Book Description
This work offers a path-breaking analysis of the nature of the urban condition at the start of the new millennium. Adopting a global and interdisciplinary perspective, it reveals how new technologies and increasingly privatised systems of infrastructure provision--telecommunications, highways, urban streets, energy, and water--are supporting the splintering of metropolitan areas across the world.
Customer Reviews:
Aggravating.......2005-01-06
This explores the sociopolitical causes and ramifications in the development of modern infrastructure. But due to continual stating and restating of simple points, a reader loses track of what the authors are attempting to train his attention on. With all the research the authors have done on the subject matter, you might expect that; but it could take you a year of poring over this to get the full thrust of this. It certainly isn't concise.
The books real problem is the writing style. The text is a hybrid of bureaucratic and academic writing, defensively constructed to obviate charges of ambiguity or assumption. Here's a typical sentence:
"Thus we could argue that the supplementation of state forms of collectivised infrastructure development that supported the modern ideal with privatised regimes that need to attract international finance capital seems very likely to support the splintering of integrated and bundled networks into a myriad of individually financed and managed infrastructure projects."
You can go a few pages before encountering a sentence that hasn't been overworked like this. Torpid.
The other big problem is it's design. What you get out of it will depend on whether you can overcome the disruptive format. Just when you've finally bit into a passage of that writing, a new heading in boldface interrupts both the text and your concentration. This occurs once or twice a page for 400 pages. It isn't helpful. Is this a book, or is it six hundred short articles? Frequent sidebars also induce reader distraction.
reworking urban thinking.......2002-04-14
Graham and Marvin change the way we look at the city. Borrowing from architecture, geography, urban planning and sociology they demonstrate how infrastructure, mobility and urban life are intertwined in messy, fragmented configurations. Splintering Urbanism illustrates the increasingly segregated city, describing the unequal access to infrastructures of energy, information and transport - where providing corporations `cherry pick' the most potentially profitable users. The books major value is its integration of a corpus of diverse theoretical and practical approaches to the urban. This book is likely to reinvent the imagining of the city for academics, planners and architects alike.

Good, concise, to the point infosec title.......2003-04-20
It is ironic that the advent of the computer promised to dramatically reduce paper usage; today's 1,000-page-plus computer-security tomes have probably single-handedly deforested whole regions of the earth. A happy exception to this trend of titanic texts is Enterprise Security: The Manager's Defense Guide; which is relatively concise yet highly informative.
It provides a good overview of core information security issues and concepts. It takes a big-picture approach to information systems security, not bogging down the reader in arcane minutiae.
Overall, it has a more management- and process-oriented look at security and it a valuable title for anyone needing to know about information systems security without sacrificing a forest in the process.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2005-03-06
This book is a comprehensive guide to the art and science of public speaking. It covers all the basics and then some. I am a professional speaker and a professional member of the National Speakers Association (www.nsaspeaker.com). I teach public speaking skills and always recommend this book. I totally disagree with a previous reviewer who says the way to better public speaking is through practice. Experience without foundation is not the best teacher where public speaking is concerned. There is much to be learned about presentation technique, content development, preparation, etc. The book also gives great tips for using humor to make your point, using audiovisuals appropriately (so many people use them inappropriately), handling questions and so much more. Whether experienced at speaking or a novice, everyone can glean something from this book.
Great resource for revisting and revising your style........2003-09-26
I've had a copy of Successful Presentations for Dummies on my bookshelf since 1996 and found it to be a great reference and source of ideas for presentations as I have moved forward in my professional career. The book is broken up into various sections that address the most common problem areas for presenters and is easily referencable when you just need a quick review. I recommend this book, but it is now out of print.
Great resource for people who want to make an impact!.......2000-04-09
As a professional speaker, I found this book full of useful information. The author covers everything from how to be introduced to how to end your presentation effectively. He tells you how to involve your audience, how to use humor, how to design your presentation, and more. It's full of tips and examples. While it's true that the best way to improve your public speaking is to just do it, this book will shorten your learning curve by years!
Too long to read!.......1998-11-28
The section on humor is very good, but if you want to improve your presentation skills, it's no point reading a big book, you have to practice to improve.
This book could have been more useful if it were more concise.

Customer Reviews:
Translating military to civilian is key.......2007-10-23
Bradley-Morris, Inc. (BMI) commends Ms. McKinney for endeavoring to assist transitioning military. As the largest military to civilian placement firm, we have found that the most successful military job seekers who utilize our free services are the ones who construct a resume that clearly translates their military skills into civilian terms. This book and other web sites have good examples of how to do this, and having your resume communicate in this manner will help you obtain an interview. Then, the advantages of your military service (training, education, leadership, reliability) can take over. Being confident in your value to Corporate America, and being able to discuss your military experience in terms that a civilian hiring authority will understand will help any former-military servicemember succeed in winning the job.

Customer Reviews:
This girl knows what she is talking about!.......2002-10-03
I read this book after I made a sudden decision that I needed to be out on my own after college. I had not made any plans, I didn't have a job or a apartment of my own, or really have clue how to be an adult living in the real world on my own. It was something I had to do, but I was kind of freaked out about and I didn't know where to start. Reading this book really helped me. I loved the ways she writes, she's funny, witty and her advice is relevant. It's not some cheesy help book with advice you'd never use, this girl knows what she is talking about. This book helped me to empower myself and look forward to the adventure ahead. I keep it with me wherever I go, and I have moved around a lot in the last year. With advice like this, it helped give me a heads up to what I had to look forward to.
Too little detail.......2001-08-15
The book was pretty good overall. It offered a wide variety of information. Just like a survey course, however, she glosses over certain parts. For example, she talks about different types of insurance while mentioning, but not defining, a deductible. Other sections of the book seem scattered and unorganized.
