Book Description
As a tribute to the exceptional contributions of Alan Walters to monetary theory and policy, this book draws together a distinguished cast of international contributors to write about money. In a series of essays they review controversies in monetary economics and debate current policy issues.
Combining theoretical analysis with policy evaluation, this book touches on a whole spectrum of issues ranging from monetary union and exchange rate regimes, to credit rationing and policy games. The book focuses on the problems of modelling the effects of monetary and fiscal policy, and setting optimal policies for the future. It concludes with two stimulating panel discussions, one questioning whether the UK should join the Euro and the other discussing the appropriate targets of monetary policy.
Bringing together for the first time papers celebrating Alan Walters' achievements in this field, this book will be warmly welcomed by those with special interest in monetary economics, particularly policymakers, students and academics.

Book Description
Drawing upon forty years of experience from his own sports and celebrity management practice, Mark H. McCormack is back with common-sense advice aimed at business owners and would-be CEOs. McCormack's tips include:
* End your day on time
* People who say they can keep a secret usually can't
* It pays to overestimate your competition
* The best ideas cannot be stolen
* Know when to say "It's none of your business"
* Get paid for thinking rather than doing
* Time in front of the customer is the best time of all
* Be wary of unanimous agreement
* Not every budget deserves your respect
* Learn the art of picking up the check
In ninety brief chapters that range in topic from getting ahead to staying competitive, McCormack makes clear that doing business in today's climate still involves the same basic elements of human interaction-intelligence, creativity, and efficiency-that have always meant the difference between success and failure.
Customer Reviews:
It's Okay - Certainly 30 Gold Nuggets out of 91.......2007-05-07
You can read this book in an afternoon, and if you are looking for ways to boost your business, I'd definitely recommend you check this out from the library rather than buying it. 70 - 80% of the recommendations here are focused on the career side of improvement.
Much of the recommendations are, as one reviewer posted, common sense, and certainly these have nearly all been covered by other books. There are a few that are well-done and that I've certainly not seen before:
* Not every budget deserves your respect
* Shrink your world into a small town
* A "heads-up" has consequences too
* Your job is just another project
And a handful of others. I'm not convinced the book is worth the money at an individual level; check it out from your local library first. If you find yourself taking 2+ pages of notes and you're only one-third of the way through the book, then go and buy it yourself.

Good read..........2006-06-26
Nuggets of wisdom for business and life in general. Lessons derived from business. I guess they may be useful for life in general as well. Having read so many titles and columns from the author, the examples are becoming a little de javu. Overall a good read.
Good roundup of common sense in business relationships.......2003-10-31
(This book was previously published as 'Staying Street Smart in the Internet Age').
It's not the first book by Mark McCormack I've read. Like the others, its very readable, and gives a collection of homespun philosophies, interspersed with personal life experiences. There's a strong emphasis on Sales, but 'selling' is surely part of all of our business relationships.
Just don't believe in the gospel of everything McCormack has to say; there are contradictions, just as life is full of them, such as :
In Part 8 'When you are in Charge', there is the lesson "unlearn the bad habit of not trusting your 1st impression", whereas in Part 9 'Etiquette for the New Millenium', under 'reading people requires more than one reading', there is a "caveat about reading people too quickly" - so which is it to be?
Consider it light reading to just remind you of the good & bad things that you can do to others & they can do to you, and re-adjust & compensate accordingly.

I started reading business books with Mark McCormack's "What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School" years ago. So, I couldn't resist "Never Wrestle with a Pig," and am glad I picked it up. McCormack reminds us of the fundamentals and basic goals of business in order to succeed and prosper - whether today, tomorrow or way back in the 20th Century. I'm done wrestling with pigs, but I am going to give humans in business more chances with my refreshed knowledge from McCormack. It's a quick read with long-lasting benefits.

Big thoughts about small business.......2002-03-19
Starting and running a small business is a serious undertaking. Sometimes too serious. That's why it's especially welcome to see a book that brings a little levity to the subject., like Tim Kissman's "No Experience Necessary".
"No Experience Necessary" takes a light-hearted look at the challenges that face entrepreneurs. But just because his writing is humorous doesn't mean it's not valuable. Tim knows what he's talking about and offers solid, practical advice.
The book is divided into seven broad sections: general business tips, manners and first impressions; sound good, look good; understanding technology and the Internet, human resources and how to stretch the dollar, marketing; and `tis the seasonal tips and keeping stress to a minimum.
Within each section, Kissman covers topics that range from the serious-sounding (use your down time wisely, know your cell phone etiquette, proofread your copy carefully, how to make it in the media) to the goofy (printer fairy tales, avoiding the receipt Nazis). But whether sublime or silly, the titles really reflect a considerable amount of research and analysis by Tim. He's personally worked his way through a lot of small business challenges and interviewed many other entrepreneurs. The hands-on experience really shows.
Since the book is a collection of several years worth of newspaper columns, some of the topics in the Internet section are a little dated. But it's hardly Tim's fault that technology changes almost faster than he can write about it. If readers keep in mind that computer terms blossom and fade faster than dandelions in spring, the overall advice will still be sound.
The greatest appeal of "No Experience Necessary" is Tim's willingness to poke fun at himself. One of my favorite stories is how he left his briefcase on top his car, then went tearing around a corner, flinging his briefcase into oblivion. He turned his bout of absentmindedness into a nice column about how to write a lost-and-found newspaper ad.
He never found his briefcase. But you'll find all kinds of advice to treasure in "No Experience Necessary."
Great advice for a small business owner.......2002-01-25
This book was written for me as a small business owner just starting out. I was in the corporate world for the past 10 years and found a way out. The business practices I learned in a big company helped me in a lot of ways, but I found I was lacking the skills neccesary to stand on my own feet. I wanted to find a book that helped me learn these skills without boring me to sleep. This book was not only informative, but entertaining as well. The author does a great job blending useful tips with a great sense of humor. I would recommend this to anyone starting out or who is in business and would like help getting a competitive edge.

Customer Reviews:
Fraud ID Handbook review.......2004-09-08
This is a review of many different types of fraud. It is perhaps most applicable for a course in school. To make it more interesting in the next edition, I recommend that the author tie the fraud to the penalties and the likely liability of perpetrators, chances of getting caught, and more anecdotes about criminal cases brought to conclusion, and details about how the prosecutors operate. The (surprising) general idea I get from the book is that fraud is rampant and seldom discovered. The collection of estimates about the society-wide costs of fraud at the end of the book is fascinating, as is the history of fraud at the beginning.
very informative.......2003-01-07
I am a investigator for the U.S. gov't. This book is very informative. The book I believe, is not meant to be read cover to cover. Instead it is more like a ref. guide to all types of fraud. Very good book. I'm glad I have this in my library.
Avoid victimization by fraud, consult this book.......2002-11-02
I hear or read about fraud everyday--it?s scary. Not wanting to become a victim, I got The Fraud Identification Handbook, one of the most reasonably priced books on fraud available. Every type of fraud--that I can think of--is covered.
Before I bought a house, I read the Read Estate Fraud section, which prompted me to check a broker?s license history. Following the Handbook?s recommendation, I avoided dealing with someone who had a history of complaints.
I am considering having work done on my home, and I am so glad I consulted the section on Home Repair Fraud first. I will not do business with a contractor who demands some up-front payment.
Clearly well researched, all of the supporting examples of fraud are referenced. Tips on prevention follow each section, lending credence to the author?s expertise on the subject. I can recommend this book to others who want to be aware of and avoid fraud.
This is NOT a 5-Star Book!.......2002-10-03
I don't understand how the other reviewers could give this book 5 stars!
The book IS definitely comprehensive.
It is poorly edited. For example the author does not know the difference between effect and affect.
It is repetitious. Many sentences/paragraphs are repeated throughout the book.
Worst of all, it is dull.
It is NOT a bad book. But it's not very good, either. Strictly mediocre.
"A great, comprehensive book on Fraud!".......1999-08-18
As a Federal Investigator, I have certainly read my fair share of Criminal Justice books, however, this book is different, unique, and down right better. It is a must read for anyone working in or wanting to become familiar with aspects of Fraud. This is one of the best practical books I have read on Criminal Justice and Fraud. As one can imagine, with a Degree in Criminal Justice I have read too many books on the subject, yet this book is definitely more practical and has a wider scope of use than most books in the Criminal Justice/Fraud realm. This book is not just for the Criminal Justice professional, but rather anyone who would like to protect themselves from being a victim of fraud.

Customer Reviews:
Good information for the average computer user..........2004-04-18
Target Audience
Anyone who is an internet user and hasn't thought about protecting their identity.
Contents
This book outlines the issues involved in protecting your identity in an online environment, along with giving practical suggestions on how to do so.
The book is divided into the following chapters: Identity Theft: Are You At Risk?; Protecting Your Hard Drive; Keeping Your Email Private; Self-Defense On The Web; Connecting To The Internet Safely; Are Your Kids Putting You At Risk?; If You Become A Victim; Configuring Your Browser And Firewall; Index
Review
If you're a long-time techno-geek, you've no doubt been aware of the risks of exposing your identity on the Internet. You make sure credit cards are only used over encrypted links, you don't fall for phishing scams, and so on. But as more people have started to go online over the years, the incidents of computer crime and identity theft have risen dramatically. To combat your exposure to those scams, you should read Hack Proofing Your Identity In The Information Age.
The typical computer user will pick up quite a bit from this book. The first chapter will introduce the concept of identity theft and how easy it is for someone to glean information from you and use it to open credit accounts. There is also information here on how to avoid theft by non-electronic methods, such as securing your mail and cell phone. Subsequent chapters go more into detail on specific areas, such as email and web browsing. While the authors rightly state that it is impossible to completely protect yourself against a determined attacker, reading and implementing the material that you find in this book will significantly decrease your chances of becoming a victim.
To the techno-geek who's been living in the computer age for a long time, you will undoubtedly know most of this information. Even so, it's not assured that you will never become a victim. The chapter titled If You Become A Victim is a good reference on what steps to take once you determine that you've been targeted. Since it can be a stressful experience to clean up the damage, the convenience of having all the steps spelled out for you can be a lifesaver.
Conclusion
A good book for people who have never considered the risks of identity theft as they surf the internet, as well as for someone who is trying to clean up the damage once the theft occurs.
Read and Apply This Information.......2003-01-08
The developed world is in a transition. We are becoming an information economy. A result of this is that our identity is more important than ever and our identities are at risk of being stolen and misused! Hack Proofing Your Identity covers the fundamentals you need to know about identity theft. The book is primarily positioned as an awareness tool and is a serious wake up call. The author, Teri Bidwell clearly makes the point that simple everyday tasks such as writing checks, using credit cards, logging onto the Internet to perform on-line banking or stock trading reveal our private information to the outside world.
This book is directed towards real people, the average computer user, and avoids the gargon you might see in a text written for IT workers. Parents will also find this book intriguing as it teaches cyber security for children. The Author not only shares ways of protecting yourself and your private information, but also provide an in-depth introduction and summary of each chapter, as well as fast track solutions and frequently asked questions.
The book begins with identity theft and outlines what electronic information is truly private and how your personal information can be used against you. Then it moves on to a discussion about choosing strong passwords, installing and updating antivirus software as well as file encryption.
There is a fascinating discussion about how to protect your identity while using E-mail and the Internet. The book makes it clear that connecting to the Internet connects you to the rest of the world!
Raising children in the cyber and digital age brings a whole new set of challenges. Parents need to educate children about computerized sexual predators, unethical and illegal uses of computers. This is not a pleasant topic, but it is crucial. My own son nearly fell prey to one as a young teenager. My wife found him in the garage on the phone with an older lady who was trying to set up a rendezvous. They had met in a chat room. The book shows you how to protect children from becoming victims of crime on the Internet.
What happens if you become a victim of identity theft? How do you protect yourself or regain your identity? This is covered as well. The bottom line, this is an approachable book that covers the basic information that you really should think about. Read it then make sure your spouse, your parents and your kids know this stuff and put it into practice.

Book Description
Like stars, societies are born, and this story deals with such a birth. It asks a fundamental and compelling question: How did societies first coalesce from the small foraging communities that had roamed in West Central Africa for many thousands of years?
Jan Vansina continues a career-long effort to reconstruct the history of African societies before European contact in How Societies Are Born. In this complement to his previous study Paths in the Rainforests, Vansina employs a provocative combination of archaeology and historical linguistics to turn his scholarly focus to governance, studying the creation of relatively large societies extending beyond the foraging groups that characterized west central Africa from the beginning of human habitation to around 500 BCE, and the institutions that bridged their constituent local communities and made large-scale cooperation possible.
The increasing reliance on cereal crops, iron tools, large herds of cattle, and overarching institutions such as corporate matrilineages and dispersed matriclans lead up to the developments treated in the second part of the book. From about 900 BCE until European contact, different societies chose different developmental paths. Interestingly, these proceeded well beyond environmental constraints and were characterized by "major differences in the subjects which enthralled people," whether these were cattle, initiations and social position, or "the splendors of sacralized leaders and the possibilities of participating in them."
