a complete price guide is located in the back of the book. This is the book the lighter collectors have awaited for years and years.

1 out of 5 stars Very Dissapointed in the 2nd Edition.......2005-09-08

While the 1st edition of David Poores "Bible" of Zippo guides was outstanding his 2nd edition falls short. This would have been a great opportunity to add new pictures, variations and other information, instead what we get is the same old info from the 1st edition with updated pricing.

              5 out of 5 stars ZIPPOS.......2004-03-25

The Bible of Zippo, packed with info, prices out of date, but the information alone is outstanding. Tons of Pics, dating and history of the Zippo. Awesome!

3 out of 5 stars New Edition Needed.......2000-05-01

David Poore's book is the first english-only book to focus entirely on Zippo lighters. It should be on the shelf of every lighter collector. The pictures are well done and the date code explanation appears to be accurate.

However, recent discoveries have rendered the book obsolete, and a new edition is needed that incorporates the new findings. The sections on Metalliques, the Zippo Car, Town & Country artwork, and the Zippo Rule contain incorrect information.

There is little or no information about the rare Canadian, Advertising, or Emblem Zippo lighters. There are also some problems with the structure of the book itself.

For instance, each lighter is given an "access code." However, there is no explanation for what this access code is, nor a frame of reference that ties a given access code in with a corresponding Zippo ID number, resulting in painstakingly compiled information that is confusing and not very helpful. Also, although the section on advertising lighters is very sparse, there are references to "generic advertisers" and "featured advertisers." What is a "featured advertiser?" What is a "generic advertiser?" No explanation for these terms, or for how to determine whether a given lighter is one or the other, creates additional confusion. Several of the captions refer to different values for "featured" versus "generic" advertisers, so this is obviously a correction that is badly needed.

Despite these caveats, David Poore's book deserves to be owned by every collector of tobacciana. I bought two copies of the first edition, and eagerly look forward to a new edition that corrects the flaws of the first.

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive look at an American icon, the Zippo lighter.......1998-12-25

Poore does a first rate job in introducing and detailing the history of the Zippo lighter. The book is very easy to read, great detail is paid to the markings found on the lighters and their inserts. This book has become a bible for novice an expert alike. I find that this book pays dividends time and time again as an invaluable reference tool. More Military and Advertising Logo photos in the future would be well appreciated. I highly endorse David Poore's book as a must have for serious seller and buyer alike in the field of Zippos.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST Zippo book you can buy, ANYWHERE!!.......1998-08-24

David does a great job of describing different "eras" of Zippo, and how you can tell the difference between them. Wonderful illustrations of many wonderful lighters. Only problem I see is that it refers to 1932 Zippos, and it has been proven that production did not start until 1933. In that respect, a new release does need to be made, but still, the best one out there. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!!
