    Book Description

Financial services with global reach are becoming ever more important in the conduct and organization of the trade and investment of nations, and currencies that lack international standing lose out in this business. The result of financial development has been destabilizing currency and portfolio substitution -- in favour of international currencies and against local ones. This book analyses formal approaches to overcoming monetary divisions within countries and within integrating regions, focusing on the consequences of monetary union for trade among union members and their financial development and stability. The authors discuss hard pegs such as those attempted by the currency board of Argentina, outright dollarization, such as in Ecuador, and multilateral monetary union, as in Europe, the least reversible form of monetary union and the most powerful elixir of financial integration and trade. The political classes and central banks in most countries have been reluctant to admit the market- and technology-driven forces of currency consolidation, much less yield to them. International financial institutions too are still in the habit of proffering advice about national monetary and exchange-rate policies on the assumption that getting rid of both is not even an option. Emerging-market countries, in particular, have to choose between retaining what independent monetary means they still have -- and can safely use in the presence of widespread liability dollarization and currency mismatches -- and formally replacing the domestic with an international currency to reduce exposure to debilitating financial crises. In concrete investigations of this choice, this volume shows that monetary union deserves a much more sympathetic hearing.

    Book Description

A world leader in philanthropy (and father of the planet's wealthiest man) and an expert on U.S. economic inequality (and heir of Oscar Mayer) on the'billionaire backlash' A world leader in philanthropy (and father of the planet's wealthiest man) and an expert on U.S. economic inequality (and heir of Oscar Mayer) on the'billionaire backlash' The'Man Bites Dog' story of over 1,000 highnet- worth individuals who rose up to protest the repeal of the estate tax made headlines everywhere last year. Central to the organization of what Newsweek tagged the 'billionaire backlash' were two visionaries: Bill Gates, Sr., cochair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest foundation on earth, and Chuck Collins, cofounder of United for a Fair Economy and Responsible Wealth, and the great-grandson of meat packer Oscar Mayer who gave away his substantial inheritance at the age of twenty-six. Gates and Collins argue that individual wealth is a product not only of hard work and smart choices but of the society that provides the fertile soil for success. They don't subscribe to the'Great Man' theory of wealth creation but contend that society's investments, such as economic development, education, health care, and property rights protection, all contribute to any individual's good fortune. With the repeal proposed by the Bush administration, we might be facing the future that Teddy Roosevelt feared-where huge fortunes amassed and untaxed would evolve into a dangerous and permanent aristocracy. Repeal would drop federal revenues $294 billion in the first 10 years; 27 some $750 billion would be lost in the second decade, not to mention that the U.S. Treasury estimates that charitable contributions would drop by $6 billion a year.

I had to read this book for a political science class I was taking over the summer, and I am glad the professor chose this book because I learned a lot about the estate/death tax. This book puts everything into prospective, and explains the pros and cons of the tax. If your interested on how the estate tax works and why we need it read this book.

This review is excellent but I believe that those of us who live in Turtle Island will develop unified systematic responses only when we begin to honour the heritage of First Nations. The common wealth of First Nations was brought about through inclusive and comprehensive accounting practices, which valorized the contributions of all community members. This primary accounting including women's and social work took place in the Production Societies of each community. This accounting unified ownership for all members of the Production Societies. Wampum and other string currencies were issued across the 36 Confederacies of Turtle Island. People not only voted with their Wampum but spent it as currency as well. Ownership was progressive from the early status of an apprentice to the weighted Wampum 'share' holdings of the elder. What is missing in our capitalist and socialist worlds is their unity. Both systems hold part of the puzzle. Both developed as institutional fragments of a once integrated whole. The wonderful thing being that First Nations still hold many clues to understand this ancient system from aroung the world. You can imagine the difference between a whole culture of economic justice and merely a complaint department in a crooked department store. While Gates and Collins book is essential, it is through cultural indigenous economic design that we gain the involvement to make a difference. Western authors tend to keep us in critical analysis but still divided. Douglas Jack, eco-montreal@mcgill.ca (514) 695-3845

This extraordinary little book packs a gigantic punch. I'd love to summarize it here, but as soon as you buy the book, get straight to Chapter One. It's enough to make you sick in the stomach.

Is America a "democracy"? After Ch.1 you really wonder. A sample from p. 15: Around the turn of the century, shortly before WWI, the top 1 (one) per cent of the population owned 56.4% of the country's private wealth - at the same time, the authors tell us, "the wealthiest 10 [ten] per cent of households owned 90% of all wealth." Now, think about it: 90% of Americans together owned a mere 10% of the country! (And most of the country's wealth was in private hands, because the government at all levels owned very little of value. There wasn't even a national park in existence!) That's neither justice nor democracy.

American society started to improve since then, especially after the introduction of income tax. But things have again gone in the opposite direction in the last two decades, so that "the United States is now the most unequal society in the industrialized world." (p. 14)

This fact is borne out in the UN Human Development Report 2002. (I was surprised that this authoritative publication is NOT cited anywhere in this book.) This report gives the "Gini Index" for each country, among numerous other data. The Gini Index is not something out of Aladdin: It "measures inequality over the entire distribution of income or consumption. A value of 0 represents perfect equality, and a value of 100 perfect inequality." (p. 197) Ranked are these selected countries in the industrialized world: Denmark (24.7 - the least unequal society), Japan (24.8), other Scandinavian countries (including Finland) at around 26, then Germany (30.0), then English-speaking countries like my own Canada (31.5 - the lowest in this group), Australia (35.2 !!), the UK (36.8 - hardly news, what with their queen and lords), and finally the United States at 40.8. (France, the host of the French Revolution, is a surprising 32.7.) For comparison, developing China is 40.3 (beats the US by a hair - but not for long), India only 37.8 (I guess only a couple of people can be called rich there), and Russia is the most unequal of all at 48.7.....but then Russia is now run by a mafia of ruthless moneylords, much like America a century ago, when men like Rockefeller and Al Capone ran all the shows. (Still it is better than the gulag and secret police. And anything is better than communism.)

Getting rid of the estate tax won't help one bit. On the other hand, not repealing it in and of itself is just a small step in the right direction, hardly enough to stop the country from sliding down the slippery slope to a second Gilded Age. This book makes a very convincing argument why getting rid of the estate tax is truly a form of insanity the name of which is still not in the psychiatric textbooks. Bill Gates Sr.'s position is supported by his son (the world's richest man - mostly self-made). Warren Buffett, the world's second richest man (also self-made), disagrees with them only because he thinks the estate tax as it is does not go far enough. (He'd prefer to tax 100% of the super-rich's inheritance not given to charity.) This estate tax is absolutely, undoubtedly no "death tax" - as though everyone has to pay it, even the poor. Rather, it is really just "rich kids' tax"! Let's start calling the thing by its right name.

Andrew Carnegie is frequently quoted in this book, for good reasons. This mega-hero of the Gilded Age, who rose from abject poverty in a foreign country to become the richest man on earth, literally built America - with the steel from his furnaces, used in railroads and highrise buildings. He went even further than Buffett: "Any rich man [or woman, I assume] who doesn't give away his money to charity BEFORE he dies is a shame and a disgrace to society," as he said over and over. Carnegie certainly practised what he preached. (Before he died he gave away at least 95% of his worth, mostly to create free libraries for people too poor to have books.) Carnegie also believed in the estate tax: "Of all taxes this seems the wisest," in a memorable quote in this fine book.

At a time when many Americans worry about losing their jobs, when every citizen pays for the defense of the country, this is no time for the estate tax repeal - just so that the Forbes zillionaires own and control even more of the country while the rest have nothing or next to nothing. The supremely selfish, extremely greedy, totally irresponsible, unbelievably small-minded and short-sighted people who oppose the estate tax - and therefore dislike this book - hate and despise their fellow Americans more, and do more long term damage to America, than any Middle East terrorists because this kind of injustice (in Buffett's choice word) was what caused the downfall of Rome and is still yet another reason which encourages neo-Marxists everywhere.

This book is densely argued and extremely clearly presented. The 24 pages of sources in this slim little volume show the authors have done their homework, despite the omission I mentioned. Bill Gates Sr.'s authority is undeniable not only because he was already wealthy himself BEFORE his son became the world's richest human being (for at least the past ten years as far as I know), but also because he is himself a highly successful tax lawyer and in charge of one of the world's largest charitable foundations, the Gates Foundation. (One day it will be the world's largest.) If he doesn't know what he is talking about, I don't know who does. This book's Foreword is aptly written by the formidable Paul Volcker, former Fed Chairman.

I can't praise this book enough. It can go further though, as the public and private statements by Warren Buffett - a good friend of both Gates' - explain clearly why. Despite its admirable conciseness, this book can use a good general index at the end. (I want to be sure who said what when and why.)

5 out of 5 stars Must Reading for Every Member of Congress.......2003-04-06

Most controversial issues have two sides. The authors of this book present the arguments in favor of abolishing the estate tax in "the best light" by quoting at length and in context the abolition proponents' rationale. They then destroy these arguments by showing how and why they are based on false and often misleading "facts." They also make the case as to why an estate tax on those few accumulated fortunes which are, even under the pre-2001 law, subject to the tax is an important foundation stone of the American Experiment. I am not naive enough to believe that those who have made a career of opposing the estate tax will be swayed by the authors' book, but anyone with an open mind should be.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant. A must read for those who care about the USA........2003-02-15

This brief book strongly explains how society will benefit from keeping an estate tax on the wealthy. It explains how the estate tax allows America to be a meritocratic place where the best and brightest rise to the top and can make the most positive social change. It explains how charity giving will increase during wealthy individual's lifetimes if they know they face a big tax at the end. It gives a brief history of the estate tax and why it was introduced in the first place. It exposes the hypocrisy of Bush's estate tax repeal that expires in 2010. All in all, it provides a very concise argument why we must give back to the society which enabled us to have the potential to become wealthy in the first place. I never thought I'd be able to read through a book on tax law without putting it down. This book is brilliant.

The book starts out nicely explaining everything and it gets you motivated. From chapter 3 onwards, 19 pages later, its all guess work. He gives pieces of information with no coherent example that shows how all these pieces fit together. Its left up to your imagination to guess how it all comes together. Once more, I had to go back to internet tutorials (which I have found to be way better than a lot of computer programming books). XML is not rocket science. If you can't write a descent book about it, you ought to think about quiting the writing profession (stick to writing code). This was a waste of my time and money; needless to say a waste of paper and ink too.

3 out of 5 stars Starts strong, then fades into incomprehension.......2003-06-18

Could have been good or even great. It starts clear, correct, and well-structured. Then about a third of the way through the book (which is really half the content because the last third is an absolete printing of the XML spec) the writing gets lazy. Comprehending the material becomes an absolute chore as all structure is lost.

The first part is the best intro to XML that I've read, but it's just an intro.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2002-05-01

This book is a really good basic book to get started. I've enjoyed it.

                3 out of 5 stars Not a tutorial, but a great reference........2002-03-29

I'm an ASP developer with just over a year's experience. This is the first book I've read on XML, and if I have a question, it will be the first place I look.

This book has it all, except solid examples that tie it all together. I now understand how vast and capable XML is, but I haven't gained an ability to put it to any real practical use.

                Items I don't agree with:
                1. The book is not 500 pages ...Page 223 marks the start of Appendix A, the XML 1.0 specification. The index ends on page 345. 122 pages of reference (over 33%).
                2. The book's cover states I will learn to build web applications fast. Huh? There are no sample applications, only examples of how to use the syntax being discussed.
                3. The cover states that I will learn by doing, as I work on a fictional e-commerce site. Huh? There are no exercises, and there is no e-commerce site being built.
                4. The cover refers to real-scenarios. Again, where are they?
                5. A chapter titled, "Common Examples of XML", was really an introduction to SMIL, SVG, and WDDX. Good stuff, but not what I was expecting.

This book needs a companion to deliver all that's been promised. I still don't have a clear picture of the XML DOM, the difference between a node and an element, nor do I have an idea of where I should be using XML (instead of (or with) the technologies I'm already familiar with (i.e. ASP, ADO, and JavaScript)).

Considering how the other reviews have labeled this book #1, is there any hope? Can anyone recommend a book that's better at painting the big picture?

4 out of 5 stars Best I have read so far..........2002-02-07

This important and timely book is written to help senior medical students and doctors in training become more competent in dealing with difficult areas of communication. The author covers the main areas where communication must take place effectively, both in normal interview situations as well as difficult scenarios that students/doctors are likely to encounter. These include breaking bad news, interviewing potentially suicidal patients and handling anger and hopelessness as well as patient grief. Practical advice is given on how to improve technique as well as how to leave patients feeling understood and satisfied whilst surviving emotionally at the same time.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for teens.......2005-08-27

This book is packed full with info with teens. Though at some time it seems focused on the obvious (different kinds of jobs) If you're a teen looking for work, check it out.

I got this book from the library, and I'm glad I did. This book provides helpful descriptions and ideas of jobs, but it didn't provide the information I wanted on how to obtain them. It provides several website links, most of them completely useless. The tips for resume writing were helpful though. Basically, it spends the first 20 pages convincing you that you want a job, about 100 pages listing types of jobs and what's involved for them, and the last 100 talk about resumes, interviews, and applications. The interview tips are simple like "Don't wear gobs of makeup", no big secrets or really helpful info. To conclude, the book is worth a glance, but the library already paid for it, there's no reason for you to.

Outsiders have long suspected that Wall Street is nothing more than a real-life Disneyland, where dreams are made and hopes are dashed with the speed of light and the randomness of lightning. By chronicling the rarely publicized, behind-the-scenes reality of some of its most incredible incidents and personalities, CNBC senior anchor Ron Insana brings this perception to life in Traders' Tales: A Chronicle of Wall Street Myths, Legends and Outright Lies. Read this collection of stories about the men and women who have won big and lost bigger, and never think about traders and their lives in the same way again.

                          Acclaim for Trader's Tales

"I have rarely gone through a day without hearing a joke about Wall Street. Ron Insana captures the essence of the culture that creates those jokes with one hilarious tale after another. This book is great fun." -Stanley Druckenmiller Managing Director, Soros Fund Management.

"Ribald tales and outrageous jokes are as much a part of Wall Street as subordinated debentures, and Ron Insana has sifted through years of financial lore to collect the best of them. A funny, funny book, certain to draw a chuckle and a wry smile of recognition from even the stiffest Masters of the Universe." -Bryan Burrough Coauthor, Barbarians at the Gate.

"You can't beat Wall Street for witty and outrageous behavior. Ron Insana captures it." -Michael Steinhardt Managing Partner, Steinhardt Partners.

"Having worked on Wall Street for 20 years, I thought I had heard and seen it all. The secrets revealed in this book, however, are absolutely shocking." -Elaine Garzarelli Director, Garzarelli Capital, Inc.

"Wall Street has lots of traders' tales which bring us insight into the lighter side of our business. This book should bring fun for us all." -Mario Gabelli Chairman, Gabelli Funds, Inc.

5 out of 5 stars rate the book on what it really is--a storybook.......2003-08-21

I can't understand why this book gets so many bad reviews. This book is not a book of interviews, a book on fundamental or technical analysis, a book about Warren Buffet or Peter Lynch's investing styles, or a book about timing the market. This is a storybook, plain and simple. And it is a good one at that. Because I'm very interested in the market I purchased this book expecting exactly what I got. Tongue-in-cheek stories from the trading floor. And despite what other reviewers say, there is plenty to be learned from this work. The section about Donald Trump getting sued was great. The Donald got exactly, just exactly, what he deserved. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the market from a personal and less technical perspective. I was tempted to forgo purchasing this book altogether after reading it's miserable reviews. But because I consider myself a contrarian investor, I thought what the hey and bought the book. And I'm glad I did.

                          2 out of 5 stars Stories aren't interesting (what's so incredible?).......2003-02-17

Ron Insana is a fine CNBC commentator who has been instrumental in turning what had long been characterized as dry news for a select few into witty and insightful stock market reporting with mass market appeal. His first book, "Traders' Tales" tries to wow the reader with a bunch of gee-whiz stories, but there's just not much to impress in the way of secrets, outrage, shock value . . . whatever.

After being involved with the stock market for twenty years (the last fifteen as a professional), and thus being familiar with many names of those involved in the stories recounted by Mr. Insana, I still didn't find any story "tantalizing" or "shocking." Heck, anyone who's ever played on a sports team or in a rock 'n' roll band during high school could probably come up with ten crazier stories for every one in this book. Instead, I thought the more interesting reading was in the chapters that gave historical perspective to the careers of Muriel Siebert, Ron Baron, Peter Lynch, and Jimmy Rogers, among others. Everything else was pretty dull.

There's a tad too much explaining about market movement, stock/option price fluctuation, trading floor characteristics (did you know that tons of money can be made or lost very rapidly?), chart patterns, etc., so I'm thinking that those familiar with stock and bond investing might wind up somewhat bored. Keep in mind, Mr. Insana was writing this in late-1995, way before many new investors were "seasoned" by the boom/bust in tech stocks, so some consideration of the time frame is warranted.

Overall, "Traders' Tales" might have mild appeal either to someone who has no experience with the stock markets, or to investors who might want to learn what all the market gurus we follow were doing decades ago.

                          1 out of 5 stars A half-hearted attempt at best.......2001-11-28

What looked to be a promising collection of tales from the street fizzled almost from the start. Fairly lame stories, told with almost no writing style or flair whatsoever. And to top it all off, no appearance of editing at all. References made to "Truman winning the election of 1946" (he beat Dewey in '48) and "Home Depot, the home office supply store" (that would be Office Depot). I felt ripped off, and I got it from the Library! Save your money and re-read Liar's Poker or A Piece of the Action.

1 out of 5 stars It's not interesting, nor funny, nor a book of tales, nor.........2001-06-25

I had been misled by the "advance acclaim" for the author by Stanley Druckenmiller and Michael Steinhardt. I really doubt whether they had finished the book at all. The book is so boring and full of dull short stories of a mixed variety that takes you nowhere and gives you no fun nor knowledge. Even worse, the story telling skill is really bad. In a word, dont waste your time and money on it.

                          1 out of 5 stars Just a bad book.......2001-05-25

The book is of little value to anyone whether you are a professional investor or an amateur. Most of the stories are bland and simply not funny nor do they provide any insight whatsoever into the world of Wall Street. Bottom line: don't waste your time and money on this book.
