Customer Reviews:
At least we have this work.......2006-11-23
Good social/economic histories are rare and we are fortunate to have this study for Puerto Rico. It is too easy to forget how life was prior to the demographic explosion of the early 20th century. Many areas had just a few thousand inhabitants. The book also demonstratedse the importance of the Munoz Marin strategy of economic development. If there is any weakness, I think a more detailed analysis of the dependence of PR on the US is warranted. If we compare Puerto Rico to the Dominican Republic, we see a society in which welfare/food stamps programs raised food costs etc. and displaced local agriculture and production. In the Dominican Republic local production remains and costs remain low because of the much lower per capita income. Sea-Land is not referenced in the book. I would point out that his statistics do document the unbalanced nature of trade and the issue of trading with other Caribbean nations given US trade policies. The challenge of continued development requires greater production of domestic goods in Puerto Rico and the ability to trade freely with surrounding economies. In sum, this work is an excellent start for improved understanding of the Commonwealth and its status in the US and the region.
An excellent work.......2006-09-30
In this book James Dietz works on the economial history of the island of Puerto Rico. Dietzs work makes him a pioneer with a complete summary in this subject. The chapters are well written, aslo the works uses ilustrations and graphs which makes this book easy to read. This book covers from the colonization and concludes with an analysis of the actual economy. Excellent work.

Book Description
Sebastian Dullien gives a novel explanation for unemployment and inflation in the Euro-Zone. He argues that unemployment stems from a lack of cooperation between unions and monetary authorities: In an economy with endogenous money as EMU, wage setters are responsible for price stability while the central bank is responsible for the level of output. Cooperation between both actors is necessary for high employment and low inflation. The current institutional set-up is found to be unable to assure cooperation.

Book Description
The monetary union is the most significant accomplishment in recent European construction. The question of how the euro did or did not affect and will in the future affect systems of national industrial relations lies at the heart of the book. Six countries - Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, France and Finland - are in this respect analysed and the differences as well as the similarities are put forward. As a starting point, the transition to a monetary regime aiming at low inflation, from one aiming at full employment needs to be taken into account. In this framework, the Maastricht Treaty acts as a continuity rather than as a breaking-point. Far from economic determinism, some countries have dealt with the uncertainties linked to the transition towards the single currency through national social pacts. The monetary union has been a restraint as well as a pretext to finalise long-term undergoing reforms, although some member states appear more apt to confront the challenges of a single currency than others. The example of German reunification illustrates the difficulties of adapting to a monetary union among regions with different levels of development. In conclusion, the prospects of a European co-ordination in regard to wage policies are developed.

Customer Reviews:
A decent book to get you started on ASP.NET.......2005-11-11
As a .NET middletier developer who has never ventured much into ASP.NET GUI development, I found this book to be pretty informative to get started on 'How-to' do many things...all compiled into one single place. e.g. to get a page up and running with a bunch of useful controls on it instead of wading through pages and pages of documentation or descriptions given in other books.
I sat and compared the OReilly cook book which was also good but half of that book is filled with lots of unrelated code (both VB and C#) which is distracting when u want to focus on something specific. And to me having a book that explains simple things too much in detail makes it boring!.
This book is not for advanced programmers who write jazzy sites nor for people who dont know how to spell aspx but should be helpful for all others in-between as a recipe book of how to do something...quick.
And that really helps when preparing for interviews!
Not worth the money........2005-03-30
This book has many many examples. However, they are not documented very well. Most all of them are useless also. I'd pay $5 to $10 MAX! Save your money and buy a good book from the Microsoft Press.
Book for the novices.......2005-01-08
This book is definately for the novice crowd. I was expecting some more advanced concepts or examples, but found very basic info. I didn't learn a single new thing about .NET by using this book, and especially when you compare it to other books.
The book really just goes into some basic examples in each chapter followed by some code to go with it, but there are no real tips or tricks of value. Everything in here is a rehash of what's on MSDN, the web or in other books.
Incomplete - really.......2004-09-21
I liked the book for the format but my copy is missing many pages! It jumps from page 190 directly to page 239! No they were not taken out of the book, the book binding is perfect - no tears, no rips - just missing! I'm returning it and looking elsewhere.
For beginners only!.......2004-08-16
If you've been seriously programming for a while in ASP.NET, don't waste your time with this book. Having spent a lot of time searching and reading on msdn.microsoft.com and other sites to enhance my skill set, I bought this book thinking I would find some advanced concepts that I haven't already picked up on my own. There are no advanced concepts, just a bunch of very simple examples, some of which do not even work. I was very disappointed with this book and sent it back the same day it arrived.

This book was written for the Novice in Web Catalogs.......1997-12-20
This book is written for the beginner in Web Catalogs. If you have an idea of what a Web Catalog can do for you and how you want to display your information, dont bother reading this book. I also didn't like the fact that it dealt with their included software package.
Informative, Good for Beginners.......1997-09-22
I am just beginning on developing a site for a retail store. Hope is that this site can literally be another distribution avenue. I believe this book gets people going in the right direction. A series of reference books are helpful to have in addition as the provided information is a bit thin. I would have loved to seen more information on alternative sources/techniques and methods of achieving what the provided GT/Catalog software was designed to do, like: creating managing server databases, JavaScript coding, etc. I understand that they want to push their software, but sometimes it seems a bit excessive to the point that it neglects to mention or give specific examples of alternative methods for achieving the same features found in the provided software. I had the feeling at times that their software was the only solution and you'd have to pay $800 for a full version of it. Don't get me wrong, if you don't have the time or resources to program for yourself, this is a great alternative. It would have also been nice to have an html version of the book on the cd as well

Really a waste of money........1999-06-01
Beware of authors who cannot spell "degradation" and beware of programmers who cannot write 6 lines of code that return what they say it will. There must be something better out there.
Not for the introductory user or the eager do-er.......1999-06-01
This book is a good read for managers who want to know what ecommerce entails, not for the grunts who have to get the job done. The author offers a clear overview of all the issues you will encounter in tackling today's ecommerce systems. It does not give you a how-to and it will not get your store online in 12 easy steps. Don't be misled by advertising: there is no quick and easy way to get a credit-card enabled web-store up and running in the blink of an eye. It is a complicated process that requires considerable setup, management, programming and banking.
A carelessly published and aimless book!.......1999-04-05
As I'm buying books to learn about the web technologies I intend to participate in, I have come across many excellent texts. This book, however, is chock full of typos, truncated graphics, and topics that don't add up to teaching me how to implement an eCommerce web site.
After buying some other reference books, I needed a '2nd' reference and pulled out this one. I was even more dismayed than the first time I tried it after having sampled professionally handled texts.
Don't waste your money. I am now leery of Wiley Publishing (if THIS could get past them....)
Essentially a book of programming code and typos galore!.......1999-03-01
This book claims to appeal to both novice and expert, but any novice wouldn't get past the first chapter. It is simply too complicated to understand or hold interest. It also doesn't give you a positive outlook on finding a host for your Web pages. And the typos in this book are innumerable! Good thing I know something about computers or I would be really lost!

Book Description
Fully updated and revised third edition. The best-selling and most comprehensive book about living and working in New Zealand since it was first published in 1999, containing twice as much information as similar books.
Customer Reviews:
really out of date and not too helpfull.......2002-02-10
I found thins book to be not at all helpfull to me in moving to New Zealand. In fact I found it to be very out of date and the back section that talks about the Kiwi people and their way of life seemed depressing to me. I found the book to be constantly stereo typeing Kiwis. Sheep, beer, rugby etc. I think that the information in this book was true 10 years ago but a lot has changed in New Zealand in that time, especially in the cities. The information in this book is all available on the internet and it is constantly updated there.
This Book is good.......2001-12-29
I read this book before i went on a vacation to New Zealand last year. It was fairly informative. If you have absolutely no knowledge of the country, this book will be very helpful. However books such as this one are not extremely useful, even if they were updated each year. (which this book isn't) The section about Television in New Zealand was outdated. This book makes it seem that even the best satellite service will not compare to even cable in the US. In other words, their television offerings are scarce. However, I found that to be untrue. Sky TV offers many channels and has good variety. This is just an example of how this book cannot possibly keep you informed about a rapidly changing country like New Zealand. The point is, if you really want the scoop on living in New Zealand, ask your friends who've visited for information. An even better way is to search on the internet. Go to a chatroom that has New Zealand inhabitants and ask them. They are very friendly.
Thank you, Mark! This book is a godsend!.......2001-07-30
I bought this book about a year ago, just as I was beginning to think of a move to New Zealand. Well, here we are, one year later... and I'll be there in four weeks time!
This book helped me so much that I simply had to write a review of it before leaving. There are only about twenty books on my list to take with me to NZ, and this is one of them. I can't recomend it highly enough.
I've been to NZ a handfull of time now. I find this book to be right on the mark. It captures just about everything you need to know about living and working in NZ, and many thing you don't need to know... but are entertaining in their own right.
Mr. Hempshell touches on everything that a prospective migrant would want to know, with a great deal of humor as well (I love the little cartoons). I also bought books which were supposed to be about immigrating to NZ. Steer clear of these books. They tell you nothing that you can't find out for yourself on the NZ immigration web site.
If you are thinking of moving to NZ this is the book for you. Of all the books about NZ I've bought this year, this is the only one I still refer to. You'll not go wrong, trust me.
Very thorough book - has all the info you need.......2000-06-19
I thought this was a good, thorough book that contained all the info you might need to know if you're considering moving to New Zealand.
