For most of us, the term virtual money means financial transactions into the Internet. But virtual money has been around for decades, since the first electronic-funds transfer. Even the mundane automatic teller machine runs on virtual money. Yet, as Solomon points out, until virtual money hit the Internet, most of us considered the topic deathly dull. Now that it's grabbed the headlines, she takes the opportunity to show us how it's been truly fascinating all along.
The book begins with a brief but firm grounding in how money developed, from the days of barter, through gold and currency, to plastic and electrons. She goes on to paint today's monetary world as a system both intricate in its complexity and Zen-like in its sensitivity, where corrections must be made with a light touch and where attempts to control it result in loss of control. She also looks at the intriguing cases that crop up as each new innovation gives the unscrupulous new ways to cheat the system and she examines how clever safeguards are eventually put into place.
Then, Solomon goes on to explore the still-developing future of virtual money. Here, we see not only the conveniences and benefits that will result but also the mechanics behind them, as intricate and mesmerizing as watchworks. Yet Solomon never overloads us with so much detail that tedium sets in. Instead, she shows us the pieces coming together like some organic, self-organizing puzzle and lets us both enjoy and anticipate its emerging form.
Book Description
The amount of virtual money that circles the globe every day is truly staggering. The Federal Reserve's Fedwire and the New York-based CHIPS alone send out well over $2 trillion daily. Retail systems such as credit and debit cards deliver several hundred billion more. In fact, the combined dollar flow in one day equals over one-third of our gross domestic product for the entire year. Trillions of dollars of ethereal money soar around the globe, perched atop a very narrow "real" money base, and with the recent dramatic growth of the Internet, these vast numbers can only grow. In Virtual Money, the first book-length account of the electronic money phenomenon, economist Elinor Harris Solomon takes us on a fascinating tour of money's brave new world, offering an informative look at the pluses and minuses of virtual money in its myriad forms. Solomon provides a wide ranging introduction to electronic monies, describing in down-to-earth terms how each system works. Starting on familiar ground, with gold and paper money, she examines the growth of the credit card from the mid-sixties, when it was a status symbol for the wealthy, to its present nearly universal use throughout America, and she offers an engaging discussion of exotic new e-monies, such as "Smart Cards," e-cash, electronic wallets, and cybermoney, as well as upcoming innovations such as electronic benefits transfers (EBT), which may replace food stamps by 1999. Equally important, the book offers a clear picture of the advantages and disadvantages of electronic money. Clearly there are great benefits to consumers, investors, and corporations, as goods and services competing in world markets can be purchased instantly from anywhere across the globe. Yet there are hazards as well. For instance, the very size of virtual money movements creates an enormous float that exceeds the amount of monetary reserves to back it up at any given moment. Digital glitches can mean chaos, as in 1995 when a snafu that delayed the opening of Wall Street's Big Board by just 60 minutes caused the Nasdaq Composite to fall 27 points. Moreover, we face increased risks of fraud, piracy, and invasion of privacy, as well as threats to national security. Solomon takes us inside the world of international money laundering--a three-hundred-billion-dollar-a-year business--to show how today's vast electronic wire transfers help conceal illegal activities. For example, in 1994, two agents for American Express Bank International were convicted on eleven counts of money laundering and four counts of deceiving the Federal Reserve. Their countless wire transfers of seven figures had proved far simpler than smuggling duffel bags of cash across the border. Whether describing sophisticated encryption methods, or the Russian computer hacker who managed to steal $400,000 from Citicorp, or the behind-the-scenes transactions of a simple credit card charge, Virtual Money is an illuminating look at a very recent phenomenon, one that can only grow in importance.
Customer Reviews:
OK, it's a bit academic, but I found it helpful........2001-08-14
Speaking as a layman who had practically no knowledge of e-commerce I found the book to be a good introduction to the world of electronic money and of what the future of money will probably be (Personally, I don't like what I see). Along with the history of money, and the development of the Internet, the book contains a lot of detail on the nuts and bolts of the whole complex network; and I don't know how interesting that is to the average person. I read this book not for pleasure, but as research for a paper I am now composing on a related issue. Regarding the topic of virtual money, the author seems to discuss the problems and risks surrounding it rather than give concrete solutions. But neither the publisher nor the author described the work as an "answer book". From what I can see, the write up on the book's dust jacket is an accurate summary of what the book contains.
Vague babble.......1999-08-30
This was a real disappointment. The book is almost unreadable. Terms are defined and then not used properly or are jumbled together--you never can tell what she's talking about. Too many vague generalities. Sentences often make no sense. This book desperately needs an editor. I don't think the author has anything interesting to say about "virtual money," but it's hard to tell. A confusing jumble of babble. Click on to the next book.
Disappointing.......1999-03-02
This book had a lot of promise.. I was very interested in learning more about the world of Electronic Commerce and how local and global economies are being impacted. This book made a few interesting points, but for the most part was tedious to read, and never got into enough detail on any one subject to be interesting.
I'm still looking for another e-commerce roadmap...

The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first Century

Customer Reviews:
Great book about new technologies.......2002-05-10
Amor provides a very good book about upcoming technologies. It also provides a good outlook on the relevant services that can be expected from these technologies. One minor issue is that he also explains technologies like GSM and SMS and not only the hype stuff like wireless lan and G3. The second part of the book is even more interesting, because it provides four scenarios that give good insight on how the world will look like in a few years time.
The future is here! In this book!.......2002-01-31
Daniel Amor provides a short introduction to the future that is about to happen. He provides some insight into new technologies, but more important into new business cases. He even provides simple ROI calculations, which is great. I am a professor at university and can use these cases with my students. A pity that there are only four in the book, but I found two more on his web site for free. Good work, keep it up!
excellent reading.......2001-12-01
After his first book, The E-Business (R)Evolution, Daniel Amor created a new book in the same style as the first one. Instead of talking too much about technology and businesses, he created scenarios, which incorporate technology and business cases and put both of them into context. The book is of interest for people that want to develop new ideas on the Internet. I am eagerly awaiting the next book.
beautifully written, elegantly thought out book.......2001-10-24
Pervasive computing is a concept that is so broad, so inclusive, that it is hard to define. From the readily appreciated idea of personal digital assistants that are hooked up to the internet via digital cell phones to cars with GPS devices that tell computers where they are and receive back data on avoiding traffic jams, the potential for the field is vast. And exciting.
Daniel Amor, an internet expert who works for Hewlett Packard in Germany, has put together a beautifully written, elegantly thought out book on what pervasive computing will be. He covers a huge territory from the web today to the migration of wired services to wireless space: mobile architecture, mobile apps, home automation, business automation, services to be, and structures to be.
There are imaginative case studies of services that pervasive computing will permit: web-based reporting of credit card theft, objects with tiny chips reporting their whereabouts to police when stolen, even toothbrushes with medical diagnostic chips reporting to a user or a dentist what is wrong with the user's teeth.
The last case suggests the current problem with pervasive computing. The technology to make it happen exists, but users have not demanded anything like it. The talking refrigerator that orders more milk is widely ridiculed. Do we want a toothbrush to call a dentist? Socks to call a podiatrist to report a case of athlete's foot? An antacid pill that could report to an physician?
The solution is to have third party administration of all this intimate data, Mr. Amor says. Many would disagree, suggesting that the cure is not to collect it at all. Currently, wireless security is not as strong as hardwired network security can be. And even that is fragile, given advances in password cracking.
In a developing world of wireless services, pervasive computing is likely to grow in unpredictable ways. At the threshold of this new world, Daniel Amor's Internet Fuure Strategies has done a masterful job of mapping what may be. His work is superb, his insights often remarkable. If pervasive computing is part of your work, get the book.
Architect of the future.......2001-10-10
Daniel Amor provides a very innovative way of presenting technologies and business cases of the future. Instead of describing Technology on a technology level and Business on a business level, he provides cases, which are easy to understand and include architecture blueprints for both, Technology and Business. Anyone that is interested in understanding the future of the Internet will be able to do so, both laypeople and professionals.

Customer Reviews:
How to locate satisfying jobs.......2003-10-10
Janet Farley's Jobs And The Military Spouse appears in its updated second edition to cover the problems of military spouses who face exciting new job opportunities as they participate in the modern job market. Military spouses used to work below their abilities in the support of their mates; this tells them how to locate satisfying jobs by taking advantage of a network of contacts and compiling an inviting career history.
No different than any other job hunting book..........2000-08-24
I was under the impression this book would have specifics that are unique to the military spouse on job hunting and finding the best careers which mesh with that of a military sponsor (other than nursing, teaching and joining the military yourself). Other than throwing in some depressing information about how people won't hire military spouses because they move too often, she wrote a book that could have just been titled "How To Find A Job," throwing in the words "military spouse" every now and then. While this information is good for any job hunting person, she does not really give enough information that makes this process any easier for a military spouse. If you want a good job finding book get "What Color Is Your Parachute." This one won't help you any more than it or any others just because it's title has "Military Spouse" in it. She neglects to mention in her book that it's so difficult to find a decent job near a military installation because so many spouses are willing to work for minimum wage if you'll just give them a title.
A Solid Job Hunting Resource.......1998-11-26
"Jobs and the Military Spouse" is a must-have primer on job hunting for military spouses. It is a great reference on traditional methods and the essential fundamentals for clarifying your goals and initiating a job search. I highly recommend it to military spouses new to the employment arena, or those needing to brush up on their basic career planning skills.

Best financial book for visual learners.......2006-03-29
Whether you are a left brained or a right brained, understanding the big picture in finances is a key to achieve big wealth. I am sort of a visual learner. I don't particularly like reading thick books with detailed info. It reminds me of those bookworms & CPAs with thick glasses :) I was always scared of accounting & finances until I found this book which makes all the boring financial stuff extremely interesting & easy!! I highly recommend this book.
A must-have for anyone befuddled by personal finances.......1999-09-27
From the first page to the last, this book not only offers to-the-point lucid descriptions but performs that task in an entertaining way.
Excellent, easy read for all the financial info you need.......1998-10-15
This book explains complicated financial information in an easy-to-understand format. I use this book for my tax clients to help them understand issues involved with obtaining a mortgage, understanding mutual funds and investing, and how to save money for retirement. Even if you shy away from financial issues because they are boring, you'll love this book. It gives you the same information a long boring book gives you in simple, easy-to-understand examples you will relate to. You don't even have to read the entire book. It's like a finanical library, pick out the topic that interests you and read it to learn what you need to know in just a few minutes. I love the part on insurance, explains all the things no one ever taught me. The part on investing cleared up questions I've wondered about. My clients love it. If you are in business, it makes a nice thank you gift for clients. They are really impressed with the book.
Best Book on personal finance, great for right-brainers too........1997-03-13
This is the best book on personal finance I have ever seen. The books cuts out all the boring financial stuff and you are left with the 'gems' of what you really need to know to manage your money. It starts with the "big picture" and explains in terms everyone can understand. Highly reccomended for a graduation gift for high school or college or as a wedding gift. Wish I had known all this when I was younger. Even simplifies taxes. No household should be without it

It ain't over....yet........2006-03-31
Its true my family was sucked into this Pelham Humphries deal. But, my family has been trying to get this inheritance since the 1920's. My uncle, Wayne Hodge, has taken up the charge since Brown Peragoy was handed his hat by the Texas judiciary. He sends out notices every once in a while and is still asking for money so they can "take it to court". I say all this to let everyone know that it ain't over for everybody.
NOW: I really enjoyed the book and read it from cover to cover in about two days. I learned a lot about the Meaders and their own set of problems. I would have liked to have gotten more story line rather than all the documentation. Most of the documentation and maps I had seen before over the years.
Great book, learned alot about other land scandels in Texas.......1999-07-24
I read the book and it was awesome, I can relate to it, as being an heir to Griffith League here in Texas, and the troubles involved, no clear titles, burnt down courhouses, and lawyers, Mexican Colonization Laws, Civil War, oil money and justice. Why even put money in escrow when nobody is ever going to get it. Maybe this will be his next book.
The Original Texas "Land Deal".......1999-03-12
"What a tangled web we weave, when we practice to make a quick buck!" If you like dealing in real estate, you're going to love this book. Shaffer's surgical precision in slicing this juicy story open slowly and humorously was impressive. I now know more about the conveyance of real estate, East Texas history, and lawyers' greed than I ever thought I wanted to know! But after reading this book, now I am curious about what is next door to Spindletop. More oil? More killings? Maybe Shaffer will tell us in another book?
Texas heritage and history are interestly refreshed........1998-11-29
We, as Texans, take pride in our culture. Without the efforts of our descendants and immigrants, the land granted in 1834 to Pelham William Humphries from Empresario Lorenzo de Zavala may have never occured. History came alive in Spindletop Unwound. Thanks from Marilyn Early.
I loved it.......1997-08-10
The famous Spindletop gusher spewed more than oil. It's a tale of the real scams and dangers that go hand in with big money, with cast of REAL CHARACTERS you can really sink your teeth into
