Book Description
Once heralded in the 1950s and 1960s as a model welfare state, Sweden is now in transition and in trouble since its economic plunge in the early 1990s.
This volume presents ten essays that examine Sweden's economic problems from a U.S. perspective. Exploring such diverse topics as income equalization and efficiency, welfare and tax policy, wage determination and unemployment, and international competitiveness and growth, they consider how Sweden's welfare state succeeded in eliminating poverty and became a role model for other countries. They then reflect on Sweden's past economic problems, such as the increase in government spending and the fall in industrial productivity, warning of problems to come. Finally they review the consequences of the collapse of Sweden's economy in the early 1990s, exploring the implications of its efforts to reform its welfare state and reestablish a healthy economy.
This volume will be of interest to policymakers and analysts, social scientists, and economists interested in welfare states.

Book Description
Pamela Benoit analyzes the success story as a delicate interpersonal accomplishment that involves balancing complimenting, bragging, modesty, and self-enhancement. She argues that success stories are self-presentations that are fundamental to interpersonalcommunication. This discourse involves the negotiation of personal identities and affects relational outcomes. It is important for individuals, businesses, and other organizations to create a favorable impression when they describe their successes.
Although scholars have given considerable attention to defensive impression management in descriptions of accounts for undesirable events, this is the first book to systematically examine discourse about desirablepersonal events. The success stories of Nobel Prize winners, athletes, and Mary Kay consultants offer an enticing invitation to explore the practical accomplishment of success narratives and provides a model for other analyses of intricate interpersonal accomplishments.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Book.......2004-11-30
* I believe that this book is best suited for academic readers, thus, my review is aimed at that audience*
I found this book to be very useful in several respects, particularly as it contributed to the literature on entitlements and enhancements and incorporated the use of what the author refers to as 'disclaiming' strategies (dissociations; detractions) to downplay one's success(es). Very well done.
That said, as one who does research in this area, I noticed a few things that I felt detracted from the overall quality and appropriateness of the work.
1. I would have preferred to see a more precise and telling use of terminology for some of the new(ish) concepts introduced... 'disclaiming', after all, is not a new term whatsoever in the broader impression management literature. In fact, the term is widely used to refer to strategies that seek to distance oneself (or others) from negative phenomena. Likewise, the term 'dissociation' is far too broad/general to refer to diminishing one's responsibility for otherwise positive phenomena.
2. The concept of ingratiation (Jones, 1964; Jones & Pittman, 1982)- seeking the perception or attribution of likability - is never mentioned explicitly, although its component facets (e.g., rendering favors; opinion conformity) are discussed. To discuss the facets of ingratiation without ever recognizing the parent concept from which they flow is strange to me, especially when the parent concept is so widely recognized and seminal to this area of work.
3. The concept of self-promotion (Jones & Pittman, 1982) - seeking the attribution of competence - is never explicitly mentioned, either. This too is very odd to me, in that the key thrust/idea of the book (in my opinion) is in dealing with what Jones and Pittman (1982) referred to as the 'self-promoter's paradox' -> i.e., seeking the perception of competence in the eyes of others while avoiding the appearance of immodesty/self-aggrandizement. (I must add here that I view entitlement and enhancement as components of self-promotion).
Despite these quibbles, all in all, I found this to be a very worthwhile read and solid contribution to the image/impression management literature.
Incredibly interesting and mentally stimulating book.......2000-04-28
This book by Pam Benoit is a wonderful description of how people respond to success. This is a book that anyone who has experienced personal or professional successes will appreciate. Benoit describes the delicate process of balancing complimenting, bragging, modesty, and self-enhancement. Useful for individuals, businesses, and any other organizations who want to understand how to create a favorable impression when they describe their successes. It includes stories of athletes, Mary Kay consultants, and Nobel Prize Winners all in the context of intricate analyses of interpersonal accomplishments.

Customer Reviews:
Great resource for career exploration & job hunting.......2006-02-07
I read this book while exploring career opportunities in psychology and social work. This book has lots of useful information about different jobs, the education required, salaries, and help with resumes and interviews. I found it full of useful points, and the list of suggested actions to list on your resume, based on the sort of job you're seeking, was especially useful. One thing I didn't like was the organization of the book - appendices were overused and broke up the flow, but that may have been fixed in more recent editions.
The best book on the Social Worker's Career.......2005-09-05
I have been waiting for this edition to come out for over a year. Her last edition was great and her second is living up to my expectations.
The author is thorough and she has produced the best and most up-to-date information/how-to book on social work that I know of, and I've done my homework. She has written the material to cover most of the possible employment scenarios that a SW could find their selves in and has provided links and/or resources to follow-up for more detail if necessary. She addresses licensure, certification, billing, education and the post education development of the social worker's career. Resumes, cover letters, check-off lists, applications, interviews are topics covered in detail.
Chapters are: 1. Setting a Direction for Your Search; 2. Researching Market and Salary Information; 3. Preparing Resumes, Curricula Vitae, Portfolios, and References; 4. Identifying Jobs and Pursuing Leads; 5. Interviewing Effectively; 6. Evaluating Job Offers; 7. Career Management and Professional Development. Detail subheadings are given in each chapter (ex: Ch.1 - Assessing Your Strengths, Deciding on Your Objectives, Making Transitions, Preparing Your Message, and Moving On). It is published by NASW, and Amazon has the best price at this time.
Carol Doelling, thank you.....

An Insider's Guide to Life Settlement Investing
ASIN: 0965261573 |
Book Description
Huge profits are possible. Yet investors have lost more than $500 million in the short life of this industry. Whether you advise others or invest your own money, here's everything you need to know before investing in Viatical Settlements.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT, well-researched, well-written, and caring........1999-12-28
This book is an absolute MUST for anyone involved with viatical settlements. I suspect that anyone who says otherwise is trying to promote ignorance for their own dishonest purposes. There is no more authoritative source on viatical settlements in print. The author educates the reader, and the book is extremely thorough, easy to understand, and is also well-researched and documented. I'm objective - I have no policy to buy or sell and I don't know the author or anyone affiliated with the book. Beware of those who may denounce this book, as odds are good they have a hidden agenda...
This book has many errors and factual mistakes.......1999-11-10
The book is so poorly written it does not help the reader at all. There are hundreds of typo's and, worse, the writer does not identify most sources for the material she writes.
Good information for insureds, investors, & REGULATORS.......1999-08-04
Please get the word out to investors that these type of investments are VERY risky. Although there are probably legitimate viatial companies and viatical brokers out there - I have yet to find any. This book is very informative and explains an industry that not too many people know about.
A Must Read for Anyone Investing in Viatical Contracts.......1999-01-13
As one engaged in financial products and services and who has increasingly turned to viatical settlements as in investment option for our clients, I strongly recommend Gloria Wolk's book BEFORE purchasing a viatical contract. Viatical settlement contracts afford both a humanitarian AND financial reward to the investor. Ms. Wolk's book guides the reader through the many pitfalls a potential purchaser might encounter in this largely unregulated industry. As Ms. Wolk concludes, ,"if we keep investors safe, the industry will remain viable. If we keep investors safe, the industry will continue its phenomenal growth. If we make these efforts today, thousands of patients in the decades to come will benefit. They will be able to die with dignity because informed and caring investors gave them cash for the final days."
Better safe than sorry!.......1998-09-07
As an insurance agent and someone who has worked as an investigator your first step to either selling or investing in a viatical settlement is to read Viatical Settlements an Investors' Guide by Gloria Wolk. I have seen investors swindled and investment promoters jailed as a result of slick hyped up investments. Viatical settlements are similar to the Florida land deals of the sixties, you can make money or you can be easily swindled. By following the advice in Gloria Wolk's latest book you can be one of the educated investors who wisely and safely make money in the viatical settlement marketplace. If you don't plan on following the advice in this book you probably should find another investment vehicle for your money. It is a shame that one of the best investments to come along in years, which offers a humanitarian service is being made into a three ring circus which has caused investors to lose $200,000,000. However, like anything else education is the key and this book will fortunately give you the tools you will need to safely and intelligently invest in the viatical market.------- Frank Meyers-Shaker Hts. Book Description
Harold Geneen is widely hailed as one of the greatest innovators the business world has ever known. In his final book, the father of the conglomerate who called himself "just plain Harold" took on the popular beliefs and practices in the business world today, and championed the no-nonsense values that served him so well. The result is the equivalent of a master class with one of the most accomplished businessmen of our time.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
A Valuable Text.......2007-02-09
I am the Principal of Cohesion Inc, a marketing & business consulting organization, and also a part-time course director in the marketing faculty of the Schulich School of Business, York University in Toronto, Canada.
I believe that this text is a valuable addition to marketing and branding literature, especially given the insights it provides with respect to branding challenges in the European context.
Not recommended.......2005-11-03
I do not agree with the previous positive reviews.
First issue I have is with the language. The text is very wordy and convoluted. I do not find it clear and straightforward at all and, in my opinion, it does not make for a pleasant read. I think the problem might be due to the fact that the author is writing in English, not in his native language.
While there is (some) content, I found several questionable points, like statements that appear contradictory, explanations that do not make sense and factual inaccuracies.
If you are looking for a practical reference on how to manage and build a brand, how to systematically approach a real business situation, I would not recommend this book.
Highly Recommended !.......2005-03-02
This is an authoritative, well-researched textbook on global branding. Surprisingly, it reads lighter than its considerable bulk because author Jean-Noel Kapferer uses vivid examples of real companies and products to make his points. His branding war stories make the material easier to digest, but only to a point. This remains a textbook, with more than 50 tables in 497 pages, so don't expect to zip through it. However, it is an extremely useful single source about modern brand theory. If you are a casual marketer, as opposed to a serious student of branding, reap this book's rewards by referring to specific chapters to solve problems. You will find thorough answers and illuminating examples from companies worldwide. Kapferer keeps branding in perspective and recognizes that brands are built on successful businesses. We find this book genuinely valuable and strongly recommend it to anyone in marketing and corporate strategy development.

a highly informative look at Japan's economy.......2000-11-07
"Troubled Times" is a highly informative account of Japan's economy by a former employee of the US embassy in Tokyo. Some of the statistical material in chapter 2 would probably not pass muster with professional economists, but the description of bilateral trade negotiations between the US and Japan is the best around. Recommended reading for whomever takes office in January 2001.
Heavy-Handed account of Japan's Economy.......1999-11-13
Lincoln's previous book, Japan's Unbalanced Trade was written in 1990, but the way he constantly blurbs it in Troubled Times you would think it's the sequel. Never the less, Troubled Times (Brookings, 1999) builds on Lincoln's theme of a Japan that shortchanges its trading partners through protectionist measures, both lawful and structural.
The first half of Troubled Times is a mind-numbing malaise of number crunching. It's Lincoln at his best (or worst), presenting a litany of charts and graphs, accompanied by similarly disinterested text, that intimidates the reader. It compels him/her to meekly nod in agreement with his findings.
Lincoln summons the economic gods of Intra-Industry Trade, comparison pricing, Direct Investment (foreign and domestic)in order to make his points, at one time proclaiming:As the yen appreciated rapidly from 1993 to 1994, retailors did not adjust prices continuously(69). Interesting!
Yet, while Lincoln uses these numbers to blatantly intimidate and convince his reader of Japan's unfair trade practices (really, not trading enough), as well as its impact upon Japan's consumers, he also charges Japan with having a poor rural infrastructure ("What company would want to invest in a developed country where there are no flush toilets at home?"), and a "multi-layered " economy that acts as a non-tariff barrier. He dedicates more than a few pages to Japan's modern business culture, especially Japan's Amukadari (literally "descending from heavan") and keiretsu business relationships that make it difficult for foreign companies to establish in Japan, and promotes, in general, an inefficient system.
However, Lincoln's premise throughout is that Japan is developed, modern country. Which leads one to the question, how can an inefficient country, with poor rural infratructure, and an awkward (unique) business climate be considered mature, especially when you're comparing it to the ultimate hegemonic power?
Granted, Mr. Lincoln makes some exellent points that are well-taken. But, there is point at whihc one must stop and consider the situation. Japan, while light years ahead of Asian economies, has much of its development grounded in the post-war era. Despite the fact it was rebuilt by America, one cannot assume it IS America and compare it as so.
