I absolutely agree with the surprise of the previous reviewer.
I bought this from amazon.com in the mid-nineties and there were rave reviews even then. Maybe they were removed, somehow.

George Gilder, for all his wrong predictions and over enthusiastic boom time prophesies, really shines with this one.
He is such a good analyst and narrator of past events and their lessons - maybe he should keep there and not try to predict the future.

On the dullest of days, this book can uplift your spirits and infuse a feeling of positivity and optimism that I can hardly describe. The last chapter (Dynamics of Entrepreneurship) alone is worth ten times the weight of the book in gold. If you have ever attempted to create any type of change in the society around you (including starting a business), this book will bless you with a self-awareness and sense of destiny that you will cherish for a long, long time.

It is 12 years since the book has been out, I think it is time for George Gilder to write another update. This time with the heroic entrepreneurial stories from emerging markets like Taiwan, Korea, China and India.

If you're a George Gilder enthusiast and have not yet read the Spirit of Enterprise, then you'll want to do so. If you've never read Gilder and would like an introduction, likewise, this is the book to try. I've read several though not all of Gilder's books, and "Spirit of Enterprise" entralled and educated me, even more than Gilder's other great books. While I enjoyed "Wealth and Poverty" and Gilder's writings on technology, this book, which is about entrepreneuers and their inestimable value in our society, is simultaneously less demanding on the reader, and more engrossing. Read about an Idaho lad who went contrarian, took risk, worked his tail off, revolutionized commercial agriculture, and then, incredibly, seeded one of America's best technology companies. Gilder's enjoyment of such tales is palpable. His explanation of their relevance is erudite. The book is a pleasure, one of the best I've ever read.

First off, I'm shocked that no one has yet reviewed this book here. For those Gilder fans out there you know George's inimitable style of erudite and hip prose. He doesn't disappoint in this volume. So what's it about? It's about the determination of individuals to succeed. It's about people who fail, and fail and fail again but don't give up. Some of the stories he tells are almost beyond belief. The story of the Canadian geologist (I don't remember the name--it's been 21/2 yrs since I read it) frankly inspired me. The chapter on Cuban immigrants to Miami should, if there was any justice, be anthologized widely. The story of the founding of the Honda Corporation stunned me. Gilder's book made me take a hard look at my assumptions about what causes success in the business world.

      This is a Flash book that focuses on specific projects the author has been involved in. There are only six such projects covered. They include,
      - a product demo
      - an interactive holiday card
      - two web sites done in Flash
      - LEGO game
      - Furniture.com's Room Planner

      Even though the book promises source code on the CD, the Room Planner project relies heavily on ASP/database backend and they DO NOT include this code. The result is that the Flash source included for Room Planner will not work.

      When someone from our firm asked the author about this he replied that his former employer owns that code and would not allow it to be published.

      You can still learn from the Flash source code but its value is a whole lot less because you cannot see the application working. And, given that Furniture.com is now out of business you cannot see the application in action there either!

      Our main reason for this review is to simply alert others BEFORE they buy this book about the missing source code. If this is not an issue for you this book may benefit you. In our case, we purchased the book to learn from the Room Planner source code so the book has little value to us.

      Breaking the mold of the how-to and step-by-step approach this book looks at the business side of building a succesful Flash project. It's refreshing to hear why decisions were made, because of budget limitations, difficult clients or looming deadlines. This book is an excellent read, is well written and offers a realistic look at the many challenges Flash developers face besides the technology. An excellent addition to my library!

              This book was used in a class my senior year of college. It proved to be very helpful, and even now 6 years and 3 jobs later I still find myself using it as a guide. I'm not sure if it's been updated since 1996, so it may be missing some of the web and email tips, but it's still the best solid advice I've seen in all my searching for job books.

                "If you intend to execute a particular market research project yourself, you will certainly need to read more than this book - for the sake of brevity, this book won't go into a great deal of depth on any single technique, but will merely open the toolbox and explain its contents and application," states author Edward F. McQuarrie, who clearly sums up the purpose of this book in the preface.

                This book gives a clear overview of different types of market research (secondary research, customer visits, focus groups, survey research, choice modeling, and experimentation), as well as related topics such as questionnaire design, probability sampling and data analysis. The units end with clear "Do's and Don'ts,' as well as very helpful lists of suggested readings for those interested in learning more about a particular area of research.

                While I found this book extremely informative, I personally would have liked a few more examples to clearly illustrate some of the points. In any case, I recommend this book to marketers, who want to learn more about the benefits and limitations of marketing research techniques.

                For beginners in marketing research, this book will give you a strong understanding of the basic approaches and the relative values of different strategies.

                The best value this book should provide are to people who believe that their business is doing market research by interviewing a few customers or conducting an occasional study. This book will clearly articulate the value and the errors that limited study can offer your business or group.

                Especially valuable to Product Managers, Sales People, and their managers.

                Well, this book covers all the essentials to conducting marketing research, or at least to understanding how it is conducted! I would have given it a fourth star if the price tag had been lower.

                If you're dipping your toes into the waters of market research, you need this book. Its title is perfect: This really *is* a toolbox, written concisely for beginners.

                I bought this book when my boss assigned me a market research task that could determine company direction. He gave me the task because of my past work with surveys and usability testing. I wasn't comfortable flying by the seat of my pants on this one -- determining company direction isn't the same as determining what people didn't like about a Help system you created or determining what does and doesn't work well in a computer program's user interface.

                So I bought this book, and I'm glad I did. McQuarrie minced no words in explaining what market research is and what market research can and can't do for you. He next helped me determine the real goal for my research, and showed me what market-research tools are best suited for achieving that goal. He even told me what tools *not* to use. He did all this in the first 35 pages. The rest of the book describes the tools in the box. I only read the chapters about the tools relevant to my task. Within two hours, I had learned exactly what I needed to know for success -- no more, and no less.

                I especially appreciate McQuarrie's writing style, which Strunk and White would call "vigorous." He packs a lot of information into very few words.

                Take note: McQuarrie explains that his book will help you determine what tools you should use and tell you the basics of using the tool. However, he cautions that you should hire specialists to actually use the tools, because there is a lot of specialized knowledge behind successfully using each one. If you're determined to use these tools yourself, McQuarrie tells you what other books to read to get started.
