Book Description
A classic problem of social order prompts the central questions of this book: Why are some groups better able to govern themselves than others? Why do state actors sometimes delegate governing power to other bodies? How do different organizations including the state, the business community, and protection rackets come to govern different markets? Scholars have used both sociological and economic approaches to study these questions; here Timothy Frye argues for a different approach. He seeks to extend the theoretical and empirical scope of theories of self-governance beyond groups that exist in isolation from the state and suggests that social order is primarily a political problem.
Drawing on extensive interviews, surveys, and other sources, Frye addresses these question by studying five markets in contemporary Russia, including the currency futures, universal and specialized commodities, and equities markets. Using a model that depicts the effect of state policy on the prospects for self-governance, he tests theories of institutional performance and offers a political explanation for the creation of social capital, the formation of markets, and the source of legal institutions in the postcommunist world. In doing so, Frye makes a major contribution to the study of states and markets.
The book will be important reading for academic political scientists, economists (especially those who study the New Institutional Economics), legal scholars, sociologists, business-people, journalists, and students interested in transitions.
Timothy Frye is Assistant Professor of Political Science, The Ohio State University.

Aimed at the more experienced developer seeking to do more with the new .NET platform in C#, Applied .NET: Developing People-Oriented Software Using C# provides both a programming tutorial and a guide to the new possibilities for creating collaborative software using today's Web services and XML-based standards.
While there are a number of good C# books available, this title's focus on "people-oriented software" is what gives it a unique edge. The authors first define some guiding principles of what the next generation of software will entail (generally more mobility and collaboration) and then show the advantages of .NET for such a paradigm shift. They first illustrate what they have in mind with their custom online document-management system built with ASP.NET and C#.
With this example in mind, the book slows down with a quick introduction to the C# language and the .NET platform. These sections will allow more experienced developers to get acquainted with C# (though beginners will certainly want a more comprehensive title to supplement the tutorial here).
Where this text really shines is in its "big-picture" explanation of why .NET is a better way to share components and functionality. One standout chapter here looks at the evolution of component reuse on the Windows platform, from the early days of DLLs to COM and COM+ and the improvements afforded by .NET. Clearly, Microsoft has raised the bar with .NET when it comes to ease of deployment.
Later chapters offer some excellent advice of where Web services and XML fit into Microsoft's other server products for Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and B2B e-commerce. Here, the authors use BizTalk Server 2000 (with a nod to Commerce Server 2000 and its business processing pipeline), illustrated with plenty of screen shots of these tools at work. Besides gaining an understanding of these Microsoft products, experienced developers can get a look at the final case study here, which uses these two tools to process credit card information for an order fulfillment system.
Though somewhat of a mixed bag (owing probably to its team authorship), the focus on a new way to write more reusable, more shareable software with Web services and .NET makes Applied .NET: Developing People-Oriented Software Using C# a challenging and very worthwhile resource for getting a handle on the new capabilities of .NET for architecting and building the next generation of Web applications. It offers some intelligent new ways to think about software, plus some real code to get you started on exploiting the new distributed and collaborative features available in .NET. --Richard Dragan
Customer Reviews:
Applied.NOT.......2003-01-07
This book's title is misleading, as it appears to feed off the familiarity with the Applied Programming series of books from Microsoft Press. It is truly a mixed-bag, as the above editorial review admits. After expounding on the 'revolutionary' idea that software should be people oriented, it dives into pages of code that lays out an Asp.Net application. It then sandwiches in a C# fundamentals tour, and then dives right into more code. If there is a purpose to this book, I couldn't distill it. It truly appears as if each author wrote their portion of their book without talking to the other, and then the editor mashed them together the night before the deadline hit.
Different type of book.......2001-12-07
If you have kept up with the .NET revolution, you have no doubt seen and read a lot of books on .NET and the .NET languages. Most of the books on C# deal with the basics of syntax with a couple of small samples applications. Very few, however, deal with any sort of real world situations.
While this book does cover a few of the basics, it is more focused on the people aspect. I feel this is an important, often overlooked, aspect of software development and the fact that it is overlooked is why so much software is hard to use.
If you are looking for a best practices book, this tome is not quite there. The same goes for a book strong on code. While you can use the CD to look at a good amount of sample code, the book is rather thin. This is not, however, the focus of the book; and, since so many other books cover this, the niche filled here is rather nice.
If I had to pick the proper audience for this book, there would be two categories: 1) Anyone who has ever had a piece of software fail as the end-users never bought in, and 2) anyone who wants to ensure this never happens. While it is not an excellent book, I have to laud the publisher for taking a chance on this subject matter selling. I hope it does.

not enough detail.......2003-07-04
Five hundred business ideas are given in this Alamanac, but there is nothing all that useful about the information given for each. For each business mentioned the author gives the approximate start-up costs, the potential earnings, fees, advice and an overview of the business. After reading up on a few business opportunities and talking to different people, I realized how off the mark some of the information given in this book is. For example, in one business it is suggested to "hit the big factories and large businesses". I was told by someone already established in the business however that the best way is to start with people you already know and then branch out utilizing their connections to expand your business. Large businesses and corporations do not often take in small people who don't have a good foundation unless they have strong connections to people at the company. Some of the advice given in this book makes it seem like all you have to do is just walk into some big corporation or business and make a big sale of a product or service and that's that. The information is way too watered down.
Another thing about the book is that one's earnings in a business can be easily significatly more or significantly less than the range they give.
Update PLEASE!.......2003-04-27
I bought this book a couple of years ago and pulled it out recently and I agree with one of the other reviewers: Please update this book! I've read many "start your own business" books and the layout of this one is by far the best I've ever seen. The book is divided into categories according to how much money you can/will invest as start-up capital. The descriptions of each business are detailed and it even has the pro's and con's. But, as mentioned before, it is badly in need of an update, i.e., when it suggests that you will need a computer, it lists the prices at around $2,000.00! This price is quoted for even the most non-technical businesses and obviously you can knock off around $1500.00 for a basic computer. But if you are in need of ideas, detailed descriptions, etc., this book can still be very helpful.
It's About Time!.......2003-03-13
This book is enlightening and gives hope to potential entrepreneurs by outlining areas that one might not initially think of. My only comment to Adams Almanacs is when can we expect an updated edition? I can hardly wait!
Finally a book that talks about Storytellers!.......2000-08-31
This book is the only book I could find which talked about the kind of business I want to start. Not only was it affordable but it cuts to the chase when it gives you info. For example:It gives you start up costs, potential earnings, typical fees, advertising, qualifications, equipment needed, home business potential, staff requirements, handicapped potential, hidden costs on top of how to get started. This book is a great find!

A key guide for job seekers.......2004-05-15
A key guide for job seekers addresses common problems of the successful job search. Caryl and Ron Krannich's Job Interview Tips For People With Not-so-hot Backgrounds: How To Put Red Flags Behind You tells the common red flags which appear on resumes and background searches and explores how candidates for jobs can offset these red flags with positive results. Whether it's no experience, poor grades, or poor references and a prior firing, this details clear resolutions to common barriers.
Great title and great information,.......2004-05-03
This is book is great. As the author of, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality: solutions for a meaningful and rewarding career." I feel I am an expert on the subject. Many books tell you how to get a job interview, and few give you scripted answers assuming you have been nothing, but successful.
For most people, this just is not the case. There are a number of reasons of why people do not have great backgrounds. I for one do not believe this is a reflection of potential, creativity, and attitude all of which are far more important than experience. If you need to prep for the interview read this book, if you need to get an interview read, "How to find your dream job and make it a reality: solutions for a meaningful and rewarding career" first. When investing in both of these resources you cannot go wrong.

Pass it On.......2000-08-04
I have been an investment professional for 27 years. One of the most common concerns I encounter is the concern that investors have of retaining the corpus of their estate for their children. Yet, estate planning is a complicated field populated by attorneys CPA's and others with specialized knowledge. The "average man" feels overwhelmed. Now, I have found a source to which I can refer them. Greenway and Shotwell have done an excellent job of explaining the basics of estate planning and have done it with such humor that the book becomes engaging reading rather than a dry estate planning tome. Kudos to the authors!
buy it now; you'll save (lots) later !.......2000-05-21
can't believe a lawyer can write so lucidly and make the estate tax rules so clear. nancy randolf greenway has taken a complex subject and made it understandable....with humor, too. i recommend this book to everyone over the age of forty....a must read before wasting time on an estate-planning professional's billing clock.
BRILLANT.......2000-04-19
A delightful, readable, and informative book.

Customer Reviews:
Flying for Peanuts.......2006-01-02
"Flying for Peanuts" is a humorous book that celebrates the success of the low cost airline concept successfully and profitably practiced by Southwest Airlines in the USA for over a generation. The author uses an unorthodox writing style to pay tribute to his fascination about Southwest Airline's success based on the Airline's lack of textbook customer service protocol.
The serious story behind this book is about how Herbert Kelleher, the now retired former Chairman of the Board of Directors and founder of Southwest Airlines (SWA) created a no frills airline that has been a darling for the common American person on the street. The Airline managed to create a highly motivated workforce with a unique customer oriented culture. The Airline made flying affordable to ordinary men and women who otherwise would never have afforded to fly regularly on conventional ("relatively high fare") legacy carriers.
Among the unique features of SWA's services that result in a low cost (and low fare) structure, high aircraft utilisation and quick aircraft turnarounds include no assigned seating (free seating), no meals, a single class (all economy class layout), simple fare structure, high employee productivity, good reliability, safe operations and a humorous friendly approach to the serious business of flying.
This book is recommended reading for those with a good sense of humour and who want to have a basic understanding of how SWA's has created an efficient, low-cost, people-oriented airline with helpful, down-to-earth and fun loving employees.
a fun book.......2005-05-25
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Marty on a Southwest Airline flight between Phoenix and Oklahoma City last year while I was still traveling as a Physician Assistant educator prior to the start of my Real Estate sales carrier. His book is as delightful, especially for all of us Southwest Airline commuters, as is Marty in person -- a fun unique read written by a fun unique guy.

Fun Insight To Southwest Airlines.......2005-01-09
Flying for Peanuts by Marty Thompson is a clever and humorous little book that provides the traveler with the ABC's of Flying Southwest Airlines. One of the most profitable airlines, Southwest treats its customers with fun and comedy, while cutting out the frills. If you have never flown Southwest, you'll find this book fun to read in preparation for your first flight with that carrier. If you are already a loyal Southwest customer, you'll find the book fun and familiar and you'll learn about the little lady named Irma who was the first commercial airline stewardess in 1922 and who helped form the customer service policy that works so well for the airline. This book is a manual telling any business owner how to establish successful customer service that allows the customer to choose his/her level of service and helps the workers and customers both find fun in the workplace. The book is a tribute to all Irma's astute observations taught the industry, making each trip on Southwest Airlines a fun and memorable laugh-in.
Learning the Ropes.......2004-08-17
I should have read this book BEFORE my recent trip on Southwest. I actually saw many of the shennanigans Marty describes with such classy humor. It made me wonder just how many of them he had pulled on me as the middle person to his aisle seat. The book makes flying Southwest more fun.
disappointed.......2004-03-04
just really not that funny. i ordered it to bring my total order up to 25.... should've paid for the shipping.

United Airlines.......2006-07-23
I love their planes I like the 747,757,767,777,A319,A320 at Chicago O'Hare,San Francisco,Los Angeles,Denver,New York JFK,Seattle,Miami,Tokyo Narita,Washington Dulles,London Heathrow,Honolulu on their 777,747,767 services.
Disappointing.......1999-04-17
A 100 page history of United should be better than this. This is a boring list of dates and facts with no commentary. United caused the 1987 stock market crash. It was a major supporter for deregulation in 1978. Some very colorful people worked there. None of this is here. For a much more interesting account, read "Hard Landing" by Thomas Petzinger.
There are numerous pictures, mostly black and white, mostly of current models. Should have included more vintage aircraft. The small format of the book does not lend itself to impressive photos and airplanes in black and white don't do anything for me. Should have had fewer photos and more narrative.
My copy had no wrong labels on airplanes and the ESOP is discussed on page 23. The only error was a reference twice to the 777's GE90 engines. United flies the PW4000 series engines, as is correctly indicated elsewhere in the book. My book is the 1998 reprint.
ITS JUST NOT WORTH IT!!!.......1999-01-13
Well, this book mistakes 777's for 727's, and 747's for 777's, so I would have to say that only buy this book if neccisary, for school projects and such. It has no mention of Shuttle, and even thouh it may be sad to say, they mention nothing abut the flaws, such as crashes and incedint! Overall, IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT!!!
gREAT History BUT noT cLEAR!.......1998-10-01
The book have made so much mistake and did not mention the ESOP and B777 very much, also United Shuttle and The largest Airlines in the world(ie United) But It did provide lot of good picture and history background, the price should be lower and all picture should be coloured.
A Good reference book.......1998-08-25
I have some problems with the book as there are some errors in some of the photographs and there is no mention of the ESOP or Shuttle by United. But overall it is a good research guide about the carrier
