It is a very informative book with useful information for anyone working in Indian Country. The economical development of the tribes and the financial stability of its members is an important factor in future developement. This book was well researched and can be used by the layperson as well as the professional.

Tiller's Guide... Great resource.......2000-04-15

Tiller's Guide is an invaluable resource for the serious student or those who work with tribes on a professional basis. History and culture is kept to a minimum, while emphasis is placed on infrastructure, resources, demographics and economic development. This was a massive undertaking. The next step is keeping it current- a task equally as difficult. Problematic areas: By the time info updated, it will be out of date again. Also, for whatever reason, a few tribes have not been included.

Bad Book on Websphere Studio.......2001-09-13

This isn't a good book on Websphere Studio at all. Organization is bad, examples and explanations are bad; they don't enter into the pitfalls and difficulties and how to deal with them. Do yourself a favor; steer clear of this book - go to the redbooks instead.

I don't think this is the book you are looking for..........2001-07-22

This is an outdated book. Disappointing. I bought it at the time since it was like the only book about websphere. Today you have more choices.

The book is far behind the current Websphere version - you will find that installing, administering, and even running the websphere test environment on visualage for java are now different.

The book is not a "beginners only" book, it has a lot of chapters on enterprise features (CORBA, IBM San Francisco, EJB on Websphere, Connectors, Tivoli enablement modules, etc) but if you are after such advanced features, I'm sure you'll appreciate a more up to date reference.

If you will work with Websphere as a *developer*, probably a good starting point for beginners would be to get the IBM redbook: "Servlet and JSP programming with IBM Websphere Studio and Visualage for Java". (This book does not refer to the latest version either, but its contents are not so much version specific.) The printed version can be found at Amazon, and you can get a soft copy from the IBM redbook site. This book has only one chapter specific to websphere application server - about configuring, adminstering, maintaining- but that would be enough to get started. No EJB's, no connectors, only servlets, jsp's, sessions, and the standard edition of websphere.

A not-a-recommended book.......2001-06-21

The looks and feel make a person feel he's got much more than he intended to get. But the first few chapters itself reveal the lack of proper synchronization between the book and the accompanying CD. Not even 10% of the pics match with the actual screens.

Overall, this book is recommended if a person wants to learn websphere for the heck of learning.

Not a Good Book for Hands On.......2001-04-23

As you browse through this book, it looks very impressive but when you try to use the CD-ROM with what they are talking about in the book, there is a great disappointment.

No code examples on the CD-ROM and illustrations don't match with the software provided on the CD-ROM. Looks like there is some disconnect between CD-ROM maker and the author of this book.

Good Book for the WebSphere Novices.......2001-04-14

Last week I finally got a chance to start reading the book, on a very long flight to Asia. Great Stuff! The book is very readable, and is true to the title by focusing on being a starter-kit. This book is an excellent way to get going with Websphere. I was a bit put off by all the flak this book got on the various postings here, but hey - did these guys not notice the "Starter" word on the book cover?

Having a bit of experience with servlets and JSPs using Apahce/Tomcat I was eager to plunge into all of these as well as EJB. The book is certainly a good way to do all that, although a separate EJB book could come in handy. My only important reservation is that a new edition MUST be published to update this to WebSphere 3.5 or at least 3.0.

Helpful AND interesting.......2000-11-21

Ellen and Michael Dowling have written a superior book. It gets to the point and is an entertaining read as well as instructional. This is not a small feat for a book about presentations, something I consider usually very dry.

The book is written for the professional presenter who wants to improve his abilities. However, I also find it helpful for the occasional presenter. The book gives you some dynamic techniques that should help whether you are presenting at a convention and need to address hundreds of people, at a high powered business meeting and you really need to impress those present, or if you (like me) are presenting to a small group of colleagues over a friendly rotating monthly lunch.

You might find that people actually listen, hear, and are interested in what you have to say after following several of Ellen's and Michael's suggestions.

Nice how-to material on the electronic resume, content and formatting. Could profit from including analysis of effectiveness of resume-posting on job sites. If you are interested email me. I am collecting Web job hunting resources available for WI jobs, and found a couple of good references in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to creat an electronic resume.

If you are told to "get your affairs in order", it makes you think you are approaching your final days on earth and you better get your legal and financial information together so your loved ones won't have to after your passing. Well, if you are faced with that unfortunate situation, this book would definitely be what you need. The title however, unfairly limits this books ability to appeal to the masses... and the masses should definitely have this book!

This book is for everyone... old or young, healthy or unhealthy, rich or poor. It is written in an easy to follow checklist format and even has the checklists duplicated and perforated in the back of the book for your imediate hands-on use. Each chapter makes you think long and hard about finances, insurance, retirement plans, legal issues and estate planning, credit and credit history, and taxes.

If you are not an organized person, it gives you a great system for compiling and keeping your records accessible and up to date. If you are an organized person, you will LOVE this book, because it is so thorough and systematic that you will be anxious to impliment those ideas you may not have thought of.

For instance, if your purse or wallet was stolen or misplaced, would you be able to instantly list it's typical contents and information associated with it's contents? Clarence L. "Kelly" Johnson joined Lockheed in the 1930s and immediately put his imprint on the company's products. He argued successfully to install a twin tail on the Electra airliner, thereby improving its stability. He continued infuencing designs at the company for the next forty years. This book was very disappointing but I should have known it would be. Walter Boyne finds it difficult, if not impossible to write negatively about aviation issues unless those issues involve threats to his beloved Air Force. He follows true to his nature in Beyond the Horizons: The Lockheed Story. I had hoped to find a book the equal to Flying High (the story of Boeing). Beyond the Horizons should have been a book that discussed the successes and failures of Lockheed in such a way that a reader could learn from them. I, at least, expected an honest analysis of the L-1011 fiasco but instead read that it was a great airplane and pilots loved it. This should have been a book about a business that manufactures airplanes not a book centered on the airplanes manufactured. Readers wanting to learn about Lockheed as a business should read The Skunk Works by Ben Rich. It provides an excellent view into the business (and politics) of aircraft manufacturing. Mr. Boyne's book is another of his many books glorifying the US Air Force and the industries that support and depend on it.
