    Book Description

An important building block for further advancing world-system theory, this book considers the theory from the perspectives of global processes and antisystemic movements, feminist theory, and the aftermath of the colonial system. The volume addresses three myths tied to Eurocentric forms of thinking: objectivist and universalist knowledges, the decolonization of the modern world, and developmentalism. All three myths, the authors argue, conceal the continued hierarchical and unequal relations of domination and exploitation between European and Euro-American centers and non-European peripheral regions. In this volume, world-system scholars address these and related aspects of the modern/colonial capitalist world-system. Addressing the myth of universalist knowledge, the volume reminds us that our knowledge is situated in the gender, class, racial, and sexual hierarchies of a specific region in the world-system, while the coloniality of power additionally situates our knowledge. The volume further argues that the postcolonial era retains the hierarchy of colonialism, and the possibility of national development without global structural changes is one of the greatest 20th-century myths. Taking these perspectives into consideration, the contributors examine and help to refine classic world-system theory.

3 out of 5 stars Marketing Approach to Enterprise Security.......2003-05-27

The authors took a unique "marketing approach" to enterprise security. I believe it is correct in theory, yet difficult in practice. The reason: unless security is at a "strategic" position in your company/industry (that is, doing security good will let you beat competitor ...), you can't get users' attention! And a marketing campaign with little attention can't get you anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars How to make security a mindset rather than an afterthought.......2002-12-13

The security of a business is truly dependent on everyone, from the head of the organization down to the cleaners. While many, if not most, people are focusing on the security of the IT department against external threats, certainly with justification, many of the security breaches do not involve external attacks. The published statistics vary as to the actual percentages, but they are consistent in claiming that a large percentage, if not the majority, of IT security problems are of internal origin. Furthermore, there is a great deal of dumpster diving that takes place between organizations. Millions of dollars spent on securing the computer system can be wasted if someone drops key information in a garbage can to be picked up and used by a competitor.
With all of these problems, the only way that an organization can keep its secrets is to adopt a policy that applies to all employees and is well-defined, effective and rigidly enforced. The authors of this book set down such a policy, with varying levels of restrictions, depending on the quality of the information. Many of the steps they use in constructing a security policy are similar to those used to build software:

          * Organize security by resource and domains, which is similar to the segmentation of tasks in software.
          * Complete the baseline security analysis, which is similar to the determination of the market for the software.
          * Complete the requirements, which is equivalent to the definition of the software specifications.
          * Identify gaps and prioritize needs, which is equivalent to setting priorities on software features.
          * Selecting and planning the projects, which is equivalent to setting down the software life cycle plan.
          * Security technologies, which is similar to determining what tools to use in the software construction.
          * Security follow-up projects, which is equivalent to doing a software post-mortem.

Chapters that describe two case histories, role-based authorization, single sign-on access restriction, and preparing the organization for security are also included. The authors point out that security is a state of mind and not simply of those that are paranoid. There are a lot of unscrupulous people in the world and we must all do everything that is sensibly possible to protect the property of our organizations. This will only continue to become more of an issue as the assets of businesses become more and more informational rather than structural.
This book is one that all managers should read. It explains in detail the reasons for a security policy and how to implement an effective one without alienating the employees and customers.

5 out of 5 stars Cookbook approach that makes a complex task manageable.......2002-03-20

Of all the security books I've read this one stands out as the best for two reasons: (1) it lays out what is needed and the steps to take to develop an enterprise security policy in a clear, logical sequence, and (2) there no gaps in the proposed process. Indeed, it appears that the authors had 'due diligence' as their foremost principle when they wrote this book. In addition their experience is evident by the way they approach the subject and tie it together.

The approach is straightforward: initiate, assess, gather requirements, perform a gap analysis, develop a baseline and implement. What makes the approach unique is the 'divide and conquer technique that partitions the business into security domains. This has benefits beyond decomposing the complexities of enterprise security into manageable pieces - it can also be linked into enterprise problem management and business continuity planning processes because you're forced to examine your resources and systems, and to prioritize them according to their criticality. I also liked the discussion of policies, which discussed the merits of identity-based and role-based approaches, and included excellent advice on policy auditing. One strong point about this section was the treatment of finding documented *and* undocumented policies. This material is applicable to anyone who is involved in policies and procedures development, regardless of whether or not it's related to security. I also especially liked the chapter on trust modeling. This is one area where I learned much from the book.

I've only touched upon key elements of this book. A review of the table of contents will reveal that it's complete and filled with case studies and important discussions of technologies that can be employed to create an effective enterprise security posture. This book is obviously applicable to security specialists, but is also useful to business continuity planners, service delivery practitioners and service providers. It is, to date, the best book on security from among the 20 I've read, that I've come across. It's also a complete recipe for a successful development and implementation of enterprise security policies, processes and procedures.

              2 out of 5 stars A waste of money..........2002-06-16

I bought this book prior to starting an MBA program because even though I was about to begin a major investment of time and money, I still wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to do with an MBA. After reading this book I was no more sure than before I started.

              2 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2001-10-21

Given the pedigree of the author, I was disappointed with this book. For a more useful alternative for MBA jobs, reading the Vault career guides is recommended by my MBA career center.

As an alum of a top 20 B-School, I thought this would be a perfect fit. However the book is just a colledtion of examples which offer no practical advice. One would be much better off consulting the book "Discovering Your Career in Business" by Butler and Waldroop of HBS.

5 out of 5 stars 12 years later -- still one of the best.......2005-07-01

I read the 1993 (2nd) edition of this when I was fresh out of college. After Atlas Shrugged, was probably the most profitable book I ever read. I'm now well on my way to being well-off, and I credit much of that to the no-nonsense, straightforward advice this book provides.

Like another reviewer, I too have given copies of this book as wedding gifts, homewarming, graduation -- you name it. Some might take it as rude or presumptious perhaps; but what of it. Good advice isn't always pleasant, yet priceless all the same.

If you're under the age of 25, just starting out your career, for god's sake read this book. If you're under the age of 35, *ouch* you're gonna kick yourself on chapter after chapter, but start reading now before the night grows even longer :-)

Best advice I ever got on Personal Finance. Glad I acted on
her solid financial education-the truth not the hype-of the financial industry.

Found her statement so very true "The right information is even more valuable than money itself..."

5 out of 5 stars Simple & straightforward explanations of financial subjects.......2004-04-25

I would strongly recommend this book to people of all ages and situations. Ms. McAleese uses clear, easily understood writing with good no-nonsense advice and examples. And her basic aim is quite straightforward - don't make choices about situations involving money without knowing fully how you (and the other guy) stand to benefit. It will show you how to see when a great situation is really only great for the other guy. And thus, you get rich by not giving your money away.

My wife and I have used our copy to guide us through many choices - budgeting, saving, insurance, retirement planning, homebuying - with great success. It has saved us when times were tough and has enabled us to do the things we want without sinking into debt. For a regular middle-class couple, we feel very well off just because we understand our own finances well.

In fact, I regularly give this book as a gift to friends (and their graduation-age kids) as a way to help them avoid some of the mistakes I made before I got this book. I know that sounds cheesy, but it's quite true.

5 out of 5 stars I've referred back to this book over and over since 1990........2002-07-13

This is the greatest gift you can ever give to anyone you know who is just starting out in the world of handling their own finances, as well as someone you know who is already 'in the game'. Make sure all of your young loved ones get this BEFORE the college credit card offers start swarming them in their Freshman year! I wish the author, Tama McAleese, would read this to hear my thanks and my plea for another 'Get Rich Slow' that includes what to do with all of these new things that have popped up like 529 plans, Education IRA's, new IRA contribution amounts, new tax laws, etc. Her foundations are timeless, but I would still love to hear what she has to say about the new trends.

5 out of 5 stars get rich slow.......2001-08-25

this book is a MUST READ. I am a financial planner and still find this book to be the most useful book on the market. It contains timeless concepts not the latest get rich quick schemes. If you buy a financial book buy this one.

David Stauffer gives out some reasons why Cisco is so successful in the Internet industry. Among all the factors, I think ...people¡¦ is the most important one. It is because they can generate creative ideas for the company and so they are valuable asset. The term ...internet ecosystem¡¦ and last minute management¡¦ are important terms as well.

4 out of 5 stars Business the Cisco Way.......2001-10-26

The author, David Stauffer, illustrate a clear picture of Cisco's business and management to readers.

Stauffer refreshes our view of today's business world. Stepping into internet age, IT should become an important issue for every business. "Internet Ecosystem", created by John Chamber, helps Cisco to be an sucessful international organization. By this internet ecosystem, Cisco forms a diversified and close relationship with it's suppliers/customers/partners, etc. leads to "last minute management", which is widely adopted by most business.

Apart from IT, Cisco treats innovative employees as their valuable assets. Cisco creates a superior working environment for them to enhance their performance/team work spirit/self-esteem, etc. Cisco makes many acquisitions for new technologies, but more specific, they acquire people for knowledge/creativity, say for the next generation products.

This book would help you to know more about the fast changing business world. Be well-prepared, are you ready?

              5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2001-03-23

David Stauffer's impressive new book seeks to explain why Cisco is one of the world's most important companies. At the heart of the book - and perhaps the company - is the management style of Cisco CEO John Chambers, who once worked for IBM and Wang. The book illustrates how Chambers noted the problems at both of his former employers and resolved that they would never show up at Cisco. The author also covers Cisco's famed acquisition strategy, and explains how the company targets employees, rather than profits, in its acquisition sights. Although the author seems enamored with the company, it's tough to argue with his main points, especially when he cites other companies, such as Oracle and Microsoft, that have replicated Cisco strategies. We [...] recommend this definitive and entertaining book as an insightful look into a pivotal new-economy company, and the strategies that got it to where it is today.

4 out of 5 stars Executing on all routers..........2001-01-24

This is a good, solid book detailing many of the basic management attributes that have made Cisco successful. The combination of consistent management principles joins a unique company culture instilled by John Chambers with the result that Cisco has enjoyed remarkable success through the last fifteen years.

Core lessons include: 1. Put people first before products, profits and everything else. Cisco has had only 7% attrition while typical Silicon Valley turnover is closer to 25%. 2. Listen constantly to customers. Serve your core customers from start to end. Rumor has it that John Chambers gives his home phone number to every customer he speaks with! 3. Cisco's philosophy towards growing the business through acquisition in order to reduce time-to-market while also maintaining a technology leadership position. And more!

              Good lessons.

                  Book Description

Antidumping and countervailing duty measures can no longer languish on the books eternally. The new `sunset' provision, agreed to during the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiations, establishes a five-year time limit (from imposition or last review) on these measures. Maintaining such measures now requires a finding that expiration would likely lead to dumping or subsidization and injury. Many member states, such as the United States, have had to modify their domestic legislation to incorporate the new rules. The commencement of the first round of sunset reviews in the United States is set for July 1998. This timely, practical guide offers all the information on sunset reviews that practitioners in the field need to know. Separate chapters focus on the law and practice on expiration of measures before and after the Uruguay Round for the European Union (EU), Canada, Australia, and the United States -- historically the major users of antidumping and countervailing measures. Further chapters comprise: + a concise negotiating history of the provisions for context in understanding future post-Uruguay Round sunset decisions; + reviews of applicable legislative provisions and summaries of factors considered in applying provisions in particular cases; + procedural background and deadlines for sunset reviews; and + a comparison of the procedural requirements and substantive considerations in the sunset review systems. WTO Antidumping and Subsidy Agreements also offers several practical features: + ample support in the form of citations to laws and individual decisions; + three appendices consisting of side-by-side comparisons of the actual negotiating drafts of the sunset provisions used by the Uruguay Round negotiators as well as the primary sunset review provisions in the domestic legislation of the covered countries; + a summary of a recent case; and + a review of factors considered by the authorities that typically lead to affirmative determinations. Practitioners in antidumping and countervailing duty cases will find that its coverage and features make WTO Antidumping and Subsidy Agreements a timely and useful tool for effective participation in sunset reviews in any member state.
