As relevant now as when it was written.......2005-08-30

This work by the late great Venezuelan thinker Carlos Rangel is every bit as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1986. The book is a deconstruction of "thirdworldism", a marxism-inspired ideology prevalent in underdeveloped countries that asserts that all the ills of the third world are a result of exploitation by the rich capitalist countries.

Rangel shows the fallacy of thidworldism and the huge network of lies woven around it: Thirdworldism is an expedient device for crooked and ineffective politicians to avoid responsibility for their own actions, as well as a propaganda strategy for marxists everywhere (in fact, the main theses of thirdworldism were formulated in the Second Congress of the Communist International in Moscow). At the end, the ones not benefited by thirdworldism are the inhabitants of the third world themselves.

It may be thought that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, this book is not as relevant today as it was during the cold war. However, as recent events show in places such as Rangel's native Venezuela, marxism and thirdworldism are alive and well, and pushing for a comeback with their load of hatred of free markets, backwardness, and depauperating policies.

Rangel was a brilliant intellectual of uncomprimising honesty and bravery - a rare species in the Latin American intellectual landscape. If you like his work, or if you are interested in an honest explanation of why Latin America remains underdevelped while the US has become the most powerful country in the world, you should also read Rangel's masterpiece "Del Buen Salvaje al Buen Revolucionario" (translated into english as "The Latin Americans: Their love-hate relationship with the United States")

good for catching up to XPATH 2.0.......2004-02-16

I am already familiar with XSLT and XPATH 1.0 so i found the initial 5 chapters kinda dumbed down. the 6th chapter is interesting on XLINK and Xpointer but only the basics are shown here i wished a few real world implentations were used and i wish they went into XQuery more but i guess that would be another book. starting from chapter 7-12 gets interesting with all the different new functions and types in Xpath 2.0. It was an overal easy read and good for updating your XPath skills or read the initial 5 chapters to get a better view on Xpath. I would at least have an introductory experience with XSLT before u read this book although they explain intro XSLT as they go on. SUMMARY: for an intermediate, start reading from chapter 6.

Someone recommeded that I read this book and I was so happy they did. This book is so well written and very easy to understand. I have a tremendous fear of public speaking, and this book helped me overcome those fears. I am very grateful and highly recommend this book to anyone who has the same fears that I do!

Great stories-wonderful practical application!!!.......2002-11-18

This book sure was fun to read! Unlike most books about presentation skills, Kahrs makes this subject fun to read about. As a storyteller, Kahrs is a hysterically funny genius. The stories make sense and show the practical application of his methods. Kahrs writes very well, and I found myself not being able to put this book down.
Particularly helpful were the sections on rephrasing questions and recommendations for gesturing. Kahrs pinpoints and gives clear directions on what to do and how to do it, relative to public speaking skills.
My only negative comment, I wish that Chapter 8, which deals with dialogue skills would have been longer and had included more stories. Perhaps a writer as prolific as Kahrs is simply wetting our appetites for another well-written, fun-reading book.
Definitely worth the read and the money!

Good Tips & Ideas but BAD Writing!.......2002-05-28

Kahrs' book reflects his experience and subject matter expertise, but this is one of the most poorly written books I have ever come across. Grammatical, punctuation and spelling errors abound and I found it very distracting. The author's style comes across as unprofessional and uneducated and made it very difficult for me to take anything in the book seriously.

Till's book is wonderful! It is very easy to read, yet sophisticated enough for business people who really need to improve their public speaking skills. "Enhancing Your Presentation Skills" gives very specific tips on how to improve your presentation skills from physical skills development to designing effective visuals. I also found the section on handling tough Q & A to be invaluable. You can tell that Till Kahrs definitely has a high level of expertise in this area. Small wonder that he's the co-founder of PublicSpeakingSkills.com. I highly recommend this book to any business person who makes presentations, no matter how large or small the audience is. Definitely 5 Star material!

Best Book On The Subject That I've Read!!!.......2001-07-09

Excellent Book! This in-depth approach really takes Presentation Skills to a new level, especially the areas on eye-contact, physical skills, and organization/content. I recommend that candidates for public office on all levels of government use this public speaking tool. It is insightful, entertaining, and all of the concepts Till Kahrs presents in "Enhancing Your Presentation Skills" are right on target. Till shares his vast knowledge of this subject matter skillfully with his readers. It's obvious that Till Kahrs is a seasoned pro and that he has 'been there', and that's probably why "Presentations Magazine" gave this book such a great review in their May, 2001 issue. I'm delighted that I picked up this book. It's definitely well worth the money and I highly recommend it to anyone who speaks in public or gives presentations. Well done indeed!

I recommend this book highly as it has helped me when looking for another job and at performance evaluation time. The book contains information that explains why putting a skills portfolio together is helpful and explains ways of doing it. Every individual skills portfolio will be set up different, but they give you some good ideas and guidance on how to design your own and use it to your advantage. It proved to be a lot less time consuming then I thought it would be. I first learned of this book at a workshop during a conference put on by the International Association of Administrative Professionals (at that time the organization was called Professional Secretaries International). Another member in my chapter also put together a skills portfolio and had excellent results as well when interviewing. You do truly "blow people away" when you have thought enough to spend the time to put together your accomplishments, examples of your work, involvement in a professional organization etc. It can mean getting a bigger raise or higher starting salary when interviewing. Another book I would highly recommend is unfortunately out of print, but very beneficial to a job seeker in the administrative field. It's title is The Complete Job-Finding Guide for Secretaries and Administrative Support Staff. It is the only book that focuses on our field that I have discovered. I also learned about this book through Professional Secretaries International.

Simplistic.......2003-08-13

Although there was an abundance of very good resources in the appendices, I thought the book was more appropriate for a child managing their weekly allowance. Only someone who is just entering the professional world could appreciate Chapter 7, Finding A Job, which I found insulting. I was looking for the hows and whys of gaining and building wealth, not a contrast and comparision between African/European American wealth. It's time to stop perpetuating the disparity of wealth, (which is a fact) and get to the how to obtain wealth, no matter your race or ethnicity. If you want to learn the hows and whys of obtaining wealth, I recommend "The New Rules of Money," by Ric Edelman. I think this Harvard/Columbia graduated brother is out of touch. Maybe this is his attempt to give back to the community he would sooner visit on a map than in person. (o.k. that's harsh, but necessary!)

How to Get Rich When You Ain't Got Nothing is a how-to manage your finances guide for African Americans. This guide is to show them how to get out of debt, invest, and literally save them selves into the "rich" house.

African Americans are labeled consumers rather than investors or the like. Mr. Miller first asks his readers to decide what "rich" is to them. Once that is decided he then begins the discussion of spending habits and shows how historically African Americans have been victims of discriminatory practices and wasteful spending. Swiftly he moves the reader into a basic plan for finances, dealing with income issues, finding a job, entrepreneurial advice, the hidden enemy and many more ideas toward financial wealth. This book also includes a sixty-four-page appendix with everything from addresses for State Directors of Adult Education to Regional Securities and Exchange Commission Offices.

Melvin B. Miller has written a book designed to change your thinking about money. It is all laid out simply and has little personal antidotes in order to point out practicality and make it relatable. I believe that this book is an ideal start for someone who wants to gain control of their financial future without being overwhelmed with technical jargon and intimidating information.

I love everything about this book, from the title to the way it's laid out on the page. This a step by step primer explaining the mysteries of money and saving, and the all important step: investing. It is an excellent resource and should be in every home and school--especially the schools.

I bought this book a while ago. I have not put it into practice yet, but from the perspective of the information made available, it is very good. Granted, there is some stuff at the beginning that is fairly rudimientary to a computer person, but I think the author's intention was to make a book that anyone could pick up and use. There is some pretty sophisticated stuff that she goes into a lot of detail about in terms of analyzing the potential of various items to sell, various keywords, etc. It seems to me like she is actually giving away a ton of valuable information for a reasonable price, and I would definitely recommend this book, if you want a hands-on, practical guide to the nuts and bolts of affiliate marketing. She goes into a lot of detail about different tools to use, etc.

Four Words: Don't Buy This Book........2005-02-05

I am an experienced web developer, and have signed up with Affiliate Networks some time ago. I thought I could gain more tips to improve my business by reading this book. I was fooled that a book with this sticker price was worth it.

The first 100 pages discuss Excel, Word, Internet Explorer, search engines, ftp, and making a simple web page. The publisher should be ashamed to sell this book for more than $9.00. It has large print, and much useless "bla bla bla...

Do you know how to use Word, Excel, and FrontPage? Can you search the Internet for this keyword: "Affiliate Programs" then you are on your way. I am sending this book back to Amazon, it is a rip off, and feel very ripped off and violated. This book should be pulled from the market, or sold for $9.99.

Where is the ZERO Star rating? I wish Amazon had it.
