Great Practical Reminders.......2003-07-20

This very entertaining and quick read is filled with pratical tips that we know to do, but we didn't know why. Randy's style of story telling lets you see how he has personally used these suggestions to his own benefit and become the kind of person that anyone would want to do business with. The Randy's Reminders at the end of each chapter have become weekly focuses for me to keep his principles fresh in my mind.

This book is fun to read but powerful enough that you will refer to it time and time again. This is a must read for anyone who wants to be in business but true to themselves.

The perfect blueprint for any small business owner looking to succeed. Randy's book not only provides real world knowledge on how to become a successful business person, it also provides examples on how Randy practices what he preaches! "I wish I'd read that earlier!" is the very first thing I want to say after I'd read through the whole book. This is an excellent book, not only because of the fact and the analyses brought out by the author, but also the way the author organizes and presents the reasons behind the odd behaviours of people of different kinds. This is not the first book I read on the topic about how to deal with people in a way to bring me success, but it IS the first book that makes me easily learn the way to see and understand people. By the materials written on this book, I was taught how to deal with people in order to make me the one who has the final control over the outcome of the event. I think it's a book that's desired to be read once, at least, even for those who think he/she can tackle the skill to deal with people very well. I truely suggest all of you to have a look.

This book is a great way to get a brief and tactical understanding of communication in the work place. If you have difficulty getting your point across, want to be better prepared to present ideas in a team environment or are wondering why you can't seem to convince people that your direction is the right way then this will be a good book to read. You will understand where others are coming from and what they need to hear in order to give you the information and results you need. This book, when utilised will give you the results you are looking for. Much of the information can be used not only on the job but in your personal communication as well.

An interesting book..........1997-05-19

The ultimate rewards of reading McCallister's book will probably range depending on the position one is in. Those who interact in a more executive setting will likely find the numerous scenarios and clear, straightfoward advice more poingnant and maleable. However, the personality models (which are as amusing as they are insightful) and communication techniques can be internalized by just about anyone in any number of situations (even, as McCallister points out, in ones marriage). Perhaps the biggest strength of this book is that it avoids the (very annoying) mantra that 'communication is about liking yourself and being positive'. McCallister, a professional, knows how bent and ultimately manipulative many interpersonal relationships are, and as such the advice one gets here is real and hands on practical stuff. Its only major weakness is that the personality models McCallister uses (six in all) are pretty static, despite some attempt to keep them fluid (usually via a superficial reminder that 'life is more dynamic than this'). Still, a very good book. Useful and funny. I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats....

Get Hired helped me get the job I've been in for 2 months now. After reading the first few chapters I revised what I'd thought was a pretty good resume to instead convey what it is I do that's truly outstanding. I learned how to send v-letters instead of cover letters -- this last approach got me four interviews from the first eleven resumes I sent out in response to newspaper classifieds. (Oh yeah, I got an interview via a monster.com posting. How often does that happen?)

There's lots of good stuff here, including the value of cold-calling on the phone, which I hated doing at first but which I discovered works. If you're looking for a book that gets you to re-examine your whole life and career you might do better with Parachute or Po Bronson. But if you're looking for a guide to getting hired quickly, well, it took seven weeks from the time I picked up this book for me to find the position I'm in, which is a job I like as much as any I've had. And I'd been looking for a job for more time than I want to admit -- even under an alias. Get this book, do what it says -- ESPECIALLY DO THOSE TASKS YOU DON'T REALLY "LIKE" DOING -- and keep positive. Things do change. Do not give up. Do not give up. Cheek.......2004-06-21

I never write reviews, but Ms Briles' sheer cheek has made me want to.

The book itself is, well, mildly OK, simply not well enough written to really capture anyone's attention. The explanations about different financial products seem to have been written in a bit of a hurry and not revised. Unless you have a basic financial education, you won't understand much, and if you do, then you won't learn anything new. You'd be much better off reading something by David Bach.

The sheer cheek of the author is the way she logs on to Amazon to review her own book with five stars - twice. I suppose she was worried by the fact that nobody else had posted a review. Well, now I have.

Swim with the Dolphins is one of the most valuable books executives can read as they attempt to understand which strategies for interpersonal relations will be most effective during the new century. Co-authored by Connie Glaser and Barbara Steinberg Smalley (and published by Warner Books), Dolphins explains "how women can succeed in corporate America on their own terms."There are dozens of checklists throughout Dolphins which are of practical and immediate value. Also insightful profiles of women who have succeeded in business. No two are the same, of course, but they tended to face (and overcome) the same barriers. I suggest that Dolphins be read in combination with Peter Drucker on the Profession of Management (published by Harvard Business School Press) because Drucker's various essays provide a rock-solid framework within which to apply the wealth of information and wisdom which Glaser and Smalley so generously provide in Dolphins. To a significant extent, this is a "what to do...what not to do" guide for women who are determined to succeed in corporate America. For that reason alone, it is a stunning achievement. But I think the book's importance transcends narrowly-defined (albeit legitimate) gender issues. There is much that all of us, male or female, can learn from Dolphins. This book really helped me to validate my personality and management style. I really am a dolphin (intelligent, but warm and personable), rather than a shark, and I am striving to succeed (as a woman executive in a large corporation) without compromising those qualities. I have always wondered if I should try to be more of a shark; now I am content to remain a dolphin.

My only criticism is that the book was somewhat wordy and bogged down in places. But the messages were good and case stories interesting. This book can easily be read in a weekend, then passed on to others.
