I read this as A book and not Thomas' book, to try and be objective!

Now it's THE book, presumably until their next one!

The authors' advanced thought, expertise and experience show through a beautiful synthesis of principles, real applications, predictions and analogies.

As professionals we find ourselves in an era where strategy has to be very fluid - and I find myself constantly needing to zoom in and zoom out of the various aspects of my start-ups for a perspective view as well as detailed focus...

Much deeper than the first reading, this is where I think is the REAL value of 'Ecosystem' - to visit and keep re-visiting it for defining different pieces of our business, regardless of what stage the business is in!

Powerful Tool for Strategic Planning.......2001-09-11

This book provides twelve principles for successful e-commerce. The principles are the synthesis of keen observation and deep thought, and are presented in a dispassionate, objective manner.

The principles themselves are divided among four stakeholder groups that form the ecosystem. "Ecosystem" is an appropriate analogy because each stakeholder group has a different set of needs, yet all stakeholder groups are interdependent in the value chain. The principles are each presented in a consistent format - presentation of the principle, two case studies each from the supplier's perspective giving a supplier profile, an interview with the supplier and showing the principle as it applies to the customer, and an executive summary of the principle.

Stakeholder and principle groupings are: Business-to-Shareholder (learning and planning principles), Business-to-Employee (system, network and security principles), Business-to-Business (payment, buying, supplier and inventory/logistics principles), and Business-to-Customer (selling, customer and personalization principles).

By dividing the principles and focusing on stakeholders groups the authors have provided a systematic and structured template to apply to an e-commerce strategy and associated tactics.

What I like about this book is the utter lack of hype or hyperbole, and the presentation of each principle in a consistent manner. I also like the careful selection of the case studies, each of which highlights the principle to which it is associated. Finally I applaud the authors for their straightforward writing, which makes this book highly readable (even at nearly 400 pages it can be read on a day off or on a coast-to-coast flight). What impresses me, however, is the research and deep thought that the authors put into this book and the care with which they structured and sequenced the information.

I highly recommend this book to anyone involved in strategic planning, or who wants to understand the complexities of modern supply chains within the context of e-commerce. The keys to success are between the pages of this outstanding book.

I was going to give this only three stars before it hit me why this book is so good. The reason for the three stars--it's obvious that this is the author's first book. It needs to be heavily edited, it starts out pretty slowly, and it's written more toward the level of high-level public speakers. It also tells you more of what not to do rather than what to do.

But, as I've been thinking about it for the last week since I finished the book, I've realized why this book is so good. This author has tons of unique concepts on speech. I've been thinking about this book ever since I finished it, and these really cool concepts that the author discusses keep coming back to me.

A few of them are:
-Making sure that all of your speech relates to the audience's "carrots"
-That confidence comes from three things: 1) knowing what to do, 2) learning to do it, and 3) doing it often enough so you can do it with confidence
-How public speaking is like dancing
-That PowerPoint is bad for almost all presentations

The book's last half is much, much stronger than the first half. This is pretty rare in a book.

Hopefully this author will write another book. She's got a lot to share, and I think that her next book will be a bestseller.

I have found this book extremely helpful in planning and giving presentations - much more than most of the other books out there on public speaking. I make a lot of speeches every year, and I often go back to the presentation analysis form the author suggests to make sure I'm going to connect with the audience.

The very best thing about this book is the underlying message in every chapter: it's not about you the speaker. It's about your relationship with the listeners. When you are thinking about them and helping them understand your ideas, you lose the self-consciousness about yourself.

This is a useful book for both experienced speakers (the exercises are terrific!) and people new to speaking who need a boost in confidence.

I used to shake- literally tremble -at thought of presenting. My heart would pound, my palms would sweat - I felt completely out of control. "Say it with Confidence" helped me take control, relax and conquer my anxieties. I now do public speaking on a regular basis and each time it gets easier. This book is entertaining and a fun read...but more importantly it is the antidote to presentation fears!

I read this book because I found, after many years out of the workforce, I was less confident in my ability to present to any size audience. It was hard to use my voice effectively and relax. "Say It With Confidence" showed me better than any other book that the internal process of finding a personal style, using what feels natural and feeling the success of doing all of that really well produces a solid level of self confidence that stays with you for a longer time than any program with the same list of steps to follow for everybody. The whole idea of approaching yourself, not with a formula, but with a real self analysis makes so much more sense.
Say It With Confidence uses personal experiences of the author to show you that she really knows how to help people overcome mental blocks because she personally overcame her own and understands what it takes. Her anecdotes tell the story of what works and what doesn't work more so than any lecture or 'how to' approach ever could. The author's experience helping people with this subject/skill with advice tailored to each unique person in their own unique set of circumstances shows great insight into the individual and that we all can't expect ourselves to turn ourselves into 'someone else' in order to succeed. I loved the book. I'd recommend it to anyone trying to overcome fear of presenting, to anyone interviewing for jobs, for anyone who wants to learn how to communicate to customers, management or even subordinates.

I have just read the first 44 pages ... And ... The concepts and suggestions are excellent, practical ... Yet, there are so many spelling errors or word substitution errors that spell check would not identify, that it is extremely hard to ignore them and focus on the content.

I feel badly for Ms. Estess ... As ... whoever proofread her material ... really let her down.

This book has been slammed by others, but I have to say, it is one of the must read books on this time period in the NHL. In my opinion, read this, along with Game Misconduct by Russ Conway and Cracked Ice by Stan Fischler. The three books will give you a pretty good idea of what really went on. This book is well written, and interesting from beginning to end. It goes fast, but you will enjoy it.

The Wackiest of Sports Leagues- EXPOSED!.......2001-03-10

Of the four major sports, the most volatile when it comes to it's management is the National Hockey League.

"Power Plays" is the first book I can think of to truly expose the inner workings of the NHL. Told from an insider's point of view, this is a must for any fan of the sport. Especially enjoyable were the retellings of the NHL-WHA merger and the referee walkout during the NJ-Boston playoff game.

Most of the book is hard to put down, but there are two chapters that make it drag. One is how Clarence Campbell was overthrown as NHL Prez in the 1970s. Stein then uses the final chapter to defend the Hall of Fame's decision to induct him while still President in 1993, a read that seems to drag on forever.

Nonetheless, "Power Plays" is the only recent insider's look into the wackiest of the 4 big leagues. Plus, the first few chapters about the Broad Street Bullies are priceless!

Since the book was written in 1997, the crazy goings on with the Islanders, Coyotes, Hurricanes, and Penguins franchises of the last few years is not included. Nor are other great hockey tales such as Eric Lindros and other players battles with management; or the Marty McSorely incident.

An absorbing account of a dangerous sport and its owners........1997-12-07

Gil Stein has written an absorbing account of a dangerous sport, not of its playing action, but of the violent skirmishes of its owners as they meet behind the closed doors of the NHL's Board of Governors executive sessions. They make the game on ice look like Sunday afternoon croquet on the lawn of the Baptist Church. This is a wonderful behind-the-scenes book; but it is not all disillusioning. A number of the original clubowners were real sportsmen devoted to the game of ice hockey and its glorious action, although some can no longer afford the financial losses and have had to sell their teams to extremely wealthy patrons or to corporate monoliths, both with a bottom-line myopia. In the 1996-97 season, almost 200 players received guaranteed salaries of over a million dollars; "but money has not spoiled hockey players. They still play the game with zeal and ferocity and NHL hockey is more exciting today than ever. The players may have lots of money, but deep inside they are the same kids who learned to skate on frozen ponds and dreamed every night of their lives that someday they would hoist the Stanley Cup above their heads while skating a victory lap before their fans." It is this excitement that Gil Stein captures in his book and the ferocity too of owners warring with each other out of the view of the public. It is all there and all fun to read. Just as Gil Stein has enjoyed the game of hockey, he has enjoyed writing this book, and you too will enjoy its reading. Don't miss the splendid introduction on pages xi to xv. John L.
