solid handbook.......2007-07-19
this is a solid, almost academic, handbook. it's points you toward the things you need to figure out but you'll still need to get additional information on your local regulations. personnaly, it discouraged me from opening a buisness at this time.
Outstanding book!.......2007-03-15
This book is very detailed and to the point. It covers all areas of the restaurant business. Then menu planning section is great. It gives so much foresight.
2004 Writers Notes Book Award Winner.......2005-05-18
The Restaurant Manager's Handbook is a no-nonsense, coverall manual for the food establishment industry. It's the essence of a successful handbook-no jokes, parables, and preachy lectures, just the facts. If you delve into the heal-thy index for fault, you'll abruptly bump into a page number for an answer, and if you're currently running a restaurant and afraid to appear inadequate, you can load the handy CD-ROM and pretend you're checking your e-mail while figur-ing out the monthly audit procedures or why the beer is flat. I'm not kidding. The next time your favorite kitchen runs short of the daily special or closes down for a lack of permit, serve them a copy of this great reference book.
Superb!!.......2003-10-01
The books nineteen chapters cover the entire process of a restaurant start-up and ongoing management.The companion CD rom which contains all the forms is worth the modest price of the book alone. I would highly recomend this book to anyone in the industry now or who wants to get started with sound financial planning. Also the extensive resource guide in the back of the book is superb - we will use this book often.

Now in a completely revised and thoroughly updated third edition, The Restaurant Manager's Handbook: How To Set Up, Operate And Manage A Financially Successful Food Service Operation by Douglas Robert Brown is a solid, no-nonsense, all-encompassing curriculum to teaching oneself the basics of the restaurant business. Book Description
In October 1985, at age 27, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants--Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes 11 unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?
In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.
Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.
Service with a Smile: Dishing with Danny Meyer
Is the customer always right? According to Danny Meyer, one of America's leading restauranteurs, the answer is no--but "they must always feel heard." Named one of the most influential New Yorkers of 2006 by New York magazine, Meyer, the founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan's most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack, has penned Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality, a business book that reads like food lit and equal part personal memoir. Amazon.com senior editor Brad Thomas Parsons took some time from his daily long-distance day-dreaming of Shake Shack and caught up with the ever-gracious Danny Meyer over e-mail to ask about his new book, the Food Network, his favorite cookbooks, insider tips on dining out, and much more.

This book studies the interactions between monetary and fiscal policies in the Euro area. The policy makers are the union central bank, the German government, the French government and other governments. The policy targets are price stability in the union, full employment in Germany, full employment in France, etc. The policy instruments are union money supply, German government purchases, French government purchases, etc. As a rule, the spillovers of fiscal policy are negative. The policy makers follow either cold-turkey or gradualist strategies. The policy decisions are taken sequentially or simultaneously. Policy expectations are adaptive or rational. This book carefully discusses the case for central bank independence and fiscal cooperation.

Not for the underdetermined.......2004-12-11
This book is not for the under-determined, like the last reviewer. The subject is not Computer Science. The subject is Economics, the application is Computer Science. This is not a HOWTO for building expert systems. This is a cry for survival -- economic survival. This is a perfect book for computer scientists, developers, CEOs, chief visionaries, or as Larry would put it (as he has in class with respect to class) this is a book for the generals not the grunts. The world needs more expert systems. Expert systems are innovative, deliver actual work (not just reformatted work), never breakdown, and expert systems will be produced cheaply.
inspiring and visionary.......2002-06-06
I am one of the lucky 10,000+ students who have been taught by Larry Smith in economics at the University of Waterloo. True to his intentions, this book inspires computer scientists to develop a new generation of software tools that will truly revolutionize the world we live in today, namely expert systems. The book does an excellent job at instilling ideas in the mind of the reader of new expert systems that ultimately will be created. Larry Smith has a good grasp on IT as well as economics, and is truly one of the industry's visionaries. Although it lacks in examples, like Prof. Smith said in class, the book is designed to get people thinking about these fantastic expert systems.
Good ideas.......2002-05-17
This book has a series of good thought provoking ideas, though in some places, it can be a bit repetitive.
While I think the book is trying not to limit its readers' imaginations, a few more example of where expert systems are or could be implemented would be useful. These example would lend more credibility to the ideas, since they would show that the systems that are vaguely described in the book could actually be implemented.
A must read for those that want to change the world using IT.

Book Description
If you can't remember the last time you found yourself smiling at work, perhaps it is time to take a look at Joysticks, Blinking Lights & Thrills -- a refreshing approach to running your small business. Instead of leaving you in the dark with countless new buzzwords and jumbled jargon, this little handbook is brimming with anecdotes and analogies to help you overcome the daily muck that keeps you and your company from succeeding.
Author Joe Sherlock pulls humorous examples, lighthearted but heavyweight, from his own business experience and his consulting practice to identify 47 specific problem areas in business and provides easy-as-cake solutions to implement into your own business. And this handbook is written in a nonlinear manner allowing you to find the solutions you need now without having to read the book from cover to cover. However, you will want to read it over and over again to squeeze every last idea from this refreshing business expert. Joe Sherlock's practical, down-to-earth advice is broken down into six main topics:
* Business Management
* Marketing
* Selling
* Customer Service
* Employees
* Planning for the Future

* Hiring and Keeping Good People
* Maintaining a Hands-on Style
* Measuring True Productivity
* Delivering What is Promised
* Adapting to the Marketplace
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining book!.......2003-07-30
This is not really a nuts and bolts kind of business book, although there are some concrete ideas peppered throughout. It's more of a morale or confidence booster for the small business owner / entrepreneur. It tries to help you avoid pitfalls and build enthusiasm.
I would say it is best for two audiences:
1) You're a small business owner and are feeling stressed, down in the dumps or afraid failure is around the corner. This is a good book for helping you think creativily and not lose your focus and drive.
2) You're thinking of starting a business and you've read a bunch of books that make the whole thing seem daunting. The book will help you rediscover the entrepreneur that is maybe running a little bit scared inside you.
NOT a primer on running a business, incorporating, bookkeeping, etc. It is a little bit more "touchy-feely" than a lot of business books, but I enjoyed its breezy style and found it a nice tonic for some of the stuffier (but important) other books out there.

Customer Reviews:
This is the book for professional business presentations.......2003-12-05
There is an old saying in sales: "You have to sell the sizzle along with the steak." Most presentation books (and I have read dozens) sell a lot of sizzle and very little meat. Bulletproof Presentations is the best book I have read on business presentations, because it focuses as much on how to develop your content as on the mechanics of the presentation. For example, the concept of an overriding theme is critical to ensuring that your message gets remembered. Campbell's stories and examples show that he is an expert on delivering professional presentations to a business audience, and I believe anyone following his advice can aspire to the same level. I strongly recommend this book.
Highly Recommended!.......2002-10-23
G. Michael Campbell notes a shocking statistic in the opening pages of his book: Americans fear public speaking more than death. One reason that so many professionals dread making presentations is that they have not been trained in the basics. The best public speakers use techniques that can be taught and learned, and Campbell presents many of the most important of these methods here. We from getAbstract strongly recommend this book to any novice public speakers, as well as to presentation veterans who are sure to pick up a new trick or two.
Easy-to-read and Easy-to-follow Guide.......2002-07-09
All of us in business have wished at some time or the other for a "shield" that would stop holes from being shot into the ideas we present. In this book, Mike Campbell offers an easy-to-read and easy-to-follow guide to ensure "bullet-proof presentations." He discusses all aspects of planning and preparing for a presentation including what types of visual aids-from old-fashioned flipcharts to computer-generated media - might enhance the story being told. He explains how to build the body of a speech and choose the right strategy for delivery to guarantee a presentation has not only substance but also style. There are tips and advice for everyone here - no matter their rung on the corporate ladder or how often they present. The "blueprint" for presentation preparation is a handy tool that should be used again and again and the "consider this" illustrations and anecdotes keep the reading stimulating and interesting!

Great info for serious job seekers.......2003-04-11
This is a great source for those ambitious folks who are committed to working at this big five firm. I was very curious to see how IBM turned out after the big changes that took place with its merger. Now I feel fully prepared to meet the recruiters when they come to my campus this fall. I strongly recommend this as a great source for interview preparation.
Shows you a view of the company from the inside out.......2003-02-20
This guide is the best recruiting resource I've found so far. There is no other resource that provides this kind of in-depth information, both the good and the bad, on a single company. Now I have a very clear and detailed picture of the company structure, its business strategy, and the inside culture. I was fully prepared for my interview with intelligent questions. Better yet, if I get the offer (I hope!) I know exactly what I'm stepping into. To anyone interested in working for IBM, I can't recommend this strongly enough.
Good ammo for the interview.......2003-02-20
This guide was a good read--I was wondering what was up with the PwC acquisition! Anyway, it will definitely be helpful for when I interview with IBM. I'm banking on the fact that I've read and re-read this guide and followed up with more in-depth research to give me the inside edge on my competition!
