Mike Moore, a former Prime Minister of New Zealand, has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in politics. As Minister of Overseas Trade and Marketing, he led trade missions to Australia, Japan, China, India, Pakistan and Turkey. Subsequently he has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and, until August, 2002, as Director General of the World Trade Organization. Moore has long been an active participant in international discussions on trade liberalization and has received numerous awards, including the New Zealand 1990 Commemoration Medal and New Zealand's highest honor, the Order of New Zealand. He lives in Geneva.

The future European Central Bank needs monetary policy instruments which have yet to be agreed. At present, the range of instruments is very heterogeneous in the potential member states. This book offers a systematic analysis of the issue, considering general theoretical arguments as well as the concrete institutional situation in European countries. Taking the Bundesbank's instruments as the starting point, their rationale is discussed against the background of experience elsewhere. The theoretical and empirical treatment leads to several competing concepts. Taking the three goals of monetary efficiency, fair competition and decentralization establishes a strong case for the use of "standing facilities" and to a lesser extend "reserve requirements", albeit modified and brought up-to-date.

Very basic, basic stuff.......2002-06-11

I bought this book as a part of my graduate coursework in telecommunications field. I was truly disappointed with the book and suprised that it is even required for graduate school curriculum. The author in many cases is contradicting herself from one chapter to another. There are a couple of typing errors in the book too. The writing is poor. The information Ms. Laino is sharing with the public is nothing new for the people who have been in the industry for a while. I would recommend it only for the individuals who know absolutely nothing about telecommunications and need vary basic guidelines on how to manage Telecommunications systems and resources.

Interesting jobs are not available in classified. Firstly most jobs available are not advertized. Second, you will work much better in a position that suits your abilities. This is precisely the starting point of the PIE method developed in this book.

Especially for long-term unemployed managers (as we have in Europe), one needs to pick targets, and approach them with a methodology to discover job opportunities after listening to the company's needs. Thus you are sure to value your experience rather than your knowledge, which can possibly lead you to change domain and/or job. Based on the match between one's strengths and a firm's hidden positions, the approach of Daniel POROT is destined to entrepreneurs and people who are chasing with method.

On the way, the process helps the person to rebuild confidence (part of the recommendations involve working out the approach of target companies with other job-seekers). The approach proved very useful to scores of job-hunter! s who questioned their own capabilities on the way. It works also fine for self-outplacement.

The method proposed by D. Porot is based on methodologies developed by Research institutions (such as Standford Univ.) along the years with large corporations. So one must consider the book as the surface of the iceberg, and be sure that the hidden part is solid, even if the methods described seem good-sense. This book helps to have a strategic approach, and at the same time it is full of pragmatic advices to develop each phase of contact with the company you intend to work for.

The corporation model of organizations is in terminal decline, says Cook, and is being displaced by what he calls "syntagma," "a body of persons forming a division of the population of a country." The point he makes by this is that the emerging organization will be no artifact, no fabrication. It will be innately human, and in that sense, organic. His book traces the philosophical and historical development of the modern corporation through Hellenistic-Judeo-Christian theologies, with particular emphases on the social, political, and economic impacts of rationalistic science, impacts such as humanism, democracy, capitalism, and behaviorism. Cook offers an analysis of the critical aspects of the corporation as it exists today, and draws heavily for evidence upon contemporary management theories and practices. In doing so he argues that it is the radical changes going on in society itself that is rendering the traditional corporation obsolete. And, since western civilization is undergoing "an epochal shift," the new, emerging corporation can have no resemblance to the old model. He maintains that the organization evolving to replace it will be characterized by common values, mutual purpose, excess capacity, and creative action, and will have two dynamics, what he calls commensuration and essentiality. "Only with this kind of human system is it possible to create an organization that solely and exclusively serves the common good." An outstanding read! Clearly written, I devoured this book in three nights, have since re-read it twice and constantly refer to it for reference.

I also bought the book as a gift for the CEO of an Internet Security startup firm. Interestingly, he left it on a plane by mistake and promptly bought a new copy so as not to go without!

Golis outlines the key elements for structuring the V.C. business plan, which takes a bit of effort to get straight but is well worth incorporating his elements in a formal Business Plan.

As a reality check for other buyers, I used this book as a constant reference source in building a submission for Stage 1&2 V.C. raising (which has now successfully been accepted and is in the 'heads of agreement stage' for $500,000 in funds placement).

The book does not present company management issues. Its focus is on the Entrepreneur and Venture Capital raising issues.
