4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-01-11

This book is very helpful in case that your aim is to construct a basement for unit root and cointegration study. The language of the book is clear and easy to follow. Besides the introduction and explanation of different methods, it compares different methods by using recent empirical studies.

5 out of 5 stars Very good high level introduction book.......2005-12-18

This book gives very good high level semi-technical review and introduction on the many different techniques in the areas of unit root and cointegration. This is a good starting point if you want to get into this new area. It also lists quite complete references based on which you can start your development and research work.

5 out of 5 stars modern econometrics with latest developments.......2001-07-03

This is a book on specialized topics in econometric modeling. Like Franses recent book it deals with ARIMA models with unit roots and advances in the theory of cointegration. This book is somewhat advanced but is perfect for the right audience, the statisticians and econometricians that deal with time series modeling (univariate and multivariate ) and structural equation modeling.

The asymptotic theory is well covered but the unique feature of the book is that it points out that the asymptotics can give very poor approximations in small to moderate sample sizes. The authors provide alternatives including the use of the bootstrap for standard error estimates, confidence bounds and hypothesis testing (particularly tests for unit roots).

It is clear and covers the important literature. Much like Franses book it covers bootstrap and Bayesian methods and really does provide a current and useful approach to important problems and methodology in econometrics.

It could be used for a special topics graduate course or as a supplement to a graduate course in econometrics.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2000-08-19

Excellent book

This one of the best book about cointegration.

5 out of 5 stars Intuition behind modern time series analysis.......2000-04-24

This book is extremely well written. It gives a good intuition behind unit roots and cointegration. It tells us to be critical when it comes to unit roots and cointegration; they are not very powerful in a statistical sense. The authors warn of using such techniques blindly. This book is a good start for an intuitive feel after a tough Time Series course where one is all entangled in sophisticated statistical techniques. It is also a good book for the professional economist not very knowlegeable in time series econometrics. I personally learned a lot from that book and it increased my critical capacity when it comes to econometrics.

    Book Description

An analysis of economic time series is almost impossible without a detailed knowledge of concepts such as non-stationarity, integration and unit roots, yet the literature on these topics is immense. The last twenty years or so have seen the publication of hundreds of articles in this area. This book gives an authoritative overview of the literature providing direction and guidance; it also provides detailed examples to show how the techniques can be applied in practical situations and the pitfalls to avoid.

When I was reading this book, it was still a LaTex draft... This book is very hard in the sense that it requires a fairly good knowledge of measure theory. Certainly not for undergraduates or even graduate students not doing econometrics as a "field". Excellent discussion of cointegration.

      Book Description

This book presents modern developments in time series econometrics that are applied to macroeconomic and financial time series. It attempts to bridge the gap between methods and realistic applications. This book contains the most important approaches to analyse time series which may be stationary or nonstationary. Modelling and forecasting univariate time series is the starting point. For multiple stationary time series Granger causality tests and vector autoregressive models are presented. For real applied work the modelling of nonstationary uni- or multivariate time series is most important. Therefore, unit root and cointegration analysis as well as vector error correction models play a central part. Modelling volatilities of financial time series with autoregressive conditional heteroskedastic models is also treated.

        Book Description

In the last decade, time-series econometrics has made extraordinary developments on unit roots and cointegration. However, this progress has taken divergent directions, and has been subjected to criticism from outside the field. In this book, Professor Hatanaka surveys the field, examines those portions that are useful for macroeconomics, and responds to the criticism. His survey of the literature covers not only econometric methods, but also the application of these methods to macroeconomic studies. The most vigorous criticism has been that unit roots to do not exist in macroeconomic variables, and thus that cointegration analysis is irrelevant to macroeconomics. The judgement of this book is that unit roots are present in macroeconomic variables when we consider periods of 20 to 40 years, but that the critics may be right when periods of 100 years are considered. Fortunately, most of the time series data used for macroeconomic studies cover fall within the shorter time span. Among the numerous methods for unit roots and cointegration, those useful from macroeconomic studies are examined and explained in detail, without overburdening the reader with unnecessary mathematics. Other, less applicable methods are dicussed briefly, and their weaknesses are exposed. Hatanaka has rigourously based his judgements about usefulness on whether the inference is appropriate for the length of the data sets available, and also on whether a proper inference can be made on the sort of propositions that macroeconomists wish to test. This book highlights the relations between cointegration and economic theories, and presents cointegrated regression as a revolution in econometric methods. Its analysis is of relevance to academic and professional or applied econometricians. Step-by-step explanations of concepts and techniques make the book a self-contained text for graduate students.

          Description:
This paper introduces a t-ratio type test for detecting bilinearity in a stochastic unit root process. It appears that such a process is a realistic approximation for many economic and financial time series. It is shown that, under the null of no bilinearity, the test statistics are asymptotically normally distributed. Proofs of these asymptotic normality results require the Gihman and Skorohod theory for multivariate diffusion processes. Finite sample results describe speed of convergence, power of the tests and possible distortions to unit root testing which might appear due to the presence of bilinearity. It is concluded that the two-step testing procedure suggested here (the first step for the linear unit root and the second step for its bilinearity) is consistent in the sense that the size of the step one test is not affected by the possible detection of bilinearity at step two. The empirical part of the paper describes testing unit root bilinearity for 65 GARCH-adjusted stock market indices from mature and emerging markets. It is shown that for at least 70% of these markets, the hypothesis of no unit root bilinearity has to be rejected.

            Description:
While it is recognized that many macroeconomic time series are highly persistent over certain range, less persistent results are also found around very long horizons, indicating the existence of local or temporary persistency. In this paper, we study locally persistent behavior in economic time series. A test for stationarity against locally persistent alternative is proposed. Asymptotic analysis of the test statistic are provided under both the null and the alternative hypothesis of local persistency. Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to study the power and size of the test. An empirical application reveals that many US economic variables may exhibit local persistency.

              Description:
This paper studies estimation of average economic growth in time series models with persistency. In particular, a joint estimation of the trend coefficient and the autoregressive parameter is considered. An analysis on the proposed estimator is provided. Our analysis is also extended to the case with general disturbance distributions. A nonlinear M estimator and a class of partially adaptive M estimators which adapt themselves with respect to a measure of the tailthickness are considered. The joint estimator and its partially adapted version are compared with several conventional estimators. Monte Carlo experiments indicate that the proposed estimators have good finite sample performance. We use the proposed estimation procedure to estimate the growth rates for real GNP and consumer price index in 40 countries.

Since the inflationary 1970's, studies of monetary policy have concentrated almost exclusively on price-level stabilization and the avoidance of nominal shocks. In the aftermath of the collapse of financial bubbles in various parts of the world, the accomplishments and limitations of this dominant approach are debated in this volume edited by Axel Leijonhufvud, with contributions by a number of monetary economists, including Nobel Laureate Robert Lucas.

There's nothing worse than sitting in the audience while an inept speaker stumbles through an ill-conceived business presentation-- unless, of course, you're the one floundering in the spotlight. In 101 Ways to Captivate a Business Audience, Sue Gaulke, founder of the Speaker's Training Camp, strips the mysteries from the process by showing how to prepare and present an effective address that will successfully involve your audience and deliver your message.

Extremely easy to read. Easy, step-by-step approach into public speaking with very relevant topics such as its steak and sizzle technique to keep the listeners on their feet. After my speeches nowadays, people are always walking up to me afterwards complimenting me on how great the speech was, which a chunk of it is due to this book.

I am a nursing student, and I was hoping for more information on interviewing and finding the "right" kind of hospital. Although it was a very quick read, I did not find this book incredibly useful in my job search as a new grad!!

                              1 out of 5 stars Wow - I disagree.......2003-12-04

If you have absolutely no knowledge of how to write a resume then maybe this will help you but, gee, I found this very very elementary stuff. Unless you are a nurse with tons of degrees, professional designations, published articles, etc., I can't imagine this helping much. And then if you are such a nurse as I just described, you're not going to have much trouble touting yourself in a clear and concise manner. If you are a plain-vanilla nurse, with lots of hard work to your credit, but no groups of letters behind your name other than RN, this book will be of little help. I was looking for a book that would show me how to incorporate my lengthly business but non-nursing background into my nursing of 6 years to form a cohesive resume. It's not here. The author even says to not put anything on your resume that's not nursing related. This is bad advise in my opinion. If you had another working life before you became a nurse, and there are many of us that didn't come to nursing until our 30's or 40's, then this manual basically says to leave that info out. That's not telling the whole story of who you are or what you've accomplished in your life. This was a waste of money in my opinion. Wish I could get my money back. This book needs an overhaul to reflect real nurses.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to know about job search but were afraid to ask.......1999-12-10

I have worked most of my 23 years as a nurse in a variety of jobs but all in one geographical area. Now I am moving and needed advice on how to do a long distance job search. Jeanna Bozell's book answered all of my questions and more! I especially found the chapters on how to write a cover letter, the telephone interview, and how to negotiate the salary offer very helpful. The entire book is an easy read with lots of helpful insights on how to put your best foot forward in selling yourself. I feel better prepared to find the right job match and to discuss the job offer.

Finally, a comprehensive resume guide for nurses! Well written and easy to read, with practical, real life scenarios. This book is helpful to nurses at all career stages. It should be integrated into nursing education as core curriculum.

It may be hard to remember now, but until just a few years ago only an elite few could even hope to obtain a mobile phone--and the service they got, if they were fortunate enough to get any, was both technically mediocre and inordinately expensive.

That all changed in the 1980s, of course, when cellular technology began moving from experimental to ubiquitous and those clunky early car phones went the way of the Model T and telephone operator. The subsequent rush to wireless has been one of the most dynamic business stories of our time, and James B. Murray Jr. does a fine job of running it down and sorting it out in Wireless Nation.

The negotiator of some of the industry's biggest deals as chairman and managing director of Columbia Capital, Murray has had firsthand access to most of the major players in the ongoing saga, and his book benefits tremendously from the insider's perspective that these connections helped forge. It also benefits from his novelist's eye, which virtually puts readers into the center of the action with big-time participants like McCaw Cellular's Craig McCaw as well as "regular folks" like a middle-aged truck driver named Bob Pelissier who snagged one of the country's first cellular licenses.

Moving effortlessly from Newfoundland to New York and Washington state to Washington, D.C., Murray deftly chronicles the emergence of the cell phone as a worldwide business and societal phenomenon. He also offers informed speculation on its future, as emergent wireless Internet connections promise to make current technology and consumer penetration look as quaint as a black dial telephone. --Howard Rothman

                                  Book Description

Wireless Nation is two stories in one: it's the first definitive account of how the American cell phone industry evolved, and it's the inside story of the greatest government boondoggle in American history.

Written by industry insider James B. Murray, Jr., Wireless Nation details the biggest, most misguided federal giveaway since the Oklahoma Land Rush. In the 1980s, the U.S. government handed out exclusive licenses to run new cell phone systems across the country. At first, the bureaucrats tried to distribute these licenses to qualified recipients, requiring companies to prove they could build and run a cell phone system. But then they changed the rules, leading to comically disastrous results.

From 1985 on, the government essentially ran a casino, awarding these invaluable licenses by lottery. Anyone could win, regardless of whether they'd ever run a business - or even seen a cell phone - before. Hucksters peddled applications to anyone who would buy, and all over America random people decided to try their luck. When the lottery drum stopped twirling, truck drivers, nurses, deep-sea divers and preachers suddenly found themselves newly minted cell phone entrepreneurs. Trouble was, they had no idea how to run a business.

Many of the random winners ended up selling their licenses to true operators - companies like McCaw Cellular, Metromedia, and the Bell phone companies, which were forced to scramble around doling out cash for these "free" licenses. The scattering of licenses among hundreds of lottery winners delayed the industry's development, and the giveaway robbed U.S. taxpayers of the billions of dollars that auctioning off the licenses would have brought.

Wireless Nation is the colorful, engaging account of the American cell phone industry's strange history. Despite the government's ham-handed policies, the wireless industry has flourished, forever changing the nature of communications in the U.S. Wireless Nation is the first book to tell the whole story of the hottest industry of the last two decades.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Education, Entertainment, & Suspense.......2005-09-26

A thoroughly enjoyable read! Murray takes a series of broadly related threads culled from the rise of the US cellular industry and weaves them together to create a very interesting and informative narrative. It reads like a suspense novel complete with heroes, villains, intrigue, deceit, and a trillion dollar treasure. I completely expected a bland, tedious, historical documentary, but I found instead a gripping, page-turner that I had a hard time putting down.

5 out of 5 stars Great historical view of spectrum allocation in US.......2005-06-14

Very well written book! Jim Murray does a very good job of making an interesting story as he narrates how FCC distributed valuable cellular licenses in the US in the 1980s. Also, talkes about how McCaw built his empire. I highly recommend this for somebody who loves the world of telecom. However, this book is not for somebody looking for new business ideas or trends in the industry today.

4 out of 5 stars Wireless Evolution ;).......2004-12-07

This novel is actually pretty interesting after I read it. At first, I thought it was just another average book by some unknown, unpopular author that no one has ever even heard of before; but infact the novel got better and much more intriguing to me as I read on. There is a powerful transition given to the reader about how cell phones have changed our lives over the many years of development. It talks about how at first, they were just gigantic blocks that we would put up to our ears, and eventually get smaller and smaller, as well as more advanced over the years into what we have today.

The book also gives great detail about how life is working in the cellular business, and how it works all together and how there are so many cell phone companies fighting to see who is the best of all cell phone companies. This novel because it opened doors for my brain and world into the reality and history of cell phones. I recommend this novel to anyone highly interested in the cellular industry and anyone just curious as to how the cellular revolution began and is evolving to. :D

                                  3 out of 5 stars Spectral Analysis.......2003-11-21

For a book that calls itself wireless nation there is surprisingly little about the technology from the human aspect and how it came to be embraced by the common man. The book is informative, excrutiatingly so, about the early history of wireless spectrum distribution. The tales about the people involved and the way it changed the lives of the lucky few and the unlucky many is charming. However, the author would have done well to describe the phenomenon as it evolved into the ubiquitous tool that it is now, instead of harping on the POP (rights to spectrum in particular regions) distribution for what seems like ever (150 odd pages to be a bit more precise).
There isn't much here for the budding entrepreneur as some of the blurbs proclaim. 'Look ahead and don't give in too soon' is the simple, and only, story retold by every character in this book.
Another surprising fact is the complete lack of mention of the irridium satellite debacle that started of as a promising techno-tool for the same innate human-need, being able to talk on the phone on the move.
Overall, an informative but tedious book, the kind I wouldn't mind reading if only to fill another loophole in my knowledge of the world that surrounds us.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining historical account.......2003-07-31

This is a great book for getting a personal account from the major business personalities involved in building the nation's cell phone system. The way the spectrum was licensed and the companies had to partner makes an exciting read, but I couldn't help wondering about the rest of the story. There's no information about what the Europeans and Japanese were doing and little discussion of the technical aspects of the systems. Although some might consider it dry, a short chapter discussing on how early cell phones worked would give readers an apprecation of how these devices were miracles of modern science and would add a dimension to the story that I feel is missing. The only other disappointment was the biased view of the FCC which, even if true should have been investigated and reported more thouroughly. An example would be how the authors explain that the FCC decided to radically change the licensing rules which took more than a decade to come up with after granting the first 30 licenses. This is a significant event, but the authors don't give any personal perspectives by regulators on exactly why this happened.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and recommend it for professionals in any of the telecom fields.
