    Book Description

Landman studies four communally-oriented settings in Washington's urban environment. Through ethnographic field work she learned that cooperation, sociability, and self management overcame the common urban challenges posed by isolation and largely impersonal, single purpose contact with others. The settings were a cooperative food store, a cooperative bakery, community gardens, and a cooperatively owned low-cost housing project. Landman shows how the participants in these economically related activities are socially bound together in a web of relations considered unusual in large American cities, and how these exceptionally connected urban lives prove very satisfactory.

E-commerce increasingly means more than business-to-consumer online storefronts. There are myriad opportunities for retailers and suppliers alike to interconnect through business-to-business (or B2B) applications. XML is the key language for the job, and Microsoft's BizTalk--a product family still in its infancy--is shaping up to be a key solution-delivery system. Understanding BizTalk offers an early look at this promising product.

The book is an easy read for anyone moderately familiar with Web technologies. It surveys the challenges of B2B applications nicely with a look at some of the data interconnection approaches in use today. Then it segues smoothly to XML and BizTalk--the meat of the title. The discussion maintains a big picture feel, while still conveying enough details to send you away feeling educated. Plenty of architectural diagrams help illustrate system designs and information flow.

Microsoft development tool jockeys will enjoy the chapter that previews the still unreleased Microsoft Commerce Server 2000--a product that will build on its powerful Site Server Commerce product with a full-fledged implementation of BizTalk. The brief case study of ARAMARK's MyAssistant portal--a sophisticated point of contact for that company's customers and business partners--is a good one. Further case studies would have been helpful, but this still is a good book for any Web developer who wants to get on the B2B train. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Distributed applications, B2B e-commerce, XML, BizTalk initiative, XML parsers & tools, BizTalk Server, planning BizTalk systems, Microsoft Commerce Server 2000, Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), and ARAMARK case study.

      1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2001-07-06

This book was written before the BizTalk Server product became available. It's a waste of time and money if you are trying to learn the server product.

2 out of 5 stars Just a brief Introduction to Biztalk.......2000-08-09

This book come little bit too early. So those tiny information about Biztalk could only cover the JumpStart Kit, instead of a "more complete" Technology Preview / Alpha Version. This book is only for those who need a really quick and high-level introduction on what's Biztalk for. It's not for developers.

      1 out of 5 stars A very shallow presentation.......2000-07-23

The authors spend a great deal of time (and many pages) going over XML under the guise of preparing the reader to understand the underpinnings of BizTalk. In reality, they're clearly just filling out the book.

They then touch upon BizTalk itself in as shallow a manner as possible, after which they switch to talking about the BackOffice 2000 offerings that will interact with the BizTalk Server.

Again, the BackOffice products are covered with incredible shallowness.

The case study at the end is more of the same - basically, the user wanted openness and flexibility, so they used XML and BizTalk. Again, no real details.

Unfortunately, there is very little out yet about the BizTalk server. Even so, only the most uniformed managers will learn much new from this book. ....

3 out of 5 stars The good news is, this is the BEST BizTalk book available..........2000-05-09

      -

The bad news is, this is the ONLY BizTalk Book available. The book is "OK" but the bulk of the book is about XML.

It's an easy read for a geek, but doesn't get very specific or deep into BizTalk Technologies.

Still, readinq it is quicker than playing around with the jumpstart kit.

I hope somebody writes an "in depth" BizTalk book soon !

1 out of 5 stars Developers, don't waste your time.......2000-04-05

Here's the deal from a developers viewpoint. 1) The book is about the MS Commerce Server 2000. So if you have the quickstart kit, forget this book. And since I cannot get my hands on an alpha or beta of Commerce 2000, it is mostly useless. Here's 2 key points that will save you the bucks; Commerce 2000 has a catalog API (COM) built on XML and BizTalk is tightly integrated into Commerce 2000. You now owe me the cost of this book! 2) It's an overview book plain and simple. If you are a developer like me and hope to get real info on techniques, or even examples, forget it. There are just about no examples in this book (none of any use). The kit eclipses this book in examples. 3) If there are things that are unclear in the quickstart kit, they will remain unclear after you read the book. And by the way, it is a thin book. And it is clear that they stretched the contents (you developers know what I mean).

But I will say that if you have no idea what BizTalk is and you are a manager not a developer, this book would be of value.

4 out of 5 stars Good starting place...........2000-05-23

I found the culture shock series to be enjoyable reading accross the board, and this business based volume both informative and largely up to date. The business information is based on 98 which makes it only slightly dated, with only the latest goverment incentives missing. The sections on dealing with culture differences were very enlightening (non-confrontational style of thailand verses the "you are just a cog, and here is an in your face review of performance" style of the western world). The rehashing of basics you'll find other places is placed here just in case you missed it (not touching a thai's head, use of left hand, etc.). Although this wouldn't be my only source of information, it is a valuable one in a limited field.

                Book Description

South Korean conglomerates, or "chaebol," such as Hyundai and Samsung play a far more important role in Korean economy than do comparable large firms in the United States' and Japanese economies. Despite the importance of the chaebol to the rapid postwar development of the Korean economy, little has been written about their origins during the Japanese occupation. Through case studies of local ownership in major financial, commercial and industrial ventures, this book provides a detailed picture of indigenous capitalism during Japanese colonization. Drawing on Japanese government sources, Korean biographies and diaries, interviews, and United States intelligence material, the author gives a compelling account of key personalities in the Korean business elite and of the personal dilemmas of balancing nationalism against success under dependent, colonial conditions. The author concludes that dependent rather than comprador capitalism characterized leading Korean business through 1945. Patterns of concentration within family enterprises, close ties with the colonial state, and mutual support among a Korean inner circle of business leaders constitute a legacy of the colonial period important to the subsequent development of Korean conglomerates.

                Book Description

In today's competitive economic environment, knowing your customer has never been more important. Research shows that most companies do not segment their market by lifestyle. Instead, they rely solely on demographic factors to define their customers. This book helps marketers understand how to reach customers in the following categories:
              • Singles
              • Teenagers
              • Children
              • "Tweens"
              • College students
              • Seniors
              • And Americans from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds Yet another consumer group evaluated here is the emerging affluent market. This book is a prerequisite to relationship marketing. It tells the reader how to reach carefully defined and described market segments. Because buyers' behaviors are so important to lifestyle market segmentation strategies, this book demonstrates how such trends as cross-shopping and the blurring of gender roles can be accounted for by one's overall marketing strategy.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing in the extreme.......2006-09-09

This book had a couple of big flaws. One was that much of the material was superficial and obvious. The other was that it was terribly written, and must have had an unskilled editor. After reading a particularly incoherent "case study" that barely supported the book's thesis, and may have mildly undermined it, I just had to stop reading it.

                    Book Description

The way in which regulation works is a key concern of industries, consumers, citizens, and governments alike. Understanding Regulation takes the reader through the central issues of regulation and discusses these from a number of disciplinary perspectives. This book is written by a lawyer and an economist, but looks also towards business, political science, sociology, social administration, anthropology, and other disciplines. The fundamental strategies, institutions, and explanations of regulation are reviewed and the means of identifying `good' regulation are outlined. Individual chapters look at such topics as self-regulation, the regulation of risks, the cost-benefit testing of regulation, the importance of enforcement, and the challenge of regulating within Europe. The book's second part considers a series of issues of particular concern in modern utilities regulation, including the use of RPI-X price caps, the control of service quality, franchising techniques and ways of measuring regulatory performance. Questions of accountability and procedure are then examined and recent public debates on regulatory reform are reviewed. A central argument of Understanding Regulation is that regulation inevitably gives rise to political contention but that persons of different political persuasion can nevertheless converse sensibly on the search for better regulation.
