    China and Taiwan are two of the fastest growing economies of the newly industrialized countries. Much of this growth has come from multinational companies; partly, it has often been assumed, because the region provides a "pollution haven" multinationals would not enjoy elsewhere. Tsai tests this hypothesis with detailed empirical research. Focusing on the chemical sector, he compares the policies and behavior of three multinational corporations with three large local firms. His research shows that multinationals have created more enviromentallhy sound operations through local companies.

As is fitting from two authors who are practicing marketing consultants, the book also includes a wealth of practical tips for those who need to find new paths in this difficult manufacturing environment.           Kremer and McComas have compiled a solid, if not impressive, collection of various strategies for how to get the word out and differentiate yourself from your competitors, who are trying to do the exact same thing.

          Unlike Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR Wired, though, Kremer and McComas have written for the small to medium sized business. The title says Low-Impact, not No-Impact. Make sure your Marketing budget has more than just the price of the book before getting it.

          I am a small business owner and on a budget (who isn't?) but this book didn't fill all of the gaps for me. It offers some great ideas, but it is not the only book you should read when you are marketing your business. I also just read Guerrilla PR by Michael Levine and I feel that I have a better grasp of marketing because of it.

          I recently picked out John Kremer's High-Impact Marketing on a Low-Impact Budget randomly from the library shelf where all the other marketing books are perched. I think anyone who has read the book doesn't want anyone else to know it's secrets! I made the decision to purchase it before I finished reading the first chapter. I consider it an excellent find as it a helpful resource book and a must for anyone looking to sharpen their marketing skills.

Choosing the right career, what to do when the "new kid on the block" makes as much money as everyone else, coping with abrasive fellow workers and overbearing bosses, being tenacious and getting that promotion are a few of the areas highlighted in this book. You get what you give! Hard work, focus, and dedication to completing the task at hand leads to success. Success begets success. On the other hand whining begets "you know what"- and the inevitable "pink slip" aka job loss. Read the book and avoid that pink slip!

            I'm a big fan of the Ask Annie column in Fortune Magazine. But, wow, this book of hers is even better. It covers everything-- from how to get hired to how to fire once you're the boss. But what I really love is her down-to-earth tone: she talks right to you. She is way smart, but very nice about it, and funny, too. If you want the inside track on the job world, this is the book. She knows everything. A fantastic appendix of web sites, articles, you name it.

                This is not the feel good book of the summer, it almost scares the pants off of you given the many different ways faceless criminals can rudely interrupt your life with identity theft. This book details out many of the identity theft scams that are prevalent today. It shows you, maybe in a way that is a touch over the top, just how vulnerable you are. On the positive side it also gives you the tools to fight back and the steps you can take to protect yourself. It also instructs you on what you can do if you become an identity theft victim. The book details out how the world of credit operates and your rights and responsibilities.

                The current world we live in enables us to be discriminated against in the credit world because of our age, gender or marital status. The privacy of our financial information may be compromised and is so widely disseminated that it is making it more and more vulnerable to identity theft all the time. That is why this book is important, it gives the reader some tools to help us remain safe or at least less vulnerable. Overall the author gives the reader a number of useful and well described tips for how to keep as safe as possible and how to fix problems if they come up. It is a bit on the dramatic side, but if you are a victim of this type of crime then the descriptions are probably right on the mark.

                        4 out of 5 stars Excellent text - should be standard issue in market research organisations........2006-01-04

                        UK researchers Smith & Fletcher write clearly with a fine knack of turning the art and science of research analysis into a logical, well-explained process that incorporates not just hard quantitative evidence, but also qualitative research as well as - and this is what takes the book ahead of the field - the experience and judgment of the researcher as well. In essence they advocate a more holistic approach to incisive market research analysis: don't rely on one source, weigh up the broad spectrum of evidence, allow for imperfect data, apply some of your own knowledge filters (in my company and others these are simply known as BS Detectors)and don't forget to try reframing the data: looking at it from different contexts.

                        The techniques are all well explained, (including the mathematical techniques, not just the conceptual) and the authors do an admirable job of summarising their main points and making this a user-friendly "how-to" guide. Well done.

                        You can even go on-line and share with your colleagues an on-line tutorial based on this volume: so this text makes a really effective platform for training new staff and providing a refresher for more experienced researchers who may intuitively do a good job but may be assisted with a spritzer of more holistic thinking as well as with a re-establishment of first principles.

                        I do have criticisms of this book, and for these I've deducted one star.

                        My main criticism: the authors quite openly hold back some of their more progressive thinking, so what we get is a great roadmap that takes us to the goldfield, but doesn't quite help us hit paydirt. I found this particularly with their frequent reference to Bayesian thinking - an idea they raise but don't really explore. As such, I feel the book is somewhat "5 years ago" and could easily withstand an updating in the near future.

                        Having said that; any book that gives analysts and market researchers the state of the art, even of 5 years ago, is still way ahead of most of the volumes on the market. Market researchers are not brilliantly served by the publishing marketplace, and most texts are either too statistically focused (they seem to forget that survey data is pretty lumpy, categorical stuff based on questions that ask humans to somehow quantify their complex feelings)or too far based in marketing without giving us the crunch we need to turn data into hard-core insights. Most are simply too shallow - Research 101 written for marketers but not research practitioners.

                        Not here. This volume strikes a fine pragmatic, realistic balance in showing us how to use not just the mathematical tools we have available, but also our brains as experienced researchers confronting an array of soft and hard evidence. Art and science.

                        The authors successfully structure the big picture in a way that helps researchers navigate more clearly through research and analysis challenges.

                        I've recommended this volume to many colleagues senior and not so senior. If you're in market research you'll find this very useful both for you and your team.
