Book Description

The years 1998 and 1999 were filled with economic events that illustrated the changing and complex agenda for American foreign policy inentering the new millennium. In this volume, former senior members of the Clinton and Bush Administrations and a "next generation" ofprivate sector voices set forth and analyze the new intersections between economic strategy and national security. Emerging markets areconsidered, as well as new threats and new opportunities that are changing our conception of American security. This book arises from a three-year project by the Council on Foreign Relations, one of the world's premier foreign policy think tanks, toarticulate a "Next Generation" approach to American foreign policy. The volume is intended for those interested in foreign policy and as asupplement to university level courses on international relations and business. The financial, trade, technology, and regional and sectoral topics covered by this book are especially timely. World financial markets haveshowed themselves to be increasingly integrated and volatile with the introduction of new information technologies. Global markets for goodshave showed themselves to be more fragmented and more difficult to free because of populist concerns over labor and environmentalprotections. Meanwhile, electronic commerce will change international economic relations. Regionally,Asia and Russia-our post-Cold Warfocus-are economically in turmoil. Latin America, our fastest growing market and prospective twenty-first century focus, is teetering due tothe lack of foreign reserves. In addition to these changing dynamics, new economic threats such as corruption and information terrorism counter balance newopportunities to influence the world through American know-how in technology and venture capital. As evidenced most clearly by the October 1998 vote on Fast Track trade authority for the president, domestic audiences seem to be fueled more by negative messages brought by "economic nationalists" than by those who seek a more "internationalist" approach. Thiscommunications reality is dangerous and requires attention by the new generation of American leaders who have begun their run for thepresidency by the time this book reaches the shelves. This book begins to outline new concepts-political, economic, and philosophical-for American foreign policy in the twenty-first century. Inaddition, it seeks to drive home the need for the American people to better understand our likely engagement in the new world upon which weare embarking.

    Book Description

Ungerer provides a comprehensive, yet concise and accessible history of European monetary integration over the past fifty years, from the European Payments Union (EPU) to the realization of economic and monetary union (EMU) as mapped out in the Maastricht Treaty. Monetary policy and institutional developments in the quest for European integration are examined against their political background and placed in the broader context of international monetary developments, in particular those concerning the U.S. dollar. Ungerer reviews the economic and monetary policy provisions of the European Economic Community (EEC) Treaty and discusses early proposals for closer monetary policy cooperation and plans for economic monetary union, including the Werner report. The features and evolution of the common European exchange rate systems--the "snake" and in particular, the European Monetary System--are examined. The author discusses the negotiations leading to and the provisions of the Maastricht Treaty and also analyzes benefits and costs of EMU. The crises in the European Monetary Union 1992-1993 cast doubt on whether EMU was still a realistic goal. However, Ungerer shows that the political determination to move on remained undiminished. He discusses the extensive preparations for the creation of a European Central Bank and the single European currency, the "euro," and the efforts to ensure its stability. Finally, the book provides an outlook on the main monetary policy issues that confront the European Union and the challenges arising from a strengthening of the political structure of the European Union and the membership applications of many countries in the Mediterranean and in Central and Eastern Europe.

1 out of 5 stars How Computer Science Professors publish Student papers.......1999-09-14

It was amazing to read this book and find numerous mentions of "In this paper" and so on. The book covers some interesting titles but gives very little technical or business applications. The editing is of course horrible. After some research on the authors, it was intersting to find some of their students research papers resembling the text from the chapters...Shame on them.

5 out of 5 stars Very well-written, informative, and concise.......1999-08-05

I am enjoying reading this book. The authors have done an excellent job in bringing together three diverse areas that are all so important for electronic commerce. As electronic commerce is being adopted rapidly across industry sectors, government, and education, a deep understanding of the main issues of electronic commerce is a must and also something that many people are looking for.

This book is an excellent attempt at viewing electronic commerce in the light of its technological, business, and policy-oriented issues. I also enjoyed having a comprehensive reference of the literature in this field.

If you are looking for a particular aspect of electronic commerce, for example, web technology, you will probably find other books that have dedicated discussions on that topic. In fact there is no shortage of books that address specific technical aspects of electronic commerce. However, they might not provide you with a general understanding of the wholistic picture that this book provides. I look forward to seeing another edition of this book.

1 out of 5 stars Save your receipt.......1999-07-19

I am half way through the book and I've decided to return it. Once you boil down the wordy sentences, there is not much real content left. No surprise that three of the four authors are academics and the fourth is a consultant.

I also couldn't swallow the numerous typos and editing mistakes. A typo or two is no big deal, but this was ridiculous. Whoever did the editing at Prentice Hall should be demoted.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the field.......1999-04-09

This is an excellent book. It is very well-written, concise, and yet it covers a wide range of topics. I liked the technical coverage of the related issues, particularly the coverage of data warehousing, multimedia, and workflow sections. The case studies are also very useful, something that I have not found in any other publications on Electronic Commerce. I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for either a comprehensive coverage or a quick look up of a specific aspect of Electronic Commerce.

5 out of 5 stars Complete and In-depth.......2001-08-16

This is not one of those books filled with pep talks and exhortations to overcome stage fright or thinly veiled Toastmaster "how to". It's about the realities of delivering technical presentations as either the speaker or the coordinator of a presentation. To be sure, it does address some of the basics, such as how to clarify your message with an outline, dealing with hostile audiences, and how to create effective visual aids that reinforce your message.

What sets this book apart, though, is the way the author addresses the logistical issues, which can be a coordinator's nightmare. The advice given is born of experience and enduring the last minute pressures of getting on a plane to do an unplanned presentation the next morning. As life would have it, such events depend on luck and demonstration equipment or software functioning perfectly. As Murphy's Law would have it, these events age one rapidly. But the author thoroughly covers all of the issues and factors, including scheduling and logistics and how to coordinate the complexities of preparing the site. He also goes into minute details of site selection and optimum room layout, audience (and speaker) comfort and safety and coordinating multiple speakers. Here is an example of the level of detail the book goes into, showing how well thought out the material is: managing speaking events in multilingual audiences or guest speakers requiring translators.

To a presenter this book is valuable; to an event coordinator or road-warrior presenter this book is a jewel. It covers topics and situations you rarely think of until you've been embarrassed a few times, and is clearly and cleverly written.

4 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad.......2001-08-04

The writer of this book appropriately acknowledges the fact that you cannot learn to present from a book. Like many other things it is a matter of practice makes perfect. So, if you are interested in this book because you are "scared"/unsure etc. of an upcoming presentation, this book will not teach you how to do it. However, this book will make you aware of some of the good and bad practices.

In the preface of the book the author mentions that the growth in computer projection equipment and the accompanying software that enables the creation of the so called "slide shows" may lead to the impression that everything is done by the computer. In this book he effectively shows that that is not the case.

The book commences in Chapters 2 and 3 by stressing the importance of planning your talk. Knowing what you want to say and who the audience will be. It emphasises planning the overall structure of the talk.

Chapters 4 and 5 are appropriately dedicated to the use of visual aids. It stresses the importance of getting the message to the audience. From this perspective it provides sensible useful guidelines for people whose artistic capabilities may not be well developed. Practical aspect of letter sizing and color usage is presented - mistakes in this regard, which I see made in presentations at all levels, are pointed out. These two chapters will probably shed interesting light on certain issues even for reasonably experienced presenters. The only "factor" that I could find that is not addressed in these chapters is the excessive use of animation which certain computer software "impose" on you. Therefore if a section that builds on the statement "Don't use animation unless there is a specific reason why it would aid in getting the message across..." is added, I would be happy that it is the most complete way in which this topic is addressed in one single source.

Chapter 6 specifically deals with "new" presentation technology. It mentions several issues that pertain specifically to computer-based presentations. This is the one chapter were the book could probably be bettered, especially for people wanting to read specifically about these kinds of presentations. To get value from this chapter one probably needs to read the previous chapters as well. As such the book loses a bit of its potential as "reference" material. It is, however, still very much worthwhile if you read the book as a unit.

The rest of the book deals with a variety of issues deals with aspects such as different kinds of room layouts, different kinds of presentations etc. It fails, however, to make a link between how these would change the presentation. If the latter part of the book receives attention and do a bit more than just mention these issues much value can be added. This part of the book is probably responsible for its 4-rating. If I were to evaluate Chapters 1 - 6 and 7 - 11 separately it would probably receive 5 and 3 stars respectively.

The appendices provide some evaluation forms for the different types of meetings, which could save you some experimentation.

In general the book is a good buy for people with no or little experience in making presentations - applying and thinking carefully about some of the suggestions may help you avoid mistakes by raising awareness. However, even experienced presenters could probably get value out of the book by measuring their existing way of doing against chapters 3 - 6.

        Book Description

A 192-page book, Real-Resumes for Students shows actual resumes and cover letters that helped students launch a career after graduation from college, technical or professional school, or graduate school. Real-Resumes for Students is based on the philosophy that students have particular problems when they approach resume preparation and job hunting. Students are usually seeking their first professional position and they must figure out how to present in a meaningful fashion work experience such as waitress, tutor, intern, student teacher, volunteer, residence hall counselor, and sorority president. The Table of Contents is designed to present actual resumes of real individuals with varying degrees ranging from accounting and computer programming, to sports administration and veterinary technology. The theory behind the book is that a picture is worth a thousand words, and all resumes and cover letters shown in the book have been handpicked. There are numerous resumes which illustrate how to show clinical rotations and internships on a resume, and the editor also gives insight into how to use volunteer work and achievements to maximum advantage. Real-Resumes Series editor Anne McKinney believes strongly that student resumes are the most creative (and the most difficult to write) because they must sell potential rather than experience.

All resumes in the book are one page in length, and all resumes are accompanied by a companion cover letter. The book begins with a brief section explaining the most effective job-hunting approachthe direct approach. This unique how-to book does not simply tell how to write an effective career-change resume and cover letter; it shows how in page after page of meaty examples.

Other titles in the series being released in the year 2000 are: Real-Resumes for Teachers, Real-Resumes for Career Changers, Real-Resumes for Sales, and Real Essays for College & Grad School.

5 out of 5 stars Virtually guaranteed to make your resume the best it can be!.......1998-07-10

I would recommend this book to *anyone* writing or revising a resume...if only it were in print! Ed Good is unfailingly easy to read, and he makes his points clearly and often humorously. This book covers topics from graphic layout to syntax to paper selection, all with the goal of helping the reader create a resume that will catch an employer's eye and secure the reader an interview. Personally, I found it an ego boost to look objectively at my past experiences and think about ways to "advertise" them. I ended up with a resume that immeasurably outshined the one I started with, but also with a much better sense of what specific strengths I could offer an employer. Regardless of how sure you already are that you know what you're doing, this book can surely teach you a few things about writing your resume.

              Book Description

When it comes to planning a winning corporate strategy, many business leaders fail to consider market research. This is a critical mistake. Done correctly and with creativity, market research can provide real value by serving as the radar that will alert your business to the perils and opportunities that lie ahead.

Excellent marketing insight is the edge that differentiates business winners from losers. It can help your company in its effort to make-not merely serve markets. Businesses that successfully anticipate major marketplace shifts such as e-commerce, PCs, or the demand for bottled water reap rewards of legendary proportions. Few do. Less dramatic but equally important is the opportunity to improve customer understanding and marketing, which can grow profits daily. Businesses should and can do better at this. This book will show you how.

As a result of their work with the Advertising Research Foundation, authors Robert Duboff and Jim Spaeth know that market research can and should be a backbone of any business strategy. They believe research needs to move beyond its traditional, limited role of a "numbers function" to its proper place as a vehicle for enlightening decision making.

Market Research Matters provides you with tools to better align your companys market research and business forecast efforts to the overall business strategy and operations. It polishes the traditional marketing research techniques and reveals new ones that can help any company avoid the pitfalls of focusing only on the present-and seize the opportunities that an uncertain future has to offer. A section on "Mapping the Future" includes four variables to consider when dealing with the unknown:

Youll learn step by step how the research function can best serve your businesss needs. Market research will allow you to:

Understanding the recent past and present is necessary to research the future, but it is not enough. A diagnostic is included to allow you to assess how your business is progressing in each area. Youll also see how to reasonably forecast what the Internet, the Internets offspring, and the new markets they engender will be like a few years from now.

You need insight into the dynamics of the marketplace to act in anticipation of what might happen. Market Research Matters will help you make certain your business is up to the challenge of becoming a truly future focused business.

              5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book!.......2001-12-31

This wonderfully written book goes deep in strategic marketing research, and even broader. It talks about many important things having to do with market research and tells you exactly what you can do. I recommend this book to everyone. I was interested in reading the book after I saw that Clairmont College rated it as one of the top 50 business books of the year, and rightfully so.
The first three reviews I read disturbed me and I firmly believe that the reviewers did not read the book at all. Enjoy this great book.

              2 out of 5 stars Market Research.......2001-03-14

I finally give up on finishing this book. It talk about strategic anticipation which sounded greate however it never said anything about how or what to do.

              1 out of 5 stars so bad, it's scary.......2001-01-12

              here's a quote from page 35

"Paul Simon wrote a song called "Sixty Ways to Leave Your Lover." Maybe we can put it another way: How many ways can you be wrong about consumer demand for your product?"

No one edited this book. No one thought much about writing it, either. And what's with the registered trademark symbol showing up on almost every page.

Unsophisticated, hard to read, not very useful, totally unoriginal and scary in its badness.

I know the author, so I can't sign my name, but I feel required to warn you off this...

5 out of 5 stars Diplomacy on the brinkmanship.......2003-07-15

Chuck Downes has written exellent book. The history diplomatic contacts United States with North Korea was begin in 1951. Military Armistice Comissionn in Panmunjom was to 1993 only one channel diplomatic contacts. Chuck Downs described north korean diplomatic behaviour. Tis diplomacy on the brinkmanship. This continue now by Kim Chong-il. Spreading nuclear programme after withdrawal from nonproliferation regime. Book is detailed description events in history this contact. Murders axes from Panmujom accident , Pueblo warship case, Submarine commando strikers are only leading examles this activity. This book is needed for all diplomats, scholars , journalists try understand korean issue.

                5 out of 5 stars Vindication.......2003-01-22

I read this book when it first came out. Anyone who did is unsurprised about the past several months' developments -- except by the fact that some in the free world still want to reward North Korea for doing what it is already obligated to do.

1 out of 5 stars Doctrinaire View of the North.......2002-07-27

When you consider that Mr. Downs does not speak Korean, and has never spoken directly with North Koreans, either on a friendly basis nor in an adversarial sense across the bargaining table, all you are getting here is a second-hand rehash reflecting of the stand-off at Panmunjom. A serious mirror study of U.S. negotiating tactics there would not be too complimentary. This book is more about conservative U.S. opinion of the Clinton administration than anything else. Read Scot Snyder instead.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2002-02-06

This book is suspiciously loaded with one-sided story. This book emphasizes
north Korea as unpredictble and crazy while there is no mention
about US negotiating strategy, which I suspect is part of the problem.
I give a low mark just because there is not much opposing views or alternate
objective presentation. Judging from the authors, I can't but suspect
that book is not well balanced.

4 out of 5 stars If you know something about Korea it would be interesting.......2001-03-11

I would like to have either more on the actual negotiating or more on the history but the book seems to jump back and forwards between the two leaving me the reader a bit confused. So someone like myself who knows little about US and North Korea relations got little from this book.

Disappointingly it does not include that much about how other goverments (in particular South Korea) reacted and played in these talks.

However if you want to know about how the North Korean goverment have behaved with the US this is a very good book. I was stunned to read the sort of documents the US has had to sign in dealing with the North Koreans.

It shows the limitation that the US faces even in a region that it is the major power.
