5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a way to learn economics!.......1996-05-26

A great way to learn economics! How much money did the United States really borrow for the Louisiana Purchase and why have we been borrowing ever since? Why do people believe that dollar bills (just pieces of green paper) have value? How are Eli Whitney and Bill Gates similar? The answers to these questions and many more are given by Elaine Schwartz in Econ 101 1/2. Focusing on one economic area in each chapter, Schwartz uses entertaining stories and anecdotes to explain how the U.S. economy works. As one reviewer said, "To mere mortals who managed to make it through Economics 101 and 102 with a glimmering of comprehension, Elaine Schwartz has performed a miracle: she has made the subject understandable, interesting, and even amusing."

2 out of 5 stars No technical details, bias suggestions, too much text.......2000-02-05

I am disappointed about this book mainly because (1) there is no technical discussion about the setup of storefront and payment gateway (2) the authors recommend advertiser's services...kind of bias (3) it does not cover all the latest technologies, despite the fact that it's published in Sep 1999! (4) there is too much unnecessary text with repetitive info and most importantly (5) I still don't know how to set up an e-commerce solution on a dedicated hosting platform, after reading this 394 pages book in a week. If you are reading Business 2.0 or Inter@active week already, don't buy this book. However, if you are new to e-com and want to get a quick grasp of the major components, this book may help you.

In today's ultra-competitive commercial climate, the businesses that truly succeed are the businesses that really stand out. Nichecraft: Using Your Specialness to Focus Your Business, Corner Your Market, and Make Customers Seek You Out, is author and consultant Dr. Lynda Falkenstein's blueprint for differentiating a product or service from the competition and then parlaying its unique position into long-term success. The practical nine-step guide includes plenty of actual examples along with numerous exercises and worksheets.

Book Description

Every company and individual is aware, often painfully, of how crowded and competitive their field of business has become. It's not enough to be just the first nor even the best: no single company can own a good idea for too long because eventually someone else will find out that they, too, can make money by offering the same thing. Now everyone from one-person business-owners to heads of Fortune 500 companies are asking themselves, "How can I continue to stand out from the competition in the midst of all this change?"

In this completely updated, newest edition of her internationally acclaimed book, Nichecraft: Using Your Specialness to Focus Your Business, Corner Your Market, and Make Customers Seek You Out, Dr. Lynda C. Falkenstein has provided an answer for anyone who has something to sell. Dr. Falkenstein explains the theory and strategies of nichecrafting, and why, in a climate of razor sharp competition, the pursuit of excellence is simply not enough. The only goal worth pursuing is making yourself and your product perceived as special.

Nichecraft, however, is more than just a description of yet another theory on how to build a successful business: it is a step-by-step practical guide to putting into practice what Falkenstein preaches. Nichecraft transcends its field, just as she teaches the reader to do, by offering far more than a summary of nichecrafting and showing examples of how others have successfully put her strategy to use. She provides a simple-to-follow, nine-step blueprint for identifying and developing a niche and using it to sell your product or service. The hands-on approach is emphasized with worksheets and exercises to help readers develop their nichecrafting abilities.

While incorporating the best of her first edition, this millennium edition Nichecraft includes an entirely new chapter titled "Making Your Niche Rich on the Net." Here Dr. Falkenstein offers even more practical tips how to use the internet as a strategic tool in defining and making a lucrative niche.

On the whole, this book is top-notch. It brings together a number of common-sensical ideas and concepts that are extremely useful in focusing a business on what it does best. There is room for improvement in how the material is presented though, that would help the book's readability and usability. Dr. Falkenstein has put together some great material! I look forward to more!

2 out of 5 stars Smug rather than supportive.......2003-06-08

There are way too many negative examples in this book - case studies of what stupid or weak-willed people did wrong, in the author's opinion. She does have a lot of insight into how to build a niche, but she delivers her knowledge with a sharp-edged know-it-all attitude that I could not take after a while. Despite being a marketing consultant who wanted to recommend this book to clients, I could not finish reading the book, I found it so offensive in tone.

Over the years I've collected and read just about every book on marketing and building businesses that is on the market. Some have been very good. Nichecraft, however, is far and away the most insightful and innovative book of its kind I've ever run across. If I'd had this book when I started my business 15 years ago, it would have saved me a fortune in lost time and wasted efforts. One of the best things about this book is its practical step-by-step approach. Dr. Falkenstein lays out her nine-step process clearly and with great style. Her experience comes through loudly and clearly. Although I am a professional photographer and am applying Nichecraft's principles to my own specific business, I can see that it would be invaluable for any business in today's environment. It is so good, I ordered copies for everyone in my company.

1 out of 5 stars Please, do NOT buy this book........2001-02-07

If you're like me, you own a business and are trying to learn more to make yourself successful. Although I have found a few worthwhile books, "Nichecraft" is not one of them. By page 21 I had encountered so many spelling, grammatical, and punctuation errors, I had to turn to the front to see what publisher let this one get out. I was not surprised to learn that the book was published by the author herself. Even the cover has a spelling error.

If you can get past the poor writing, you will find it bereft of substance. The book reads like a 3AM infomercial: full of excitement, buzzwords, and promises but offering little help. The examples contain no real insight, the myriad steps are repetitious, contradictory, and are often so poorly written I cannot decipher them after three readings. Several of the graphics only serve to further confuse the text.

We are all looking for books that can help us make sense of marketing. This is not one of them. I beg you to spare yourself this waste of time. I rate this book 1 Star because it is the lowest rating available.

hey, wetfeet! tks a bunch for providing me with this great little guide. it's just what i needed. i was looking for something that would give me the quick & dirty on deloitte consulting--in other words, sometimes i come across guides that give page after page of info, but there's no point of view, no clear indication of what's important and what's not, and i think: "can you just give me the most important stuff? what are the essential things i need to know to get in the door here? that's it!" and that's what i got from your guide. i especially liked the 2-page cheat sheet at the front that gave me soundbites on what the company's looking for, what its strengths are, what i should think about going into the interview, and basic stats. tks again! i'm looking into a few of your other guides to get me up to speed on what i really need to know.

The author brings out the best in one of the most complicated and debatable subjects. Helpful in thinking very objectively and one can use it as a precursor to any strategy work one is doing. Would recommend it strongly to any MBA student and formulators of strategy who usually depend on "superior common sense" rather than objective analysis that Ohmae brings out. Top class work.

              Book Description

`What is needed . . . is a cool, detached look at environmental and social responsibility in the context of the firm . . . and which utilises the formidable insights that come from the dramatic developments in economics in the last few decades. This is why I welcome Jean-Baptiste Lesourd and Steven Schilizzi's book. It takes the viewpoint of the firm and brings it to bear on the various issues and the general findings of the theories of industrial organisation and microeconomics. This volume is not littered with maths and formal proofs, rather the intuition and results from that thinking have been turned into practical observation and recommendation.'

              - From the foreword by David Pearce, OBE, CSERGE, University College London and University of East Anglia, UK

This book asks an important question of how management of the environment may benefit firms. The authors take an objective, neutral perspective on the extent to which environmental issues should, or should not, be addressed within the management of business corporations.

The Environment in Corporate Management includes an up-to-date treatment of business practices, norms and standards, using the tools of microeconomic and industrial organization analysis to provide an ordered and consistent picture. The analysis is couched within stakeholder theory, which determines how costs and benefits are defined for the firm. Utilizing the most recent information, the book also focuses on the underlying long-term trends. Actual examples and case studies illustrate the discussions. The authors conclude by highlighting the inevitable need to link environment and finance for better stakeholder relationships and business performance.

This unique book is written clearly and accessibly, but with a firm grounding in academia to challenge scholars and researchers in areas including: environmental studies, business, economics and finance. Practitioners will also find the book of great interest.

              Book Description

Written by one of the foremost experts on segmented marketing, this volume shows how businesses can prosper in the rapidly changing, fragmented markets of the 1990s by adopting a new, highly effective marketing strategy--the lifestyle approach. Author Chester Swenson profiles the major and emerging consumer segments, among them the 50-plus generation, women, college students, Hispanics, and African Americans, and shows how to reach these markets through precisely targeted, personalized marketing campaigns that take into account a segment's demographics, attitudes, values, interests, community activities, and affiliations. Successful lifestyle programs introduced by major companies like Reebok, 3M, and Coca-Cola are used throughout the discussion to illustrate aspects of the lifestyle marketing strategy. Swenson also challenges conventional marketing protocols, norms, and wisdom, revealing misconceptions about specific consumer segments and identifying marketing blunders that have resulted from a failure to understand the new market realities. Swenson begins by exploring the applications of segmented marketing to the global markets of the next decade. He describes the process of lifestyle marketing, which involves creating an affinity or emotional attraction to a particular product or service by linking it with the preferred lifestyles of potential consumers. Frequently, Swenson shows, this is achieved through affiliations with individuals, organizations or activities that are integral to a target consumer segment. He offers tips for arranging endorsements, working with nonprofit associations in cause-related marketing campaigns, and building strategic alliances with other companies. Each of the major market segments is discussed in depth in a separate chapter that not only provides current demographic information but also discusses their media usage, attitudes, affiliations, leisure time activities, and role models. Swenson then looks ahead to pinpoint emerging marketing opportunities offered by Asian-American consumers, military families, and active environmentalists. Certain to become the standard source on lifestyle marketing, Swenson's work will be indispensable for advertising and marketing executives concerned about maintaining the competitive edge in an increasingly fragmented marketplace.

The book seems somewhat outdated, but it is still worth a quick glance as it gives you hints on how hispanic/african americans/women/etc can be reached through marketing. If you are into small firm marketing, with a tight budget and want ideas on how to market the firm, then this is NOT the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Always top quality.......2000-02-26

Chester Swenson does everything top quality. This book will live up to every readers' expectations...and I'm not saying this just because he's my uncle.

                Book Description

The pace of economic integration amongst European Union (EU) member states has accelerated considerably during the past decade, highlighted by the process of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). Many aspects of the EU's apparatus, however, have failed to evolve in order to meets these new challenges.

This book explores the issues of fiscal federalism within the context of EU integration from theoretical, historical, policy and global perspectives. It contrasts the pace of integration amongst EU member states with failure of financial and administrative apparatus to evolve to encompass fiscal federalism, i.e. the development of a centralized budgetary system.

This impressive collection, with contributions from a range of internationally respected authors, shall interest students and researchers involved with European economics and economic integration. Its accessible style will also make it extremely useful to policy-makers and professionals for whom European economic integration is a daily topic of conversation.

                  Book Description

The book offers a comprehensive empirical analysis of the determinants of changes in the distribution of expenditure and revenue-raising powers among fiscal tiers in OECD countries. Using a new indicator of fiscal decentralisation which accounts for subnational decision-making autonomy, common decentralisation trends are investigated. Then, empirical evidence from panel analyses is provided for the role of costs, preferences and institutions in explaining fiscal federal structures, and for the impact of economic and political integration on the degree of government decentralisation, particularly among EU countries. Finally, the historical experience of Germany is used to explore long-term developments in the public sector.

                      Book Description

Market-defining since it was first introduced, International Business, 4e by Charles W. L. Hill, continues to set the standard for international business textbooks. Charles Hill’s reputation as a leading thinker and actor in the international arena precede him, and he is regularly asked to explain world economic events on National Public Radio. His expertise lends itself to a book that is thorough and up-to-date. Because many issues in international business are complex, they necessitate exploration of pros and cons of economic theories, government policies, business strategies, organizational structures, etc. The author challenges the often shallow explanations that other books offer, while maintaining a tight integrated flow between the chapters. Hill’s book is practical in nature, focusing on managerial implications of each topic on the actual practice of international business. The author’s passion and enthusiasm for the international business arena is apparent on every page as he strives to make important theories interesting, informative, and accessible to all students.

                      4 out of 5 stars Hill's International Business.......2007-09-27

Great book for my MBA course in International Business. It is well organized, full of clearly defined principles, and loaded with case studies.

                      1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-06-28

I think that these reviews are for the textbook and not for this "outline." This product is nothing but a glossary and binder paper. It isn't worth half the price. I'm very, very disappointed. Most of the definitions are repeated in other chapters and it gives definitions for words like "Disney," and "Accounting." This thing is completely useless to me.

5 out of 5 stars Culture, Economics, Stategy, and Corportate Functions.......2007-05-17

I've used previous editions of this text in my international business course, and have decided to adopt this one as well. The text does a great job of hitting every topic that international business people/corporations need to know. The text covers country differences, economics, strategy, and corporate functions.
Another Amazon review incorrectly suggested that the author of this text is biased politically and in favor of larger firms. If the author intended to introduce a political bias in the text he certainly could have done it with the cases, but it is clear from reading such cases as the Kellogg Brown & Root case on page 190 that the author has no particular axe to grind. It is, in short, simply impossible to guess the author's political orientation.
The book also has no bias in favor of larger firms. The business school in which I teach is (in fact) oriented towards entrepreneurship and smaller firms. The text was selected, in part, because the information imparted would be just as valuable to small firms as it would be to the large. The author specifically addresses the topic of "mini-multinationals" as well as topics that would be of interest primarily to smaller firms.

5 out of 5 stars smooth transaction, exact product, nice&easy supplier.......2007-05-14

3 out of 5 stars Bias written into text.......2007-05-13

If you don't mind your information being written from the Western, pro Big-Business, capitalist view, the bias conveyed throughout the text won't be a problem. But if you are looking for something objective, something to fairly present the concepts associated with globalization, search elsewhere.

In the first two chapters alone, several instances of bias are written into the text. For example, in the first chapter, protesters of the WTO are referred to as "anarchists" and in the second chapter the difference between communists and social democrats is claimed to be that communists use violence in their revolutions. This is clearly not the case. While historically this may be true of the revolts, this is not even close to the fundamental difference between the two groups. For the first example, it can be seen that thousands of people gather to protest the WTO and it is certain that a select few, if any, consider themselves anarchists.

It is clear where the author stands!
