Book Description

In the past fifteen years, inflation has been conquered by many advanced countries. History reveals, however, that it has been conquered before and returned. In The Conquest of American Inflation, Thomas J. Sargent presents a groundbreaking analysis of the rise and fall of U.S. inflation after 1960. He examines two broad explanations for the behavior of inflation and unemployment in this period: the natural-rate hypothesis joined to the Lucas critique and a more traditional econometric policy evaluation modified to include adaptive expectations and learning. His purpose is not only to determine which is the better account, but also to codify for the benefit of the next generation the economic forces that cause inflation.

Sargent begins with an explanation of how American policymakers increased inflation in the early 1960s by following erroneous assumptions about the exploitability of the Phillips curve--the inverse relationship between inflation and unemployment. In subsequent chapters, he connects a sequence of ideas--self-confirming equilibria, least-squares and other adaptive or recursive learning algorithms, convergence of least-squares learners with self-confirming equilibria, and recurrent dynamics along escape routes from self-confirming equilibria. Sargent synthesizes results from macroeconomics, game theory, control theory, and other fields to extend both adaptive expectations and rational expectations theory, and he compellingly describes postwar inflation in terms of drifting coefficients. He interprets his results in favor of adaptive expectations as the relevant mechanism affecting inflation policy.

Providing an original methodological link between theoretical and policy economics, this book will engender much debate and become an indispensable text for academics, graduate students, and professional economists.

        Book Description

As the complexity of financial markets keeps growing, so does the need to understand the decision-making and the coordination of the exsuing actions in the marketplace. In particular, the disclosure of information to market participants and its impact on the market outcome mertis attention. This study analyses the role of private and public information in currency crises. Calls for increased dissemination of economic and policy-related information by central banks notwithstanding, the study shows that transparency is not generally conductive to preventing speculative attacks in fixed exchange-rate regimes. Rather, the role of private and public information in the market-place depencs critically on the prevailing market sentiment. The study also highlights the import of market transparency design in an environment that allows for herding and market leadership of individual speculators.

            5 out of 5 stars A must-read for ALL Entrepreneurs!.......1999-08-22

Gardner Russell has written a useful, informative and entertaining book filled with excellent and current guidelines of every sort. He takes difficult material and makes it user friendly. I finished reading it and immediately purchased three more books, one for each of my sons. And now my sons also thank Gardner Russell for giving us the facts.

4 out of 5 stars Practical lessons to keep you on track and in the black!.......1999-07-06

Gardner Russell gives an "insiders" view of the pitfalls small businesses must overcome to survive. Written in anecdotal form, each chapter covers a specific, business threatening problem Mr. Russell faced starting and running a variety of businesses in the USA and Puerto Rico. Each chapter concludes with an explanation of how he was able to overcome the challange and save the company.

These practical lessons will help the budding entrepreneur stay on track and in the black. It's worth the price of admission to look over the shoulder of someone who has been there and done that over the course of fifty years in business.

            Download Description

This book is written for engineers, scientists, and technology professionals who require a simple, concise, and practical guide to all forms of communication: writing, presenting, and interacting (such as in meetings and team activities). It also provides strategies for communicating technical information to non-technical audiences, a frequent concern when applying for funding or selling technical products. It provides useful, proven methods for accomplishing these communication tasks, focusing upon real-world situations and challenges. It's a basic principle: In order to convince a reader that communications can be fun, the book on communications must be fun to read. More than a mere outline or storyboard, it assists the communicator in capturing the connection, flow, and appropriate reinforcement.

5 out of 5 stars A practical perspective to effective communication.......2003-09-05

In this very little book (less than 200 pages), you'll find a treatment of the too often neglected aspect of effective communication: mental and psychological preparation. It discusses many issues that are responsible for ineffective communication.

The first part deals with written documents, part II with formal presentations, part III with informal discussions, part IV about cross-culture communication. Each part tackles the three important aspects of communication: planning, building the right attitude, and finally producing. Communication requires that one knows what one wants to communicate and how to do it. This book will change your way of thinking about effective communication.

4 out of 5 stars The "Strunk and White" of Communication for Nerds.......2001-03-23

Hirsch does a commendable job of boiling down the primary ideas for writing, presentation and meeting skills into a quick read. Many of the practices that we once learned, but have long forgotten (or ignored) are re-iterated here. By dividing into sections, you can quickly jump to where you want to focus (writing, speaking, meeting) There is some carryover from each chapter though, so reading once through is recommended

Wall Street brokerages are working hard these days to attract women investors. Publishers are, too. One of many recent titles on money management for women, Savvy Investing for Women is more informative than most. Marlene Jupiter, a former Wall Street derivatives trader, takes her subject and her readers seriously. The book provides a short course on economics, on portfolio diversification (jargon for "Don't put all your eggs in one basket"), and on the basics of buying stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. There's even a chapter on technical analysis, an abstruse topic neglected by most popular books but described by Jupiter with admirable clarity.

This extraordiary explanation in simple yet amuzing anecdotes really shows how a complex issue about investing can be easily understandible. The title is misleading, I learned more from this book than all my Masters courses taken in finance. The explanations of the basic things to look for in stocks or bonds or reading the Investor's Business Daily or Wall Street Journal gave me a real insight to the most liquid stock market in the world. Stock picking is not an easy task, but when you read about the same fundamentals that are prevalent in the winners you have to take careful notice. I was turned on to this book and author by a heavy duty Hedge Fund Managing Director, and was fortunate enough to meet and greet this down to earth best selling author. I was quite impressed with her insight and depth of knowledge in subjects like derivatives, market trends for signs of Bull or Bear markets which she forecasted are coming in mid 2006. She said she is finishing a new book with up to date details and new subjects rarely touched upon like the OTC, Small Cap and Bulletin Boards stocks and Reverse Mergers. I cannot wait.

important investment vehicles; such as, the "Investor's Business
Daily" which points toward important trends in the market.
The book stresses the need to look at multiple criteria for
                investing to include:
                o growth stocks and industries
                o capitalization
                o revenue growth rates
                o price/earnings ratios
                o the management team
                o treatment of employees
                o underwriter representation
                o financial analyst track records

The work discusses all-important mutual fund fee structures,
the benefits and pitfalls of derivatives and a whole host of
investments too numerous to list here.

Numerous risks are cited including systematic market risk,
inflation, interest rate fluctuations and consumer credit.
The book is well worth the price for a beginning investor.

4 out of 5 stars The title is misleading........1999-01-10

The title is misleading; this book is NOT only for women. This book contains solid investment advice from someone who's "been there and done it", who has worked her way up from being a secretary to being a vice president and became a millionaire along the way. A lot of men can learn from her.

5 out of 5 stars Not too technical, not too preachy either!.......1998-07-02

Unlike most financial books available, this book gives concrete real-life examples that make sense. The examples actually stay with you after you've put the book down. For those who are afraid of the math involved, don't be. She breaks it all down into pieces you can grasp. I may not remember everything she said, but I feel much more comfortable thinking about and looking at financial papers and investments now.

I read this book every week. Seriously.

The one commonality they have found in 90% of all Millionaires is that they had mentors. Mentors, people who have SUCCEEDED ALREADY and guide us along the path.

Reading through this book is like having hundreds of Mentors each telling you the one idea which encompasses all of their success.

BEST money I have spent on a business book, period.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, superb advice. I wouldn't be without this book........2003-01-04

This is the best business philosophy book since The Art of War by Sun Tzu. I can't say enough good things about it. It takes about an hour to read the whole thing, but you will learn SO MUCH from people who are already financially successful.

What you'll find in this book is excellent business wisdom such as the fact that making millions of dollars is easy--it's making the first $500,000 that's the tricky part. After that you just hire smart people and they make the rest for you. I learned that you should always schedule a meeting in the other person's office because it's much easier to leave when the meeting doesn't go your way, than to get them to leave. I learned that if you aim for an eagle and miss, you hit a rock, but if you aim for the moon and miss, you might hit an eagle. I learned that people who live from paycheck to paycheck are sacrificing wealth for pleasure. It goes on and on. It's like a new spiritual understanding of the mindset of wealthy people, and the mindset it takes to build wealth.

If you like philosophical approaches to business, or if you are a person who understands philosophical concepts and would like to learn more about business and wealth-building, you will love this book. I seriously believe that what I learned in this one little book will ultimately make me a millionaire.

                              Book Description

Hirohito and his Mickey Mouse watch, Goofy and Donald as our "Goodwill Ambassadors:" Disney Discourse is an interdisciplinary examination of the founder and his empire. These essays use an interdisciplinary approach to read through Disney's domestic cultural production "innocent" national icons, as well as theme parks, cartoons and television to analyze the global impact of American popular culture, the politics of Disney, and the complex reception Disney productions have received around the world.

The Disney corporation's ever-increasing visibility the opening of Euro Disney and new stores in malls and vast influence over global culture demands critical attention not only in film and television studies, but in international diplomacy, architecture, economics and other related fields. Disney Discourse consolidates the best of the current work on Disney and provides a representative sample of past analyses of the Disney empire.

Contributors: Julianne Burton-Carvajal, Lisa Cartwright, Brian Goldfarb, Richard deCordova, Douglas Gomery, David Kunzle, Jon Lewis, Moya Luckett, Richard Neupert, Susan Ohmer, José Piedra, Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto, Alexander Wilson.

5 out of 5 stars Complicates Assumptions about Disney.......2000-11-22

Disney Discourse is a substantial contribution to the field of Disney Studies. Smoodin's collection offers a range of reactions to the different Disneys that exist: television and film, theme parks, retail, and so forth. Furthermore, this interdisciplinary work is structured in three useful ways. First, it offers some representative materials from Disney's "golden age" that tend to praise Disney (both the man and the corporation). Second, many of the essays consider the reception to Disney. Three, the book is divided into four separate categories that provide an overview of possible approaches to the study of Disney.

As with any collection, not all the essays are of equal analytic strength. There are many good essays, however, particularl in the the sections entitled Cultural Production and Reception. Smoodin's own essay, "How to Read Walt Disney" is, in my opinion, worth the price of the book alone. Even essays which seem more grounded in personal reaction than critique have their worth; they demonstrate the investment individuals have in Disney as a site of debate.

Overall, the result of the book's conscientious structure is to complicate any easy binaries--taken as a collection, Disney Discourse refuses to unreflectively praise Disney or, equally problematic, simply critique Disney. Instead, Smoodin's book offers Disney as a site of investigation, of exploration, and of analysis. Indeed, Disney Discourse might be better renamed Disney Discourses in order to reflect the multiple ways people have approached Disney. Though not all the essays are equally strong, the book is a "must-have" for both serious scholars and Disney enthusiasts alike.
