5 out of 5 stars Working Pretty Good So Far.......2007-03-03

Most businesses typically give credit to their regular customers it increases sales, makes it more convenient for everyone involved, and is generally speaking good busines sense. But then there is the percentage who don't pay their bill. What do you do then?

In my case the amount owed to me was too small to interest a collection agency, but big enough that it would have a significant impact on my own income. I then got a copy of this book. The author claims to have a bunch of years of expeience in credit and debt collection. And the book reads like she knows what she is talking about.

Perhaps the most important thing is that there are a bunch of legal rules that limit what you can do. After that she gives you some ideas about what to say either on the phone or in a letter -- which are also on a CD included with the book.

I haven't gotten everything collected yet, and I can't say that I enjoy the process. But I've made pretty good progress and it's something that has to be done.

    Book Description

Is creativity the enemy of usability? How do you judge the success of a person's experience interacting with a web enterprise? Is the effectiveness of an online resource defined only by how "usable" it is? In Train of Thoughts, web strategy and design consultant John C. Lenker Jr. provides insight into how web enterprises must interact with people to be successful in the twenty-first century.

Train of Thoughts is non-technical and written not only for web designers and developers, but also for any stakeholder in a web enterprise that has a vested interest in ensuring that their online resources become more meaningful and valuable. In this book, you'll learn to understand what motivates people's online behavior and then convert that motivation into online results; communicate with people effectively online so that they really understand what the value proposition of an online resource is; combine forward-thinking information design techniques with systems that pave experiential pathways for people to journey along in pursuit of their interests and goals; properly employ personalization to build relationships; understand the true role of creativity online; uncover screen-space designs that aid and inspire the mind; reconcile business objectives with stakeholder needs; approach process in a way that keeps projects on time, on budget, and on target; create online resources that actually work when they're completed; and actualize creative vision appropriately for the web.

5 out of 5 stars Lenker captures what it is that appeals to the simple minded.......2004-06-08

After reading some other books on the topic, I got the impression that some of these authors are so intellectual (or trying so hard to be), that they forget the fact that 99% of the world is simple, uninterested, and in a hurry. In this book, John captures and analyzes what it is that stimulates the average mind. He challenges you to understand the people that realistically you aim to target as a web designer. Today after reading this book, I feel like a more cognizant, perceptive person as it relates to what it is that makes me click - no pun intended.

4 out of 5 stars Good 'Thoughts'... slightly hard to follow........2004-03-16

Mr. Lenker has done an excellent job of bringing to the forefront an issue that has begun to plague many otherwise well-intentioned Web sites: the focus on usabilty as the exclusive barometer of Web site design success. As a Web designer/producer, I applaud his efforts to keep usability in perspective with the other important attributes of a well-designed user experience.
I did find the book a little difficult to read because of its formatting, but I appreciate the reinforcement of 'visitor experience' based on more than usability that Mr. Lenker provides.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but over designed.......2003-12-25

This book is not one that is easily read. The pages are heavily designed graphic design treats, but the text and the messages play second fiddle to the layouts, distracting full color background images, and other visually focused entertainments and explorations. This book perhpas makes for a coffee table book, or a book to flip through to find ocassional inspiration, but not much more. The written ideas are lost in the visuals.

4 out of 5 stars Well, at least this train ain't Amtrak..............2002-10-23

......or is it? After all, one design firm they profile in this book already went defunct. At least the book has the honesty to tell you that upfront.

Actually, I've been waiting for a book like this for some time. In my 6+ years of designing sites and 5+ years of doing Flash, I always try to stray away from the cookie-cutter, portal, hit-em-over-the-head approach so many websites try to do ala Yahoo. Considering the city where I currently call home, New Orleans, isn't the most sophisticated and well-educated city going, you can imagine how so many people here get so confused going to sites like that. Instead, I try to sell each individual website as an experience in which you really do feel like you're part of the atmosphere that the client is trying to produce with the brand.

TOT effectively explains this in full detail. Promoting simplicity in most cases over the whack-a-mole approach or the extreme simplicity (read: usability) of Nielsen. Kind of interesting then that Lenker bashes Nielsen BUT praises his partner in crime for actually figuring it out.

While definitely not your typical web design book (you won't learn Flash or Dreamweaver here.) The book is loaded with lots of inspirational sites and ideas to reinvigorate your mind better than any can of Red Bull could ever do. (Personally, I prefer 180 over Red Bull. 180's got a better orang-y taste....oh wait.....this isn't epicurious.com now is it?) I thoroughly enjoyed the book and i think it'll definitely get people talking.

Now let's just hope these ideas won't make us as bankrupt as Amtrak is........

    5 out of 5 stars New Thinking.......2002-08-17

The best pieces of work in art, music and literature always stir extremely strong emotions in people. An audience's reception to the 'New' is always varied, as understanding and preconceptions (in the case of 'Train of Thoughts', the way in which we view and understand the web experience) are challenged. This is nothing but a good thing.

Instead of advocating archaic rules and conventions that are merely reactionary to the mistakes made in the last few years, 'Train of Thoughts' takes steps to review and proactively improve/expand upon the manner in which we communicate and do business on the web in the future. The views here are a world away from Nielsen et al - and as such are extremely valuable for at the very least providing balance to the usability argument, and at the most, changing your perception of what is and isn't a good website and providing you with new ways to approach your work.

I have been in the web industry in the UK for 6 years now, and I have a constant battle to change perceptions in people - both within the company I work for, and in clients (potential and existing) of the company I work for. This book is going to be a great help to me in changing those perceptions.

Whether you agree with John Lenker's views or not (for the record - I do), this is a fantastic book that every web professional whether design or business focused (or both) should read.

5 out of 5 stars The Holy Grail for Federal Job Seekers !.......2007-10-11

Consider the "Federal Resume Guidebook, Fourth Edition," as the bible for serious federal job seekers. A few months ago I attended a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) class before I retired from the Air Force. The TAP instructor lightly covered federal resumes, KSA's, etc., I was totally confused. Family, friends, and former co-workers all provided me with advice on how a federal resume should be written, formatted, and distributed. After several misses on the job market I decided to purchase this book. HALLELUJAH ! This book will take you step-by-step on the federal resume process with some excellent federal resume samples you can use on your quest for a career with government agencies. I also decided to invest in the Entry-Level and Mid-Level Assessment Service offered by the authors company, The Resume Place. If your are serious about your federal job search I strongly suggest you purchase this service. You will not be disappointed. One last item, the author Ms. Kathryn Troutman personally provided me with the assessment and offered some great suggestions I had overlooked when I created my resume. WoW, what great customer service. This book certainly deserves a "Five Stars" plus rating. I'm certain I will catch the attention of the federal agencies where I want to work.

5 out of 5 stars An indispensable and invaluable reference guide.......2007-10-07

Of special note is Troutman's advice for those transitioning from military service to a federal career, and for those transitioning from Wage Grade to General Schedule positions. With instruction on preparing for the new Behavioral Interview process and strategies for advancing a federal career, the "Federal Resume Guidebook" continues to be an indispensable and invaluable reference guide for job seekers regardless of the federal position being sought after. Simply stated, the "Federal Resume Guidebook" is essential for anyone seeking federal employment and is a fundamentally necessary addition to personal, professional, academic, governmental job center, and community library Jobs/Careers reference collections.

I found this the to be the best book on the federal application process yet. The examples were detailed as well as the explainations with plenty of examples for the professional GS jobs. As far as it's effectiveness... we'll see.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-05-31

I just wanted to say I got more reaction from the new improved Fed Resume. However, I also changed my regular business resume also and got a job in the regular business world first before the Federal employment world. I do think it works and when I am done with my education, I plan on continuing using this method.

        5 out of 5 stars Write a Winning Resume.......2007-05-24

I purchased the book and what a difference it made in creating a resume with some pop. The chapters were easy to follow step by step. It really helped me transform my resume into something worth reading. Also the comments in each chapter were very helpful in bringing to light the many hats I wear at my current job and I was able to translate that knowledge into the qualifications described in the job announcements. It is well worth the investment. If you are truly serious about getting a job with the federal government, then this book is a must.

I received this book and think it's great! Thanks loads!!
Congratulations on a product that's certain to help a lot of government employees succeed where otherwise they might not. Having served on numerous selection panels in the past, I often wondered why so many employees "missed the boat" on putting together a "sellable" application. Now, that shouldn't happen anymore. Bought the book. Landed a GS-9 job.

How's that for a book review?

The math: The book is on the expensive side, but you have to think of the cover price as an investment. Put another way: now I'm making more money than I made when I was on active military duty (I'm a retired grunt; retired Sgt. First Class pay plus GS-9 pay equals more than active duty Sgt. First Class pay).

Federal Resumix Guidebook how-to in short: It teaches you how to organize your past employment experiences into a consolidated nonstandard resume that contains the actual words GS managers may be using to search for employees.

The book causes you to think of the Resumix system as a search engine looking for you. Does that make sense? :-)

Book offers resume-writing tips for Defense civilians

        By Kellie Lunney

Federal employees and those aspiring to work in the government need to master the art of electronic resume writing, according to a new book from a federal resume expert.

Kathy Kraemer Troutman's Electronic Federal Resume Guidebook provides readers seeking civilian jobs in the Defense Department with advice on navigating Resumix, the department's electronic database for managing resumes.

The Defense Department uses Resumix software to manage resumes and search for qualified candidates. The transition from a paper-based system to an electronic system means that Defense employees and potential applicants have had to brush up on their computer and resume writing skills, according to Troutman. Under the electronic resume system, applicants submit their resumes for specific positions, and hiring officials search the resume database to find an applicant with the right mix of qualifications.

"I believe the electronic system is here to stay and that it will be better in the long run. If you can write a good resume and understand the application process, you can master this," writes Troutman.

Troutman, a former columnist on careers for GovExec.com, includes advice on writing and editing resumes, a brief history of the Resumix system, and a soup- to-nuts description of how automated human resources systems work. A CD-ROM that contains electronic resume samples and official job kits accompanies the book.

Special tips ("One resume is the best for today's electronic job search") and inside information ("Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force agencies require self-nominations for announcements") are sprinkled throughout the book, and Troutman provides a review summarizing the section's main ideas at the end of each chapter.

Most of the book is devoted to crafting the perfect electronic resume with tips ranging from how to incorporate keywords that will yield successful job matches through Resumix to avoiding bureaucratic jargon.

A list of dos and don'ts in the electronic resume process includes:

*Do research keywords, skills and industry language.

*Do limit experience to recent jobs and jobs that directly support your qualifications

*Do keep acronyms to a minimum.

*Do write with nouns and verbs in the active voice.

*Don't submit extra documentation unless requested. *Don't use phrases like "responsible for," or "worked with." *Don't fax your resume.

        *Don't repeat yourself.

The Electronic Federal Resume Guidebook is Troutman's second book. The Federal Resume Guidebook was published in 1995.

5 out of 5 stars Booklist Review by David Rouse.......2001-01-21

Camp tailors financial advice specifically to the medical profession with a regular column that appears in Physician's Money Digest and Dentist's Money Digest. He is also the author of MONEY: 127 Answers To Your Most Asked Financial Questions (1995). He now answers 338 new questions in this compilation of queries sent to him by readers of his columns and by those who have heard or seen him on the financial talk-show circuit. His simple, straightforward question and answer format is arranged into 10 categories: evaluating investments, economic influences, understanding stocks and bonds, planning for retirement, IRA's, reducing taxes, paying for college, estate planning, insurance and home ownership and personal and family matters. Included are interviews with eight leading financial experts, such as Harry Dent and Jeremy Siegel. Although much of the advice targets doctors who have medical practices, there are also plenty of tips for anyone concerned about his or her financial health.-

This same author published "Money Matters Made Easy" some years ago, and it did more than most financial books do, it gave both the beginner and the oldtime investor an overview of how to plan, execute, and follow through with investment ideas, through questions and answers. Now this new book adressed to doctors, in the same format, but also just as revelant to the average person, covers many more subjects, and has excellent interviews with 2 of the most astute and knowledgeable persons in the financial field. This book is a must for very household.

5 out of 5 stars Especially for Doctors.......2000-10-20

This is an example of a well-targeted book: the 750,000 doctors in the United States. It is a book doctors will identify with. But much of the advice, tips and insight will benefit anyone who wishes to build wealth.

The chapters cover evaluating investments, economic influences, understanding stocks and bonds, planning for retirement, IRAs, reducing taxes, paying for college, estate planning, insurance/home ownership, and personal/family matters. The book is an interview with answers to 338 financial questions categorized into chapters. The busy physician will find the book easy to read between patients, as most questions/answers are less than a page long.

        Book Description

During the 1990s, with the shift from Communism to capitalism, the "roving bandits", big business or the oligarchs, stole Russia. They gained influence over President Yeltsin and his government and gradually shaped policy in their own interests. In the first comprehensive attempt to explain why Russia took the course it did, Martin McCauley names names. He examines the period through the prism of government, including Yeltsin's shadow government, the military, police, security and intelligence services. Relations between Moscow and the regions, industry, agriculture, social policy and foreign policy are also explored.

Martin McCauley is a specialist on the region and has published more than 20 books on the former Soviet Union and East Germany. He frequently appears as a commentator on regional issues on radio and TV in the UK and the US, and also acts as an investment consultant for companies considering investment in Russia, Eastern Europe and the Baltic States.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book based on secondary sources.......2004-12-12

Those critics on this page that compare McCauley to the Economist magazine are right. If you enjoy the Economist, you'll enjoy this book, which is also fast paced, demands a understanding of economics, and is written largely in the present tense, which makes it readable. The author sprinkes jokes with the material. I did not get the sense that the author was no-government laisse faire (to the contrary), so don't think this is just a pro-capitalist "Ann Ryan" type rant.

Very good book based on secondary sources. I do not feel this book was anti-Russian, just realistic.

        1 out of 5 stars stinks.......2003-09-20

This book was lacklustre. Just more of the attitudes you find in the Economist.

Unless you want a case study of wearisome prejudice and crazy theories, give it a pass.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2003-08-23

I got this book thinking I could get some objective insights into Russia's severe economic difficulties throughout the 90s. Instead, I got a long rant against everything Russian. Particularly dubious is McCauley's sympathy for the Wahhabi bin Laden-sponsored Islamofascists in Chechnya who have been responsible for all kinds of atrocities. I guess their suicide bombings are justified, because they kill evil Russians and not members of the English Royal Family? Oh well. Sergio Vieira de Mello was an apologist for Islamofascists too, but they still murdered him regardless.

        1 out of 5 stars Absurd.......2003-02-27

Yet another British anti-Russian book. We've heard and seen it all before.

The most tiresome thing is the petty Putin "KGB spy" scaremongering. It is time to move on, Martin.

        1 out of 5 stars Amazing........2002-12-28

Mr. McCauley amazes. How a man could apparently spend 20 years in a field and still know next to nothing on it is remarkable. One school of thought has it that either McCauley is learning disabled or is so filled with xenophobic, patronising Brit-hate he fails to take notice of the reality outside his prejudice.

His perspective is typically British - "Everyone is rubbish but us". His hated Russia has made Space Stations, sent men into space, built modern fighter aircraft and has an excellent educational system, none of which the UK can claim as achievements. Internet use is far more common and widespread in Russia than the UK - because the UK has rotting 1940s phone lines and massively overpriced phone billing. In Moscow, trains run on time. In London, trains occasionally run on time. Unlike the UK, Russia has a democratically elected Head of State. Russia may be behind the UK in the world of Fast Food, Punk Rock and Football Hooligans, but it is far ahead in other areas.
