A Great Place to Start!.......2000-09-07

I found Mancuso's Small Business Resource Guide quite helpful. This book gives the business "beginner" many useful contact options for each business subject catagory. I really liked the included telephone numbers! The only way I see to improve on this book would be to include Website address's for the contact options.

An Outstanding Guide to CV Preparation.......2002-04-07

In this time of traumatizing economic upheaval, every advantage in the competition for jobs, no matter how slight, matters. As such, how one presents oneself is often more important than what one presents to the public. Jackson's book, Prepare Your Curriculum Vitae, gives the intelligent job seeker an advantage in the job search in two ways. First, it prepares the reader emotionally for the task of charting one's life and career via detailed documentation of events and achievements. Second, it clearly and skillfully guides the reader through the mechanics of putting one's best foot forward on paper. As such, the book combines an emphasis on content with important dimensions of style to give the job seeker a crucial and badly needed advantage in the competition for jobs.

The first chapter, `Getting Started: The Emotional Dimension', offers excellent, quality exercises to put the reader in the proper frame of mind to write an outstanding and noticeable CV. A strong and successful CV is the product of considerable time and effort devoted to personal reflection. As such, the chapter helps to build a positive and realistic attitude toward CV preparation, and makes the writing process much easier to perform. After making an honest attempt to do the exercises in the first chapter, I was truly amazed at my own perspective, and what I as a person had accomplished. Before completing the exercises, I had held my accomplishments in very low regard, and I had the general impression that I did not know anything and had not done anything of true significance or value. As such, I see the first chapter as a psychologically beneficial means to boost both self-confidence and self-esteem.

Given the format and structure of the text, the second chapter on electronic resumes should have logically followed the chapters on drafting and preparing CVs and the chapter of sample CVs. The real work associated with CV preparation and writing begins with the third chapter, `Listing Competencies and Skills'. Here, in a five-step process, the text encourages the reader to identify his or her competencies and skills. For each competency and skill, the reader learns how to make both broad assessments and exacting statements about his or her level, or degree, of proficiency. The reader finally reviews his or her competencies, and then chooses which to state on the CV based on individual career objectives, position sought and the degree of importance of each competency. The fourth chapter immerses the reader in the preparation of working drafts. After presenting the contents of a typical CV to the reader, each portion of the CV, from the objectives and education to the interests and references, are subjected to a three-step process of draft, revision and final version. Once each part of the CV is completed, the entire CV is stylistically assembled in a way most pleasing to the potential viewers of the document. The fifth chapter gives the reader the usual advice regarding the polishing of the final draft of the CV. Chapters six and seven go through the mechanics of writing effective cover letters and other correspondence associated with job seeking, and provides numerous, detailed samples of each type of correspondence, as well as the successful distribution of your CV. Chapter eight offers numerous examples of CV organization and style across all disciplines at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels. Four appendices round out the book, and offer information on abbreviations, a list of action verbs used in resume preparation, contact information for selected professional organizations and societies, and a select list of books on style in writing.

The book repeatedly emphasizes that care should be taken to describe accomplishments in clear, concise terms, and that the content of the CV should be slanted toward the particular objective in mind. The text also stresses that because the CV serves simultaneously as a calling card and as marketing, sales and promotional material for the individual, it pays to be a strong advocate of oneself and one's accomplishments.

Apart from some minor organizational problems, the book is an excellent source of information and inspiration for those who have no previous experience writing CVs. More experienced and advanced individuals can still use this book as a basis for CV preparation, albeit at a faster pace than those new to the endeavor. No graduate student or professional should be without this important and invaluable text.

The other "CV" book "The Curriculum Vitae Handbook : How to Present and Promote Your Academic Career" by Rebecca Anthony and Gerald Roe cover more materials although this one provided some pratcical tips, such as Tips for Producing a Scannable Curriculum Vitae, 3 Listing Competencies and Skills Step I: Competencies Step II: Credentials Step III: Skills Step IV: Levels or Degrees of Proficiency Step V: Review and so on. I found this book helpful, although if you only have the budget to buy one CV book, I'll probably recommend the other one..

Apparently, Napoleon Hill's recording is in the public domain as this is a low cost mass produced cd with mp3 files. I envision someone burning dozens in their basement and selling them online. I bought it; it works, the content is great.

Really Great and Really Works!.......2007-04-06

If you're feeling discouraged or lacking direction, listen to this and other recordings like it. I like this one better than "Think and grow rich." Napoleon Hill has good guidance to keep you on track towards success and words that will lift your spirits and drive away the dark, negative thoughts that try to drag you down into failure. I think this recording should basically replace the bible. This IS my bible.

Lately, I have started asking my subconscious to give me guidance on what to do, to tell me what the best course would be to get to my goals. I recently started out with a certain business plan, but soon after I started, I realized that plan was seriously flawed. It would require too much work for too little profit. So I asked my subconscious to give me a better plan. I did this by visualizing getting the exact success I wanted. Within a day or two, I got a much better business plan from my subconscious. Then I asked for further help with the plan and I got that also. Now all the pieces are falling into place, and NOW, finally, it looks to me like success is imminent and I know exactly what I'm doing. I have recently studied marketing a lot, and I've also studied my particular field of business and thought about it. Then I left it up to my subconscious to process that information and give me the best plan to follow to achieve my goals. It all seems so easy now.

I used to be skeptical about using the power of my subconscious, but if you put yourself in a totally positive frame of mind and free yourself from doubts and fears, and then use the visualization techniques to see your success, then it DOES WORK. You open your mind to your subconscious and allow it to give you the answers you need - the direction and steps you need to proceed to your goals. You cast off your psychological limitations and allow yourself to proceed rapidly towards your goals. NEVER doubt your abilities. Do not worry about anything. But at the same time, act prudently, do your research, and use all the wisdom you've learned. Don't act foolishly or recklessly. Know what you're doing. Don't guess when you're starting a business.

Make sure you have plenty of paper and write down plenty of notes while you listen. You learn FAR better that way. Also it's nice to use pens of many different colors and alternate between them. Your notes stand out much more that way.

Your Right To Be Rich.......2007-02-28

If more people spent less time watching tv and more time educating themselves through these live lectures they would find more energy and probably get more excited about life, you only go round once. Life is an education and these recordings are straight to the point. The old ones are the best, most modern day speakers get their info from the likes of Dr. Hill, this audio programme is simply brilliant. I would also recommend the Science Of Personal Achievement and Think and Grow Rich.

Well Worth the Price.......2006-12-19

If you are a Napoleon Hill fan, (I became one not from "Think and Grow Rich" but from "The Master Key to Riches"),this will expound upon the great insights and truths he illuminates in his other works. He gives much more detail on how to pinpoint your definiteness of purpose, key ways to use autosuggestion, (very unclear in his other works), and exactly what consitutes a "mastermind". I also appreciated some of the "negatives" that are not referred to in his other works, such as keeping away from naysayers who will put you down, and the part envy plays in people who have no purpose wanting to sabatoge those who do (not the theme of his lectures, but showing you that his understanding is not a Pollyana type panacea).

All in all, this is more from the greatest genius in self-help. Wonderful~

Countless times my friends and I would repeat the phrase "If we only had stock in a particular "hot" product that we would be rich." And sadly, not one of us has ever taken the initiative to find out how to actually get into the stock market because we thought only the wealthy could afford the risk of investing.

The author, Charles V. Payne, clearly wants folks to stop making the "fat cats" richer off our spending trends and learn how the stock market works by understanding the concept, the language, and game strategies to enrich our lives and reap those benefits. He "keeps it simple" and "keeps it real" in his thoroughly written, knowledgeable, and witty book, "Be Smart, Act Fast, Get Rich.". It's a winner.

The only way one can get in the stock market game is to play. And why not learn from one of the truly successful men on Wall Street, who hailed from humble beginnings. Throughout his book, as one turns and reads the pages, you can feel his tenacity as he vividly describes his life when he purchased his first mutual fund at age seventeen and later started his own company.

Mr. Payne's book should be required reading for all high school and college seniors before they set out in the real world of financial dealings.

His book is not to be shelved, but used as a every day reference tool for those who delve into the stock market. It's a great gift for family and friends for the holidays, or any day.

This book is truly an educational tool for novices,pros,and anyone in between.Mr.Payne doesn't overwhelm you with sophisticated jargon instead he gives you precious gems in plain English.The explanations for charts and how they should fit into an investors strategy are priceless.I like the way this book approaches the mental aspects of stock investing and the discipline that needs to be exercised.This book isn't for daytrading or options gambling but what this book shows that many others don't is that you can build wealth in a steady manner by being smart,acting fast using the right knowledge and mentality.The stock market market isn't just for the big boys and insiders, it's for anyone who desires more out of life and is willing to work for it.

Fundamentals to live by.......2007-07-25

This book outlines practicle straight forward market knowledge written to focus investors on core fundamentals. Charles discusses this in lay persons terms while pointing out the function of the market from both sides of the street. The good, bad and the ugly. I've been investing for 15 years and it was a terrific tune up confirming many of the things I was doing right as an investor while providing clarity on lapses in my investing habits. This is a must read for all investors.

Get in the Stock Market: It is a Life Long Endeavor.......2007-07-12

As a small investor I work hard to keep track of future market trends. I found Mr. Payne's book to assist me in this endeavor. It logically organized, well written, but most of all an enjoyable read.

The author communicates the point that the stock market is a life long endeavor but most importantly to 'get in the game' because as trends show, the stock market goes up over time.

We also enjoy Charles on Fox News Saturday morning. We are very happy to have our point of view so eloquently presented.

A LOT OF WORDS AND LITTLE VALUE.......2007-07-10

This is a very disappointing book. Charles starts off right, talking about investing rather than trading (99% of us should do the former), but then spends a lot of time talking about trading techniques, chart formations, rumors and short term issues. Even when he talks about the fundamental analysis for finding stocks, he does not seem to be sure exactly what is the key item for asset slection. The charts are just terrible.
He could have written a much better book with half the pages.
In summary, it is a lot of rambling by a guy who is a good talker.
If you want some good books buy Ken Fisher's, "The Only Three Questions, ..." and Joel Greenblatt's "The Little Blue Book...."
