    Book Description

Deirdre McCloskey is rightly one of the most recognizable names in economics. She views economics as a language that uses all the rhetorical devices of everyday conversation and therefore it should be judged by aesthetic and literary standards and not the criteria of mathematical rigor that is espoused by the mainstream. This controversial standpoint has been hugely influential and this examination of the methodological and philosophical consequences of her work is overdue, and very welcome.

      Book Description

This essential book collects together, for the first time, the writings of Deirdre McCloskey on economic history and the rhetoric of economics. The essays have been presented to show McCloskey's evolution over time: from economist to critic, positivist to postmodernist, conventional economist to feminist economist, man to woman. Measurement and Meaning in Economics allows the reader to experience an astonishing personal and intellectual journey with one of today's most fascinating economists.

McCloskey argues that economics has become ahistorical and narrowly scientific, which is a harmful development for a moral science. In all of the papers presented in this volume she writes with historical consciousness and critical understanding, in an attempt to repair the dysfunctional relationship between economics and the humanities.

This book should be read not only by students and scholars of economic history and philosophy, but by all those concerned with the state of economics and its place in the social sciences.

      Book Description

The author describes in this publcation, the institutional framework of the European Union, the existing currency systems, and provides a review of the Maastricht treaty ratification debates. He used the op-ed of Franco-German finance ministers published in the International Herald Tribune, to relate the desire of the two countries to work on the new currency creation, as well as describing the preparation of corporate France. The events to mark the new change over as reported in national newspapers and the pubic information campaign to turn millions of people into users of the Euro were well narrated.

French Public Opinion And The Transition To The Single Currency System 1981-2002 by Olajide Fashola is a remarkable accounting of the governmental public information campaign and the court of public opinion in modern history as France came to surrender its old currency of French francs and begin using the Euro. An explicitly detailed survey of a most remarkable and transformational shift in French national economics, French Public Opinion And The Transition To The Single Currency System could well serve as a template for similar economic evaluations of other European currencies in their transitions arising from the adoption of a common currency for members of the Economic Union.

4 out of 5 stars I Like the Systematic Approach.......2003-04-16

Like many of us running small businesses, I have no choice but to come up with ads, brochures, press releases, etc. myself. This book gives me a systematic way of doing so, and I credit it with saving me a lot of money in missteps. If you follow the guidelines and checklists carefully, you will probably produce advertising and promotional material that at the very least avoids being amateurish, and will probably sell some products. I like that it concisely gives an overview over each of the areas of advertising and promotion. It explains insider terms without being condescending. Any Gripes? If I could afford the "test" runs of 5000 mailing pieces before I made my "real" mailing of many times that, I wouldn't be reading this book now would I?! But I am probably making excuses for not following their advice on testing advertising, and would be better off if I followed it. The book has been a great help in building my business, and I consult it frequently.

                    Description:
The fragmented nature of the tourism industry requires a substantial degree of coordination and collaboration among the variety of different players in destination marketing. However, the studies on partnerships and collaboration have taken very narrow perspectives of cooperation relationships and therefore, none of them individually can explain the nature of marketing alliances and networks among tourism organizations. Based upon the results of previous research and a case study of Elkhart County, Indiana, this paper proposes a more integrative theoretical framework in an attempt to better describe and explain the nature and dynamism of collaborative destination marketing. The implications of this framework are provided from both practical and theoretical perspectives.

                          Book Description

"Capitation" is a financial term used in the health-care field to describe a contract in which doctors and hospitals are paid a fixed amount each month to care for a population of patients. Humorous and realistic, this innovative book applies the same concept to families, showing parents how to teach teens money management by giving them control of the money they would normally spend on them for school, fees, travel, clothing, and entertainment. Here is a step-by-step plan for guiding parents painlessly through the process of teaching their children financial responsibility: teens sign a contract detailing their responsibilities, and within the parameters of this contract, parents agree not to interfere with their fiscal choices.

Whitcomb's ideas are generally intelligent. He signs contracts with his kids to teach them the value of money and his concept is sound. Learning to be frugal (not wasteful) at an early age makes it much easier to become a successful handler of money in your adult years. My only beef is the author's frequent suggestion that charity comes first. It is much more reasonable to put away part of your earnings as savings first, then live within your means, and finally give to charity, if you are able.

One of the few things about the book I liked was the 4 sample contracts he has presented. The 4 contracts were basic clothing, budget, safe driving and car use.

Some of his ideas I didn't agree with were
He mentioned giving a 9th grader an ATM card
He doesn't say much on how you can teach young children/schoolage kids on how to save money
                          He mentioned giving a 6yr. old a $6.00 a wk. allowance
He mentioned giving a 11th grader a credit card

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT CONCEPT - IF THE CONTRACT HOLDS!.......2001-04-07

Capitate in this book means a contractual arrangement whereby you pay to your child a specific sum of money each month to cover the cost of living that you would normally pay - clothes, food, entertainment, transportation, etc.

In mutual agreement, I actually tried this idea with one of my daughters many years ago, long before this concept was ever printed in a book. The "contract" was for four weeks. By week four, there were no new chic, trendy clothes coming from her favourite shop. While "all the other kids" spent Saturday night at the movies, she pumped up the volume on her stereo, had a stimulating conversation with her dog and the four walls (words which I shall never repeat) and drowned her sorrow in a pint of ice cream! She washed her hair with bubble bath because she ran out of shampoo. The charge to use the washer and dryer was $2, which she no longer had, so she washed her jeans and t-shirt by hand, also in bubble bath...and chipped a nail! About this time, she discovered fruit loops no longer look cute 'cause they float and cease to be comfort food after the the third meal of the day. I would have traded her for Oscar the Grouch in a heartbeat. One month was all it took to learn the value of money. Today, twenty years later, we can still sit down with coffee in hand and share a laugh over all that bubble bath we went through. Tough love, maybe, but a valuable life lesson was learned. Today, she is a married lady with her own personal finances, zero debt and can manage money like a pro.

While not all parents will agree with the approach in "Capitate Your Kids," it is an excellent book based on much the same principle I have just described. The book is a valuable tool in teaching children, especially teens, the value of a dollar and how to manage money - a realistic life lesson that, unfortunately, is not taught in schools.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally well written, and superbly presented.......2001-01-12

Teaching children how to properly deal with money and financial planning is a fundamental parental responsibility. In Capitate Your Kids: Teaching Your Teens Financial Independence is an ideal blueprint for successfully caring out this parental fiscal/educational task. It also has the added benefit of helping to alleviate the financial burden of supporting an adolescent in today's consumer oriented society. "Capitation" mans to contract with a child for a fixed amount each month to care for their needs. Included in this written agreement are teen responsibilities for such things as shopping for the best price and keeping receipts. Parents agree not to interfere with teen choices. If the teen has money left over from the month, then he or she can keep it, saving it toward future purchases. If they run out of money before the end of the month, the must do without -- exactly as adults must in a similar situation. Capitate Your Kids is exceptionally well written, superbly presented, and highly recommended for children needing to acquire financial management skills and disciplines so necessary to succeed throughout life as an adult -- and eventually a parent with children of their own.

5 out of 5 stars Are Corporations antithetical to a Free Market?.......2001-09-12

"The final reason why the United States might convert to capitalism is that Americans are highly sensitive to the flaws of the corporate state, which are many, and powerfully attracted to the moral virtues of capitalism, which are profound"p252.
When I read Weaver's seemingly paradoxical statement above, I viewed it as a puzzling contradiction. Was there not consensus that the American economic system is dominated by capitalism? Why does Weaver say the U.S. might convert to capitalism? When has there been any other economic system in America other than capitalism and what is that? Weaver revealed that it is the corporate state which is that alternative and entirely antithetical to capitalist society.
Weaver, a former professor at Harvard University, related how he came to confront some startling revelations concerning corporations and their relationship to free enterprise only after participant observation at the Ford Motor Company. After becoming an insider, Weaver learned how corporations really work:
"Corporatism accepts private ownership of business but sees economic life as a mainly institutional activity that occurs under a bureaucratic supervision rather than in a free marketplace. It likes oligopoly and mistrusts competition. It accepts representative democracy but sees political life as a process dominated by economic, ethnic, and other interest groups rather than with individual citizens...What I witnessed at Ford was corporatism up close and personal - the doctrine of raw business advantage as seen from the viewpoint of the intended beneficiary". p183
There is nothing else on the subject of corporations fronting behind the rhetoric of the free market with this ethnographic richness. Weaver uses rich ethnographic material and careful analysis to craft a clear picture of the anti-capitalist corporation. This book is equally revealing of the origins and history of the corporation - it is theoretically a creature of the state and therefore behaves like a bureaucracy rather than a market organization. In short, government and their corporations are the problem. Free enterprise is the solution.
This book belongs on the shelf with Berliner and Biddle's "The Manufactured Crisis" and Miller's "Capitalism: An Ethnographic Approach".
