The Struggle for Market Power: Industrial Relations in the British Coal Industry, 18001840
James Alan Jaffe Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521529417 |
Book Description
During the Industrial Revolution, class was defined largely through the structuring of market relations. Integrating aspects of economic and social history as well as industrial sociology, this book examines the sources of the perception of the market on the part of both capital and labor and the elaboration of their alternative market ideologies. Of particular import is the argument that working class culture expressed a fundamental acceptance of the utility of the market, a point that is supported by a detailed analysis of the labor process, workplace bargaining and early nineteenth century trade unionism. Nonetheless, the working class's definition of "proper" market relations differed substantially from that of capitalists.

Bargaining and Markets (Economic Theory, Econometrics, and Mathematical Economics)
Martin J. Osborne , and Ariel Rubinstein Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0125286325 |
Book Description
The formal theory of bargaining originated with John Nash's work in the early 1950s. This book discusses two recent developments in this theory. The first uses the tool of extensive games to construct theories of bargaining in which time is modeled explicitly. The second applies the theory of bargaining to the study of decentralized markets. Rather than surveying the field, the authors present a select number of models, each of which illustrates a key point. In addition, they give detailed proofs throughout the book.

Bargaining Power, Wages and Employment: An Analysis of Agricultural Labor Markets in India
Gaurav Datt Manufacturer: Sage Publications Pvt. Ltd ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0803993382 |
Book Description
Providing a rich analysis, Bargaining Power, Wages, and Employment examines one of the most deprived groups in the country: agricultural laborers. This group constitutes 30% of all rural households, nearly two thirds of whom live below the poverty line, and accounts for about 60% of the total unemployed person-days in rural India. Using data for five different agro-climatic zones, the author develops a new bargaining model for the casual labor market at the village level. By exerting asymmetric power, the bargaining model determines the agricultural wage rate, the level of employment, and the employers' profits. Of particular interest is author Gaurav Datt's analysis of quasi-cooperative forms of behavior that persist even where labor unions are nonexistent as well as Datt's emphasis on the importance of building gender disparity into the bargaining process. Also developing a new research agenda for a hitherto neglected area of study, Bargaining Power, Wages, and Employment will be of interest to students, academics, and researchers in labor studies, agricultural economics, economic theory, and development studies.

Bargaining Tactics and Strategy in a Government/Contractor Bilateral Monopoly
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423561651 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A440543. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The purpose of this research is to examine potential bargaining strategies and tactics which might be used to respond to an offer perceived as unfair or unreasonable from a sole source offeror. Initially, a sole source offeror normally has considerable bargaining leverage over the Government. Pricing data needed to properly evaluate the seller's quotation may be incomplete, inaccurate or unavailable. Urgent and compelling need may require accelerating the procurement process. Using bargaining theory and the classic economic paradigm of bilateral monopoly as a foundation for the research, potential bargaining strategies and tactics were evaluated through a survey of 62 Department of Defense contracting specialists. A primary conclusion of the research is that attaining a bargaining agreement that reflects a fair and reasonable price under bilateral monopoly conditions is not possible unless the Government possesses adequate information to accurately assess the fairness and reasonableness of the offered price.

Guide to Estate, Tax, and Financial Planning with Stock Options
Carol A. Cantrell Manufacturer: CCH Incorporated ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0735538743 |
Product Description
The unique features of stock options have spawned numerous questions over how and when they are taxed, valued, and recorded for financial statement purposes. Disputes also arise over what government entity has jurisdiction to tax them, who has a legitimate claim to them in death, divorce, and bankruptcy, and whether they can be transferred at all. Until now and the publication of "Guide to Estate, Tax and Financial Planning with Stock Options," the market has not had such comprehensive cradle-to-grave coverage of the tax, estate, and financial issues that can confront a person with stock options. The author was inspired to write the book after her client for whom she had just prepared a 20-year cash flow projection, died suddenly of cancer at the age of 57. He left behind his wife who was a schoolteacher, his two college-bound children -- and four million dollars of unexercised stock options. None of his advisors knew what to do. This able group included his money manager, his lawyer, trust officer, and the human resources administrator at his job. Instead, they all looked to the author, his CPA. There were so many questions and so few answers. Guide to Estate, Tax and Financial Planning with Stock Options provides the answers. In addition, it raises many more questions for which there are no clear answers. It is a comprehensive guide for estate, tax, and financial planners who advise clients about employee stock options, human resources personnel are who presumed to know all about these important benefits, and for insiders who must know these things. Finally, it is also for the inquisitive-minded individual who wants to maximize the value of his or her stock options in a number of different life circumstances. This book offers a comprehensive source of up-to-date information about the major tax and financial areas affecting stock options. It gives practical advice for dealing with options through its many examples, planning notes, and forms designed for a quick understanding and easy application of the principles. The subject areas span many professional disciplines. Therefore, most practitioners will be familiar with some, but certainly not all of the areas. Nonetheless, clients with stock options will surely encounter the majority of these issues at some time during their life. For many of these clients, stock options are their largest and most important asset. Thus, the Guide fills the educational gaps for the practitioner and his or her client where answers are to be had. And where questions remain unresolved, it offers a useful starting point in research. · Coverage of the new lattice valuation models for stock options, a sample valuation and a comparison to Black-Scholes · Explanation of how the IRS might apply the new IRC Section 409A deferred compensation rules to non "plain vanilla" stock options · Discussion of new opportunities to convert stock option gains to a deferred compensation plan under IRC Section 409A · Analysis of the impact of FAS 123(R)s option expensing requirement on an employers decision to modify existing stock options or adopt new plans · Coverage of new opportunities for issuing options on partnership entities under IRS proposed regulations on partnership interests granted for services · Inclusion of updated examples of regular and AMT planning opportunities and pit falls with 2005 tax rates and exemptions
