Book Description
Co-integration, equilibrium and equilibrium correction are key concepts in modern applications of econometrics to real world problems. This book provides direction and guidance to the now vast literature facing students and graduate economists. Econometric theory is linked to practical issues such as how to identify equilibrium relationships, how to deal with structural breaks associated with regime changes and what to do when variables are of different orders of integration.

Book Description
In recent years many countries have liberalized their financial markets as a central element of their efforts to reform their economies and increase their economic growth rates. Financial deregulation leads to a fundamental restructuring of a country's economy and polity, as market forces, not state officials, begin to determine who obtains financial resources and at what cost. A critical question is whether countries can undertake a program of liberalization while undergoing democratic transformation. In this study, Arvid John Lukauskas explores why governments tightly regulate their country's financial system and why they choose to liberalize it.
Using a rational choice approach, Lukauskas contends that public officials provide the dynamic behind the evolution of financial regulation as they seek to retain power and generate public revenue. Lukauskas argues that the nature of a country's political institutions shape the incentives facing politicians and influence whether they seek to regulate closely or liberalize financial markets in the pursuit of their goals. Lukauskas then tests his ideas in an in-depth case study of the evolution of financial policy in Spain, a country that transformed its financial system into a mostly market-based system after years of heavy state intervention, while undergoing a transformation from a dictatorship to a democracy. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that leaders will not undertake structural change during periods of democratization, he finds that leaders in Spain undertook financial liberalization despite opposition from powerful groups, because democratization gave Spanish leaders a strong incentive to improve economic performance through financial reform in order to compete for votes.
This book will be of interest to political scientists and economists interested in studying financial markets and the effects of regime change, including democratization, on economic reform.
Arvid John Lukauskas is Assistant Professor of Political Science, Columbia University.

From the supplier: Field theory is advanced as a research tool for describing the management and resource allocation decisions made by owners-managers of small family businesses. Unlike other research methods, field theory takes into account the conflicting demands of family and business objectives in examining the behavior of small business owner-managers. The method is supported by information gathered from a mail survey of 902 entrepreneurs.

The Writing Teacher's Sourcebook

Book Description
Thirteen Weeks, refers, with ironic intent, to the typical first semester college writing course, to the fanciful belief and expectation that students who are non-writers can become writers if they take the thirteen-week cure.
Customer Reviews:
An Inspiring, Thoughtful Approach to Writing Instruction.......2000-09-19
Though the book is nearly ten years old, Irvin Hashimoto's earnest effort to get teachers to "think about what they're doing" still gives teachers and future teachers alike plenty to think about. He is a well-credentialed, highly experienced writing instructor who, after trying some of the trendy approaches to teaching writing that were pressed upon eager instructors in the seventies and eighties, found that simplicity was the easiest route to competence, especially considering the time constraints of a typical semester or quarter. After some well-argued advice on dropping the familiar "formula" approaches to writing, Hashimoto offers examples of lesson plans and specific assignments that are designed to focus on the main areas of difficulty without forcing the students into a blanket formulaic progression. At times it is difficult, and for the novice somewhat tedious, to wade through Hashimoto's copious examples of assignments and student compositions, as well as his notes on how to improve the latter. Fortunately, each section and chapter contains a pleasantly concise introduction and conclusion that help refocus attention on what is Hashimoto's, and the typical reader's, main goal: to guide students through the process of developing their skills as effective academic writers. Thirteen Weeks is inspiring and earnest, but also loaded with Hashimoto's zany humor. Are you coordinated enough to laugh and think at the same time?
Rethinking the First Year College Composition Course.......2000-09-18
Irvin Hahimoto, author of numerous articles on issues related to composition as well as "Strategies for Academic Writing: A Guide for College Students," has written a realistic and comprehensive guide to teaching college writing. Hashimoto's main premise is that composition teachers must be realistic about what goals are possible in the thirteen weeks that comprises the typical first year college composition course. He is adamant that instructors cannot teach things like taste, cretivity or the infamous "voice". Even things like audience analysis or prewriting can be difficult to have students master in just thirteen weeks. Hashimoto believes though, that there are some "simple things" that composition teachers should pass onto students in the time alotted to them. His goals are simple: ...to teach students a few ways to deal with other people's ideas, a few ways to deal with simple data, a few ways to argue a simple point, and...get them to play with a few ideas about style (21).
The rest of the book goes on to specifics as to just how Hashimoto does this. Not only does he provide sample in-class exercises to teach concepts like thesis statements and parallelism but he encourages educators to think about the reasoning behind any assignment they give a class-whatever it is they choose to do. He even thinks teachers should do some of the assignments. Hashimoto espouses having students do lots of writing assignments for maximum writing practice and encourages students to take risks with their writing. Taking risks is a difficult thing for many students to do because they often want to give teachers the "right" answer. Hashimoto counters this by giving students assignments based on pieces of writing that don't carry the associations of great literature with them. Most of his examples are humorous and odd-but they certainly would let a students use her imagination and think for herself. Hashimoto has written a very readable and useful guide for people who teach writing or are thinking about teaching writing. He remains practical as what can really be done in a first year composition course, taking a lot of pressure off teachers. His approach is fresh and humorous and well thought out. There is also a wealth of examples and inspiration for assignments and exercises in his appendices. Also included are places to find some of the obscure material for writing assignments that he is so fond of. (Ever hear of the moral poet Martin Farquhar Tupper?) This is a must read for anyone interested in re-thinking the college composition course.

Book Description
`This is a wide-ranging, careful use of economic analysis to shed light on an important environmental problem. Its value stems not only from its contribution to the specific policy issue it addresses, but also as a broader illustration of how good economic research can inform policy. Readers will be rewarded with a host of intriguing (and sometimes provocative) new insights.'
- From the foreword by Tom Tietenberg, Colby College, Maine
The market for residential solid waste management and disposal has experienced dramatic changes over the past 20 years. This collection of outstanding published research examines these changes and thoroughly analyzes the strategies popularized by municipal governments over the past two decades.
Curbside recycling, unheard of in the 1970s, is currently available to 46% of Americans. Thousands of towns across the nation have also implemented user fees requiring households to pay a fee for every bag of garbage they generate. These policy shifts have attracted the attention of environmental economists interested in knowing the best strategy for managing solid waste. The editors, both long-time scholars of these trends, offer theoretical solutions for the optimal pricing of garbage and recycling collection. They provide original data collection and suggest appropriate econometric techniques that correct for statistical biases. A policy focus provides information relevant to municipal governments as well as researchers.
This excellent volume will be useful for policymakers, students and scholars in environmental economics.
