Book Description

Just one generation ago, lawyers dominated Mexico's political elite, and Mexican economists were a relatively powerless group of mostly leftist nationalists. Today, in contrast, the country is famous, or perhaps infamous, for being run by American-trained neoclassical economists. In 1993, the Economist suggested that Mexico had the most economically literate government in the world--a trend that has continued since Mexico's transition to multi-party democracy. To the accompanying fanfare of U.S. politicians and foreign investors, these technocrats embarked on the ambitious program of privatization, deregulation, budget-cutting, and opening to free trade--all in keeping with the prescriptions of mainstream American economics.

This book chronicles the evolution of economic expertise in Mexico over the course of the twentieth century, showing how internationally credentialed experts came to set the agenda for the Mexican economics profession and to dominate Mexican economic policymaking. It also reveals how the familiar language of Mexico's new experts overlays a professional structure that is still alien to most American economists. Sarah Babb mines diverse sources--including Mexican undergraduate theses, historical documents, and personal interviews--to address issues relevant not only to Latin American studies, but also to the sociology of professions, political sociology, economic sociology, and neoinstitutionalist sociology. She demonstrates with skill how peculiarly national circumstances shape what economic experts think and do. At the same time, Babb shows how globalization can erode national systems of economic expertise in developing countries, creating a new class of ''global experts.''

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Scholarship; must read for some.......2002-05-15

Sarah Babb presents a very interesting study of the economic profession in Mexico and the economists who have held the top government positions. It is a must read -of course- for every student in economics, political science and related fields in Mexico. Needless to say, the few who are pursuing graduate studies in economics must look at it carefully.
The book is very well researched and it's well written. The sociological stuff will be tough to read for non-specialists, nevertheless it is worth it. I suspect that the majority of non-sociologists (i.e. economists) reading the book will disagree with Babb's reasons for the growing importance of economists in the mexican government. Read it and get your own conclusions.
Even the plain historical facts are appealing. How UNAM and ITAM competed for the profession in 1950s-1970s and finally ITAM stayed alone at the top. How that school was (and is) a bastion of free-market economics in Mexico and mentor of generations of leaders in their field. And most importantly, why is that not going to change in a while.
Finally, any who aspires to understand recent mexican history and its institutions, will learn a lot from the context of the creation of several of them in the twentieth century.

4 out of 5 stars A low cost way to promote your website online.......2006-03-17

I found this book to be instrumental in helping me to promote my business in a productive way.

3 out of 5 stars Ok if you are beginner.......2006-03-09

This books is long, and you must read every single line if you want to catch the ideas. The ideas take a long time to perform, so you are better off starting with PPC before trying anything in this book. Personally, I prefer Robin Nobles book on Website traffic.

1 out of 5 stars All Sizzle, No Steak!.......2004-12-12

I bought this book after reading so many positive reviews but I'm very disappointed. I found her approach amateurish and lacking in substance.

She comes across as not really knowing her stuff...like one of those people who laughingly tells you how crap at computers they are. She dedicates the book to Chen, who she quotes as saying to her "What, you want to get on the Internet - you??!". If this applies to you too then maybe this is the book for you cause it's so basic.

Her chapters cover such topics as "The Mysterious Modem", "What is the Internet Anyway?" and even "The Benefits of Going Online". Hello??! Considering the reader is reading her book on internet marketing, I don't think she needs to tell us commensense reasons as to why we should go online. And the rest IS just commensense e.g. how to handle hotheadness??!! (just a guess but possibly good customer service, which of course applies in any business), market your website offline and e-mail etiquette.

I can see where she gets most of her positive reviews though - she says on pg. 65 that when she gets fan-email, she thanks the writers for their comments and then asks them to post their comments on an online bookstore such as Amazon and as she says "almost everyone I made this request of did it". Enough said!

3 out of 5 stars Good for proprietors, waste of time for C corporations........2004-06-29

This book has some great ideas for building a customer base from the Internet, but these ideas were quite different from what I was expecting. The $500 in the title is almost entirely derived from web hosting and Internet Service Provider costs.

The book's strategy relies on building your own online community through discussions in USENET newsgroups, email communication, and making your site more interactive with message-board features. This leads to handling customers individually through one-to-one communication. While these ideas can sometimes be effective in generating a few sales, they are very time consuming. I was hoping the book would present tips on a larger scale of deployment, such pay-per-click advertising on other websites. Rather, the strategies in this book would require many hours at the computer talking to online acquaintances.

I recommend this book if you are already an established proprietor and would like to expand your business to the web. In particular, it is geared towards the less tech savvy businessman. However, if you are hoping to find a marketing strategy that does not require many hours at the computer chatting with individual people, this may not be the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Marcia's the Best.......2003-03-28

Marcia's Book - " -- Under $500" is typical of the author. Honest, helpful, and offering informative sources.

Before you read the others, read all of her material. You'll then have the outline and perspective to skim the "others" and pull isolated info to patch into her outline. It won't be long and you'll be on your way to doing what's best for you.

If you are a novice practitioner of financial planning or a new investment advisor you may get a little out of this book. The book is a random compilation of marketing ideas and tidbits that will work for some financial advisors but most of these ideas are basic common sense (marketing and sales 101).

From an organizational standpoint this book is poorly written with no real main point or theme.

If you are an advisor learning to grow your practice there are several other books more worthwhile; put this one at the bottom of the list.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Information.......2006-08-20

I purchased the book on the grounds that I needed information about the hiring process and the steps it takes to gain employment with the FBI. In my opinion there should not be any prep books or material for the job, either you have what it takes to make it or you don't. This book gave me what I needed to know so that I was informed about how hiring decisions were made and what steps the agency takes in selecting candidates. I wish all who purchase this book the best of luck and to just remember that you have to live up to a lot to be part of the FBI.

3 out of 5 stars Great reference, but in need of a revision.......2006-05-30

This book is a wonderful backgrounder on the FBI, its history, and how things work within the agency. The list of field offices and the areas they cover was alone worth the cost of the book. The interview hints were sparce, but very applicable. The problem is the application process has changed in some pretty dramatic ways since this book was published. The FBI now uses on-line applications and the application form has been changed. The needs and focus of the Bureau have also changed since 9/11

Yes, this book was helpful. But if you are interested in applying to the FBI, contact the Applicant Coordinator in your local field office and search the web for a law enforcement employment message board to get the latest news in the world of FBI hiring.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-10-25

Great author, too. I had him as a Criminal Justice professor at Grand Valley State University. He was an adjunct professor there for a couple of years. Very nice, very knowledgeable. This book is a good reference and starting point. Sure, most of the information is available on the Internet, but why go through all the trouble of finding it when it can all be at your fingertips?

1 out of 5 stars Not much info here........2005-09-15

I thought that this would be a good book to help me prepare for the phase 1 testing and what else is to come. Most of the recomendations are just common sense and all of the information was redily available on the internet for free.

We Hope in a future edition, that the author does not forget the path John Douglas (Ret.FBI: BSU) followed to finally arrive at Quantico. Miniture Golf Instructor. Yes now it can be told! Johns career all started at the end; if you will. Yep! at the end of McChord Air Force Base in Parkland Washington. At the venerable "Parkland Mini Putt" miniture golf course. I'll save the details for John himself to fill in, as he's kinda shy about his handicap.

It was very useful for me to see all the agencies listed with their web sites, numbers and typical background/degrees of new hires. This allowed me to narrow my focus. The main weakness for me was not enough info on KSA's, fed resumes and actual interviews. I would recomend this book, but also suggest you pick up another to complement it...

MAKE A NOTE OF THIS, EVERYONE! This book has incorrectly listed the job hotline for the Environmental Protection Agency. They listed the number as #202.260.5055, but the correct listing is #202.418.4320. PLEASE pass the word. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the US resident jobseakers.......1998-11-18

I have read this book and it is excellent. Whatit is light on are recent policy changes, hot openings areas and good definitin of residency exeption, the onsite contractor opportunities and the educational/industrial partnership availablities. It is heartwarming to know even in this harsh erra of trial by fire downsizing in the federal arena, there are still 38000 great jobs in NSA, 5100 PTO positions and 52000 in the Defense Investigative Service. So many openings in high end administrative, tech savy,or secure positions with so few willing and able candidates obsessed with private industry.Too bad there entrance requirements for most mean you'd have to be a fresh college grad, PhD (at 57k and secure US resident) or not have a single mark on your police or financial record. Kinda tight requirements in national security regions these days.

I unresevedly recommend his work and all of his books. They are not only well written but the photograhic content is superb and the locomotive rosters and historical details are very accurate.

5 out of 5 stars Seaboard Steam Rides Again!.......2002-04-04

Indiana University Press recently has been reissuing many out-of-print classics for the railroad afficionado, sometimes referred to as a 'ferroequinologist', who may not have had a chance to obtain a copy of the original and, in many cases, rare, first editions. Without exception these books are all worthwhile additions to any railfan's library. "Seaboard Air Line Railway Steam Boats, Locomotives, and History" is but one of these books, and it offers much of interest to any railroad enthusiast or historian.

The book is a comprehensive history of steam motive power of the Seaboard; if it ran on the rails of the Seaboard or one of its many predecessor companies, it is in this book. Everything anyone would want to know about Seaboard steam is chronicled, from boiler pressure and driving wheel diameter, down to data of the disposition of each locomotive, is preserved in print for posterity. (There is one error; on Page 259 it stated that 0-4-0T No.(3rd) 1001 was placed on exhibition in a park in Columbus, Georgia. Although it had been working in that city until its retirement in 1958, upon its retirement it was given a cosmetic restoration and shipped south on a flat car to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It remains there today, languishing in Holiday Park on the south side of East Sunrise Boulevard, entombed in a cocoon of rusted chain-link fence. Why? It seemed that one of the city bigwigs discovered that the locomotive's boiler was lagged (insulated) with asbestos and it was subsequently 'gift-wrapped' in the belief that this 'preservation' would keep it from becoming a heath hazard. But I digress.) This book has well-writtn text, an abundance of photographs, and locomotive diagrams that are of great value to the historian.

The book does have some shortcomings. Photographic reproduction, while somewhat better than the first edition published by the author in 1966, still leaves somthing to be desired; this may be due to the age of the material. In addition, the work appears to me to be somewhat haphazard in its organization, but then the organizational history of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad itself was no less chaotic.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested in the railroad history in the southeastern United States. Thak you, Indiana Universtity Press, for reissuing this fine volume.
